The thought behind the theme nights: Creating Connection in our Dance Community
Community and dance take centre stage in this episode, as Liz and Mark take you behind the scenes of Ceroc Inspire’s themed class nights and holiday events. From Halloween and Christmas to next year’s exciting freestyle plans, they share how theme ideas come together, what makes them work, and why some resonate more than others.
You’ll hear why Derby no longer holds a Halloween class night, how Ashbourne dancers have embraced the spooky fun, and what makes the annual Red Carpet Christmas Class such a special night for everyone. Liz and Mark also lift the curtain on how themes are chosen for freestyles, the planning that goes into decorations and accessibility, and how they ensure no one ever feels pressured to dress up.
Tune in for a light-hearted chat about creativity, community spirit, and what it really takes to bring Ceroc Inspire’s themed events to life.

Hello and welcome to the Rock Inspired Dance Inspiration Podcast. I'm Liz.
SPEAKER_01:And I'm Mark. And we're here keeping you up to date with everything that's going on into Rock Inspire.
SPEAKER_02:So let's get started. So we thought with Halloween coming up that it was the perfect time to decide on themes and talk about what goes into the planning and why some work better than others at what what different venues.
SPEAKER_01:But we have learned over the years, haven't we, that dressing up is not everybody's cup of tea.
SPEAKER_02:It really isn't. Not everybody has something in the wardrobe that suits the theme. Quite often people say, Oh, I don't think I've got anything that colour, or I don't think I or I don't wear that colour. I think what what we want our dancers to understand is that it's absolutely not compulsory to dress to a theme to be able to come to our events. It's themed, we decorate the room, but we absolutely do not mind what you're wearing as long as it's something decent. It's a lot and you can dance in it.
SPEAKER_01:Like the last one, the silver soiree.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, we'll decorate it up as a silver soiree.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:Up to you if you wear silver.
SPEAKER_02:Absolutely. And I mean, I don't do silver and white because they're not my colours. Um, so I really struggled. So I would I'd put on some silver jewellery and a white t-shirt, and that was about me, really. But there were some really beautiful silver outfits that people came in, guys had some really great shirts, ladies had some sort of thing. Yeah. So people really embraced that theme, and it was absolutely lovely to see. But again, people that didn't embrace the theme equally had a great night. So it doesn't really matter what you're wearing as long as you come and have a great night. It's our mindset, I think, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. So the reason we talk about themes this month, as it's October, and we have Halloween coming up.
SPEAKER_02:We do.
SPEAKER_01:And we've sort of like learnt with Halloween, haven't we?
SPEAKER_02:Yeah. People well, Halloween at Sorot classes is like a whole across franchise thing. Everybody's doing Halloween nights throughout the whole of that week, aren't they?
SPEAKER_00:Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:Excuse me. And we used to do that. We used to dress up Derby with loads and loads of Halloween-themed things. We used to have like loads of Halloween chocolate and all that kind of stuff. And people would come and dress up, and we'd have loads of photographs and we'd have a competition, wouldn't we, for the best? Yeah, get the bar to judge them.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, the bar staff to judge them. But I think it became a point where quite a few people said to us that they actually don't enjoy Halloween night and that they won't be coming for that week because they don't enjoy it. And it wasn't just one or two, it was a lot of dancers that said a lot of numbers.
SPEAKER_01:Numbers went down.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, the attendance went down on Halloween nights because people didn't embrace it. And so it was a lot more people didn't enjoy it than did, so we stopped doing them, didn't we? For just for Derby.
SPEAKER_01:So that was Derby. But this year with Ashbourne, they are wanting to embrace Halloween.
