🎙️ Episode #65 What Are You Afraid to Lose? The Real Reason You Keep Choosing the Same Life
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
What are you actually afraid to lose?
Because it’s probably not what you think.
You say you want more freedom, more peace, more truth, a life that actually feels like yours. But the moment you get close to it, you hesitate. You soften your voice in conversations where you wanted to be honest. You say “it’s fine” when it isn’t. You keep showing up for everyone else while quietly wondering why no one is showing up for you.
And then you sit there thinking, “Why do I keep doing this?”
Nothing is wrong with you.
You’re not afraid of change. You’re afraid of losing the version of you that learned how to survive.
In this episode, we go deeper into the real reason you keep choosing the same patterns and the hidden value system that’s been running your life underneath it. Because once you see it, you can change it—not by forcing yourself, but by building something new.
If this resonates while you’re listening, that’s your signal.
You’re ready for more.
Inside The Freedom Bridge Immersive, we go beyond awareness and actually rebuild your value ladder so your life starts changing from the inside out. You’ll learn how to create new sources of safety, value, and self-trust—so you’re no longer dependent on the patterns that have been keeping you stuck.
You don’t lose what you value. You expand it.
And at some point, you realize:
You are the life you’ve been looking for.
You are the love you’ve been trying to earn.
If you're ready to go deeper into this work, I’d love to walk you through it.

What are you afraid to lose? Not what are you afraid to create? Not what are you afraid to become? What are you afraid to lose? Because I promise you, your answer to that question is running way more of your life than you think. And most women I work with tell me that they want more freedom, more peace, more money, a relationship that actually feels safe, a life that feels like theirs. But then something happens. They're about to say what they really want in a conversation, and then they begin to soften it. They're about to set a fucking boundary, and instead they say, that's okay. They're about to take a fucking step forward and suddenly they're exhausted, overwhelmed, or just not feeling it anymore. And then the question becomes, what's wrong with me? Nothing, babe. Nothing is wrong with you. Your unconscious isn't trying to ruin your life. It's trying to protect something. And until you understand what that is, you'll keep choosing the same life while telling yourself you want a different one. Welcome back to Spiritually Kinky, where science meets seduction, spirit meets structure, and creation becomes your fucking love language. I'm Dustin Lee Wheeler. And as a woman who spent years trying to build a life that looks successful on the outside while quietly feeling disconnected and numb on the inside, I know what it's like to believe that if I just worked harder, achieved more, healed one more thing, then maybe I'd finally feel free. And that's why today I help high-performing women consciously create lives that they love instead of unconsciously repeating the lives that they have survived. Because, babe, you're not broken, you're structured. And once you understand your structure, everything changes. Because, babe, your unconscious doesn't care about happiness. And one of the biggest misunderstandings in personal growth is the idea that your unconscious mind is trying to sabotage you. It isn't. Your unconscious has one primary responsibility: keep you fucking alive. It isn't asking, will this make me happier? It's asking, do we already know how to survive this? Because your unconscious protects what it already knows how to survive. That changes the entire conversation. The overworking, the people-pleasing, the perfectionism, the overthinking, the need to stay in control, the fear of disappointing people. Babe, these aren't character flaws. They're survival strategies. And at some point in your life, they worked. They helped you belong. They helped you avoid rejection, heartbreak. They kept you emotionally safe. And that isn't a flaw, babe. That's a safety feature. But the problem is what once protected you may now be preventing you from living. So here's why you keep editing your dreams. Because your unconscious doesn't care about your dream life. It doesn't care about your fucking vision board. It doesn't care about your five-year plan. It cares about one thing. Do we know how to survive this? That's it. So when you say you want more freedom, but your nervous system only knows how to survive being the reliable one. Guess what it's going to choose? Reliability. Even if it's fucking killing you. When you say you want a healthier relationship, but your body knows how to survive by keeping the peace, you're going to find yourself saying things like, it's fine. It's not a big deal. I don't want to make this into something. While you're sitting there with that tight feeling in your chest, replaying the conversation later and thinking, why didn't I just say what I actually felt? And babe, that's not weakness. That's a pattern. That's your nervous system saying that, hey, we've survived this way before, stay here. And when you say you want more support, but your identity is built around being the one who has it all together, you'll find yourself doing everything alone. Not because no one would help you, but because asking