LinkedIn Leverage: Unlocking New Clients & Candidates for NED Capital
“Hello and welcome to the Ned Capital Podcast" — I’m Adrian Lawrence. Today we’re diving into a tool many of us use every day but perhaps don’t always maximise: LinkedIn. Specifically, how Ned Capital can use LinkedIn not just for passive visibility, but as an active engine for attracting both clients (companies seeking non-executive directors, chairs, fractional executives) and candidates (experienced executives, board members) who want NED roles, portfolio roles, fractional C-suite roles and so on.
Why is this topic important? Because in our world of non-executive and fractional leadership recruitment, relationships, trust and visibility matter deeply. And LinkedIn is uniquely positioned to help build those, often more efficiently than many traditional channels. Over the next ~20 minutes, we’ll cover what works, what to watch out for, practical tactics, and case examples (real or hypothetical) to illustrate.
So, let’s begin.”
Part 1: Why LinkedIn Is So Valuable for Ned Capital
- Professional audience & relevance
LinkedIn is where executives, board members, Chairs, CFOs, etc. are already present. Many potential candidates are already there; many potential client organisations are there too (companies posting jobs, thinking board appointments, or reading thought-leadership). - Signals & credibility
Profiles, recommendations, content, connections — everything on LinkedIn conveys credibility. For example, when a company is looking for a new non-exec, they may research what your team has written, your past placements, your network. Your LinkedIn presence can build trust before you even speak. - Searchability & targeting
LinkedIn lets you filter by experience, geography, sector, board experience, functional background. Thus, it’s possible to identify people who look like promising candidates (or clients) even if they are not actively looking, and reach out in a more targeted way. Also, for clients, you might see announcements (“we’re raising capital”, “seeking board oversight”, “preparing for IPO”) which are signals that they'd be in the market. - Cost-efficiency vs more expensive channels
Compared to some forms of advertising, travel, or traditional networking events, LinkedIn outreach and content promotion can be relatively low-cost but high-reward, especially if you build organic reach. - Thought leadership & brand building
Publishing articles, posts, commentary helps position Ned Capital as experts in the NED / governance / board recruitment space. This makes inbound leads more likely (both from candidates and clients).
Part 2: Key Challenges & Caveats (2-3 mins)
- Noise & competition
Many firms and individuals are using LinkedIn. Standing out requires good content, consistency, and often a unique voice or positioning. - Time investment
Building relationships, maintaining a content calendar, responding to messages, nurturing weaker leads — this all takes time and process discipline. - Privacy / confidentiality constraints
Especially with board / NED roles, many searches are confidential or “off-market.” You may not be able to post or advertise openly; outreach needs to be discreet and carefully managed. - Authenticity & tone
If outreach feels too “salesy” or generic, it can damage reputation. It’s not just what you say, but how you say it.