SPEAKER_02:They absolutely are wanting to embrace it. But again, Ashbourne is a brand new class. I don't think we did it last year, but we'd only just opened two weeks before, hadn't we? So we didn't really know anybody then and didn't really get a feel for how they felt. So this would be our first Halloween class night at Soroc Ashbourne. So if anybody really feels that they want to dress up and come to a Halloween dance, then please come over to Sorrock Ashbourne and we will take photographs and we will do prizes for the best dressed and we'll have Halloween chocolate, just the same as we would have done it in the past. But what we are doing is we're responding to what our dancers are telling us and taking the overall majority of opinion, aren't we? And saying, you know, Derby, it doesn't work out, but Ashbourne. And maybe next year when we're at Naburt and class, maybe we'll do one there if they're if they're feeling it.
SPEAKER_01:Well, I think we'll just ask them at the time and see what they feel like.
SPEAKER_02:I think the thing is that if there's ever a celebration like Valentine's, we did Valentine's, it actually fell on a class night, didn't it, a couple of years ago? And it was really awkward not to do anything. So we did lovies all around, didn't we? Rather than it being a couple's thing, because not everybody is in a couple, not everybody's in a relationship. Some people have been on their own for a long time, some people might be newly on their own. Some people just don't do Valentine's Day and don't want to come to an event where they're expected to be lovey-dovey. So we actually had Valentine's hot chocolates, didn't we, to give people, but other sweets as well.
SPEAKER_01:We had a little clipboard as well that you can put the notes on.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, so we put a board up with post-its to say what you what who do you love? What do you love? And people put, I love my dance family, or I love my food. I love my dog. I love my dog, yeah. And it was amazing. That board was absolutely amazing. It just was it showed what love actually is, as in not just between two cup two people in a couple, it's actually just love is all around. It was a brilliant night that was, but obviously that was just uh that's what it was all for, isn't it? Yeah. We couldn't ignore it. It was Valentine's Day, so we we knew we had to do something, so we did a Valentine's class, but we made it so that it was about everybody rather than a couple. So that actually worked, didn't it? A lot of people came to that, so that was good. Yeah, it's kind of through the new members, didn't it, that walked through the door the first time on that night. What is this? Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01:So the other reason for themes as well is because obviously it's October Halloween. Then the next part is Christmas. Christmas is coming. Our favourite point, our red carpet Christmas class night.
SPEAKER_02:It is a focal point for us in December because we don't actually run any freestars in December because it's a really busy month for everybody. There are work dues, there are family celebrations, and it just makes sense to take the pressure off the dancers. They don't have to worry about missing our nights, they can go off and enjoy their party nights, and we get to have one as well with our crew, which is all good.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, so it's things we've learned over the years, isn't it? That it's like December now. Why make you actually choose between going to see your family or your work colleagues or whatever you might have on and coming to a freestyle?
SPEAKER_02:Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:So it takes like as Liz says, takes the pressure off a bit. So we have the one big thing called the the red carpet class.
SPEAKER_02:The Christmas red carpet class night, which has been going on for many years now. In fact, I need to have a look and see how many we've actually done, but we must be coming up to eight or ten. We must be. We've been doing it for such a long time.
SPEAKER_00:I can't remember.
SPEAKER_02:Such a good night. So it's it is the normal class night, but we have an extension till half past eleven, so you can dance for longer. And we have a bring and share buffet, so everybody brings an item of food for the buffet table, and it's usually piled high with food, which is amazing. And at the end of the night, if there's any left, Mark and I take it to the homeless, don't we? Yeah. At the end of the night. Or we take it the next day if we can.
SPEAKER_01:And if if it is perishables, we have done it before. We have driven round the streets trying to find homeless people.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:And we have to give them that too so they can eat it on that night.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, we have done that in the past on the way home.
SPEAKER_01:So that's that's always a but you've missed the most important part about the red carpet night. And it's the red carpet night because we roll out the red carpet.
SPEAKER_02:We do. Actually roll out their red carpet all the way up to the door to welcome you to your venue for your Christmas class night. And that's our way of saying thank you, isn't it, to for supporting us all year long. Yes. So yeah, we we love the red carpet. That's why we call it that, really. But we have a photo booth where you can put on your whatever you want to wear for Christmas. So it might be your Christmas jump or your Christmas t-shirt or your smart Christmas stuff, whatever you want to do.
