Hello, hello, welcome. I'm here interviewing one of our amazing alumni clients, Julie, who's going to share more about her experience in the program. So welcome, Julie. You look amazing. Thank you. Thank you so much. So excited to be here. Yes, yes. I'm so excited to chat with you. So to dive right in, the first thing I'd love to hear is where were you before the program? What were you struggling with? How were you feeling? Like what was your reality before you decided to join the program?
SPEAKER_01It's so crazy because I, you know, had uh, you know, living life in my 30s. And then at 39 and a half, I feel like I gained 20 pounds overnight. And I have, and I have gained and lost the same 20 to 30 pounds, like four times over as I get closer to 50. And so it was yet again another time when the weight was high and I was feeling pretty low because you know, I'm just so tired of the diet cycle, you know, the do lean in, do all the stuff, lose it. And then, you know, I are you're falling off the track. I don't know, but then the weight comes back on, and then a couple more pounds just for good measure, like a big kick in the gut, right? So I was feeling again heavy and just sort of frustrated and just feeling like, when was I ever gonna find something that was sustainable, that I could just do this and um kind of just live my life from here on out and stop this sort of yo-yo, you know, where I have five different sizes of clothing in my closet, right? Get down to something and happily give away the clothes that I I hope to never wear again. So that's kind of where I was, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Gotcha. Yeah, in a place where you're like, I'm tired of starting over over and over again. I want something that sticks.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_00Kind of going off of that, like, can you share maybe some of the things you actually tried? Because I think some women watching this might have tried the same things as you. They might be currently trying and realizing, oh, she's right.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01So I mean, I've done everything, and in some ways, some of the backlash in my 40s is because I did some of the like extreme dieting, right? Where you get a shot of B12 and you're on 700 calories a day, and then your hair starts falling out and you can't give blood because you almost pass out. That's a real story. I didn't even think about it. I went to donate blood and almost passed out because I didn't have enough calories in my body. And um, you know, we've all done Weight Watchers over and over and over again, although that program kind of keeps changing. And right now is at a place where too many people are leaning into that easy shot. And um, so I have not tried the shot. I did not, I didn't do the shot, but so many people that are. So I've done, you know, Denny Craig, I've done, you know, you name it. I've done take this pill and it'll electrify your, you know, um, your fat hormone, you know, like, you know, I've sort of done like every little bit, you know, from starvation to, you know, even intermittent fasting. I mean, I've kind of tried and sort of, if you will, failed at pretty much um all of it because it works in the moment. You get a little bit of weight off or you get some success, and then you try to go back to normal life, which is busy. Um, you know, we're all at, you know, we're all good and bad at some things. I'm a terrible, like I don't enjoy cooking, so I don't like to sort of meal prep and all of those things. And um, and then the weight creeps back on, and then again, it's like it adds three and four pounds every time, and it's just like, you know, so yeah. So you name it, I've probably tried it in the last yeah, 20 years.
SPEAKER_00So all the things, all the things. And so I get, and that goes into my next question as to why you might have been hesitant about doing this, because you're like, all these things didn't work. What if this is another failure? So I would love to hear more about what you were first hesitant about before joining the program. Because when we first chatted, when we were texting, you were like, Oh, I think I'm just gonna listen to your podcast. And I was like, Okay, Julie, let's really talk about this. So please share like what was going through your head when you were looking at the program, what you were first hesitant about, what got you off on the edge, all that stuff.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and I I think you have a podcast on um, you know, why you need a coach, right? And you can't sort of just do it on your own, even though you sort of think about it, right? I think I have this collection of I know what does and doesn't work-ish, and I can just do it on my own. So I first want to reflect on the fact that I sort of stumbled across you and I truly feel it was divine that your stuff came over my Facebook feed and then was in my Instagram feed. And because every time it spoke to me and I would stop and, you know, I swear I would joke, my phone knows I'm always on a diet. So I would have all of these things, but for some reason I was drawn to um your video clips, your words, your voice. There was something about it, and I kept coming back to it. But it's a it's an upfront investment, you know, there's there's no doubt about that. But it comes with an enormous amount of things. And when you break it down, you know, when I think about the money I've outlaid on this little thing or that little thing or this membership or that membership, I've spent a hundred times what this program is. And so in some ways, you're like, if I had found this, if I had done this earlier, think about what I would have saved, right? The cost of not doing it, you know, is far outweighs kind of the investment. But it was about that investment because so often I'd spent that little money or a little bit more, and then it hadn't worked and it hadn't stopped, and I didn't see results. And I felt so guilty about that, sort of, you know, guilty, like I'm spending money on something that's not working and I just keep doing it over and over. And so for it to be such an upfront investment, it the fear was, but what if I fail? You know, what if I like what if this too doesn't work and I don't stick and whatever? Um, and so that it did, it took like a lot of sort of prayer and thought and and talking with my my husband, um, who was incredibly supportive of whatever I needed, whatever I felt I needed to be my best me and be happy. Um, but it it was because it it was this is a little bit of a bigger uh price tag than some of the like, but again, you add all those things up, and I've probably spent a hundred times what this program cost.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. So it's not, and I say this to people all the time, it's not the money. It's what if I spend the money and it doesn't work, then I feel like a failure, then I feel like I wasted the money, and it makes you feel to lower self-esteem wise because you're like, well, if I spent all this and it didn't work, right?
