SPEAKER_01

Welcome to Talking Over You with Sarah Sturm and Hannah Sturm. Here we go. If you're gonna be an asshole, be funny. At least be funny. I thought it was a man coon. We need to have like a real athlete on. It makes me consider different careers every time I have to pee in my chamois. Hello. Um welcome to our first and possibly last ever bonus episode, especially when I'm recording alone because I feel a little bit naked without Hannah here. Um we had some really great interviews with um some of the finishers from the pro race. Um, men, women, and unfortunately I missed the non-binary finishers. Um, well, I just didn't see them in the finishing corral. So uh we unfortunately did not get non-binary finishers, but we had some interviews um from the men and women's race. Um, and I just wanted to include those because I think they're kind of fun. And as you know, my sister doesn't really care about any of the normal things um from a bike race, and I love that. And so we got to kind of ask a few, like I mean, some of them are pretty basic interviews. You'll listen. Um, but I do want to just call out because we didn't um I'm so bummed about this, but there had to be just one thing that slipped through from the whole week. Um, the non-binary 100 mile was the first uh non-binary only start, which is really cool. So um Mid-South separated out the pro races from the amateur races uh by a day, which is the first time that I think any major rate gravel race has done that, and it was awesome. Um, and so the pro men went, then the pro women, and then the non-binary. Um, and it was great. It was really a special uh start and finish for the non-binary uh category. Um and so I just wanted to kind of call out the the top three, so the podium finishers, um Robin Cummings, uh Rach McBride, and then Jay. I'm so sorry, Jamie, if I mispronounced your last name, uh Jamie uh Babiak. Um so those are the top three with Robin winning, um, with uh five hours, 31 minutes, and 46 seconds, which honestly is pretty close to some of the honest truly like could have been slotted into the the whole thing, but that's not the point. Uh the point is to give the pro-men, pro-women, and non-binary their own race. Um, and yeah, there's 10 starters, which is really good, and truly like a fairly competitive group, and I really think that that category is just gonna grow, um, which is great. So good job, everyone who raced in the non-binary group. Also, Robin won the non-binary uh category at single speed cyclocross worlds when we hosted here in Durango, and they were wearing their single speed cyclocross Durango Worlds vest mouthful. So good job, Robin. Also, thanks for uh representing single speed cyclocross. Um, Dylan was really stoked on that, especially as he iced his knees, which he definitely didn't do from riding the 100 miles on a fixie. Um, but yeah, I hope you enjoy these interviews. Um yeah, they were really fun. It was really weird to be on the other side and thank God Hannah was behind the camera because she's a much better interviewer than I am. So um yeah, hope you enjoy it. Thanks. I never thought, I never thought I could get you on the podcast. This is a very exclusive, um, a very exclusive interview.

SPEAKER_05

Well, I mean I know why, but it's not you. I know.

unknown

No.

SPEAKER_05

It's your dog, actually. She hurt my dog's feelings one time, and I said, fuck that person.

SPEAKER_01

Awesome. Yeah, our dogs are BFFs. They've just humped each other's faces a bunch.

SPEAKER_05

Well, Wally loves Norm. He does. And then Norm is like really indifferent.

SPEAKER_01

Get this dog out of here. Um, okay, Wally's mom. Yes. Yes, yes. You just won! And you've never done this. You have not, in fact, lost a bike race yet this season. And how does that feel? Especially now that your big shot hubby had to I know. Sorry, sorry, poor Keegan's little pelvis. Yes, yes. But yeah, I'm stoked for you because this is I mean, especially this off-road has kind of stepped it up this year. A hundred percent, like and you're backing it up.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, yeah, and it's all thanks to the support and the infrastructure that they're really building around it. Is there a sound okay? Yeah, yeah, we're good. Um yeah, no, it's been awesome start of the year. I mean, honestly, I do feel the fact that I've been racing for a month and I haven't really trained. So um I was like, oh thank god this one's coming down to a sprint finish. I did try to get away at the river crossing, but I did. Yeah, and I did get a gap, but I just those girls were really motivated, and I just I I weigh a hundred. I'm in the low 120s, like I just cannot put that power down. And I just was it a headwind? It was also headwind, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

She attacked into a headwind, people.

SPEAKER_05

Well, I attacked into the and the climb was no wind, and then you had tail, and then you had cross, and then it was headwind basically all the way home. So, um, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And then they caught you.

SPEAKER_05

And then they caught me right at the single at the fall.

SPEAKER_01

So then G is thinking, great.

SPEAKER_05

G said she had a blast back there.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, she said she could have gotten the popcorn out.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, she was like, oh, it was just, you know, they just hated to see it, and she loved to see it. I loved to see it. Um, but then yeah, Paige made contact going into that like two-track, which used to be a single track, and I was really disappointed we didn't have single track. I know. It's a bummer. Yeah, Bobby, if you want me to come back, please add some single track.

SPEAKER_01

It only touches three and a half minutes. Honestly, it's your brand at this point. Okay, what is my brand? You call them, yeah, yeah. What do you think your brand is? Because I honestly don't know if I can answer it.

