Welcome to Mindful Movement Matters, where we explore how yoga and intentional movement become pathways to living your best life, especially after 50. I'm Richelle Schneider, founder of Fusion Yoga by GET'N FIT in Ovid, Colorado, and I've been guiding adults through transformative wellness journeys for over 20 years. With my background in exercise science and extensive yoga training, I've learned that the most profound changes happen, not when we push harder, but when we listen deeper. This podcast isn't about perfect poses or Instagram worthy flexibility. It is about discovering what your body and breath can teach you about finding calm and chaos, honoring your edges, and creating sustainable wellness that honors exactly where you are today. Whether you're curious about yoga, navigating health changes, or simply seeking practical wisdom for living well. You'll find evidence-based insights and gentle guidance that meets you exactly where you are. Because true wellness isn't about becoming someone else. It's about becoming more authentically you. One mindful breath at a time. Let's explore what mindful movement can teach us about moving well. This is what's important, how yoga helps you discover what truly matters. You wake up to the ping of emails, your phone buzzes with news alerts, social media notifications pile up. Your calendar reminds you of three overlapping commitments. Your to-do list has somehow grown overnight, and that's all before breakfast. Poet Ian Thomas captured this modern predicament perfectly and every day the world will drag you by the hand yelling. This is important and this is important, and this is important. You need to worry about this and this and this. And each day it's up to you to yank your hand back, put it on your heart and say. No, this is what's important, but how do we find the strength to yank our hands back? How do we quiet the outside noise long enough to discover what truly deserves our attention and energy? For many, the answer is found on a yoga mat. The science of finding focus in a 2021 review, experts found that yoga can help your brain focus better and calm down. It trains you to pay attention to what's happening right now, which makes it easier to think clearly and feel good emotionally. This isn't simply due to physical exercise. The mindfulness component of yoga plays a crucial role. When we practice yoga, we're not just stretching our bodies. We're training our minds to notice when our attention wanders and gently bring it back, a skill that becomes increasingly valuable off the mat, your mat as a laboratory for discovery. Yoga is not always comfortable. As we remind our students, there are times when poses are difficult. Our emotions flare without warning, or our energy is just not that into class that day. This discomfort serves a purpose. It creates the perfect laboratory for discovering what really matters to you. When you're holding a challenging pose and your mind is screaming for you to come out of it, you have a choice. You can react to discomfort or you can breathe through it observing your thoughts without being controlled by them. This is the same choice we face when the world grabs us by the hand. Do we automatically react to every demand? Or can we pause, breathe, and decide what truly deserves our attention. Finding your center step by step. Let's break down how yoga helps you develop this ability goal. Develop the ability to consciously choose what deserves your focus skills. We need to build. Present moment awareness. Breath control is an anchor ability to observe thoughts without immediately reacting. Physical centering, and grounding practices that will help develop those skills. Mindful yoga sequences that challenge your attention. Breath centered meditation. Body scanning techniques, yoga, nidra or yoga, sleep for deep relaxation and clarity. Daily actions we can take start small for beginners. Maybe it's taking a two minute sacred pause each morning sitting comfortably. Placing your hands on your heart and taking 10 slow deep breaths, noticing what feels important to you in that moment and for that day. If you wanna build consistency, maybe add five minute evening reflections in a comfortable seated position, ask yourself, what grabbed my attention today? I. Was it truly important to me? Or was it the world pulling at my hand? Deepening a practice, incorporate a 15 minute flow that includes both movement and stillness. Use this time to practice noticing when your mind wanders and gently bring it back to your breath. And body your invitation to discover. Remember that on our mats, we create a safe space to explore our bodies, minds, and spirits. This exploration isn't just physical. It's a journey toward discovering what truly matters in our lives. As we say in our fusion yoga principles, when stepping on your mat, do so with an open mind and heart so you can be receptive to new experiences. This openness allows you to hear the quiet voice inside that knows what's important, even when the world is shouting for your attention. The next time you feel overwhelmed by the constant pull of outside demands, remember that you have a choice. You can come to your mat, find your breath, and reconnect with what matters most to you. Because at the end of the day, yoga isn't just about becoming more flexible or stronger. It is about developing the awareness and strength to put your hand on your heart and say, with conviction, no. This is what's important. What helps you quiet the outside noise and focus on what truly matters. Share your experience in the comments or join us for a class to explore this practice in person.