feels exposed. Like if you drop the ball for even a fucking second, everything will fall apart. So you keep going. And people even praise you for it. You're so strong. You handle everything. You're amazing. And you smile while quietly thinking, God, maybe, but I'm fucking exhausted. And this is the part that people miss. Those patterns didn't come from nowhere. At some point in your life, they worked. Keeping the peace kept you safe. Being the strong one kept things from falling apart. Taking care of everyone else gave you a sense of control, a sense of purpose. Being needed made you feel like you mattered. And those weren't random habits. Those were very fucking intelligent adaptations. They helped you survive. But what once helped you survive might now be the very thing that's keeping you from living. So here's the question that you're actually answering. You think you're trying to answer what do I want? And you're not. You're answering a completely different question every time. And most of you don't even realize it. And this is the question that your nervous system is answering. What will this cost me? Not money, not time, identity. If I say what I really feel in this conversation, will I lose being the easy one? If I stop over-delivering at work, will I lose being the one that they can count on? If I stop showing up for everyone else, will I lose being needed? What if I stop trying to make this relationship work? Will I lose the version of me who doesn't give up? Here's my favorite. If I actually go after what I want, will I lose the life I've already built? And babe, that's the tension. That's the moment that everything tightens. And you don't always feel it is fear. Sometimes it feels like confusion. Sometimes it feels like procrastination. Sometimes it feels like I just don't know what I fucking want. But underneath of it all, your nervous system is asking, if we become her, who do we stop being? And here's where it gets really fucking honest. Because part of you already knows the answer. You know exactly who you would have to stop being. You would have to stop being the one who says yes when she means no. You would have to stop being the one who fixes everything for everyone. You would have to stop being the one who holds it all together, even when you're falling apart inside. You would have to stop being the one who earns love by overgiving. You would have to stop being the one who waits to be fucking chosen instead of choosing herself. And here's the part that nobody talks about. That version of you, she's not the problem. She's the one who got you here. She's the one who figured it out when you didn't have the tools. She's the one who made sure you belonged. The one who made sure you didn't get rejected. The one who made sure that you were okay. So when you start talking about changing your life, your nervous system doesn't hear expansion. It hears loss. It hears we're about to lose this version of us that kept us alive. No wonder it fucking resists. No wonder you hesitate. No wonder you feel like you're fighting yourself. You're not broken, babe. You're protecting something. You're protecting her. And here's something that I wish someone would have taught me years ago. Every single one of us has a value ladder. Not the one that we'd like to believe we have, the one we're actually living from. Because your life organizes itself around what you value the most. And the question isn't, do you have values? Of course you do. Maybe you don't. The question is, do you consciously choose them? Or did your survival choose them for you? And here's something that I wish someone would have sat me down and shown me years ago. Every single one of us has a value ladder. Not the one we say we have, the one we've actually been living from. Because your life will always organize itself around what you value most. And for a long time, I thought I valued love. I thought I valued freedom. I thought I valued peace. But when I looked at my actual life, I saw something very different. I saw that I was valuing meeting everybody else's needs before I ever stopped to ask myself what I needed. I saw that I was valuing keeping my voice small so no one else would ever feel uncomfortable around me. I saw that I was valuing being the strong one, the one who didn't cause problems, the one who fixed them, the one who held it all together. I saw that I was valuing being the one who works hard, the one who tries harder, who gives more than anybody else, who keeps showing up when something inside of her is saying, huh, this isn't it. I saw that I was valuing being the perfect daughter. Not because perfection is real, but because if I could just get it right, then maybe I wouldn't be judged. Maybe I would feel like I belonged. I saw that I was really, really, really good at giving, at anticipating what somebody needed before they even fucking asked. At checking in, at showing up, at holding space. And I was equally as uncomfortable receiving. Someone would offer to help me, and I would say, no, I got it. Not because I had it, but because letting someone else see that I didn't felt like too much. I saw that I was constantly looking outside of myself for validation, posting something and checking my phone five minutes later, just to see if anybody saw me, doing something well and immediately wondering, did anyone notice? Having a thought or a feeling and trusting somebody else's opinion about it more than my fucking own. And here's the really interesting