SPEAKER_01I I'm just meant to sort of feel like you're, you know, so that that did take some time. But again, there was something I was just so drawn to about your voice, and you were so inspiring and every video, and that I started listening to your podcast, and I was just like, there's something about this that I keep, I'm just so drawn to it. I can't stop thinking about it. And I really need to do this for me. I just need to feel better, I need to feel healthier. And so I'm of course uh so happy that I did it.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, and me too. And that kind of goes into my next question, which is what do you feel like made this different for you? What made it different from all the Jenny Craig and the Weight Watchers and all the things you tried in the past?
SPEAKER_01The fact that it truly is not about what you're not getting, but what you can get and how to get it well. Meaning, and in some ways, I actually was someone I did some of these things and never stuck to it because I guess my brain didn't go, this is working. I had lost weight during COVID when everyone else gained weight. I actually lost weight. Um but I didn't, but it didn't resonate because it didn't stick, right? Some of the tools and the and the mental work didn't stick. And I, you know, I hadn't added that in. But it's things like walking, like 7,000 steps a day is not a like not Herculean. It's not 20,000 steps a day, right? Especially for someone I sit at an office and I work at a computer all day. It's about water, it's about sleep. For years, people have said, Julie, you can't you can't get by on four hours of sleep. Like you need sleep. And and then it was about, you know, portion control, the macros, like it's all about stuff that's sustainable. I can still have a sweet treat, right? I'm planning those things very thoughtfully, right? I can still have that. It's about, is it really worth the calories if I'm eating it? Maybe one bite is all I really need. I don't need to finish it because I'm not telling myself tomorrow I can't have it. Because I could, I wanted to, right? Um, it's about hashtag weight lifting, like build muscle that burns fat, like like duh, right? I mean, it's it's just about stuff that truly is what I was looking for in this stage was stop the gimmicks, stop the fast, you know, quick weight loss, and then it all comes back. Give me something that I can take into my 50s, into my 60s, into the because I cannot do this yo-yo anymore. And that's what made it different, in addition to the mental work and the amazing, amazing coaches, the inspiration of the other ladies in the program when you were maybe just feeling worn down, just being so inspired by this other group of women, um, and the coaches who were there for every silly question, everything you needed, as much as or as little as you needed them or wanted them. And then the thousand tools that you all provide us, right? Whether it's the videos or the you know, worksheets and the mental work, the biggest difference this time than ever, ever before is the emotional eating. I am such an emotional eater. I'm happy I want to have a treat. I'm sad I want to have a treat, right? Like emotional eating. And I will tell you, in the middle of this program, like two weeks into having signed up and invested in myself, right? Things blew up at work like I had never imagined. And in any other time, if I hadn't already been committed, it would have been a time where I would have eaten my way through it and come out 10 pounds heavier. Instead, I lost 10 pounds during that same time window. And in total, I've lost 20 pounds through the program. But um, but it was the emotional, it was dealing with how to get through those moments of wanting to emotionally eat, wanting to sort of soothe through through food, right? Which, you know, dates back to your childhood and all of those kind of things. Doing the mental work to sort of take the pause, take the thought work to kind of go through it, that truly is the biggest thing because other things happen, right? You don't get all the steps in today, or I didn't get all my water in. But stopping sort of that cycle of like, you know, kind of eating the, you know, McDonald's cheeseburger because you had a bad day at work is truly, it's never over. Like it's a process, right? I've only kind of been through, you know, 20 weeks or whatever at this point now, but um, it's such a difference. And I think that's what this program brought was all of the things and then that mental, emotional sort of stability about food, which is the biggest sort of hurdle that we all have to get over, at least that I do.
