Remember when Jesus told his "Number One Disciple," Simon Peter, "Get behind me, Satan!" What was that all about? How would Simon have reacted and what can we as modern Christians learn to make sure Jesus doesn't say the same thing to us? In this episode Laurie explores just how deeply aware Jesus was of God's plan for him while he was engaged in his earthly ministry. And how difficult it must've been for this Son of God to get us humans to understand and get onboard.
Laurie welcomes the delightful and insightful Janet Dickinson as her guest. Janet is a retired South Carolina English teacher with a voice as sweet as honey and a faith as strong as iron. Settle in for a great discussion about Simon Peter, Jesus and all the rest!
Hi, I'm your host Lori Larson, and this is the year I read the Bible. Welcome a Lifelong Christian. I thought I was familiar with the Bible, but in 2023 I accepted the challenge of reading the whole thing, cover to cover. Whenever I encountered something I didn't understand or wanted to learn more. I jotted it down, but I kept reading to stay on schedule. Then I reached the end Imagine Confetti rating down on me, and a huge sigh of relief. I had 40 topics to research in 2024. I started diving into all those topics. I did research, I wrote blogs and I shared them with whoever might wanna learn too. And in 2025, the project continues. I published a book containing all my essays, and now a podcast. Is there something you can learn from that dusty book that sits on all of our shelves? Yes. Yes, there is. Let's dive into The year I read the Bible. Hello friends, how are you? This is Lori and I'm here with a new episode of the year. I read the Bible. This is episode 33 out of 40, so wow. We are getting close to wrapping this project up. I hope you've enjoyed listening as much as I have enjoyed creating these for you. This episode is called Jesus Knew All Along. Here's what we have to say, because Jesus was born like every other child into a human family and grew up influenced by his parents, his schoolmates, and other people in his life. It's easy to forget for a moment that he wasn't like any other child. Yes, he was fully human, but he was also fully divine. The son of God, the moment of his birth. As he grew up and completed his young adult years, he was in close communication with his Heavenly Father. There are so many scripture references in which he told people who he was. Remember when as a young boy, Jesus was lost for days during the annual trip to Jerusalem for Passover, and finally they found him in the temple. His parents were frantically looking for him, and he just said, why wouldn't you think I was in my father's house? Luke 2 41. Remember when Jesus returned to his hometown Nazareth and he read the scroll of the prophet Isaiah in his local synagogue? Verse 29 of Luke chapter four says, then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. He said, today, this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing. This gives me the shutters. He knew why he was there on earth and he and God were in sync about how his work would be accomplished. Remember all those times, Jesus left the clamor and hubbub of his daily ministry to walk away and pray. He was reconnecting with God to make sure he knew the plan. But despite Jesus's certainty of the end goal of his ministry, crucifixion and resurrection, his disciples and followers had a difficult time understanding it. Jesus often spoke in parables and left the symbolic stories up to their interpretation, or even when he told them directly, I'm going to be crucified and I will rise again on the third day. They didn't want to accept it. They were in the throes of daily activity and they couldn't lift their heads up to see the big picture. Matthew 16 verses 21 through 23 reads. From that time on, Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, never Lord. He said, this shall never happen to you. Jesus turned and said to Peter, get behind me. Satan, you are a stumbling block to me. You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns. Wow. Take a moment and put yourself in Peter's shoes. I'm sure he was devastated by this harsh rebuke. Peter and Jesus had a history and they were very close. Simon Peter was one of the first men. Jesus selected to follow him, and Simon dropped everything in his life to do what Jesus asked him. Jesus had just said this to Simon in verse 17 of that same chapter. Blessed are you Simon, son of Jonah. For I tell you that you are Peter and on this rock. I will build my church. I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. So Peter could be thought of as the number one disciple, the one of all of them. Jesus chose to be the rock to build his church upon. Why then did he command get behind me, Satan, to Peter, one of his most devout followers. It seems harsh and out of character for Jesus. It could be that the plan Jesus had revealed to them was starkly different than what they thought they had been doing with him all along. Contrary to their expectations of him, Jesus explained that he had not come to establish an earthly messianic