What can astrology reveal about the way we love, connect, communicate, and experience relationships?
In this episode, I sit down with astrologer, AstroCartoGraphy practitioner, shamanic healer, and registered nurse Corrie Cooperman to explore the fascinating world of romantic compatibility through astrology.
While many people know their Sun sign, relationship astrology goes much deeper. The birth chart offers a complex picture of how we experience attraction, intimacy, emotional connection, communication, conflict, commitment, and partnership. When two charts come together, astrology can provide another lens for understanding not only where two people naturally connect, but also where differences and challenges may arise.
Corrie brings more than three decades of professional astrological experience to this conversation. Practicing professionally since 1993, she combines technical astrological knowledge with intuition, psychological insight, and a deep understanding of the spiritual dimensions of the birth chart.
Together, we explore how astrology can help us better understand our romantic patterns, recognize what we need from partnership, and approach compatibility with greater awareness.
Rather than reducing relationships to whether two zodiac signs are simply "compatible" or "incompatible," this conversation invites us into something much richer: understanding the unique energetic dynamics between two individuals.
We also explore the deeper purpose relationships can serve in our lives. Sometimes the connections that challenge us most can reveal hidden patterns, unhealed wounds, unmet needs, and parts of ourselves asking to grow.
Because perhaps romantic compatibility isn't simply about finding someone who perfectly matches us.
Perhaps it's also about understanding who we become in relationship with another person.
In this episode, we explore:
• What astrology can reveal about romantic compatibility • Why compatibility involves much more than Sun signs • How birth charts illuminate our relationship patterns • Attraction, intimacy, and emotional connection in astrology • Understanding what we need from a romantic partner • Where harmony and tension can appear between two charts • Communication and conflict within relationships • The difference between attraction and long-term compatibility • How relationships can reveal opportunities for personal growth • Recognizing recurring romantic patterns through the birth chart • The psychological and spiritual dimensions of astrology • Using astrology as a tool for greater self-awareness • Why challenging astrological connections aren't necessarily "bad" • How intuition and technical astrology can work together • Approaching relationships with greater curiosity and understanding

Welcome to Rooted and Wild. Why do some relationships feel effortless while others ask everything of us? In today's episode of Rudin and Wild, we're exploring romantic compatibility through astrology, not as a checklist of signs or easy answers, but as a deeper understanding of how two people meet, challenge, and grow one another. My guest is astrologer Corey Cooperman, whose work in relationship astrology goes back to her earliest days as a practitioner, including years publishing insights on compatibility. Corey approaches relationships with honesty, nuance, and respect for difference. In this conversation, we talk about what astrology can actually reveal about romantic connection, shared values, emotional needs, communication styles, and where differences are meant to stretch us rather than break us. Corey has over 30 years of astrology experience being a full-time astrologer, and she is a good friend of mine. So, Corey, welcome back to Ruddish and Wouse.
SPEAKER_00
Well, hello there, Henry. It's nice to be with you.
SPEAKER_01
So good to be with you as well. Uh we are both based in Sedona, and I just want to kind of highlight for those listening that I've had astrology readings with Corey and it blew my mind and really was very, very remarkable uh to provide insights both for my past, my present, and my future decisions. And so uh Corey, I'm I'm so glad to have you here.
SPEAKER_00
Thank you.
SPEAKER_01
We had a previous episode for those listening where where Corey spoke about Chiron, which is the healer archetype, the wounded healer archetype. And I invite you to check it out today. We're talking about romantic compatibility and using astrology to get um go deeper into learning more about your partner. So, Corey, uh tell us a little bit about your perspective of this as an astrologer.
SPEAKER_00
Very good. Well, you know, it's my favorite subject in astrology, and perhaps that's because um in my own astrology chart, my moon is in my seventh house, and that's the house of committed relationship. And uh the moon is the emotional body in astrology. So it says I have a lot of interest in that subject of relationship, not only personally of being in one. Um uh I've been married, I'm amazed to say, for 40 years, uh uh happily so. And um and it's just it's so uh relationship uh is a very significant piece of all our lives. And astrology has a lot to offer uh in terms of uh learning about yourself and learning about your partner and where there are similarities that are uh fun to take part in and where there might be some differences that um that that astrology can point out and help you manage uh those differences well so that they become assets rather than a source of uh conflict.
