Talking Over You
Hannah and Sarah Sturm grew up in the same household, live in neighboring towns, and hang out all the time. But in one respect, they couldn’t be more different: Sarah is a professional cyclist while Hannah has spent most of her life successfully avoiding bikes at all costs. They both know that Sarah has a weird job, and Hannah isn’t afraid to ask the sorts of questions that most people in the bike world would be too embarrassed to ask. Why is there a Queen Stage but not a King Stage? How old is gravel racing? Does everyone pee in their chamois? And most importantly, why on earth would anyone choose this as a job? Join the Sturm sisters every week to hear them laugh about their vastly different careers, argue about their shared memories, and drop unfiltered takes on just about everything.

They have a lot to catch up on, but first, they get sidetracked by which Enneagram personality they are. Later, they talk about the possible drama in the women’s race at The Hills, and Sarah reveals a breakthrough she had while hanging onto the wheels of her friends’ training ride last week. Plus, Hannah has another nail and hair update, and they talk about the new pregnancy contract for Life Time Grand Prix riders.

Welcome to Talking Over You with Sarah Sturm and Hannah Sturm. Here we go. If you're gonna be an asshole, be funny. At least be funny. I thought it was a man coon. We need to have like a real athlete on here. It makes me consider different careers every time I have to pee in my chamois. Okay, I'm just gonna get. Are you gonna wear your hat like that? Maybe. I just wanted to say favorite daughter. Where did that possibly come from? It couldn't have been one of our parents. It's for sure. Uh mom and dad both gifted it to our friend Kayla. And not checked. It is a great brand called Favorite Daughter. And along with Tiny Big Sister, both of which I resume with. What do I get? Little asshole. Oh my god. Um, okay, I'm gonna just jump in with our sponsors so we can get into it. Uh thank you, Specialized, for sponsoring this episode and being one of my longest sponsors um for my athletic career. Uh, starting with like our semi-pro mountain bike team that I was on with Payson way back and SEP, way back in the day. Um, shout out. But yeah, they're sponsoring this episode. And I it's hard to talk about them in some ways because they're just so ingrained with my life. Like I've been extremely lucky and spoiled, if you will, to get to ride all of their amazing bikes and watch, you know, the technology evolve in the sport of gravel and started with basically on a cross bike, and now we have, you know, multiple choices of gravel bikes in, you know, the gravel scene. Um, but yeah, I I think it goes without saying specialize is one of the most well-known bike brands in the world. Um and they sponsor all sorts of athletes and make all sorts of different bicycles. Um, I've mostly been enjoying my Diverge, uh, which is um the gravel bike, one of their gravel bikes. There's a crux in that the diverge. Um, and actually this weekend I was like, do I get a Creo, which is their e-bike, um their gravel e-bike. Um just so I can like keep up with the gravel girls. Because if we're on flats, it's good, but then on the hills, I really, I really feel the 25 extra pounds I have. And babies holding you back. Um, I have a whole new respect for guys that ride around with like big beer bellies or big pot bellies. Like, you know, you see the older dudes with the pot bellies. And honestly, like, shout out to those guys because it is a like your knees have to go to the side. I was gonna say, I feel like you just it changes your whole stride. It really does. Like, sh wearing a chamois is very different. Like, bibs are kind of out. So, like, guys with pot bellies, call in. What are you wearing? Wait.
SPEAKER_02No, actually, nope, keep going. Keep going.
SPEAKER_00Did you want to say anything else about specialized before I start starting about penises?
SPEAKER_01Um, I I guess I could talk about some of the equipment that I've been using. Um, I mean, they just have so much. Like, I've been in their shoes, on their saddles, on their tires, their frames, like every the cockpit, everything that you could probably the cockpit is like um everything that you use to steer with, you know, like your bars, yeah. Yeah, bars and stem. Everything you need to be the pilot of your own bike. Yeah, the pilot of your bike. Um, but yeah, I've I it's oh, actually, okay, sorry, last thing about specialized. This is like the most unhinged ad. But it's so authentic. Um authentico. Dylan was setting up uh his bike with uh some of my tires, and he put um some Tracer 40s, which are I used to mainly race when I started gravel, 30 and 35 mil tires, which are pretty thin, but like thicker than I was used to on a uh cross bike. Now anything under a 50, I mean it's handy, it's like this big, like I don't know how many you could measure out millimeters, but like it's like the difference between like a road bike and a mountain bike tire is what I'm riding. And Dylan put 40s on his bike, and it looked like he had like a little baby road bike, and it's crazy to think that like we all used to be running like smaller than that, but they've really like grown with um the technology, and they've you know figured out how to perfect so much of this and given us amazing equipment to ride. So I've been last year I raced almost exclusively the 50 tracer front. Actually, I would do the 50 tracer in the front and the 50 Pathfinder in the rear. Um, and that was a great combo for most of my gravel races. Yeah. Thank you, specialize. Um, okay, wow. Big week. Okay, wow. Yeah. We are coming to I'm I'm in Denver.
