Episode 20 - Power, Restored
What if power isn’t about hitting 100%—but about staying plugged into what gives you energy, confidence, and calm? Teresa opens up about a raw, unforgettable moment of feeling “battery exhausted,” then walks through the simple, steady practices that rebuilt trust with her body and made daily life with histamine intolerance feel possible again.
We explore a clear framework for recharging: meal planning that removes fear and decision fatigue, sleep routines that stabilize histamine and mood, and breath work that acts like a fast charger for the nervous system. You’ll hear why preparation beats perfection, how boundaries become your power-saving mode, and the surprising ways community support strengthens resilience. Along the way, Teresa shares practical scripts, small habit ideas, and compassionate reframes that help you move from survival mode to a more grounded, confident rhythm.
If you’ve been skipping social plans, second-guessing every bite, or waking up already tired, this conversation offers a map back to yourself. Think predictable meals, earlier lights out, longer exhales, and gentle movement on days you feel even a little better. Each small action adds a percent or two to your battery, and over time that becomes the power to live well with histamine intolerance instead of fighting against it. Ready to take a gentle first step? Subscribe, share this with a friend who needs it, and leave a review with one habit you’ll try this week. Your body isn’t broken—it’s asking to recharge.

Hi, welcome to Histamine Health Coach, the podcast for women navigating histamine intolerance and looking for real answers. I'm Teresa Christensen and I know firsthand how overwhelming it can be to deal with food triggers, your environmental sensitivities, and unpredictable symptoms. But you don't have to figure it out alone. Each week I'll share my personal journey and practical strategies to help you break free from fear and take control of your health. So let's get started. Hi, welcome to Histamine Health Coach, where we navigate life with histamine intolerance and find ways to feel our best. I'm Teresa, your histamine health coach, and today we're talking about what it feels like to lose your power and how to gently, confidently get it back. So the other night I was watching a movie and a woman was looking for a charger for her cell phone. Towards the end of the movie, the leading man handed her the phone fully charged and said, You've got your power back. This was a really strong analogy for me, so much so that I immediately made a note of it. There have been a number of times I felt like I'd lost my power, and if you're living with histamine intolerance, the chances are high that you two have lost your power at one point or another. The best way I can describe feeling completely powerless is the time I remember sitting on the edge of the bathtub, tears streaming down my face because my legs were burning and itching after a simple bath. I was exhausted, overwhelmed by the uncertainty of triggers, and worn down from constantly fighting symptoms that never seemed to make sense. It was in that moment I wondered if the pain, itching, and everything else that comes with histamine intolerance would all go away when I went to heaven. This might sound dramatic, but I remember it like it was yesterday. Looking back, I don't think I was really wishing for it all to end. I think I was just so tired. I had lost my power. There are quite a few ways to describe the loss of power. I have a camera that shows the display, battery exhausted, when it's at the end of its charge. If you've ever felt that way, exhausted, drained, defeated, or just done and unsure where to turn, you're not alone. Histamine intolerance can make you feel unplugged from your own life. You stop saying yes to things you love because you're scared of how your body might react. Dinners in restaurants, lunch with friends, simple trips to the mall all become so overwhelming because you're unsure if you're going to have a day that allows for fun with family, or if you're going to experience a day that requires you to stay home, close to bed, or even worse, close to the restroom. You've lost trust in your body, in food, in sleep, even in rest itself. It's a powerless feeling, like your internal battery has run all the way down. But the beautiful thing about power is that it can always be restored and recharged, even with histamine intolerance. Think about your phone for a second. When the battery hits 1%, it doesn't mean the phone is broken, just needs to be plugged in. Your body works the same way. It isn't failing you, it's asking for a recharge, for consistency, for calm, and for care. And that recharge doesn't happen overnight. It happens through small, steady actions that build your energy and confidence again. One of the biggest lessons I've learned in my healing journey is this. Having a plan gives me power. Planning helps me to eat with confidence. It gives me structure and eases the uncertainty. Because when I'm having a powerless day, I reach for comfort in the form of food, food that doesn't serve my body well. However, when I know what's for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, I don't waste energy second-guessing my choices or wondering what might cause a reaction. Having a plan helps me focus on nourishment instead of fear. It reminds me that I can take care of myself, that I can make choices that my body trusts. My sleep routine plays a big part in that too. When I stick to a consistent bedtime and allow myself to truly rest, I wake up more grounded, clear, and confident I can take on the day and tackle whatever comes my way. Sleep recharges me daily. It's one of the simplest ways to rebuild power and stability. If you're concerned about your sleep routine, see episode 16, Rest to Reset. Sleep's critical role in managing histamine intolerance. When I plan my meals and protect my rest, I'm sending my body a message. I've got you. And that's what empowerment really looks like. Not perfection, but preparation. But it doesn't stop at sleep and nutrition. Feeling powerless is related to the whole picture. I'm a firm believer that all five modifiable lifestyle factors need to be lined up for a full charge. Managing stress, relationships, and movement in conjunction with rest and nutrition is the key to living successfully with histamine intolerance. And there are so many simple ways to recharge. Breath work, your fast charger, slowing your breath, especially your exhale, helps calm your nervous system and that calm directly supports histamine balance. Planning meals, your steady current, a constant rhythm to your day, and it keeps your blood sugar stable and reduces stress. Sleep, your nightly recharge. This is where your body repair resets and clears histamine naturally. Protect your boundaries, your power-saving mode. Saying no when your body says no isn't weakness, it's wisdom. And don't forget about community and support, your wireless network. Healing doesn't have to be done alone. When you connect with others who understand, you feel seen, and that connection refuels resilience. And on days when you wake up renewed, take advantage of that feeling and try to move your body. Some simple stretching or slow walk around the block can keep that momentum going. The more you practice these small habits, the longer your charge lasts. Getting your power back isn't about erasing histamine intolerance. It's about learning to live with it from a place of understanding and strength. You may still have limits, but you also have tools, and those tools allow you to move from surviving to living. Every time you plan a nourishing meal, take a deep breath, or protect your sleep, you're reconnecting to life. One simple action at a time. You're recharging with histamine intolerance, not against it. So if you're in that space right now, exhausted, overwhelmed, and wondering where your power went, please know this. It's still there. It never left you. Your body isn't broken. It's simply asking you to slow down, recharge, and reconnect. You don't need to hit 100% to fully live. You just have to stay plugged in to what gives you energy, confidence, and calm. You're not powerless, you're recharging. And that's where healing begins and you get your power back.