kingdom. At that time, the disciples were not prepared for this new revelation of the Messiah's purpose. Though Peter understood his words, he simply could not reconcile his and certainly all Jews long-held view of the conquering Messiah with the suffering and death Jesus spoke of. So Jesus quote began to rebuke him from verse 22 for having such a fatalistic mindset. It could also be that Peter had grown to love Jesus so much and had always considered himself a protector of the Messiah, that if this crazy plan were to come true, it would mean that he, Peter had failed to protect Jesus, and he personally couldn't bear to witness the death and destruction of Jesus after how close they'd become. Think of someone you love very deeply, maybe a son or a daughter, or even a parent. If that person tells you something horrific that's going to happen to them, your first impulse would be to deny it. No, sweetheart, you're not going to fail outta school. You're going to be fine. Even though their GPA had slipped below the acceptable mark. Mom, no, you don't need to have that surgery. That will require weeks or months of recovery. You're going to be fine even though the test results showed surgery was the last possible option. It's denial, right? By insisting that this person you love more than anything doesn't need to go through a painful experience, maybe you can make it. So maybe that's why Peter said what he did. Either ignorance of the plan or denying the pain and suffering his Lord would have to go through. He wasn't on board. Jesus's extreme response to Peter's denial, made it absolutely clear that Peter was wrong and that he'd better get on board quickly. Jesus didn't put a soft, loving arm on his shoulder and thank him for his concern and say thank you for trying to save me from this, but it's not gonna work buddy. No, he shouted at Peter and called him the worst name that ever existed, Satan. And not only was Peter just not on board, he was acting as a stumbling block to Jesus following the will of his Father. If Peter didn't understand and accept what Jesus was doing, Jesus would be better off without him. Did Peter want to stay in oblivious denial, or did he want to join Jesus and support him in the unimaginable plan? Jesus had been walking toward all along. Peter was not setting his mind on the things of God, his ways, his plans, and his purposes. Instead, his mind was set on the things of man. The things of the world and its earthly values. Jesus was saying that the way of the cross was God's will, the plan of redemption for all mankind. Of course we'll be seeing more of Peter and the choices he makes after Jesus has been arrested, but that will be for another day. I think what we can learn from Peter holding strong to not believing Jesus' declaration of the will of God is this, at the time, Jesus's stern reprimand did not make sense to Peter. However, Jesus's indictment. Presents a profound message for us. We can easily see that Peter had the wrong perspective of God's plan for Christ's suffering and death, but we must also see how easily we can become an unwitting spokesperson for Satan. This is especially true when we lose sight of God's plan for us. This comes about when our focus is on our careers, our possessions, our security, and the things of the world, rather than upon sacrifice and service and the proclaiming of God's message. When Peter's focus shifted to his own desires and plans, Jesus rebuked him to get back on track. May our focus always be on God. And his plans that we may never experience a similar rebuke from our Lord. My thanks to the website got questions. Why did Jesus say to Peter, get behind me, Satan, for insights on this topic? Shall we pray? God, sometimes we have to face unwelcome news in our lives as Christians. Sometimes we think that. Our way of handling a situation is preferable to your way. Help us to always keep our focus on you and draw you into our lives so we may understand what you would have us do. Help us never to be that unwitting, spokesperson for Satan, our enemy. Amen. And now please stay tuned. I have a new guest to the podcast and I know you are gonna love her as much as I do. And welcome back. I am here today with my guest, Janet Dickinson, and I know that once we start our conversation, you are gonna love Janet as much as I do. First of all, she's got a beautiful South Carolina accent, which is so much more beautiful than my Illinois accent. But she is just a, faithful lover of Jesus, and I would like to introduce you now. Welcome, Janet. Well, thank you, Lori. That's a beautiful introduction. Why don't you start by telling us a little about yourself and also how you and I became acquainted with each other. Okay. As you can tell, I am a native South Carolinian. This is my first year of retirement. I have taught school for. Over 35 years I was an English teacher and I know Lori through our women's Bible study at the church that we attend. And Lori has got the most pleasant. Demeanor and such a kind face. And when I found out that she was a published author, ooh, my ears perked up and I thought, Ooh, I