SPEAKER_05

I don't think I have a brand.

SPEAKER_01

I think I think you're just really honest.

SPEAKER_05

Well, yeah. But how is that a brand? That's a brand.

SPEAKER_01

She's a brand, baby. She, if you want to know how you look in an outfit, ask my sister. And honestly, ask Sophia.

SPEAKER_05

No, but I know nothing about fashion.

SPEAKER_01

No, I know you don't. I know you don't. My earrings is as fashion forward as I can. Why did you? I thought you were gonna do the knives.

SPEAKER_05

When do the knives come out? That's when I know. Smash it. No, this is their little clouds with rain because we were gonna rain on people's parade today.

SPEAKER_01

Sophia has the biggest balls in both races.

SPEAKER_05

It just hopefully it was somebody else's parade and not our own.

SPEAKER_01

But you never know. We're really gonna backfire. Were you very specific? We like hate earrings, not our parade. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

No, I was looking this morning and was like, oh, which ones are you busting on? I was like, I don't know. I need to. Oh, Keegan asked you which earrings you were gonna wear. Yeah, that is my brand. It's earrings. That's cute. There's your brand. There we go. What do you guys say? Shout out Larissa Loden or something. Shout who's Larissa?

SPEAKER_01

Oh, shout out Larissa Loden. Yes. The artist who does your earrings. Shout out to you. See, I know something about your podcast. Okay, so then la la la, you sprint, yes, and you and G. I just see red, because I'm like standing over the the guardrail, and I was like, red and I think it's red. And I was like, okay, it's Sophia and G, and I don't know in what combination. And then I was like, I'm gonna guess it's Sophia and G, because then G is like this above you.

SPEAKER_05

Yes, yes, yes. Uh yeah, we I was a little stressed because I thought she wasn't moving up fast enough going into the room.

SPEAKER_01

Was she leading you out?

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, she was. Oh. She asked me how confident I was on the sprint, and I said very.

SPEAKER_01

When would you ever say no?

SPEAKER_05

Uh that's a good point. Unless I'm really, really tired. But like I do, I there's something about a finish line that I just start like frothing. You know what I mean? Like you're just like I know what you mean about you. Yeah, you're just you just get your second, your third, your fifth win of the day, like whatever it is. Uh but yeah, it was a little stress coming into the last straight that she wasn't far enough, and then she knows how to corner really well. And then, you know, we kicked it out of the thing, and then I just felt like the other girls were gonna start to come on the giraffe side, and I was on the non-diraff side. Wait, I thought you said giraffe side. No, which was her left. Um so I kicked a little early, and then I just had full face expression of a um, and then yeah, made across the line. I think I kind of deviated a little bit. It was not my intention.

SPEAKER_01

Um just funny because I heard G just go, you need to learn how to hold your line. I do, but it's hard. There's potholes, like it's not a very straight road.

SPEAKER_05

I mean, it's a straight road, but it's like hard. It's really hard. Anyways, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I think G leading you out made a lot more sense than me leading G out for Unbound. And then you guys went one-two.

SPEAKER_05

I know, that's that's unreal, actually.

SPEAKER_01

Which is great. Because that was a really competitive sprint. Like, there were a lot of very fat. I mean, you girls are you're in really good shape really early, and it's really fun to watch.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, yeah. But now I take a little break and then I rebuild for CR Levi's tracker.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. Blah blah blah, bike racing, la la la la la. What do we want to ask Sophia that no one else like I because we're friends first, and now we just happen to have the same job. I want to know, like, what's something that you feel like people don't actually know about you? Because I have my answer to that. That I'm actually a nice person.

SPEAKER_05

I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Um, oh, something um I I don't know. You tell them.

SPEAKER_04

I wanna know, so I want to know like what's your soft spot?

SPEAKER_01

Like, what's the thing that like what's your soft spot? Like, what do you like? I I know how you are because I've been friends with you before this was our job. Yeah. Um, and I think that you know, we have to be different people as bike racers, um, because it's our jobs, and you have always done a really good job of taking that serious. But I know the other side of Sophia that other people don't really get to see. What do you think your soft spot is? Not vulnerable.

SPEAKER_05

No, no, I know, I know. I mean, I do a lot for people, and I don't think that gets like I am and that was what I was gonna say. Yeah, like I will help people.

SPEAKER_01

I hit you're extremely thoughtful.

SPEAKER_05

Yes, yes. To for my people. For my if you're in my circle of friends, I will.

SPEAKER_01

You're kinda like a kitty cat. So, like, you people can't go to you. You have to come to them. And once you're in, you're in, and you're extremely loyal and extremely thoughtful.

SPEAKER_05

Yes. But then once you're out, I will say that's probably my biggest flaw. Strength and weaknesses. Really good at holding grudges. It's actually remarkable. It is.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, that one is, and sometimes it's like nothing that they did, but it's just me and in my internal head, and I'm just, yeah, I that is probably my biggest flaw. I I hold on to grudges.