part. Because those things feel really good. Let's be honest. It feels really good when somebody says, I don't know what I'd do without you. It feels really good to be the one that everybody depends on. It feels good to rescue someone. It feels good to be the strong one. It feels good when people tell you that, oh, you're so amazing. It feels really good to be seen. It feels really good to be chosen. And it feels really good to be the one holding everything together. And I'm not gonna pretend it doesn't. It does. That validation feels incredible in the moment. And there's a moment where your whole body exhales. Like, okay, I matter. That's real. But here's what I started to notice is it didn't last. That feeling would hit, but then it fades. And when it faded, I would find myself reaching for the next moment to feel it again. The next person to help, the next situation to fix, the next place I could prove myself. The next moment somebody would reflect back to me that I was enough. Not because I was broken, not because external validation is bad. Because I was sourcing my value from something outside of me. And babe, here's the thing: when that's your only source, it expires pretty damn quickly. And when your worth depends on someone else handing it back to you, it will never feel like enough. And anything outside of you, no matter how beautiful it is, will never be consistent enough to hold your worth. So you keep going back for more, more validation, more reassurance, more proof, more people to save, more people to give to you, more sacrifice to be made. And for a moment it works, but it never lasts. And this is the lie that your unconscious is protecting. This is the part that most people never actually look at because it's uncomfortable. Not scary per se, maybe, but uncomfortable because it forces you to tell the truth about something that you've been quietly holding on to. It's afraid of fucking loss. But not the kind of loss you think. It's not sitting there worried about the job or your house or your relationship. No, it's asking something way more specific. If we let this go, will we ever get this feeling again? If I stop being needed, will I ever feel important again? If I stop being the one who holds everything together, will I ever feel valuable again? If I stop overgiving, will I ever feel loved again? If I stop keeping the peace, will I still belong? And here's the problem, babe. Your nervous system doesn't understand upgrade. It doesn't understand promotion, it understands have or don't have. So when you start talking about changing your life, it doesn't hear, oh, we're gonna experience deeper love. It hears, holy shit, we're about to lose the only version of love that we've ever known. And that's the lie. And fuck, it's a convincing one. Because you have proof. You felt what it's like to be needed, you felt what it's like to be chosen, you felt what it's like to be validated. So your body goes, why would we risk losing that? Even if it costs you everything else, even if you're exhausted, even if you're disconnected, even if you've been quietly thinking, I don't want to live like this for the next 20 years, your nervous system will still choose it. Because to your body, something is better than nothing. But here's where I'm gonna challenge you. You're not afraid of losing the feeling, babe. You're afraid of not knowing how to access it another way. And that's different. Because right now, you only know how to feel important when somebody needs you. You only know how to feel loved when you're overgiving. You only know how to feel safe when you're in control. You only know how to feel valuable when somebody else reflects it back to you. So of course you hold on to it. Of course you don't want to let it go. Of course you keep choosing it. And babe, that's not weakness, that's just limited access. And limited access feels like permanent loss, but it's not. And you're not being asked to lose the experience like your unconscious is trying to tell you. You're being asked to stop sourcing it in the same way. And those, babe, are not the same thing. And this is why I teach people how to consciously create a new value ladder. Not because your old values were wrong, they served you, they got you here, but they were built for survival, babe. And now it's time to build values designed for living. Instead of value being needed, what if you valued empowering others? Instead of valuing outside validation, what if you valued self-trust? Instead of valuing perfection, what if you valued authenticity? Instead of valuing keeping everyone comfortable, what if you valued speaking your truth with love? And here's the beautiful part: you don't lose the experiences you once valued. You get to enhance them. You still experience love, but now it isn't dependent on abandoning yourself. You still receive appreciation, but appreciation becomes something you enjoy instead of something that you need in order to remember who you are. You still belong, but now you belong as yourself, the true version of you, not as the version of you who everyone else needed you to become. We don't stop experiencing what we value, we stop outsourcing where we experience it. And babe, you don't lose it, you expand it. And let me be really clear about something. You don't actually want to stop being valued, you don't want to stop feeling important, you don't want to stop being loved, and you don't want to stop being seen. So let's stop pretending that that's the goal. That's