need to know more. And then I found out that she had a podcast and that just intrigued me more. And when she in. Invited me to be a guest. I was just delighted. But Lori is just a kind person and I feel like we've become friends and I'm thankful for that. Absolutely. Absolutely. So you said you taught English. Were you high school? Junior high. What was your age level of kids? I began my career as a high school English teacher, and then after I had children, I became a middle school teacher because grading. Essays that counted towards your final GPA became a little too stressful for me. So, I spent over 20 years as a middle school teacher, which I really loved. Sixth, seventh and eighth, and my last 10 years were seventh and eighth. And you have to really love middle schoolers to stick it out. And I did. I loved them and I missed them. Yeah, I was an English major in college and. A lot of people would say, oh, do you wanna teach? And I'm like, I don't think I wanna teach. But I did, of course, consider it. And I thought if I ever taught English, I think I would like the junior high, middle grades. I don't know why I think junior high is the perfect age, although I have heard that junior high teaching is challenging. Oh, it's challenging. And I did enjoy high school. But by the time kids have reached 11th and 12th grade, which is what I taught, their opinions and their beliefs have really begun to develop, and they are not afraid to really speak up. And I prefer kids that are a little more. Moldable, like, yes, middle school kids. Yes. That's a really good way of putting it. In the public high schools these days, there's just so many things that you need to deal with from the lifestyles and the society that. Are so different than just teaching. so adverse, from teaching such as, addiction and, alcohol and drugs. Kids are coming in with these problems. Mm-hmm. Not that, I guess that couldn't happen in junior high, but, well, and surprisingly it does. You spend more of your time being a counselor than you. Do a teacher, but I enjoyed every minute of it. Yeah. And society has changed so much in the. 35 years since I began my career, it was time for me to go home. Yes. And you never taught any of my kids, but being a parent, I thank you for you, dedicating your career to improving our children's learning and just how they live their lives so well, I appreciate that. Well, should we talk a little bit about this essay? Jesus knew all along. What do you make of this concept that Jesus as a child or as a young man was fully human and fully divine? Obviously, we aren't overly familiar with this concept because it's only ever happened with Jesus. What challenges do you think the people close to Jesus had dealing with this reality? I've thought about what must Mary have felt? She was 13 years old. God came to her and said, I've chosen you among women to be the mother of the Messiah. Mm. So she carries this baby knowing this is divine intervention. And you know the song Merry Did you Know? Yes. I, every Christmas when I hear that, I think about it, but I don't know that Mary and Joseph really as humans, could grasp what that really meant. Yeah. And as human beings, our frame of reference is so limited, nothing like that's ever happened to us. I can't even imagine what that must have been like. But we know so little about Jesus as a little child. Mm-hmm. But we do know about when, they went to Passover and he. Was with the group. And when they found him, he said, you know, I'm in about my father's business. He was, listening, sitting at the feet of the rabbis listening. Yeah. And what I think is, what must the brothers and sisters of Jesus have thought? Did they know this is God and this is human? I mean, how much did they know? I can't imagine that that would be a concept that they could understand as children. Children. I think it was hard enough for Mary to understand, well, can you imagine, as a human mother to know that I've given birth to a child? That's God and I, I don't know how you treat that child. Like a regular child, but Right. Obviously she did a great job with it. Yeah. I mean, when you think about the angel visited Mary and the Angel listeners, I apologize for the dog barking in the background. An angel visited Joseph in his sleep and just explained what was going on. And then obviously between the, virgin birth and the star and the message to leave and go to Egypt, to, these were all signs that they knew what was going on and that they understood, but yeah. You brought up a very interesting point. I've never thought of What about. All the fully human children that, Mary and Joseph had. Yeah. And I'm assuming, and this is just coming from me, that they treated him as an equal. Mm-hmm. Well they did encourage him and lead him into the family business of carpentry. Mm-hmm. Ry Uhhuh, I think Joseph was a carpenter, and Jesus became a carpenter. And Lori, I don't think that the people in the community knew. I think that somehow Mary and Joseph knew not to tell the community, oh, this is the son of God. Yes. Somehow I guess they knew his time would come