SPEAKER_01

Well, we don't want to talk about your flaws, but your strength truly is like I want to talk about your flaws. Unless spoken like a true little sister, she wants to talk about our flaws. But I think you're still like uh Danny texted me a picture that you gifted her little strawberry ears. Oh yeah. It you're so thoughtful. Yeah. Like Danny's also a close friend of mine, and I was like, I would have never thought to do that. Like you're and we've been friends for a really, really long time, and you you have been extraordinarily loyal the whole time.

SPEAKER_05

I am that type of person that will like constantly check in with my people. And even though, like you know, I feel like you and I aren't talking as much. Totally. But when we get on the phone call, it's like an hour back, yeah. Right back to where we started, or like same thing with Britney, or like I just, yeah, I I do a lot for the people that are in my circle and I give so much to them that you know I can't just give so much of myself to everybody. I'm very like in my bubble.

SPEAKER_01

Um it's very controlled.

SPEAKER_05

Yes, which is a Sophia way, exactly, measured in a box with straight lines.

SPEAKER_01

Which is crazy because it's like literally it couldn't be the most opposite of me. My I'm like, what's a box?

SPEAKER_05

But every tangle.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I love asking Sophia those. Ooh. Creative outlet. What's your creative outlet? Cut Hannah, you are a good question asker. I am fine.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah. Um you know, it's funny, I always say my sister st stole all the creativity that my mom had available for genetics. Uh, and I got none of that. You know, but like when I really think about stuff and then I come up with like cool marketing activations or things like that, like my brain can get creative. But I'm not like uh artistic, I have shitty handwriting, I can I don't really color. I just um yeah, like it's but what do you like to do?

SPEAKER_01

Like what feels that's creative. It is. Also, you're a really good cook.

unknown

That's creative also.

SPEAKER_05

Yes, no, I do like cooking, although uh Dylan said what's the biggest difference being married. Ever since we got married, Keegan has been in the kitchen like eight times out of ten. And it is amazing.

SPEAKER_01

Does he have a little apron? No, I have an apron. I know you do. And Sophia washes dishes with these big rubber gloves on. It's really funny because it's like the most like his handmake is his band.

SPEAKER_05

True to my roots. But tell people why you do it. No, because my hands otherwise get really, really dry. Maybe I'm not buying enough, like nice enough like dish soap or whatever.

SPEAKER_01

It's a really smart solution. My hand, well, I don't do that many dishes, things don't happen. But if I do, my hands also get dry, and I'm like, couldn't be fucked to put gloves on.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, no, I put Keegan hates him, but I'm like, you cook, I do dishes. If I have gloves, I love doing dishes. Love.

unknown

I know.

SPEAKER_05

It's really smart.

SPEAKER_01

She and she honestly will, because she's really thoughtful. So what is he made that is really awesome, and what is he made that sucked, and then I'll let you go.

SPEAKER_05

No, it's honestly there's nothing bad. He because he knows what I like, you know. Like he knows uh no flavor, as he would say. Well, she is Argentinian. Yes. No, but he will cook really good steak, like really good sweet potatoes, good rice, like make uh I did recently get him off of the bag salad into making real salads because I've always made good salads.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, you're a good salad maker, a good salad tosser. Yes, yes.

SPEAKER_05

Although my eyes were open one time. We had Griffin Easter over for dinner. Oh, he made a salad and he put bananas in the salad. And then they actually weren't bad, and we're like, wow, where did you get this recipe? And he's like, Oh, I didn't get one, I just saw the banana, and I was like, oh, this probably goes nice into the salad. Was it good? Yeah, it honestly wasn't bad. I was impressed.

SPEAKER_01

What kind of dressing goes with banana salad? I can't remember. It was like three years ago, but uh great what strawberry vinaigrette. Yeah, yeah. Okay, well, so you haven't had a sip of your protein. No. Okay, you got a prep. Oh my god, there's so much hair on here. Um, thank you for telling us your greatest flaw. Thank you. Your greatest strength, and for winning this race. Again, you're it's crazy you're undefeated.

SPEAKER_05

That's I don't like that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, you got you got big old red target on your back. And then some sea otter. Yeah. Well, but it's not like you didn't before.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, but you know what? Like, this is the problem of winning so much that it's like people no no, but like people don't give me the freedom to have a bad day. Yeah, totally. It's like like last year at Sea Otter, I got super sick after Epic. I was on the couch for two weeks, could barely ride, and then Haley attacked. I was like, I can't follow that. And then I was like holding on for dear life on Decker's wheel for like 30 miles. And then people were like, She's lost it, yeah. Blah blah blah blah blah. And I'm like, no, I've just been sick. Yeah, you know, so that's that is the hard thing that comes.

SPEAKER_01

You're like uh you're like the Taylor Swift. You've like just been on top for so long that the second you have like a normal human, I don't know if this is like a Taylor thing, because I'm not a big Taylor Swift fan, but like she's just a huge, like she's like, you know, she's like perfect, and like she can't make any errors, and you're a freaking human being. Like you have to travel, you have to do like these races are getting harder and harder to win, and certainly win consistently. So the fact that you keep doing it is sort of like your greatest strength, and also you know, a big like knife's edge, too, because people do hold you to that standard, and you do have to deal with that pressure. Oh, a hundred percent.

