Welcome to the The Positive Growth Doctor Podcast®! I am your host, Dr. Christina Wilson.
I have a question for you! Ask yourself, Am I currently in "Tarshish" (the place I chose) because I’m afraid of what will happen in "Nineveh" (the place God pointed to)?
Let’s take a deeper look at Jonah’s story as you contemplate this question.
Jonah was a disobedient prophet who suffered the consequences for his disobedience. When he chose his own path over Gods, he fell overboard in a storm and was swallowed by a whale.
God gave him a message to share with the Ninevites. He initially didn’t want to do it, and you know what happened as a result.
By the way, I have learned the hard way that when I take my own route, I suffer the consequences too. In fact when God says go, I go!
After he survived the whale, he went to Ninveah to complete his God set mission. They listened to God’s message and chose to repent as a result.
In this episode, we’re exploring obedience and the impact of choices.
We often think of Jonah as a story about a big fish, but it’s actually a story about a mindset of "selective obedience."
Yes! Take that in for a minute. This episode addresses the spiritual warfare of avoidance.

The Anatomy of Avoidance: Why We Choose Tarshish Over God’s Assignment
I have a bigger question for you. Ask yourself, “In what area of my life am I practicing ‘delayed obedience’?”
Ouch! I know! This one that connects to a very deep place for all of us at some point in our lives.
What about this.. Are the origins coming from a Spirit of Comparison?
We often run from our specific calling because we are busy comparing our "Nineveh" to someone else’s "Tarshish." We want their easy path, so we ignore our assigned one.
God often calls us to things that are so important even when it is scary. He knows what He is doing! Right? Remember that when you are experiencing fear.
Surviving the Storm: Strategies for Shifting from Fear to Full Surrender
Here is the key mindset shift. Are you ready? Understand that delayed obedience is still disobedience.
So, running from God’s will does not lead to freedom; it leads to a storm and so much more, just like Noah. Let that marinate for a bit.
Remember that God’s commands are not meant to cage you in; they are a hedge of protection or His divine protection.
That means a lot of things. Following Him into the "difficult" places is where we find the most peace.
Also, don’t feel caged in by God’s commands.Consider that this might be His protecting us from the route we desire.
Here are 2 strategies for shifting your mindset away from one of fear and selective obedience.
1. The "Cost-Counting" Flip
When we experience fear, we often calculate the cost of obeying (loss of comfort, potential failure, judgment) rather than the cost of disobeying.
The Strategy is called the Use a "Two-Way Mirror" exercise.
Mirror A: What do I lose if I say "Yes" to God? (Comfort, ego, predictability).
Mirror B: What do I lose if I stay in my "selective" obedience? (Peace, divine protection, the opportunity to see God’s power, the salvation of others).
The Shift occurs when you realize that the "storm" caused by running is always more expensive than the "sacrifice" caused by staying.
2) Another strategy is The "Internal Compass" Reset
In the belly of the fish, Jonah’s mindset shifted when he stopped looking at the seaweed around his head and started looking toward God’s holy temple (Jonah 2:4).
This strategy uses The 5-Second Rule of Faith. When the Holy Spirit nudges you to do something, you have a five-second window before your "fear-brain" talks you out of it.
The Shift occurs when you move before the "selective" logic kicks in. If you think, I should pray for her, do it before you can think, But it might be awkward.
I want to leave you with a Spiritual Warfare Tip: The enemy wins in the "overthinking" phase. Strike back with immediate, messy action.
I hope this helped! Let’s meet up again next week for another episode. Be blessed!