to reveal who he was, but mm-hmm. We know so little about the life of Jesus until his. He's 30 years old in his time of ministry. Well, do you remember when he came back to Nazareth? And he had been on his ministry, he had been away for a while. He came back and he was asked to read, from the scrolls at a service, Uhhuh, and he read the Old Testament, of course, what we know is the Old Testament. And he said it down and he said, this prophecy has now been fulfilled in your hearing. Well, everyone was shocked and angry that he would say that. So obviously they didn't know. They did not know while he was around. I am so glad that I live Now, had I lived then I would've thought. You know, who does he think he is? Exactly. And I would've been on the side of crucified this man. So I'm thankful to God that I have been born when I have. Yes. Yes. I had an episode in this podcast that covers that very same concept that would, I have believed if I were walking around Galilee and this minister. Talking about something completely different than how I'd been raised. Would I have believed or would I have been doubtful? Well, and then, you know, the Jewish people were looking for a Messiah, but they expected a Messiah that would come as an earthly king and, overrule the, Roman Empire takeover. Yes. And that is not what Jesus presented himself as. No. No. He was a suffering messiah, filled with kindness, and he wanted to, forgive sins from the people by taking on the sin of the world. And can't you imagine when he began to tell what his ministry was all about? That would be so hard to understand. If I have come to give my life. To redeem humanity. Right. So that you'll be in right standing with God that, yeah, our entire life we've been taught that, two plus two equals four. Mm-hmm. And how about this guy that comes around and says, no, actually two plus two equals five here, let me explain how, and it took'em three years, to explain how two plus two equals five and. That's why it's so hard for people to buy it. Well, imagine being at the wedding where he turns the water into wine. Yeah. As just a normal person, I would think this is a trick. Yes. Oh, this is just a trick. There must have been something behind the scenes. Yeah. They're just kidding us. They're kidding. But then imagine being. At the place where he takes the bread and the fish. Yes. And he feeds the multitudes. If you were there, you would have to hmm. Wonder what's going on here. And I think his crowds were getting bigger and bigger because word was spreading and you know, I wanna see this for myself. Yes. I've heard about this guy Uhhuh. Now he's, you know, it's almost like a celebrity site. Yes. I wanna see it, so I'm gonna go and I'm gonna see what's happening. Yeah. Um, yes, but I'd go back to this. I'm so glad I was born. Oh, I'm so glad I was born with the entire Old Testament and the New Testament and the New Testament. Yes. Centuries of preachers and teachers and sermons and and people that had, have really studied the scriptures and have written and given us their knowledge and. Some meat to chew on, to go along with the word of God. That's right. If we can't get it now, we're in trouble. Right. Well, at my age, if I hadn't gotten it by now, it's not coming. So in the essay I talk about Jesus repeatedly telling his disciples. Both in parables that they would have to interpret and then in indisputable direct language that he was going to be tortured, crucified, and resurrected, and the people closest to him disputed it, not wanting to believe it. How do you think you would react if you were in his 12 or if you were close by when he kept trying to prepare you for this knowledge? Well, I'm gonna go back to this as a human being, our frame of reference is limited to humanity. And just like the disciples were. It would be very difficult to realize this person, and they had grown to love Jesus and realized, you know, the amount of transfiguration when Jesus was glorified and was it Elijah or Elisha? And Moses were there and these disciples saw. Jesus in his glorified state, they knew this is the son of God, so they knew he was who he said he was, but they could not grasp that this person has to suffer, this person we've come to love and want to spend time with. How could this be that he's got to give his life? I think that would be hard. It's hard, so hard to understand. It's so very hard to understand. Yeah, that would be difficult. And you know that this is the son of God. You know what he's telling you is true, but you cannot understand that. And even Simon Peter said, no, this isn't gonna happen. This can't happen to you. And Jesus rebuked him and said, get behind harshly me Satan harshly. Yeah, Simon Peter is my favorite disciple because if you think about him, he was one of the first disciples that Jesus recruited. Mm-hmm. And he came willingly and he gave up everything. He gave up his fishing business and he left his wife, he had a wife at home and they would hold their disciple meetings in his house and she would serve them and he tried. To probably go beyond his skill and education