SPEAKER_05

And it kind of sucks sometimes.

SPEAKER_01

I'm like, uh, would be nice, but that's well I'll just tell you listen, I've gotten third a lot. You haven't been there yet, and you know the first couple sting, and then you just settle in because you know you're like, well, it's better than fourth.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, yeah, I need to be pregnant. Yes. How many years on my contract do I have? It's coming.

SPEAKER_01

I thank you. I'll let you go because this is not very comfortable. And my ass has gotten a lot bigger, and I know your ass is really skinny and flat right now, so it's gotta hurt.

unknown

Yes.

SPEAKER_05

Thank you for having me.

SPEAKER_01

Me too.

unknown

Thank you.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god, Kobe, I'm here with the winner, winner fucking chicken dinner of the men's race. We just popped over and I saw your little helmet go flying by. And that's honestly all I saw. What happened? Um, you don't have to be like, I know you're overwhelmed.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, at this it's just like tried to be at the front early and like be in the group the whole time.

SPEAKER_01

I was like a little Were you like hiding?

SPEAKER_00

Sort of, not really. I was like marking people and then pulling through. Okay. And like seeing the group was coming, so like just sitting in. Um I definitely hid more than some. Sorry. No, I hid more than some of the others. At the end, I was hiding a lot.

SPEAKER_01

As you should, because you're sort of still like you're like a a gray horse. Like you're not fully dark. You're not dark anymore, my friend. Dang it.

SPEAKER_00

Ruined my chance.

SPEAKER_01

Out there.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So, cause like normally, like, you guys yell at each other, you don't let each other like hide.

SPEAKER_00

They didn't say anything.

SPEAKER_01

Good.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I also had Daxton, so like.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, were you teammating? So did you teammate successfully?

SPEAKER_00

Was this Yeah, we actually like played it a lot better than I was expecting. Um early on, we were just like, it'd be a move, and like Daxton would go, and then I would, and then like he'd come back, and then another person would go and I'd go. Oh my god, nail kit really well and like working together really well.

SPEAKER_01

Awesome.

SPEAKER_00

And then we got it down to a group of six of us in the last like 25 miles.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. Or 30 miles. The current unbound champion.

SPEAKER_00

Current unbound champion. And Michael Garrison, who is insanely good. Yeah. And Pete. And sick. Um Adam Robert.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god.

SPEAKER_00

So it was like all good people.

SPEAKER_01

And um I'm sorry, I'm just like freaking out because like I remember when you were like a tiny baby Devo kid. And now you just won Mitz. Sorry. It feels like he's a man now, people. He's a real man now. How does it feel so you're bar mitzfud?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

You're mid-southfud.

SPEAKER_00

It's mid-southfud. I like that.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, so it came down to six, and then when you guys had the river crossing, like, were you alone through there with the six?

SPEAKER_00

Uh it was the six of us, and I punched it really hard out of that. Okay. And like really tried to make a gap. Um Cam and I were pushing hard off to that the little climb after. Um we didn't make any difference. And I was kind of bummed. I was like, ah, I thought I was like, that's that's a good chance to like at least get it down to two or three of us.

SPEAKER_01

And you really gave her the beans, and then it came back.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Oh, there's go there goes my bike.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, we'll find them. His bike is going by bike.

SPEAKER_00

Photographers got it.

SPEAKER_01

No, your bike, they take care of it. Yeah. And you can just sit here. Great. Okay, so you it came back, and you're getting closer and closer to the finish line.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and I was like, we only have like 15 miles left or 10 miles left.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god.

SPEAKER_00

I don't really want to sprint six people. And then on kind of a nothing little section, um, I was like, I think sitting fifth or sixth wheel.

SPEAKER_01

Uh-huh.

SPEAKER_00

And like kind of not really paying attention. And then I look like look around Adam, and there's a gap with like Cam and Michael. Uh huh. And then Pete was kind of in between. And then Adam's me. Yeah. And I was like, oh, I should probably try and go for that. And then I just like kind of punched around them and like caught up to them, and then and then it was just Three of us.

SPEAKER_01

And then I'm just like, like, were you aware that you were like ha feeling good, or were you just like, I gotta try and get up there?

SPEAKER_00

I could kind of tell. Um but it wasn't like clear. Okay. Um yeah, I still wasn't super confident in the sprint, so I was playing it really coy.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, sprinting against Cam, I imagine, is kind of intimidating. They're both like really good. Okay, so then it's the three of you with a gap.

SPEAKER_00

It's the three of us, and like I was pulling through a little bit, but I'd like skip one or two and then pull through once. And I was like not not doing great as compared to those two. They were definitely stronger, but they didn't say anything because they knew I had Daxton.

SPEAKER_01

They're like, we got this kid with us.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I mean we'll drop him. I think we're all the same age, about 24. Cam's 25. Maybe Michael's 25.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god. Old news, Cam. 25, get out of here.

