Welcome to the The Positive Growth Doctor Podcast®! I am your host, Dr. Christina Wilson.
Here is a question for you. If you removed your current titles (job, status, roles), would you still feel secure in your identity as a daughter of God?
Yes! Our precious Father isn’t interested in those things alone. It is about loving one another as he commanded (first and foremost) and your actions in life and the roles you serve in (wife, mother, friend, ministry, and so much more).
You have likely heard that the things you collect here on earth, you don’t take with you.
For example, I’m not going to be Dr. Wilson in heaven, but God expects me to do good with what I have while I am here.
Years ago, I was contemplating a decision that I needed to make. Someone reminded me that there is only one question to ask myself. “If I choose this, will it bring me closer to God? If not, it’s not for me.”
Think of this as a litmus test for life. It is my go to when I am unsure about something or someone.
In this episode, we look at prioritizing God and understanding the warfare of comparison.
We also tackle the modern pressure to find identity in roles (career, social media status, or "the perfect life") rather than the Creator.

The Yardstick of the Enemy: Identifying the Spiritual Warfare of Comparison
Here is another question for you to consider. When you look at other women's lives, does it move you toward prayer and support for them, or toward a feeling of lack in yourself?
I used to get self-conscious and unsure. I made the shift to leave that behind and dive into sharing love and support for other women. I am truly excited when they achieve their milestones and blessings. I love it!
Remember that God’s plan for you is different from God’s plan for me. We are all called to different things in the life He gave us.
In terms of the spirit of comparison, social media creates a "spiritual yardstick" where we measure our internal mess against someone else's highlight reel, which leads to a mindset of scarcity.
The biblical principle here is from Matthew 6:33—Seeking the Kingdom first. When God is the priority, "things," such as our choices, careers, accolades find their proper, non-destructive place. There is a place for those things.
Ultimately, comparison dies when you fix your eyes on our amazing God. You can't look sideways at your neighbor if you are looking up at your Father.
Seeking the Kingdom First: Practical Ways to Re-Center Your Identity in Christ
So, what is God calling you to do? You have to focus in on him and spend quality time to hear from Him. If not, it can be confusing.
I’m talking about those times when you are doing life without Him or only inviting Him in at times. It must be consistent.
I have learned that the closer I am to God, the better able I am to hear from Him. This means that I dive into prayer and His word… consistently and daily!
Social media is not helpful because it distracts you from what matters. As you scroll through Facebook, you collect more things to do. It’s like Keeping Up with the Jones’s.
You might think, “Oh, I need to start cooking new recipes, meal planning, add travel ball for the kids, or change the way I workout.”
You end up adding more to your plate because it never feels like enough. One of the lies that women buy into is that they don’t have enough time. Yet, we all have the same amount of hours in a day and a week.
Women often believe they can do it all, but that is simply not true. I know! I have been one of them.
Nor can we be everything to everyone. When you think you can, it leads to self-doubt and burnout.
King David sought out the Lord when making decisions several times. You can see it throughout the bible.
He started his day off with God. This is the best way to counter Satan, the Father of Lies. We must stay rooted in His truth.
If you think you don’t have time for everything, what are you going to give up? Something will have to give. It is important that YOUR plans don’t supersede God’s.
If you are not connected with God’s plan, you will not only miss out on the joy and peace I was referring to in the last episode but also experience the consequences of choosing your own way, which is often the easy route.
Replace Satan’s lies with God’s truth. There is always time for what God has in store for you.
He does not make mistakes and prepares you along the way. So if you are concerned about the timing, He is not when it is within his plan. He will find a way for you!
Luke 10: 38-42 brings this point home with the story of Mary and Martha. Remember how Mary sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his message while Martha was scurrying around and distracted by being the hostess with the mostess?
Y’all, I was a Martha for so so long and still am at times.
Martha got in her own way. She couldn’t hear Jesus’s important message because she was so focused on her own work.
We bring glory to God when we relinquish control and remove the self-focus and place it on him.
Martha was up to her ears in perfectionistic burnout. She wasn’t walking in His truth. Don’t be like Martha and miss the boat of what God has for you.
When we remember these things, our faith mindset falls into place. I want to leave you with this verse to meditate on when it comes to making choices aligned with God’s will. Your will be done - Matthew 6:10.
I hope this helped! Let’s meet up again next week for another episode. Be blessed!
