Episode 38 – Tearing Down the Strongholds: Silencing the Lies That Hold You Back

Episode Transcript

Welcome to the The Positive Growth Doctor Podcast®! I am your host, Dr. Christina Wilson.

Today, we continue our series, Unshakable Daughter: Reclaiming Your Identity in Christ

In this series, we are uncovering Satan’s lies, dismantling strongholds, and walking in the freedom of God’s truth.

Satan is a student of your behavior. He watches you closely, identifying your insecurities so he can draw you away from who God created you to be and pressure you to blend into who the world expects you to be.

While he has many tricks, one of his most effective lines of defense is the spirit of comparison.

He uses societal expectations to tell us we must be perfect, curated, and invulnerable.

He’s used this tactic since the beginning, when he convinced Eve she was lacking something God was supposedly withholding.

This is the root of comparison. He didn't tell her she was bad; instead, he exploited her "what-ifs" and "why-nots."

Reflect on this: Who have you been comparing yourself to this week? What lie have you allowed yourself to believe?

If you’ve ever felt like you’re constantly running a race you didn't sign up for—and losing to people you don't even know—this episode was recorded specifically for you!

Identifying Deception in Modern Culture

Before we can tear down the strongholds of comparison, we must understand how we get entangled in them. The world is a playground for the "Father of Lies," and social media is his primary web.

The spirit of comparison makes your "behind-the-scenes" feel inferior to everyone else’s "highlight reel."

When we listen to these lies, we drift into disobedience—and that is exactly where bondage begins.

💡 Pro-Tip: Be Intentional Be mindful of what you consume. What you hear and what you see matters.

Choose God-centered content and ask yourself, "Does this bring glory to God?"

The moment you are exposed to a lie, disengage. If you wait, you give that lie merit, allowing it to take root in your mind.

The enemy is slick; if we don’t act immediately, those seeds grow into sinful patterns.

Biblical Strategies for Overcoming the Spirit of Comparison

When you feel stuck in a lie, remember: it is the truth that sets you free.

We will soon begin a deep dive into the Armor of God, but for now, I encourage you to study Ephesians 6, specifically the Belt of Truth. Truth is the foundation; without it, the rest of the armor falls away.

Where does warfare start? Spiritual warfare starts in the mind.

Satan seeks to control your narrative so he can control your actions. But Jesus is the Truth.

2 Corinthians 10:5 tells us that obedience starts with taking every thought captive.

Using the Sword of the Spirit to Combat Self-Doubt

The Sword of the Spirit: The "Exchange Method"

Comparison is a mental stronghold that whispers that someone else’s blessing is your lack. To fight back, I want to give you a practical tool: The Exchange Method.

When a lie enters your mind, you must immediately exchange it for a specific Scripture.

The Lie: "I’m a failure as a mother."

The Exchange: "God has equipped me for every good work" (2 Timothy 3:17).

I have created a "Scripture Exchange List" to help you get started. You can find it in the show notes and on my social media pages. Print it out, keep it in your purse, or tape it to your bathroom mirror.

As we close, here are some reflective questions.

Awareness is the first step toward change. Ask yourself these two questions this week:

What is the "broken record" lie playing in my head right now?

What specific Scripture directly contradicts that lie?

I hope this episode empowered you! Let’s meet back here next week as we continue our journey.

Be blessed!

The Scripture Exchange List

“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” — John 8:32

The Lie (The Broken Record) | The Truth (The Sword of the Spirit) | The Scripture Exchange

"I am not enough." (I’m failing as a mom, wife, or professional.) | You are fully equipped and chosen by God for the life He gave you. | "His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life..." — 2 Peter 1:3

"I have to be perfect to be loved." (I can’t show my mess or my weakness.) | God’s love is not a reward for your perfection; it is a gift of His grace. | "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." — Romans 5:8

"I am falling behind." (Everyone is more successful/further along than I am.) | God has a specific, "un-copied" timeline for your life. | "For I know the plans I have for you... plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." — Jeremiah 29:11

"My past defines my value." (I am too damaged for God to use me.) | You are a brand-new creation; your old mistakes have no authority over you. | "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" — 2 Corinthians 5:17

"I am all alone in this." (Nobody understands or cares what I'm going through.) | The Creator of the universe is personally invested in your peace. | "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." — 1 Peter 5:7

How to Use This List:

  1. Identify the Trigger: When you feel that "pit in your stomach" while scrolling social media or during a tough conversation, stop.
  2. Say it Out Loud: Don't just think the scripture; speak it. There is power in the spoken Word to shift the atmosphere of your mind.
  3. The "So What?" Factor: Say: "The lie says I'm not enough, but God says I have everything I need. So, I will stop striving and start trusting."

Dr. Wilson’s Tip: Keep this list on your phone's lock screen or tucked into your Bible. When the enemy tries to "study" you, let him find you armed with the Truth!