SPEAKER_00

24.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, you had your bum minutes for last year, Cam. Get out of here.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, so then So then we were just like getting closer and closer to the finish. And then we were on the pavement, and I was like, oh, I think we only have like two miles to go. Um, and then I like, once we kind of crossed that like bridge, and then it was just like the little chicane into this, um, we were playing it all really coy looking at each other. I was really not wanting to lead, and I was like, I gotta be third wheel. Yeah, because that's my only chance. And then we kind of came around the corner, and then like all kind of spread out, like all side by side. Or I was like, oh, it was like a little staggered behind. And then um I started my sprint, and I was like, fuck, I started it way too early.

SPEAKER_01

So you started the sprint, you were like, I gotta be third wheel, and then I'm gonna go to the spring. And then we're gonna start the sprint.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Genius.

SPEAKER_01

It's like a split second, you know? Like you can't really, you just went off of instinct.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I haven't done a lot of sprints. Last year in Steamboat I did a sprint, and that was hard.

SPEAKER_01

So then you're sprinting, and are you passing these guys and they get on your wheel?

SPEAKER_00

I come around them pretty quick, and then I like look back and I could see both of them kind of staggered behind.

SPEAKER_01

You didn't have time to look back, got it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and then I look back again and I could just see Cam. And then like I sit down and I go faster and like get a bigger gap on Cam. And then I was like, oh shit, I think I just won. And then it was there's, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I have goosebumps. I mean, that was a good recap. Wait, so is that all in the finishing straight or like that was all in the finishing straight. Kobe!

SPEAKER_00

We didn't fight for the corner or like anything.

SPEAKER_01

It was just like out fucking sprinted them.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um it's I've lost like so many sprints.

SPEAKER_01

So there's there's hope for me, is what you're Yeah, you got it.

SPEAKER_00

It's just I don't know. I'm curious.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, we should have done this under sad king over there. Dang it. Because you're a happy king.

SPEAKER_00

Happy king.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god, it's totally not hit you yet.

SPEAKER_00

No. I think it will later.

SPEAKER_01

Dude, this is a big race. Like, this is a big fucking deal. I'm so I'm not surprised. I'm I'm actually not. I know you are, but that's like, this is a big deal for you and like your career. Like, yeah. Mid-south is a and it was a really stacked race. Yeah. And this was a proper race, too. Like nothing happened, like you were just the faster boy of all the other boys.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Good job being the fastest boy on all the land.

SPEAKER_00

How's the women's race going?

SPEAKER_01

I don't know. We're gonna watch. Okay, I want to go. So, Kobe, you're from Durango. Like you're Durango kid. Yeah. Born and raised. It's really exciting. And you didn't even like really like you were a mountain bike boy. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I don't ride my mountain bike as much as I wish to.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, well, well, now you're really not gonna ride your mountain bike, I hate to tell you.

SPEAKER_00

Bloodville. First mountain bike race of the year.

SPEAKER_01

Are you in the Grand Prix?

SPEAKER_00

Yep. Grand Prix.

SPEAKER_01

Boy, you're gonna get really marked now. So just go silent.

SPEAKER_00

That's the hope. I'll have a different kit by then, so I should be.

SPEAKER_01

And you're such a nice guy. And it's great to see you win because you're sort of like thank you. You're like the new young blood, young blood in the whole Belladon. I'm so thrilled for you. I mean, it's gonna hit you later, but like, yeah, this is like mini unbound.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it felt I haven't done Unbound yet, but it feels like what I imagine it would be like just twice as long as I think you're gonna excel at Unbound. That's the one I'm most nervous about.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I mean, you can't really be that nervous because so much can happen. But anyway, we wanna I'm celebrating you, and I see you have Cliff family.

SPEAKER_00

So is Pete Pete sort of helping you along?

SPEAKER_01

Yep. Daddy Pete Fresh.

SPEAKER_00

Papa Pete. Yeah, we did. Um, this came in on Wednesday.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god. Yeah, and now you know you're a true privateer gravel athlete if that came in on Wednesday.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Um, okay, any last sentiment, and then you gotta go get, you know, be famous now.

SPEAKER_00

Too many interviews already. I know you guys are used to like not doing any.

SPEAKER_01

I'm sorry I like screamed, but I was like, oh my god, got me one! It's just really exciting. People in Durango are gonna be so pumped.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, thank you.

SPEAKER_01

It's really exciting. It's just fun to see like, yeah, like you're like gravel new gen. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And here we go. It's nice.

SPEAKER_01

Now we're very excited to see the rest of your season. Good luck.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Thank you for doing it. I hope it's just the start.

SPEAKER_01

Wait, do you have one of these little arrow vests? Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Cute. I was nervous about um. Is it like a crop here? It's like just in the back. Oh, it's like holds your little. But once I get my like skin suit, it'll have like the arrow.

SPEAKER_01

My god, Kobe doesn't even have all of his things yet. Truly, that's how you know you're a gravel athlete.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Yeah, bike didn't come in time. Kit didn't come in time. Well, it seems like it doesn't matter.