SPEAKER_00So absolutely, because when you overcome emotional eating, like when you're emotionally eating and not realizing it, that's an extra thousand calories or more that you're having. When you get rid of that, if you're not even doing everything else 100%, you'll still see results because you're not overconsuming every time work is stressful, especially when you have like a stressful job as an executive, right? So love that. And you mentioned a lot of different things, which I love. So, what would you say were your favorite things or favorite thing in the program? If you could pick one or a couple, whatever comes to mind.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I I like the simplicity of some of the rules, right? The simplicity was like 7,000 steps a day, right? To build from it was eight hours, seven to eight hours of sleep. It was the simplicity. It was my coach. I loved her, you know, she was so inspiring and so supportive. And um, so I loved that. And I loved all the tools, even though quite frankly, I wasn't, you know, again, busiest, craziest time of work. I was like, I can't believe I just signed up for this and I'm working 24-7, but here we go. We're gonna do this. Um, but a lot of the tools out there are just so amazing, right? They sort of they're teaching you kind of all of the things that you need to be successful without somebody over, you know, over top of you telling you, don't eat this, but you know, like you're learning the tools. So it was the tools, the simplicity, and the coaches are just incredible.
SPEAKER_00Yes. And I'm so glad you mentioned that because going to my next question, I think some people before joining the program, they're like, and I'll be honest, right? Some people join the program, they're like, okay, you have coaches, but like, are the coaches really as good as you? Like, am I actually gonna have a good experience or am I really gonna have like individualized support? Can I ask questions? So, can you share more about your experience with the coaching component? Because I tell people all the time, when people graduate from the program, they don't even talk about me anymore. They talk about their coach because they love it so much. So I would love to hear from you how your experience with the coaching was. Well, and I felt that too, because again, I was so sort of drawn to you.
SPEAKER_01I was like, there's something about this lady, and then it was like, well, here's your coach. And I was like, I don't know this lady. Like coaching. And so, you know, you get on these calls, which you're with this intimate group of ladies, right? And again, it's I'm also I'm so private. Like, even to do this is so weird for me because I'm so private about my weight loss. You know, like if I gain, I hope people don't notice. And if I lose, I want everyone to notice. But I'm very, I'm very private. So getting on these calls, I was like, I don't know that I'm gonna feel good talking about like my weight, like in front of all, and they're so open and so honest, and you're so inspired by them. And then to talk about the coaches, they take time through every to get to every human on that call to and and the stuff that they remember, right? About all of like your entire journey. I mean, as I went through the initial 12 weeks, it was they remembered from my first call something that I said and sort of were able to, you know, reinforce something or whatever. And then the constant, because you've got apps and you've got all the tools, they're communicating with you every day, right? Kind of, you know, through this, sending you messages, you know, I'm sharing, because again, I'm kind of private, but sharing sort of private photos of my before and after. And, you know, they're just celebrating you. You can ask them questions. We had ladies that got on that like couldn't figure out how to start the Zoom volume. Like, I mean, there were folks that were not sort of tech, um, sort of uh tech uh savvy, and those coaches bent over back, like to the point where they were literally like, I'm calling you on your cell phone right now. Like, let me get to you. So they were incredible. First of all, they're knowledgeable, trained, they know what they're doing, and they carry the same energy that you do into every meeting, every conversation. Um, and they just they get to know you, like they know who you are, they know your celebrations, they remember them even in moments where you don't, right? And um, it was really so even though it was all virtual, it was so personalized, like you felt like these are your people now, right? Like I like want to text them like on the weekend, but I don't, right? But I, you know, I just I love them so much. Like they become sort of part of your your circle. Um, and uh they celebrate with you.