SPEAKER_01
So, do you recommend that people do this kind of a reading, you know, before they enter into comedic relationship or during or when they're having a hard time? Or, you know, what when is a good time to do this?
SPEAKER_00
When is a good time? The one time that isn't a good time is like the week before you get married, okay? Because uh because you've got the everything set and you don't want to uh uh hear anything that uh might have you change your mind. Not that most of the time that's not the case, but um, I would say that's the one time. I'd say the times to have a relationship reading could be after you've met somebody and the relationship looks like uh it's starting to be a real possibility of having longevity. That's a nice time to have one so that you learn about each other uh at a deeper level uh than perhaps you even had the opportunity to so far. Yes. And then sometimes people come to me on their anniversary, you know, if they're visiting Sedona for to celebrate their anniversary, and it's a lovely time to kind of connect uh with that um sense of who each person is that you've fallen who the person is that you've fallen in love with.
SPEAKER_01
Now in astrology, there are obviously different different um different signs that are more compatible, you know, than others and different elements, of course, associated with the signs. Uh but I also know that that people break those, they're not rules, you know, per se. They they you know, there are relationships where there's they don't have that natural compatibility, but they still work. Uh when you look at compatibility from the astrology standpoint, you know, what are some things that you've seen that um are common misperceptions?
SPEAKER_00
Yes. Um I think that the sun signs in my uh years of of doing this work and also of knowing many people, you know, and learning what their sun signs are when they're uh married or in relationship of some longevity. Um I don't think the sun signs need to be compatible, even though you know the main book when I was uh uh looking up those things, uh Linda Goodman's Sun sign um relationship book, uh was all based on just the sun sign. And I feel like the sun sign is more what we take to work. It's more if if we if we're doing a business consultation, it's pretty pretty helpful to have those sun signs compatible. But in a romantic um partnership, no. However, the moon sign is what I do feel is extremely uh it's very helpful to have it be compatible.
SPEAKER_01
Okay, okay. And uh, you know, in your experience, what are the some of the most beautiful compatibilities you've seen in terms of uh the different types?
SPEAKER_00
Oh gosh. Well, I could use my own because it was a bit of a shock. When I met my husband, um I didn't he knew more astrology than I did. And and I was uh, you know, a functioning registered nurse working in outpatient physical therapy and and other other forms of healing. Um and anyway, uh it's good perhaps that I didn't know too much then because our our astrology is rather remarkable in terms of compatibility. Uh our moon signs are compatible, meaning they're both in the uh, when I say compatible, it's nice. What compatible in astrology means is being either in the same element. You know, in astrology the 12 signs are fall evenly into the four elements. Uh so there's like three fire, three air, water, you know, etc. Um, and uh it's helpful if you have moon signs in the same element or what is considered a compatible element. And air and fire are compatible, and earth and water are compatible. So uh my husband and I, we have um we we have um every piece of our chart, every piece of our of the solar system is uh in very compatible signs. Um we're fortunate that way. Uh and and it's just unusual to see that level of uh compatibility. But if I see those moons being compatible, I just feel really good. Uh then I feel like it's easier to work out the rest if there's some feature in the chart that's you know speaks of a difference. And that's because the moon is the emotional body. And it says a lot about how we express ourselves emotionally, how trigger happy we are when we uh when some conflict comes up and how we might go through that conflict, and also what are our emotional needs, you know, and so it really that's to me um a significant foundation of a good relationship is uh having that um emotional compatibility. I'm speaking not about astrology, I'm talking about, you know, the ability to um be heard when you're uh uh having to talk about something difficult and being able to make both people make their way through that conversation. Um and a lot of that is supported when you have moon signs that are incompatible signs that are in, I don't want to say incompatible, that are that exist uh in those signs that are compatible.
SPEAKER_01
Let's just uh uh assume for a moment that someone's already in a committed relationship and they get their reading and they're like, wow, my partner and I, or spouse and I are not compatible. Uh that we have different, we have opposing elements and and everything points the wrong direction. What do you do in that situation?