SPEAKER_01

You're just gonna race it quickly across the line. Dude, I'm so stoked for you. Dylan, anything else I should ask? Oh, uh, I'm not gonna ask you about your setup because I don't care. Good job, dude. Thank you.

SPEAKER_00

Thank you.

SPEAKER_01

Could you just say the word pussy? Pussy. G says. Pussy.

SPEAKER_02

And I can't remember the context. Pussy.

SPEAKER_01

And we're done. And we're done with the problem. Great, great interview. Oh my god, okay, G, I can't pronounce your last name. I just call you Gherkins. My brain. I know I can't pronounce your last name. Say it. Oh we can wait. We can both wait. We need to go to the podium. We'll we'll start again.

SPEAKER_02

It's good for the blood flow.

SPEAKER_01

We're gonna have to put an hour rating on this. Oh no, we are missing Andreas. Yeah, you've been away.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's a long time. Seven weeks almost, but we see each other Monday. Oh, Monday? Mm-hmm. Oh, good. Wait, are you going back to Canada? No, no. Um we both fly to Barcelona.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, sweet. Yeah. Was it nice being back in Gerona? This is what I want to know. Was it nice being back in Girona?

SPEAKER_02

Um, it was nice to be away from it, but it was also really nice to be back and just hang out with a friend. Did it make you miss living there? Um a little bit. I think I actually realized how how many friends I have there. Oh, cool. Yeah, like like normal friends. Yeah, because you normal friends.

SPEAKER_01

Do you move from Girona, which is like I don't know, the biking mecca.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but I'm not a bike, I'm not hanging out with all these uh Barnabies and cyclists.

SPEAKER_01

I have my like my normal kind of people who have normal jobs, yeah, normal things. Well you have yeah, you have a big community there, and then you move to like bum fuck Canada. Yeah, I know.

SPEAKER_04

That's what you do for love.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and Andreas, we do love.

SPEAKER_02

We do love Andreas, so yes. Um, but now he is uh he finished his helicopter. Oh, you do which is catching up, honestly. Yeah, he's done, he's done. Um good for him. So he's gonna f uh he's gonna be with me this season.

SPEAKER_01

Oh good, okay, yay, and he's the best, and I love seeing you guys together. Yeah. Okay, yay, second. Yay, second, my unit. Second is my place. I mean, it's cool that Sophia won. It's too bad that you get both both can't win. No, I know, and we knew that.

SPEAKER_02

And I I was actually, I at one point I thought, like, I was okay. I s I knew she had a better sprint, although I got really close. So maybe we need to change. Quite close. Also, you were quite close to the edge. Yeah, and yeah, I know. And she was she went a little bit off the line, but. And I love that you called her out for it. Yeah, but see, that was fine. I mean uh but I thought like at one point, well, I'm happy to do leadout, and then I just kinda sprint as long as possible, and maybe we get one and two, and so we did.

SPEAKER_01

But yay, that's great. Oh, I know I'm happy. We chatted before, and you were like really a little unsure about your like your fitness going in, and I think that this should feel very good. No, it it does.

SPEAKER_02

And I had a lot of fun, and it was really fun racing this race. Yeah, it seemed fun. Doing the tactics and stayed together. Yes, exactly. And people tried, and I tried, and but never no one really stayed away, and then at one point Sophia was away and I was in a perfect position, and things like that. But it was a good feeling, and I had fun, and that was most important. Hell yeah. But yeah, I figure it out. I think I was a lot of stress lately, and dismissing Andreas and not he, it's like time difference, not able to talk, like no physical contact. So like things.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, I think that that is like a huge, huge part that people, American bike racers, don't really know yet. Like other other disciplines, Americans have to go to Europe and we experience what you're experiencing in Europe. But for gravel, a lot of gravel. I mean, now there's gravel earth and UCI back in Europe, but like you're you have a a lot of American races. I do have a lot of American races, and yes, I think that that really, really plays a role, especially if you have friends and family that you're missing and are a big part of your life. Like, you're with a team and it's a great team. It is, and it's awesome, like it's really cool. I'm like a little bit jealous of like just a big fun team. Although we've made our own big fun team. Um but it's but it's different and it's really hard, and it goes into your like health as an athlete.

SPEAKER_02

It is because it's so important to have also, well, especially your loved one close by, and if you are seven weeks apart, that's really hard. And then especially when you're in different continents and with talking. I said to my parents, well, you know, it's better you visit me somewhere in Europe than that I come to the Netherlands because otherwise you're not gonna see me because I just don't have time to go to the Netherlands. Yeah, so they they come a week in uh May to uh to France where I'm gonna stay. Are you close with them? Yeah, I mean I'm close with my whole family. My sister and I, I'm really close with my sister. We're sending each other like uh long uh voice messages, but little podcasts over.

SPEAKER_01

That's awesome. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So you get you you'll get to go back and you'll get to like be around. At least Andreas. Well, you'll be in Barcelona.

SPEAKER_02

I will be in Girona, and then um for yeah, I'm till Unbound, I'm in Europe. Okay, great. Great.