SPEAKER_00And you know, it's so funny, Julie. You said this, because I tell, like, I literally will tell people, my coaches bring the same energy I bring. Like, that's literally verbatim when I tell people when they're like, oh, but I want to work with you. So to hear you say that on your own, I know, and I wouldn't you did not ask me to say it.
SPEAKER_01I promise. I really, those are my words because it's true. They're so like, I mean, they are just so motivating. Like, even on calls where I was like barely on the phone, like, I'm so tired of you know traveling, whatever. They're just so energetic. You I like left with more energy than I came into a call every single time because they're just so full of energy and vigor, and they're just they're incredible. You you you pick some really great ladies to to bring us through this uh this journey.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I take it very seriously because I take you guys seriously. I want you to have an amazing experience. So um you mentioned a lot of really great wins, Julie. But what would you say, like when you think about your experience, what are your biggest wins from the program?
SPEAKER_01Oh gosh, I mean, well, the 20 pounds I've lost in the inches my before and after, which again I, you know, I would say, first of all, um, you're this is not your question, but take the pictures. Because sometimes the scale, you know, I mean, mine is moved every, you know, half inch and, you know, or a half pound, a pound. But man, those pictures speak volumes. I love doing the comparative pictures. But um, so the 20 pounds is certainly uh the biggest thing. Um, but I I think just the the tools that I've walked away with, right? That even when things are busy or I'm traveling or you know, whatever, I know that there are fundamentals I need to focus on. And sleep is my number one. I've got to prioritize sleep, which I didn't do in my 30s, which is probably why my 40s have been so like, oh, you know, um, getting a little older, perimenopausal. Um, um, but I think it's just having those kind of core foundational, I know I need to focus on water and walking and sleep. And then for me, I track my food on, you know, a free kind of app just to kind of keep my calories and macros kind of aligned because you know, it could be different every day. But I just think it's like the fundamental kind of tools that I've left with to sustain me forever. And I also think, again, I can't highlight enough that emotional eating that like I'll never for there was a day where literally I would have like Ubered McDonald's to myself and eaten all the fries and the shake because it was that bad of a day. And instead I was like, I need a walk. I need to go take those steps. And I went and I took myself for a walk, and there was no Uber car drive. And instead, I actually said, you know what I need tonight? I need a veggie burger, I need like some vegetables. Like, that's what I really like. I sent my husband out to get me like something really healthy, and I took a walk. Like, I that is transformation, just like transformational, truly, because that's not my gut instinct. It's like, where's the french fries or the milkshake or the chocolate? And so that is such a huge thing for me to take you know into the future.
SPEAKER_00That like what you just mentioned, that's transformation. We're like, I really made that decision and I feel so good after it. Like, wow, this is a new Julie. Right. So, whoo, so many amazing things. So, congrats to you for all the wins. That's awesome. Now that you are kind of graduated from the program, do you feel confident that you'll be able to continue these lifestyle changes on your own?
SPEAKER_01I I do, and I thought a lot about that, right? I sort of stayed on for a little while. I wanted to kind of get closer to the 20 pounds and get really set up because I've got probably another 10 I'd really like to see come off, and I have every uh plan to do that. I do, and here's why, because the real secret is um the other thing, and I would want anyone to know this. Um, I gave myself a whole lot of grace through the program, meaning, here's what you offer. I there were, I was like, oh, not getting the exercise in because I'm traveling or I don't, whatever, whatever excuse I had in my head, but here's what I am going to focus on and do. And so I was able to make progress even though I wasn't perfect, right? It's not like I was like, oh my gosh, if I don't do this, I'm not. No, I was able to sort of lose weight, lose weight steadily, even though it's not like I was checking every single mark every single week or every single day. So I know that I can because I also know that there are things I haven't yet pulled the real trigger on. And I know once I pull that trigger, like maybe a little meal prep planning might not go amiss. You know, if I could just get myself on a Sunday to like better meal prep, um, I know I could lose even more. So I know I've got runway because I was able to be even so successful not being perfect. And I think it's so important to say that because I don't want anyone else thinking, oh my gosh, but I'm not gonna be perfect. So I'm not, I made progress even without doing every single thing. And I think that's so important. So I know going forward, I've got other levers that I still am gonna pull because I promised my coach when I was leaving, I was like, I'm gonna do this. Like I'm gonna be that person that works out, like you know, uh pumps muscle uh three times a week. Um, and so I'm gonna do those things, and that's gonna help me get that rest of that 10 off and then work to sustain. So I will also say you guys do an amazing job setting you up for how to re-enter