SPEAKER_01:All the way up to your fancy Christmas dress, yeah, and your shoes.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, whatever you want to wear for that event is just perfect. It doesn't matter, everybody blends in, and we have taken some really great photographs, haven't we, on that night? Fun photographs as well, funny ones. People come and take funny photos for Christmas as well.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, really embrace it.
SPEAKER_02:And we also have a raffle, which we will be starting to sell on the beginning of November, first class night in November. All of the proceeds of that raffle go to the Stroke Association, who Sorok is partnered with. People donate raffle prizes. Mark and I donate raffle prizes. We will have Dan is usually the uh dance lesson with Dan is usually the top prize. This year we will be asking Nick if she will do one as well.
SPEAKER_01:This year, because we've got Nick as well. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:Two double double. Double bubble. Two double that. Yeah, so hopefully we'll make a little bit extra money if we've got two teachers offering a dance lesson. It's a half-hour dance lesson um to a person or a couple. Or a group, it depends.
SPEAKER_01:If you do want to donate anything for the raffle, just give Liz a shout and we can sort something out.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah. Yeah. I mean, we we have already throughout the year been purchasing little things for the raffle, haven't we? We do it throughout the year. When we see things, I think, oh, that'd be good for the raffle, and that'd be good for the raffle. So that's our donation to the Stroight Association. We donate the raffle prizes. Sometimes people do donate things themselves that they've made or that will bring in that they want to raise money for, so that that actually works quite nicely. And the best part of the night is we have our lessons, don't we?
SPEAKER_01:We have a Christmas fun class night.
SPEAKER_02:So Dan is pretty good at pulling some really fun classes out of the hat for our red carpet night. He loves that night, it's his night. We did it early last year because he was going away.
SPEAKER_01:We had a Roweda last year, was it?
SPEAKER_02:A Roweda. Roweda.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah. Well, Nick and Dan this year are planning something a little bit special, aren't they? Something a little bit different. So yeah, that that will be fun. We'll we'll keep that to ourselves and let them find out on the night. But it's fun for everybody, it's not you don't have to be a certain level of dancing to be able to participate. It's all fun. And there are a lot of laughter, isn't there? When with the the dance, it's a proper party atmosphere, isn't it? It's a proper Christmas party.
SPEAKER_01:We've had all sorts, haven't we? We've had the Olympics.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:We've had the Raweda. We've had was it Fat Man?
SPEAKER_02:Fat Man, yeah. Just to name a few. We've had quite a few, haven't we?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:But yeah, it's it's a really good night. So that's on the 15th of December, so get that in your diary and make sure that you come and join us on that night. It is the best fun night ever. It really is. We're also going to still be open on the 22nd of December, I'm not.
SPEAKER_01:I'm just gonna say, just because it's a red carpet night doesn't mean it's the last one before Christmas.
SPEAKER_02:The last one, it's just that when we did it, the last one before Christmas last year, it was quieter because people had Christmas party nights and things, and it was a bit too close for Christmas. So we actually decided to bring it back a week earlier to make it sort of the start to your Christmas.
SPEAKER_01:December, you can celebrate all month-long Christmas.
SPEAKER_02:Exactly. And when we've got our crew do, haven't we? On the 5th, is it?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, 5th of December.
SPEAKER_02:So we'll be out on the 22nd of December for a Christmassy class night with mince pies, Christmas cake, festive treats. I don't know, a bit of Stolen. What do you think?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, I might even pop out some Christmas tunes.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, it might pop out a few Christmas tunes so we can just have a giggle. But yeah, after the 22nd, we do take a week off, don't we?
SPEAKER_01:Because we need to recharge our trees.
SPEAKER_02:We're a bit tired by then, aren't we? So we have time to rest and recharge and spend some time with our family and friends ourselves while everybody else is celebrating their Christ Christmas in their way, don't we? And then we will be open again on the 5th of January.