SPEAKER_01

And you feel like that will recharge? Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure. Yes. Well, honestly, after seeing what you guys did here, I'm really I'm really excited to watch Unbound. A part of me is like a little bit like sad that I'll miss it, but a kind of a big I would almost say a bigger part is kind of like excited to watch the show. No, it's gonna be fun. And it's really nice.

SPEAKER_02

And I I think uh we had a really good time in Spain and you know got to know each other better. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, the team cam seemed wild.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Um, okay, last thing, what what are you most okay? Well, I know the answer to this. I was gonna say, what are you most looking forward to, but I know the answer.

SPEAKER_02

Monday night. Monday nights and in my death shape.

SPEAKER_01

Um okay, wait. What are you gonna miss about America? About this state?

SPEAKER_02

No America. Of America. Anything. The big uh yogurt containers. Oh, those are great. Yes, they are tiny in Europe. Yes, exactly. And it's uh really hard to find like nice, good, Greek, non-fat, high protein yogurt.

SPEAKER_01

You heard it here first. America does one thing well in its yogurt. I know you have to go. I have like I don't know if I need to go with it. No, but my stuff is here and my two. I might need to eat. Yeah, all of our furniture is gone. Um, so I will say thank you. I'm really excited. I we need to do a proper like G on the podcast interview. Oh, yeah. When you're not in a chamois. Because I think you and me. Oh, I know, I know the two of you because that's why I'm draw. I'm drawn to people like you. Well, I have to be with Hannah, but no, I would love to. I would love to. And I'm super nice to you. Oh, it's a good one. And it's a baby for you, and Dylan. I know. Sophie was like, your belly's really big, and I was like, Well, she said, like, oh, she's ready to pop, and I'm like, no, no. I have like uh see my nieces and nephews, I know, then she's not ready to pop yet. Well, you aren't Dutch, so they're just taller. No, they're just taller, they have they have to have bigger bellies for bigger babies. Why? No, because we didn't tell.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's not that the the baby born like a meat and long, they're still the same size. It was not that I was like already this big, and that's me size!

SPEAKER_01

Well, Wayne was just telling us that his kid's like in the 99th percentile.

SPEAKER_04

He's 6'6 and his wife is 6'2.

SPEAKER_01

I know, but how tall are you? I'm 6'1. Oh, a shorty over here.

SPEAKER_02

Yes. Also, Sophia was talking about Oh, uh today I was again like I I'm actually missed uh Michaela at one point. Yeah. And I'm like, damn it, she's dropped. My only tall buddy in this peloton here.

SPEAKER_01

I know, you and Michaela. Yeah, you guys are like a very similar height. Yeah, yeah. Oh sorry, I couldn't be taller.

SPEAKER_02

Like when we were in Rang Show and I actually delivered you to the back of the group. I mean, I sit in your wheel, I'm still pushing over 300 watts.

SPEAKER_01

I know. That's why I told Sophia, I was like, better you and G working together in the sprint than me and G. It was just comical. And we almost got it done. I know. Almost.

SPEAKER_02

One year we're gonna be we're gonna have it. We're gonna do it. Exactly. Alright, thank you so much.

SPEAKER_03

I can't wait to not eat every two hours.

SPEAKER_01

Carboning is the worst part of the sport.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, sometimes it feels good because you get to eat nice things. But that's that to me fades quickly. Yeah, yeah. Um yeah. Okay this morning I was especially as we started at one. Yeah. So we had to have breakfast and then lunch. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And it was like let me introduce who you are, and then I want to ask what you had. Um, Cecile, you are like the new, like, young gun that everyone has their eyes on. Yeah, you're young. Listen, look at who you're sitting next to. But you know, you had a great season last year. You signed with a fancy new team. You look very cool. All that we care about, really. Yeah. Um, and here we are at Mid-South, and you just had a fantastic result. Um, I know you're disappointed. Which is great. I love that you're disappointed. That's yeah, truly, like in years past, you would have been so pumped to have this result.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, that's true.

SPEAKER_01

It's it's funny how perspective changes. Very quickly, like I I would almost say like at the beginning of last year, how would you have felt?

SPEAKER_03

No, I would have been happy, yeah. But I think um it's like the way it happened that's disappointing, not only the results. Sure. Uh so I was Paige and I were working together as teammates all day, which that w was weren't great. We worked pretty much. Which pretty fun. Yeah, it's really fun. Yeah, yeah, cool. And uh Paige was really strong out there, like super strong. And uh yeah, we decided that I was gonna lead her out for the sprint. And uh I started the leadout way too early. Uh and I I don't know what happened. I think I don't know if Paige wasn't on my wheel in the last corner, or I don't know what happened, but was there communication between you and Paige? Like when to go? Uh yeah, we said that uh she should go like I don't know, 200 meters, 150 meters.

SPEAKER_01

Right, but when when you start the leadout, there was no commu you just went off of instance.

SPEAKER_03

I wanted to keep the pace high so that no one would go. Um except in doing that. I started it too early. And then I I mean no one went, so in a sense it worked.