SPEAKER_00
That that's good. Um, first of all, I I have learned over time, and this is just a learning from from doing uh astrology for so many years, and perhaps just also maturing my own self. But I have seen, like I had a couple come to me, it was their anniversary, just a couple months ago. They were visiting Sedona, and there wasn't too much compatibility in their chart. And and it was the most beautiful, profound sense of love that was present between them. It just radiated the whole room, and they were a special treat for me to be with. And I thought, wow, look what I'm looking at, and look at them. And um, and as we went through every uh every one of those quote, different, you know, like like a moon and fire, one person have a moon in a fire element, and the other person have it in a water element. You know, fire and water don't go too well together. Water, you know, fire snuffs out water. And uh um, and they agree, they've had to work through every one of those. And that they say, even occasionally, you know, they the conflict will come up that uh that they have to deal with. They said they met when they were young and the relationship flew apart. And many years went by. Um, and this was uh later, not later in life, they were still, you know, in their just in their late 40s when I saw them, but that it was uh they felt they needed the maturity to deal with the differences, and so it depends on what age I'm speaking to. If I see a lot of differences in the chart, if if they're mature and and and handling themselves well, uh, I know that those differences can be worked with. If people are young uh and have a lot of differences, I think it's hard. And I will talk about that, that there's a lot of differences here, and you'll have to give each other a lot of room to be exactly who you are and to grow to love those differences and appreciate those differences. Okay.
SPEAKER_01
Have you ever had situations where you do a relationship reading and people break up because they're like, this is not gonna work?
SPEAKER_00
Oh boy. Um well, I haven't. But I did have one where they did the woman was referred by her therapist, wrong timing. It was five days before the wedding. And wrong timing. And everything in the chart with her and the man she was going to marry were opposites, like their moons were in opposite signs, sun and opposite. It went on and on Mars, Venus, and um and and and that was a tough one. Um they I I explained it to her in as gentle a way as I could, because the wedding was on and she did get married, and they divorced within 10 months because those opposites made themselves you know very, very present in their lives. Um so uh have I had anybody who's uh got up and said, we're we're we're calling it off after they after no, that hasn't happened. Not that I know of.
SPEAKER_01
Yeah, yeah. Now when we look at at the when we look at astrology as a whole, you know, I'm a behavioral consultant on top of many things. I'm certified in disk assessments and I do disk and you know personality. I have found that with astrology that, you know, although there are nuances that generally speaking, that depending on what your you you are, that there are some common ground personality traits that you will find depending on your sign and you know just the sun and the moon. But um obviously compatibility can be beyond romantic. Compatibility can be in business, partnerships, you know, friendships, um, all kinds of different things. So uh what in your opinion are things that people should, you know, you know, should consider if they're having friction in their relationship, uh, and we'll just make it romantic at the moment, you know, in the romantic of relationships. What what would be something you would advise them to do as it pertains to astrology?
SPEAKER_00
Uh-huh. Well, first have an astrology reading. Um, and in that reading, I would hope that they they would learn they would, of course, share some of the conflict they're having. And as I can only speak to how I would handle that, um, that I would be looking at, let's say they were having a challenge around managing money, which isn't uncommon. And one person might have a lot of fire in their chart. People with a lot of fire in their chart can take risks with money. And sometimes, many times, those risks turn out quite well, and occasionally they don't. But people with fire signs are come not, you know, they know that's part of the possibilities, and they're willing to take risks to get ahead financially. And if the other person has a lot of uh water in their chart or earth, they're more conservative and they're more fearful in a way. I mean, that's a a negative word, but they're more careful, let's put it that way. They do a lot of research, they take their time in making decisions, they're careful about financial management. So if I if that's what's going on and I can look at the charts and see why they might be struggling because they have very different ways of handling finances, um, then that gives them a framework of realizing, oh, you know, it's built into my partner's makeup that taking risks is actually a little exciting and and that and that, you know, having one not work out from time to time is okay. We all make our way through that. And and that for that partner to understand, oh, you know, I really need to provide more data. Uh, if if this is a financial decision, you know, I want my partner to be on board with, I need to provide some research, I need to uh get my, you know, get my thinking or consult with somebody so that I can present a more analytical reason for why I want to do it.
SPEAKER_01
How do timing and transits influence relationships, you know, especially during periods of conflict or major life change?