SPEAKER_01:That'll be a new year, which means new freestyles. New freestyle themes, maybe.
SPEAKER_02:I know it took me ages to think of the themes, didn't it? And I still haven't completely finished it because we have a lot more freestyles next year than we've had this year.
SPEAKER_01:I'll just have a bit as well. And a new class night in Burton.
SPEAKER_02:Ah, a new class night in Burton. Yeah, that'd be amazing. I can't wait for that. So themes.
SPEAKER_01:How are you gonna work out your themes?
SPEAKER_02:How am I gonna work out my themes?
SPEAKER_01:Because don't look at me, it's not me that works out the themes.
SPEAKER_02:It's me.
SPEAKER_01:I sort of like just go, yeah, that's fine. Or provide the music or just say we're we're doing this, Mark.
SPEAKER_02:If you see anything that I can use for the theme, let me know. I mean, themes themselves, when I I sit and think about them, I brainstorm them with myself, really. And they have to be easy for dancers to embrace. There is no point in putting a really difficult theme on that people can't embrace. It needs to be well, the decorations need to be practical to find or easy to find.
SPEAKER_01:If you find a difficult theme, then you're gonna have difficulty finding the decorations.
SPEAKER_02:You really are, and me and a glue gun are gonna be best friends, aren't we? Oh yeah. Like that glue gun. Yeah, so the theme should work for a dance environment, obviously, and not feel forced. It should feel natural when people walk into it, and it has to be something that people can actually wear something that they already own, or they can find something small and affordable that would might maybe match, like I don't know, a piece of jewellery or a tie or a waistcoat or a badge. Yeah, something. I mean, for the most part, people people come in the colour, don't they? But if not, they usually use jewellery.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, even if it's a ribbon around your hair in the same colour or whatever.
SPEAKER_02:Exactly. Or not at all if you don't want to. It it really doesn't matter. It is absolutely optional. We never want anybody to feel pressured to fit in.
SPEAKER_01:This is why we decorate the old area.
SPEAKER_02:Exactly. The venue. I mean, I have quite a few people that come to the desk and say, Oh, I didn't realise it was a theme night. Oh, I'm sorry, I'm not in the right colour. Please don't apologize. Just just come as you want. The fact that you've arrived to join the us for the night is enough. We're not bothered whether you're wearing the right colour or not.
SPEAKER_01:No, we dress the venue up to look nice so that when you come in, it looks good for a freestyle.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, and we don't we ourselves don't always have the right colour for the theme that we've chosen to do. It's more about the decorations in the venue, really. And we don't rush out buying clothes especially for themes usually, unless it's something like neon that you really need something to wear. But for the most part, we we're just going what we've got in the wardrobe, don't we?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, I've not quite resorted to putting on my work clothes to come for the neon yet.
SPEAKER_02:No, no, no, you could do that. So, yeah, next year I have got some repeat of some of the ones that we already do that are quite popular.
SPEAKER_01:My favourite winter warmer.
SPEAKER_02:The winter warmer is always a fun one with my little mittens. Yeah, the little log fire and the mittens, the mitten garlands and stuff like that. It's I don't know, when you come in from the cold outside in the car park and you walk in and you see a little log fire fire imitation log fire, obviously not the real thing, and your little mittens and stuff like that, it just makes you feel cozy, doesn't it?
SPEAKER_00:Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:I I like that one, but I have we have one that we've been floating for quite some time.
SPEAKER_01:Several years for quite a few years, and we're wondering.
SPEAKER_02:Before we actually even bought the franchise, we were floating this idea, weren't we? When we were working for the previous franchisee. So bubbles and bow ties is our new theme. So excited about it, honestly.
SPEAKER_01:I can eventually, I can eventually use the bubble lights that we bought, I think, three years ago.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, but we're not sure about them for the five years.
SPEAKER_01:But I'm not sure how it's going to work.
SPEAKER_02:Because you have to fill them with gallons of water day, so I'm not quite sure.
SPEAKER_01:I could fill them with gallons of water, but we could probably do it at Rolls Royce.