level. Mm-hmm. To be the leader of the disciples. I said in the essay, he was kind of the number one disciple. Mm-hmm. Because Jesus recognized his abilities and told him, you are the rock that I'm going to build my church on. But that did not mean that he was the perfect disciple. Well, I think that he is every man, every woman, we all. Are Simon Peters. Yeah. We all had that tendency. Maybe not all of us. I know I do. That tendency to want to, just jump ahead and just be it. Just do. Yeah. And what Jesus wanted was faith. Yeah. The faith. And I think his heart, Simon Peters' heart was so pure and so kind, but he did not want the brotherhood that he had with the disciples. And with. The Messiah to end. Yeah. And it was just, just too hard to understand when Jesus told him, as you mentioned, get behind me, Satan, it must have just crushed Simon, because he was Jesus's number one fan. I kind of liken it in the essay to, as if, like my mother. I'm so close to her and I love her. If she ever tells me something that she has to go through that's terrible and painful my first tendency is to deny it. Oh, no, no, it's gonna be fine. Don't worry. Don't, no, you won't have to do that. And that's basically, I mean, it's a good hearted thing, but obviously, Jesus can't have his. Leader of disciples going around and saying that that's not God's will. What do you think that says about Jesus' and Simon Peter's relationship? Jesus is and Wise's love, and he loved Simon Peter so much, and I believe that Simon Peter loved him. As much as a human could. But he still was walking in his humanity and that was just almost too hard to believe. Yeah. I love when Jesus told him, you know, before the cock crows three times. Three times. Yeah. You will deny me. Well, you know, as much as he loved the Lord. He just couldn't believe that would happen. No. And then it did three times and then he realized this is what I have done. But I think that makes us as followers of Jesus love him even more, because though we may not say, oh, I don't know Jesus. There are things in our lives where we deny him or I know, I, I do not, where I say, oh, I don't believe he's the Messiah. Yeah. But when we don't love the unlovable, we've denied Jesus. Yeah. When we don't help someone who is. Starving who is cold. We have denied Jesus. Yeah. Of course we honor Jesus. He is the risen savior, but I think Simon Peter is a great example for us to look up to. Yeah. This is repeated throughout the entire Bible, not just the Jesus story, but throughout the entire Bible is that we're humans and that automatically means that we're not perfect. But God knows that he created us. Mm-hmm. And he loves us still. And it doesn't mean. That we can't have a place in his kingdom and that we can't work for him or spread the word or do good deeds for him, for his people, just because we don't do it a hundred percent perfectly all the time. Exactly. And Jesus having come as all man, he was all God, but he was all man. Though he was tempted like we are, he never sinned, but he understands what we as human beings. Experience. Yeah. And the great thing about him giving his life and the shedding of his blood, it covers our sins. And if the word of God tells us if we're faithful and just. To confess our sins. He's faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and that doesn't give us an excuse to sin or a right to sin, but man, does it help when we fall short? Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. That's what keeps us going because if we did not have. Knowledge that we can confess our sins and get back in right standing with Jesus. We'd all give up. Yeah. There would be no point in trying and we'll never measure up to what we should be, but we have. An advocate with the father. We have Jesus Christ, who is, standing in that gap. He's like that attorney before the judge saying, your honor, my client is guiltless. Yes. And that's how I have to think of it. And it's all based in love. It is. He knew every hair on our head before we were even born. He knit us into our mother's womb and he's followed us every step of the way. And he's so faithful, and I've gotta interject with this. I salt for 20 years, I looked for a church that I could just feel like. This is my church. Mm-hmm. And when I came to our church Yeah. The first Sunday I was like, this is it. And I prayed that I would get to know people and have friends that were not my school friends. Yes. That it was something that. A friendship based on mutual love of the word of God and that desire to be better. And that's what I love about our small group. We're all just humans. We're fallible and we don't mind saying, you know, I miss the mark. Yeah. But we all have that common. Desire to be what God created us to be. Yes, and it just makes me happy when I think about our group and I am completely with you. In fact, faithful listeners of this podcast have heard about All Saints Church, small Group six in Women of the Word, because I've mentioned it so many times. Many times. I really think that it was. W the regular Bible study.'cause if you look at it like a, school year, we have a fall semester, we have a spring semester, and we have a summer session that are different topics. It was a couple years into that, schedule that I really developed the thirst, to kick off the year I read the Bible. Mm-hmm. Because it was year 2023 that I read the Bible. 