Welcome to Mindful Movement Matters, where we explore how yoga and intentional movement become pathways to living your best life, especially after 50. I'm Richelle Schneider, founder of Fusion Yoga by GET'N FIT in Ovid, Colorado, and I've been guiding adults through transformative wellness journeys for over 20 years. With my background in exercise science and extensive yoga training, I've learned that the most profound changes happen, not when we push harder, but when we listen deeper. This podcast isn't about perfect poses or Instagram worthy flexibility. It is about discovering what your body and breath can teach you about finding calm in chaos, honoring your edges, and creating sustainable wellness that honors exactly where you are today. Whether you're curious about yoga, navigating health changes, or simply seeking practical wisdom for living well, you'll find evidence based insights and gentle guidance that meets you exactly where you are. Because true wellness isn't about becoming someone else. It's about becoming more authentically you. One breath at a time. Let's explore what mindful movement can teach us about living well, finding sanctuary, how yoga creates stillness. In a chaotic world, in a world that never stops spinning, where news cycles, social media and personal responsibilities bombard us constantly finding stillness seems almost impossible. Our minds operate like computers with dozens of tabs, open work issues, family concerns, health worries, global anxieties, all running simultaneously draining our mental battery. But what if there was a place where you could close those tabs even temporarily, from human doing to human being? When we step onto our yoga mats, something magical happens. That first contact between feet and mat acts like a switch in our brains. Suddenly we transition from human doing or human worrying to simply human being. The outside world begins to fade. The room itself seems to recede as we focus inward on our breathing, on the sensations in our bodies on the present moment. In that space, we're no longer captive to our endless to-do lists or the swirling chaos beyond our personal bubble. This transition isn't just nice, it's necessary. Breath, the ultimate anchor. What deepens this sanctuary feeling? Usually it begins with the breath. Breathing is typically an involuntary function, something our bodies do without conscious thought. But in yoga, we make this unconscious process conscious. We pay attention to how deeply we're breathing, how quickly or slowly which parts of our body expand and contract with each inhale and exhale. This simple act of paying attention to your breathing helps push those open tabs further into the background. It creates space. Mental space that allows us to fully inhabit the present moment without the constant forward rushing momentum that characterizes so much of modern life. Finding your edge a lesson in boundaries. One of yoga's most valuable lessons happens when we reach our edge. That point where a pose becomes challenging, but still sustainable. Learning to recognize this edge on our mats teaches us something profound about life beyond them As we age, unexpected health complications arise, chronic illnesses develop. Okay. Arthritis makes previously simple tasks more difficult. These changes can be frustrating, even devastating. But on our yoga mats, we learn how to adjust, how to modify, how to honor where we are to rather than where we were yesterday when we practice finding and respecting our edge on the mat. We're better equipped to do the same in those other 23 hours of the day. We learn to recognize when pushing through would deplete rather than strengthen us when stopping and resting now will actually allow us to accomplish more later. This isn't giving up it's wisdom, the power of stillness. Perhaps the most profound part of yoga practice is the final relaxation or Shavasana. Interestingly, some students find this the most challenging aspect of practice, not because it's physically demanding, but precisely because it isn't. It requires us to simply be still. In a culture that values productivity and constant action, stillness can feel uncomfortable even wrong. But this final integration time is very crucial. It allows our bodies to absorb the benefits of practice, our nervous systems to reset and our minds to process the experience. Through guided relaxation and conscious breathing, we sink deeper into stillness. And in that stillness, transformation happens. Our batteries recharge, our systems recalibrate. We emerge not just physically relaxed, but mentally refreshed, living beyond the mat. The real magic of yoga happens not in the perfect execution of poses, but in how our practice transforms our everyday lives. When life throws challenges our way, as it inevitably will, we have resources to draw upon. We've practiced listening to our bodies rather than pushing through pain. We've learned to let go of competition with others and comparison to our past selves, we've experienced the release that comes from processing emotions through physical movement. We've discovered the rejuvenation that comes from genuine rest. Especially as we age, these lessons become increasingly valuable when chronic pain or illness limits what we can do when energy reserves aren't what they once were. The ability to honor our boundaries without judgment becomes essential to living well, the mat as a training ground. Every time we step onto our mats, we're different people. The pose that brought peace yesterday might bring challenge today. The practice that felt impossible last week might flow easily. This time. Each session offers new opportunities to learn how we can best navigate situations beyond our control. This is especially relevant in today's world where so much negativity comes at us from external sources. This constant barrage can be disheartening, crushing our spirits, and fueling frustration or anger on our mats. We process these emotions. We experience frustration when poses don't work. We feel impatience when progress seems slow. We encounter joy when something suddenly clicks. Through these experiences, we develop resilience not by avoiding difficult emotions, but by moving through them. Breath by breath, moment by moment, your invitation to stillness. Your yoga mat is waiting to become your sanctuary from chaos, your training ground for life. It offers not an escape from real reality, but a more grounded way of engaging with it. In a world that demands constant doing, give yourself permission to simply be. Close a few tabs. Take a few conscious breaths, find your edge and honor it. Embrace stillness. Even briefly. The chaos will still be there tomorrow, but with regular practice, you'll have the tools to navigate it with more grace, wisdom, and self-compassion. Your sanctuary awaits. One breath, one moment. One mindful movement at a time. Thanks for joining me on Mindful Movement Matters. I hope today's topic gave you something useful to carry into your daily life.