SPEAKER_02:I mean, that's that's probably where we're going to do it, isn't it? At Rolls Royce. I think it'd be easier there. But you know, with that, we say bow ties, but you can wear a bow in your hair if you're a woman, or just like some kind of bow dress with a bow on it or anything. And for a guy, bow ties is easy, so it is actually an easy theme. We just like the bubbles idea, don't we? Yeah. So we're probably gonna get some bubbles that people can blow, I think, and have some little bubble lamps and things.
SPEAKER_01:I'll just buy myself, I'll buy myself a bubble wrap t-shirt.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, bubble wrap, yeah, bubble wrap t-shirt. Oh my god, everybody'll be popping you all night. I'll be popping you all night. Yeah. So all that glitters, Sorot Burton is always an immensely popular night, and you know, we're gonna carry that on. We love all the glitters, don't we?
SPEAKER_00:Oh yeah. All the glittery stuff. Anything, any colour, glitter, plenty of glitter.
SPEAKER_02:If you want to. If you want to, absolutely. And Neon Glare will be back. I think we're doing that at Burton again, but I'm not 100% sure yet. We haven't completely nailed down where we're doing what theme yet.
SPEAKER_01:Well, we had it at Derby this year, didn't we?
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, but we have got more two-room and three-room events at Burton now, so possibly it might be at Derby, but we'll see. Bringing the masquerade ball back to Derby, aren't we? Because we love a ball.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, you can get your masks, uh. You've got to love a ball, I think.
SPEAKER_02:And I think photo booth for that one absolutely date.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:We've got a photo booth, it's all good fun. Denim and Diamonds will be back. We do like a bit of Denim and Diamonds. It's our uh classy dress down event, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, come in your jeans and a t-shirt, job done.
SPEAKER_02:But to make life easier for you in July, we decided to do a colours of the rainbow theme. So literally you can come in whatever colour you like, because it actually doesn't matter. Everybody will be wearing different colours, and we'll just decorate the venue in lots of different colours. So it'll just be real fun, won't it?
SPEAKER_01:Just then, yeah, then then next we travel a Mexico style.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, fiesta free style. We loved that, didn't we? With the pinana, pinata over it.
SPEAKER_01:Pinata hanging around.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, we might let people have a go at bashing that this year. Rainbow flags everywhere and rainbows and Mexican flags and Mexican everything like Mexican hats. Yeah, that'll be really fun, won't it?
SPEAKER_01:But I'm glad to see that you're bringing the main one back.
SPEAKER_02:Dancing in Vegas! Oh my god, dancing in Vegas was so much fun. We had games tables, didn't we?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, Dan the Croupier.
SPEAKER_02:Dan the Crupier, Dan was brilliant, and Nick.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02:Dan loved it. There's in his element behind that table. In fact, there was more people around the tables than we were on the dance floor.
SPEAKER_01:I knew when he opened the table, because my dance floor disappeared.
unknown:Yeah, it did.
SPEAKER_01:It's quite you and the cheese table.
SPEAKER_02:Oh I know.
SPEAKER_01:Might do the cheese table for the Vegas thing, but no, because you open the cheese table and everybody goes off the dance floor to get crackers and cheese.
SPEAKER_02:They do.
SPEAKER_01:And I'm like, where's everybody gone?
SPEAKER_02:The cheese table's pretty popular, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:Well I'll stick that in one of the freestyles this year, we'll do something with that. But we literally had so much fun opening our casino tables, didn't we?
SPEAKER_00:Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:And so we are definitely doing that again at the end of next year at Derby. I think it works really well there. And it's just so much fun. So if anybody is particularly up on being a crew PA, please let us know because the more the merrier.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, if it's your past time, let us know.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, if you have to do it for a job, please let us know. Yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_01:Bring the table.
SPEAKER_02:So Burton.
SPEAKER_01:Rhythm fusions.
