Welcome back, listeners, to the introverted obelisk. I'm your host, Obi Knox, and it's a new month, but it's also still hot outside. It is terrible. Oh my gosh. And it's not just hot, it is loud. Like, I went to check the mailbox and the air just sounded alive with insects. And I gotta tell you, it's not that much better back in the oblisk rod now. Because you see, the puddles finally dried up, which was a phenomenal relief. But unfortunately, they've now been replaced by some kind of clicking sound in the walls. And I gotta be honest, I'm trying to not think about what kind of life cycle that that suggests. So, this month's theme is going to be the swarming. And as such, we're gonna keep attuned to the atomic age of film, when the solution was to one scientific problem, usually creating this doesn't read right. And as such, we're gonna keep attuned to the atomic age of film. Because the solution to one scientific problem usually involved creating three considerable larger ones. And as such, tonight, we are talking about the 1955 Universal International Creature Feature Tarantula. The movie that looked at giant monster craze of the 50s and decided, you know, dinosaurs were simply not anxiety-inducing enough anymore. And honestly, once you realize this film is basically the beast from 20,000 Fathoms, but with eight legs, and you know, significantly more nightmare fuel, the whole thing starts to make a terrifying amount of sense. Because you see, in the 50s, they absolutely loved nuclear paranoia. Every other movie from this era seemed to convince humanity was just, you know, one scientific experiment away from creating something enormous and radioactive and deeply unhappy about existing. We had giant ants, giant lizards, giant grasshoppers, giant rabbits. I mean, apparently the entire country collective decided that if science kept poking nature with atomic sticks, eventually nature was gonna stand up and start eating people in retaliation. And then comes along Tarantula, which takes all of that fear and gives it fangs, venom, and enough legs to make an entire generation afraid to check their shoes before putting them on. Which, I don't know, honestly, it feels significantly more realistic than, you know, most of the Cold War planning. So our film opens in the Arizona Desert at a remote research facility run by a professor Gerald Deemer, played by Leo G. Carroll, who's experimenting with synthetic growth hormones in the hope of solving world hunger. And I I gotta be to be fair here. Dude's intentions are genuinely noble. Like he wants to create larger livestock, larger crops, and enough food to feed a growing population. Problem is though, like most scientists in, you know, 1950s horror movies, he never pauses long enough to ask the important follow-up question, like, what happens if this goes catastrophically wrong? And the answer, as it turns out, is spider. So before long, Deemer's research partner is found wandering through the desert suffering from a horrifying disease that rapidly deforms the human body in a matter of days instead of years. Which, you know, would normally be enough for most people to shut the entire experiment down immediately. Instead, everybody continues working until the situation deteriorates into what can only be described as a very expensive biology lesson. Well, local doctor, Matt Hastings, played by John Agar, begins investigating the strange deaths alongside Deemer's newly arrived assistant Stephanie Steve Clayton, played by Mara Corday, whose job description appears to consist primarily of helping with experiments while standing near windows and being attractive enough for the camera to notice repeatedly. And honestly, this is where the movie starts settling into the formula that made these 50s creature features work so well because everybody treats the situation seriously. I mean, I love it. Like no one is like winking at the audience, you know, nobody's acting like they know they're in a movie but a giant spider. All the characters behave like rational people trying to understand something impossible. Which, again, somehow makes the impossible feel more believable if you can keep up with them. Well, then we start having cattle carcasses start appearing across the countryside, and suddenly everyone realizes this is not gonna be a normal week in Arizona. The creature itself is still remarkably effective today, because Jack Arnold wisely, and I feel very wisely for this film, avoided stop motion animation. And you all know me by now, I love me some stop motion. But in his case, he decided to go against it because, you know, let's face it, he couldn't get Harryhausen. And if you can't get Ray Harryhausen, there's no point in doing this stop motion animation. So instead, he decided to use an actual live tarantula filmed against miniature sets. You see, they used air jets to guide the spider across these little tiny roads and buildings and you know desert landscapes and creating the illusion of enormous scale without requiring really any expensive you know effects work. Very Godzilla. And honestly, you know, if you watch the film, it works. Because I think there's part of your brain that understands, you know, you're very obviously looking at a very real spider crawling across, you know, a miniature scenery, but there's another part of your brain that immediately decides that, you know, that distinction doesn't matter very much because it's still a spider, and spiders are horrifying. You know, the way they move, just and it works. It it to me it works perfectly. And I mean, let's really take in the monster for a minute. It's a giant tarantula, and it has enormous fuzzy legs, gleaming eyes, and this slow, deliberate movement that makes it feel less like a monster movie and more like an actual predator that simply became far larger than nature ever intended. And I mean it it doesn't stomp around theatrically like the dinosaur from our previous film. No, it it crawls and it does so quietly, patiently even. Like something that doesn't need to hurry because, you know, eventually everything in front