time. Like finding out after the first 12 weeks and so many pounds that I was supposed to do like a calorie reset for a week to two weeks. I was like, wait, I get to eat more like right now, like I still have time. I was like, what? And mine fell over Christmas, so that was kind of beautiful. Um, and now I'm gonna do it again and it's gonna fall under uh over my vacation. Um, so I'm very excited about that. But you help us understand how to actually go back into like non-deficit eating to be sustainable. I think that's so critical. Everything else is keep taking this vitamin or the shot or this whatever. And once you stop, forget it. Your body's gonna go, oh, okay, we're done that. Let me gain all the weight back. You all are have taught us how to move forward in that sustainable way. What does normal calories look like? It's not 2,000 more calories, it's it's a few hundred. But here's how that works. So that's the other beautiful thing about this is I I've not only been given the tools to keep losing weight and feel good about that. You gave me once I am there, what do I do to kind of sustain and maintain that for the rest of my life? Of my life. So that's um again, I I can never be grateful enough for all of this.
SPEAKER_00Yes, you said two things I want to like dig into a little bit more. The first is you talked about how we help you learn how to maintain. So many women, when they come and they're from the program, they're like, Hey, do you guys have a maintenance portion where you teach people how to maintain the weight? And like you said, like you got to a point where we were like, hey, we're gonna increase your calories to maintenance so that you have a break and you can eat more calories and you're still gonna maintain weight. And you were like, whoa. You did it. I'm all good. And then you went back into a deficit, and now you know how to get back to maintenance and maintain your goal weight, which no one teaches you how to do. So love that. Yeah. Second thing, I remember like you didn't actually start lifting weights or anything for the for a while. Like you were just walking and focusing on nutrition and lost weight. And I think that's so great because the program has so many resources, and sometimes before you join, you're like, oh, that might feel like overwhelming or a lot, but you didn't have to do everything and still saw results. So briefly, I'd love for you to talk about because I know you have a very busy career, you're a mom, you're a spouse. So kind of talking to how you were able to take the program and choose the resources that you needed with your coach and figure out what worked for you and still seeing results with that. I know that was, but yeah, I think that's no, no, no, no, no, no.
SPEAKER_01I I think it was, you know, I sort of focused every week on like what can I do? And you again, your podcast so inspiring. You talk about habit stacking, right? So you you so I was like, okay, this is a it's a lot, right? There's there's you know, these all these sort of training videos, there's whatever. Again, you know, two weeks in my whole world exploded. I think my first real week, I ended up traveling for work, like it was kind of crazy, right? So I knew I couldn't focus on everything. So I was like, okay, what can I what can I easily do? I can drink water, let me check that off because you know, we all think we drink enough water, but we're not. So let me drink water, let me focus on my sleep, which is actually one of the biggest challenges for me because of my busy schedule. I'm either up late or up early. And so sleep, that was like a big I had to lean in and really force myself to get that seven to eight hours. And let me focus on steps. Like literally, I was like, let me do that. And then the food was okay, I know the calories. Like, let me, I'm not gonna, let me not get overwhelmed with the macros and balancing all of that. Let me just try to focus on calories, let me try to focus on um more protein, you know, because we all need more protein. And so I I sort of started out like, let me just focus on these things. And you know what? I'm gonna add in the weightlifting a little bit later because these are all the things I have room for in my time and my brain and my let me let me try to get these kind of down and then let me add things, right? So it was probably like sleep and water the first week. Then it was like, let me focus on more food. Then it was, you know, and it was kind of refining over the whole time. And even now I'm not consistent with, and I know, again, that's one of my levers. I'm like, I know if I start lifting weights, I'm gonna see even more weight drop. Like, why am I not doing this? But it's a journey, right? It's not a race, it's not a sprint, it's a journey. I feel so proud of where I am, and I know I've got room to kind of keep growing. So it was just that, and then it was just, you know, week over week. And what was amazing is the co you could be honest with your coach, like, this is what I'm focused on. And she was like, that's amazing. This is what you need to do. Like there were days of I'd rather have sleep than exercise. And right now I have to prioritize your body has to be replenished. So they would sort of help you and then give you that one stretch goal for kind of the next, you know, to the next meeting. And so that was really kind of reinforcing that you don't have to go in and be totally perfect to see results. And, you know, I'm very proud to sort of be someone that says, listen, you can invest in this and succeed. And it doesn't have to be that you hit everything, single thing over and over. Um, so anyway, that's that's uh kind of the way I thought about it, and um had amazing success.