SPEAKER_02:How many have we got next year? We've got a four next year. We decided we'd do them quarterly because they're a really nice event to have. Obviously, that takes a little bit of planning with local operators and within Sorok because we clashed, didn't we, with our last rhythm fusion with Daventry, unfortunately. Hopefully, Sorok have sorted the diary for us all now so we don't clash with each other.
SPEAKER_01:I think the big rumours are all on a diary now, aren't they? So much booked off.
SPEAKER_02:They are, but we had a very successful Latin room with our lovely Dan, didn't we?
SPEAKER_00:Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:This last time. People loved the Latin room, that was fabulous. Last the last one, was it the when did we last have one? Was it September?
SPEAKER_01:28th. No, the one before that. Was it May before? 27th, yeah.
SPEAKER_02:It was May, and we introduced the lovely Allie Hartland, didn't we? Doing a tango room, which was also popular. And she is key to come back and do some more. So we will definitely be incorporate incorporating a tango room at our rhythm fusion events going forward. And obviously, the lovely TorCon does a fabulous musicality lesson and a blues room, doesn't she? So we have got two and three room events at Burton. Not 100% sure what we're doing with them yet, but we have got the four rhythm fusions, we have got all the glitters, and then we'll decide on a name for the two room.
SPEAKER_01:They're all they're all in planning process.
SPEAKER_02:They are in planning process because yeah, I think I overwhelmed myself a little bit with the because I wanted new themes for this year, and then I literally my brain sort of burnt out. So yeah, but we're still finalising it, aren't we?
SPEAKER_01:It's not only that, there's a lot that actually goes into planning the freestyles. We can't just decide a month ago and go, we're gonna have a freestyle in a month.
SPEAKER_02:No, no, no, no, no, no. We don't do pop-ups.
SPEAKER_01:We have to book probably a year in advance.
SPEAKER_02:More than that, we've got our 2027 events booked already.
SPEAKER_01:So that we can have the dates that we need and we know where we are and get everything planned for it.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, and get all the decorations in and get all the themes and all the marketing done. So yeah, it's it it there's a lot to do, isn't there? But I just think it's so much fun, isn't it? Coming up with new ideas and watching the dances embrace them. They'll come and tell us how much they love the decorations and enjoy embracing them. So it's worth it.
SPEAKER_01:It's the whole thing. We enjoy doing this because it's so much fun. You guys make it so much fun.
SPEAKER_02:Absolutely, and it keeps things fresh, doesn't it? It gives everybody a chance to express themselves in their own way. So, like I say, they don't have to wear the theme, they can't come in something completely themed or something a little bit themed or a token gesture, it really doesn't matter. We just want you to come and enjoy your night. It's more about the decorations of the room, not not making people feel pressured to go out and buy a new outfit if they don't have to. Hit the charity shop and see what they've got.
SPEAKER_01:It's not even that, just come in whatever.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_01:As we say, this is why we dress the venue up.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, make it nice for you.
SPEAKER_01:It looks like the theme, yeah, and you can come in whatever you want to come in.
SPEAKER_02:Absolutely. So I would say make sure that you keep an eye on our Facebook page for the theme nights in the Derby Facebook group and on Instagram, TikTok. We will put raffle updates and we always put our photos for events on Facebook. If you want to see the photographs and you are not on social media and there are photographs of you, please let me know and I'll sort out I don't know, a Google spreadsheet or something so people can have a look at them out there so they can still see them. Yeah, we would definitely sort something out because not everybody is on social media, are they?
SPEAKER_00:No.
SPEAKER_02:And I literally could not possibly fit all of the photographs in emails. That just wouldn't happen. So I think you know, people let me know that they want the photographs, or when I take the photograph, if you say to me, can you send that to me? Just give me a phone number and I'll send it on WhatsApp or something like that.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, it always comes to worse email.
SPEAKER_02:Email, yeah. Yeah, you don't have to give me your email to use for marketing, but I can just use it to send you your photograph if you choose.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:Brilliant.
SPEAKER_01:Hooray.
