In this episode, I talk about something that was a huge turning point in my own recovery from health anxiety: understanding that you can’t calm the mind without also calming the body.
For years I thought the solution was purely mindset work. I tried to challenge my thoughts, question the worst-case scenarios, and logic my way out of the fear. Sometimes it helped briefly, but the anxiety always came back. What I didn’t realise at the time was that health anxiety isn’t just a thinking problem .. it’s also a nervous system problem.
When your nervous system becomes sensitised, it starts reacting to normal sensations as if they are dangerous. Fearful thoughts trigger stress hormones, which create very real physical sensations in the body. Those sensations then fuel more catastrophic thinking, and before you know it you’re stuck in a loop where the mind and body are constantly reinforcing each other.
In this episode, I explain why so many people get stuck trying to recover. Some people focus only on thought-based approaches like CBT and reframing, while others focus only on body-based practices such as breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, or walking. The reality is that recovery usually requires working with both.
I share how learning to signal safety to my nervous system ... through slow breathing, longer exhales, grounding, gentle movement, and even posture ... helped calm my body’s stress response. At the same time, I had to learn to recognise when my mind was scanning for danger, gently reframe those thoughts, and bring my attention back to the present moment.
Recovery isn’t about eliminating every symptom or never feeling anxious again. It’s about calming the reactive system so that your mind and body stop interpreting normal sensations as threats.
I also talk about the importance of consistency, accountability, and why having support during the recovery process can make such a difference.