SPEAKER_00Yay, I love that. You don't have to be perfect, even with the busy schedule, like kids, all the things. So yeah, my last question for you is what would you say to someone who's interested in joining the program, they're on the fence, they're considering it, but they're not quite sure. Say that that person is me. Knowing your experience, knowing where you are now, what would you say to that person?
SPEAKER_01I would simply say that I definitely was somebody that had just, I mean, did a lot of soul searching. Like, is this the right program, the right investment, the right thing? You know, it kind of it was a little scary at first. And I would say being on the other side, it's and I've I feel like someone else is, I've heard someone else say this in your interviews, and I um, but I feel it too. I I just wish I had done it sooner. Like that's how I like so I I don't regret doing it. I think if you are on the fence, I think all you have to do is listen to like one of your podcasts, Ariya, some of your videos. You know that you are someone who knows what you're talking about. You've got all of this success behind you. You've got these folks that you can put out here. We're real folks. Um, you know, real executive. I'm not, I wish I was, but I'm not. I'm just a mom and an executive who worked too much and who just wanted to feel better in my body and who I was and how I looked in the mirror and on Teams calls that you're on all day long. And um uh I just wish I had done it sooner. So you have to sort of, you know, trust the process. This is the real deal. Like this isn't some hype, whatever you're gonna get thrown a bunch of stuff and then be on your own and be kind of floundering. This is truly this a supportive uh community, right? The other coaches are cheering you on through the apps, etc. And I think the only reg, the only regret I have on the other side of having said yes to this is that I didn't do it sooner and I didn't stumble across this sooner because I could have been in a happier place sooner. And uh saved a lot of money. Say it again and saved a lot of money from a lot of stupid, crazy ideas where my hair's falling out, right? And then, you know, that's you know, you're paying money to, you know, at um uh toppers, right? So um, so that's the only thing, the only regret I have. So I would say believe in it, it works, it's there, and um, you know, you have to commit a little bit, and but it's sustainable commitment and it's doable commitment, and it's not something where you're destroying your body, you're truly feeding it with the best of everything. Um, and you guys are really the experts, and I'm so, so glad that um you all came into my life.
SPEAKER_00So, Julie, I'm like a little bit of an emotional burst if I'm like getting a little scary-eyed, but I appreciate that. And it's just been such a pleasure having you in the program, seeing your progress. And I remember when you first reached out or when you applied for the program and you were like, uh, let me just keep listening to the podcast. And we really talked through it, and I was like, what are you afraid of? Like, if this worked, like if you knew, if you could fast forward to this interview and know you'd be here, would you do it? You're like, yeah. So I was like, what's holding you back? Watch a couple testimonial videos like this, listen to people like you. And you're like, okay, you know what? Let's do it. So um, such a pleasure. I appreciate you. And thank you for sharing your story. Anyone watching this, listen, Julie's not a paid actor. She's a real person. She's a real person. She actually lives in the same city as me, which is actually really funny as well. Um and I appreciate your time. Is there anything else you want to share? Anything else you want to say? Anything we left unsaid?
SPEAKER_01I don't think so. I mean, just my gratitude to you and the coaches. Um, truly, it's it's been life-changing. Like I'm forever different uh because I went through this and I I got to meet all of you. And I just I feel incredibly blessed uh to sort of be at the part uh the part point that I am and and uh know where I'm going in the future. So thank you so much.
SPEAKER_00Awesome. Thank you. Well, awesome, everyone watching. Uh, this was great. And if you decided after this, you know what, I deserve to feel good and I want to move forward, then apply for coaching. Text back if you want to move forward and we'll take it from there. So thank you so much, Julie. Thank you.