of it is is just gonna die anyway. And, you know, to be fair, is an incredibly effective attitude for a giant spider to have. Well, the creature begins wandering across the desert, feeding on cattle and destroying anything unfortunate enough to wander in its path, including a small airplane whose pilot learns the valuable life lesson that light aircraft are extremely fragile when confronted by giant arachnids. A story for all of us to take to heart. In fact, the attack itself is wonderful by you know means of 50s creature feature standards because you know the pilot never really has a chance. Like the spider just simply reaches up, destroys the plane, and then continues moving like somebody just knocked a bug zapper off a porch before returning to dinner. You know? And then meanwhile, we got Dr. Hastings, who is slowly piecing things together, you know, and becomes the closest thing the movie has to a genuine hero, because, you know, while everyone else is panicking, arguing, and waiting for the military to solve things with explosives, because that's what they do in these films, Hastings is actually trying to understand the creature scientifically. See, he realizes the tarantula has been exposed to Demer's growth serum, and that the spider is continuing to grow larger, stronger, and more dangerous by the hour. And again, I feel like that's one of the reasons the movie still works. You know, because the horror isn't from you know the monster being evil. You know, it comes from unintended consequences. Because no one created the serum to make monsters. No one intended to destroy towns, and you know, nobody woke up one morning hoping to unleash a skyscraper-sized tarantula onto Arizona. You know, everybody involved was genuinely trying to help humanity. And in a way it makes everything better, but then it also in another way makes everything a whole lot worse. Well, eventually the creature reaches the town nearby, and you know, the film fully embraces its giant monster roots as the trench of the crawls through the streets, smashes buildings, terrifies civilians, and generally behaves like every town council's worst possible zoning violation. But I also feel this is also where Jack Arnold's direction really carries the film, because despite, you know, as all these films having a very low, modest budget, he still consistently frames the spider in a way that it it it still feels massive. You know, the desert landscapes help enormously because, you know, I don't know. There's something deeply unsettling about seeing this, you know, enormous living thing moving slowly across wide open spaces. You know, where there's nowhere to hide and nowhere to run. Well, we then, of course, reach the finale. The military attacks the tarantula with machine guns, vehicles, and eventually napalm. But initially nothing works because this creature is simply v way too large and too durable to stop conventionally. So Dr. Hastings eventually realizes the spider is attracted to light, and proposes using flares alert into the open ground where the military can finally trap it and just straight up burn it. Because fire or electricity seems to fix everything. And this leads to one of the probably greatest 50s creature feature climaxes, in my opinion. Because you get the spider emerging from this like darkness and it's illuminated against the desert, while fighter planes roar overhead and prepare to turn the entire area into like an absolute inferno. And decades later, I have to say it still looks great. You know, the giant spider finally collapses under the napalm assault and just burns into a smoldering heap while the town survives. And I also want to point out, no tarantulas were harmed in the making of this film. Just want to put that out there for our animal lovers. And of course, the scientists reflect on what they've done, and then humanity learns absolutely nothing from the experience. Because this is still a story about people experimenting recklessly with forces they don't fully understand. And historically speaking, that trend has not improved much. Just saying. So the film was directed by Jack Arnold, one of the defining science fiction directors of the 1950s, whose work also includes Creature from the Black Lagoon, and later The Incredible Shrinking Man. And Arnold has had one of the remarkable abilities to make relatively low-budget science fiction films feel absolutely larger, smarter, and I would even say more atmospheric than they probably had any right to be. And Tarantula is one of the best examples of his skill. And there's also this fun piece of uh production trivia attached to this movie because the same live spider used in Tarantula also appears in The Incredible Shrinking Man two Years Later. And this time playing an ordinary household spider that has become terrifying because the main character has shrunk in its insect size. So we have director and I guess technically animal actor reunited again two years later. So the film was a major success for Universal International and helped solidify the giant insect formula that absolutely dominated science fiction throughout the rest of the decade. And you can feel the DNA of tarantula all over the creature features that followed, because once Hollywood realized audiences would absolutely hand over money, like by the truckload, to watch oversized nightmare animals destroy small towns, there was no putting that radioactive genie back in the bottom. And let's face it, it's why this movie works, and so many others. And it's not because the science makes sense, because it absolutely does not. And it I'd even say it's not because giant spiders are realistic, because, you know, thankfully, they are absolutely not. I'd say it works because the movie understands one very old fear. And that fear is that humanity keeps reaching for things it probably shouldn't touch, and eventually, something might reach back. So until next time, keep your porch lights off, keep your flamethrowers nearby, and if someone invites you to an isolated desert research facility in a 1950s horror movie, maybe just stay home.