not what we're doing here. You're not being asked to become someone who doesn't care. You're being asked to become someone who doesn't need it in order to exist. That's a completely different level of power, babe. Because right now, you've learned how to access certain feelings in very specific ways. You feel important when somebody depends on you. You feel loved when you've given so much of yourself that someone finally says thank you. You feel safe when everything is under control and nothing is unpredictable. You feel valuable when someone else reflects it back to you. And that's your current access point. That's your pattern. And again, it makes sense. But here's the part that changes everything. Those feelings don't belong to those patterns, babe. You just learned how to access them there. That's it. So when you start shifting your life, you're not losing the feeling. You're just losing the way that you've known how to get to it. That's why it feels like everything. That's why your body tightens. That's why you hesitate right before you do something different. Because in that moment, babe, you don't yet trust that there's another way. But let me make this real fucking loud and clear. Instead of being needed, what if you experienced being respected? Instead of someone saying, I don't know what I'd do without you, what if they said, I trust you, but I've got this? And babe, that hits different. It's quieter, it's cleaner. There's no pressure in it, no responsibility tied to your fucking worth. Instead of being loved because you overgave, what if you loved because you told the truth, even when your voice shook? Even when it would have been easier just to keep the peace. Because that kind of love, babe, doesn't spike and crash. It lands. Instead of feeling safe because you're controlling everything, what if you felt safe because you trust yourself? Not the situation, not the outcome, your fucking self. That you'll handle whatever comes. And babe, that's a different kind of safety. And that's not fragile. Instead of checking your phone to see who's validated you, what if you could feel solid in what you just said or created before anyone responded? Not because you don't care, but because you already know. Do you see what's happening? Babe, you're not becoming less, you're becoming less dependent on conditions. And that fucking changes the name of the game. Because now when someone appreciates you, you get to actually enjoy it, not cling to it, not need more of it. Enjoy it. And this is the part that nobody really explains. Because when you stop outsourcing your value, you don't experience less of life. You experience more of it, more life satisfaction, less pain, more grounded, more consistent, more real. Because it's not constantly being taken away from you the moment the external moment passes. You don't lose love, babe, you deepen it. You don't lose belonging, you make it real. You don't lose validation, you stop chasing it. And that's when this line actually lands. Not as a quote, but as something that you can feel in your body. Babe, you are the life that you've been looking for. You are the love that you've been trying to earn. So if you've been listening to this and thinking, okay, I see it. I see the pattern. I see what I've been valuing. And I see why I keep choosing the same things. Good. That's awareness. And that's the first step. But awareness alone doesn't change your life because you can see the pattern and still choose it tomorrow. Why? Because your nervous system still believes it's the only way to access what you need. So this isn't about just noticing it. This is about retraining it. This is about taking action in a new direction. And this is exactly what we're doing inside the Freedom Bridge immersive. We're not just talking about the patterns, we're identifying the value ladder that's actually been running your life. The one that's been quietly deciding for you what you say yes to, what you tolerate, what you go after, and what you take yourself out of before you even start. And then we fucking rebuild it. Not by forcing yourself to think differently, babe. Not pretending that fear isn't there, but by showing your nervous system something it hasn't experienced yet. That your new values create more life than the old ones ever fucking could. More freedom, more peace, more truth, more real connection. Because once your body realizes, oh, I don't lose love. I don't lose belonging. I don't lose value or safety. I just experience them differently. Dave, that's when the resistance starts to soften. Not because you pushed through it, but because it no longer needs to protect you in the same way. So if today's episode spoke to you, please share it with somebody who needs to hear it. And if you're ready to go deeper, I would love to welcome you into the Freedom Bridge Immersive because it isn't about just understanding why you feel stuck. It's actually about changing the structure that's been creating your life. And before we part ways, babe, I want to remind you of something. You are not broken. You are the creative force within, and you get to choose what you would love to create. So whether you're here to be a little bit spiritual, or you're here to be a little bit kinky, or you're here like me to be a whole lot of both, because creation is one of the fucking kinkiest things that you will ever do. Lead with love, my friends. And in case nobody told you today, I see you, I feel you, and I love you, and you are not alone.