SPEAKER_01

Gotcha. But um So you were leading the whole Peloton of Peter, the whole but hopefully Paige was on my wheel.

SPEAKER_03

I don't know what happened to you. Have you debriefed with her? Not really. It'll help to debrief. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, everything's so this is like the first big big race of the season.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So you guys have a lot more time to practice and it's the first time we actually raced.

SPEAKER_03

But you did some training together. Uh we did some training together. Yeah. And we raced last week together, but um in Valley of Tears, but uh she got in a break like three m three miles in, so we didn't really get to race together.

SPEAKER_01

Did you kind of like just have like an easy day then? Were you just sitting in because your teammate was up ahead?

SPEAKER_03

I sat in for like ten minutes, then I wanted to bridge, so I went off a front. Um, but there were crazy crosswinds. So the group of three in in front, like they were putting time in me.

SPEAKER_01

Gotcha. So that race, honestly, I'm not gonna lie, it like I love what they've done with the event. It looks cool, like the the crit looks fun. Oh, it is the actual race. I haven't seen a single picture that I'm like, ooh, that looks cool. I want to do it.

SPEAKER_03

It is for a park with a bison, it's it's super cool. No, I think it's very suffering really soon. I think if I think uh what would make it better, like no, don't worry, Sophia took you at least took four minutes to get there.

SPEAKER_01

Sophia gave her hot take on mid-south in three minutes. Oh wait, no, I'm talking about how it was. I know, I know, I know. Okay, okay.

SPEAKER_03

But wait, I want to hear the hot take. No, no, the only thing I think the because I l honestly I love a course. There's gravel, there's sand, there's single track, there's paved road, there's wind. It has it all has it all. Um the thing that would make it better for the racers, well the women at least, would be to have more people. Because I was yeah, I rode with other people for 30 30 minutes. Well, and it was my choice. I I did that to myself, so I I can't blame the organizers or other people for not showing up for that.

SPEAKER_01

But we heard it, ladies. Cecile wants you there at Valley of Tears next year. But yeah, I agree. More women does make the bike racing.

SPEAKER_03

No, I I it's honestly the race was super fun and it's pretty.

SPEAKER_01

Um I want to hear, so you had a big change in your whole season, and I kind of got sorry, your whole team setup and race setup for this year in comparison to last year. And I got like sort of a front row seat while that was occurring in your career. Yeah, and it's really exciting to watch you go from your pretzel sticks in your ripped jersey and following this like fast girl with like an old road kit on, and you're on Trek Trifless with a matching helmet. Yeah, cool, isn't it? That's cool in a matching bike and a really cool one. How does it feel? You don't have to like, and then I want you to go home and get out of your chamois, but like how does that just kind of stay like this all day? How does that feel?

SPEAKER_03

Uh yeah, it's great. I really like the whole team setup. Um there are just so many things that I don't have to think of. Yeah. And that I don't have to do, so it's more time spent lying down or or eating. Do you think that that's a big part of you know your success so far? Uh yeah, I'd say so. Yeah. Um, I mean it's less organization, less energy spent, so more energy allocated to the things that matter. And that feels really good for you. Oh, yeah, yeah, it does. Yeah. Yeah, no, I had a lot of how. Yeah. I was like, But you were organized, I was organizing everything.

SPEAKER_01

So, yeah. Okay, one last question for you. What race are you excited for uh this season the most? Uh I think unbound. All right. You should be. I'm excited to see you race unbound. Yeah, I'm excited to see. Are you actually no, sorry, the biggest question are you gonna bring pretzels? No, absolutely not. I'll just say, my sister doesn't know. Cecile dragged these poor pretzel sticks for 200 miles. All of us were watching them in her back pocket just. I had one.

SPEAKER_03

And it stayed in my mouth for like five minutes. The worst decision ever. You know how they say don't do anything in a race that you haven't done in training? You did it. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And then you just carried. At least they were light. Yeah, no, that's true. I just will always remember you. And all of us stared at some point during that race at the damn pretzel sticks.

SPEAKER_03

And it's so I think every arrow engineer would be like shaking.

SPEAKER_01

But don't worry, you look so arrow now. Okay, good. That's all that matters. Oh I care about. Um, I'm so I'm so excited to see your season race. Thanks. Yeah, and send me baby names, because we have none. Well, we have some, but when do you think of them?

SPEAKER_03

I've heard I heard people say that you don't realize how many people you hate until you start trying to find babies. Right, you're like, oh, I love that baby. And and I thought, yeah, okay, like that name, but I know like three people who so good luck with that. Well, yeah, thanks. Someone actually said they were gonna name their baby Cecile.

SPEAKER_01

I love the name Cecile.

SPEAKER_03

Because no one has it, so you can't hate the name button.

SPEAKER_01

Maybe we put Cecile on the list.

SPEAKER_03

Do you know if it's okay?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Okay, cool. Good job. Yeah, thank you. I'm excited for you.

SPEAKER_03

I'm excited for you!

SPEAKER_01

Thanks for you.