SPEAKER_00
Right, yeah. Some people, because of transits, will be going through a fabulous time, a lot of success, you know, a lot of expansion. And maybe they're the unfortunate, their partner happens to be going through a phase that in astrology has contributed to that phase of challenges coming up. That's hard in a relationship, you know, for one person to be rising up and the other person to be dealing with uh uh real challenges. Um, again, each of them knowing that it's very helpful to know these are cycles and the cycles complete themselves. Uh most the longest living cycle is one that Pluto would create, and even that is no more than two years. But most cycles are much shorter, you know, in the shorter realm of uh around a year or so. And uh, and to see it as a cycle that has some positive elements to it and to support each other, to be happy for the person who's uh thriving and to be supportive of the person who's got some major uh things to deal with.
SPEAKER_01
Yeah. Now I know that you used to do matchmaking, and uh how did that experience shape the way that you approach relationships today?
SPEAKER_00
Oh boy, does it does, it does, because that was a significant event, me and my husband did together. And uh I was a fledgling astrologer during that time, but it seemed that my abilities accelerated uh during that uh few years while we were doing that. Uh, my husband's a psychiatrist, but uh he, as I mentioned, he's had a long-standing interest in astrology. And we we went in with the premise that the moons are most important, and we put people together first looking at the moons, and then we also didn't want to see Pluto or Saturn sitting over one person's Pluto or Saturn sitting over another person's sun or moon, because that's that's a hard one. And anyway, there was a lot of learning that came forward in seeing what couples made it and some that didn't. And uh, we even have, you know, one couple that got married, even they had children named after us, Corey and Oliver, which is fun to always know about it it the learnings from doing that work and learning that house placement becomes important too. Uh, it's nice if there's some commonality in house placement in the two birth charts of of the couple. Um, there's many ways, you know. I learned that even when people have sun, uh moon signs that are very different, there can be some mitigating circumstances within the birth chart uh that that help abridge that that those differences. The main way it's influenced me is I don't give advice when people learn I'm astrologer, if they want relationship advice until I see their chart and the chart of the other person, because there's such complexity in there that um that I wouldn't want to say something that was inaccurate because I didn't see the full picture.
SPEAKER_01
Absolutely. So good. In your experience, you know, what have been, you know, and I I know that every relationship is beautiful, right? But if you if there were some combos, you're like, these are good combos, you know, what are some of the combos that you've seen?
SPEAKER_00
Um, you know what seems to be really good and uh um is 60 degree angles between 60 just to bring it down to earth, that would mean a sign that's two signs away from you. Um so like a Taurus, two signs. I'm talking now about for friendships. Um, it is nice in this for friendships, the sun signs to have them. It it's it's an added benefit if the sun signs are compatible and two signs away from uh Taurus, you know, going forward and backward. Pisces would be going backward. And and those that 60 degree angle is very uh energizing. It's positive because it means they're in compatible elements. There exist, they are uh they reside in elements that are compatible and uh and a and a bit energizing. So I like the 60-degree angle a lot. Then of course the 120-degree angle that means being four signs away. That would have it be in the very same element.
SPEAKER_01
Got it.
SPEAKER_00
Yeah.
SPEAKER_01
Uh, you know, and these are it's fascinating to me. And I think, you know, some people look at astrology and they go, Oh, yeah, well, you know, I don't know about that, you know. But it's so interesting when you look at it and you observe things because I've had situations where I've had um friendships, for example, that I'm like, like, for example, you and I both both know Mindy. We have a common connection with her. And Mindy is a Pisces. And Mindy and I get along like fabulously. Like I could be with Mindy all the time. We get along really, really, really, really, really well. Because, yes, that 60 degree thing that you're bringing up is completely there.
SPEAKER_00
Yes, I'm glad you you gotten to experience that. And I love Mindy. Uh and uh and I've also a Taurus, so that's right. And I've had other friends who've been Pisces.
SPEAKER_01
Yeah, it's incredible. As we start to wrap up this episode, and you know, for those listening, what are some things you want them to understand and know uh as we as we wrap it up?
SPEAKER_00
That astrology is a very good resource for learning more about your relationship and learning more, uh understanding more how your partner, when they function differently from you, or or or process something differently, why. And and it just to me, it's just so helpful to well, it's helpful to get to understand we're each unique and to appreciate that uniqueness, to to to not only appreciate it, but to value it, to value that uniqueness that astrology can offer through just a personal reading or a relationship reading.
SPEAKER_01
I love that. Well, for those listening, you can learn more about Corey at CoreyCooperman.com. That's C-O-R-R-I-E, Cooperman.com. And we include the link in the description box. Corey, thank you for joining us at Rooted and Wild.