24 that I did all the research and learning and now 25 has been about sharing the word through my book and the podcast. And it was all planted with seeds through women and the word. And I'm so thankful that friends invited my husband and I to come to All Saints and I think it was during the summer session that something about the topic. And I haven't missed a semester since then. Well, I began the women in the word long before I joined the church. And because I was working, I went to the six o'clock on Monday night. Mm-hmm. And. It was just so rich. I were so blessed to have the women that teach those lessons. They're so knowledgeable and it's obvious that they've spent so much time learning. And then, after I retired to get into the day group and really know that, okay, I don't work anymore. I can really be a part of this. Yes. Has been just a blessing from God. Yes. I totally agree. I'm exactly in the right place at the right church home, the right bible study home, and it reaps the, reward every single week. This is what excites me, Lori, when I lie in bed at night after I've prayed, I just meditate on things and I think eons. Ago God knew that we would be here and he had all this planned, there are no accidents with God. You know? And when that came to me, it made me really, really excited. And not long after that is when we had our, little luncheon. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. And you asked me if I would like to be on the podcast and I just thought, this is God's hand. Yes. And I'm so thankful for that. But God loves us so much and gives us so much. My prayer for 2026 is that I will really hunger for the word of God. And I've done those, year Bible studies. Mm-hmm. And. I'll do real well and then get kinda sidetracked and then pick back up. Yes, yes. But my prayer is that I would just be so hungry for the word of God that I've got to eat that every day. Yeah. Yes. And and this podcast, this whole. Manifestation of sharing. What I learned is nearing an end, and although I will really miss it, because it got me so deeply into the word and I've enjoyed every minute of doing it, in a way, I'm glad because it's gonna free up my time to now dive into another, Bible study where I can get, more deeply in yeah, I'm just really, really happy that God sent me down this path. Every day is an exciting day to see what's God got in store for us today. And, and I wanna say this to listeners, sometimes people think that, oh, well that's a Christian and they're just happy and everything's wonderful and I don't know about Lori's all of your life and what goes on behind the scenes. Sure. But there are things that just. In the natural as a human being that I can give up. But there's hope in Jesus Christ and hanging on to that truth that he loves us and he hears our prayers, enables me to just keep going because in life there's some things that we could just. I could ball up in the bed and not get out, you know? Absolutely. But there is hope in Jesus and he loves us. And as a parent, and I know you'll agree with this, we want what's best for our children. And God who is our ultimate father, wants what's best for us. Mm-hmm. If we'll get in sync with his plan for our lives. Yeah. Everything's gonna work out. Does it mean it's gonna be perfect? No, but it's gonna work out. Yeah. And we know that because of the Bible it's the same God that watched over David, that, watched over Noah, that watched over all those characters. It's the same God that's now, manifesting himself in our lives and we know. Exactly what he's capable of because we've read about it and we've prayed about it because he tells us in his word, I, I don't change. I'm the same yesterday, today and forever. And listen, this is the God that got Jonah out of the belly of the Well, so if, if he can do that, and, saved Noah told him to build an arc or Daniel in the lion's den. Yeah. You know this God can do anything. Yeah. He can do anything and we know that and we're just, I'm just waiting to see what's He's gonna That's right. Do next. Yes. Well, I am so grateful that God has put the two of us on the same path. Mm-hmm. It's been so fun getting to know you. And I thank you so much for coming and sharing with us your thoughts and your knowledge and, it's been wonderful. Do you have anything else you wanna say before we wrap it up? Well, I'm just so thankful that you gave me this opportunity and I love your podcast all. Anytime I'm driving on a trip, my cousin and I take trips together and we, okay, we gotta get Lori's podcast up and going. That's why I invited you to be a, guest because I was like, wait, wait. You listen. Oh, okay. Well, you'll have to come on. Oh, yes. I'm a faithful listener. Oh, that's great to hear. I do. Thank you for having me. All right, well we are gonna wrap it up, but.