SPEAKER_02Friends with my best friends. I have this group of best friends that I've had since it's we were thinking it's been over 20 years. Yeah, that's crazy. Um that we've like together been friends, but like, you know, I've known Geordie since we went to preschool together, and uh, yeah, we uh we all live in different places now, but this is our like we have one trip a year that like we make it a point to get together once a year and spend a weekend together, and we didn't get to do it. Last year was the first year that we fucked up and didn't do it. Um, so it feels just really, really good to get all together.
SPEAKER_01But holy shit. It is um it's so obvious that we have known each other for our entire lives. Like this morning we went to breakfast.
SPEAKER_02We've just been like eating delicious food and like just relaxed, went to hot springs and got our toes done. And like it's we just we just need to be all together so that we can talk. It doesn't matter what we're doing. But this morning we were at breakfast and uh Jordy and I were splitting like a a dish and she was like putting part of hers in a bowl, and I was like, Jordi, you're taking all of the passion fruit.
SPEAKER_00Like you're you haven't left any passion fruit for me. And she was like, I didn't even get any, I don't even know what you're talking about. Like we were just like bickering so much like siblings, and then like you know, got our food so sweet, and then we like you know finished eating, and I was like, Whoa, sorry, I was like kind of hangry, but like I was also really excited about the passion fruit.
SPEAKER_01But there's so many things for him, like we are so I hope they call you out on that shit. Of course they do, of course they call me out on it.
SPEAKER_02We call each other out on everything, yeah. No, I mean that's it's yeah, it's beyond like it.
SPEAKER_01Just is I feel really fucking grateful. Um, it's so unique and so special to like have really close friends and have those close girlfriends specifically as a woman, and then have had them for a really long time is so unique. Like, I I stay in touch with a lot of my friends, but I don't I mean, I can't remember the last time that we were all in the same place, like all my friends live all over the country, which is annoying. Yeah, um, but I'm so glad that's a whole different I mean mom really has set that precedent too, with you know, she still sees her friends from high school and they're in their mid-70s now. Yeah, I mean it just is crazy.
SPEAKER_02There is something different about like you know, having friends like that you've made as an adult, but like the friends that you have known and seen through every phase of our lives, like we've seen each other through every single thing. Like there's um yeah, there's a whole different level of and and it's not that it's just always been like super easy and and like floaty because like we have really hard conversations and like you know are really honest with each other, and but like there's so much respect, it just and we just laugh our fucking asses off.
SPEAKER_00Like uh we were getting pedicures yesterday, and Jordy opted for like the supreme or whatever, and so she got like a paraffin wax, but they have these like bags, these like plastic bags that they have like wax in. Um, and then they like put your foot in the thing and like and like push the wax all around. Um, but the wax was like kind of this like or orange ish, like orangeish color, orangey pinky color. And Olivia just like was looking at her her feet all wrapped up, and she said something about like um like one pound of salmon coming right up, like bag it up and send it out and it just looks so fucking funny. We just we just howl like the whole weekend.
SPEAKER_01We just it's yeah, so needless to say, it's been incredible. We've also eaten incredible food. Yeah, and then you guys said donut holes, and I was like, I'll take one. Well, that actually with our fucking soda stream. Oh, the soda stream again. What I love that he chooses um when we're recording to do that. Exclusively. Um You haven't commented on my bangs. They are so cute. They look very like in the best. Actually, I'm not gonna say it because you're gonna take it as a not a compliment. I would like to hear what you have to say. What do you think I'm gonna say? Baby bangs? No. What were you gonna say? Who do you look like? I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Actually, I need to look up a picture of it before because Well, so I like, you know, last week I went and got my hair cut. Um, and then I got home and I was like, uh, like I she had only cut these.
SPEAKER_01I think they're not what they look like.
SPEAKER_02They like, oh good.
SPEAKER_00Well, tell me what it is so that I can I was gonna say bra.
SPEAKER_01I was gonna say raggedy Ann, but it's a little that was more unhinged. I know, I just thought that like she had like ringlets. No, but now I see that she's straight hair. Thank you so much though. Okay, I didn't mean it as like a not a nice thing.
SPEAKER_00Well, anyway, I went and like she cut like just a like to be like face framing, but like my hair like sprung up a lot more than she thought, so I had to go back to get it like redone um and add more bangs.
SPEAKER_02And it's really funny because like can you let me know when you're in Durango?
SPEAKER_01You were gone. I know. I needed someone to come by the house and put our packages in.
SPEAKER_02Oh shit, sorry. Well, it was before work, I had it was an hour, you know. Anyway, blah blah blah. Um, but it was funny because I told like Jeff was like, I just don't, I think, like I just don't like how bangs look, which is crazy that he has an opinion about aesthetics in general, given his style.
SPEAKER_01Specifically, because they look really specifically. Well, and then uh so I was like, you know, oh okay, I probably won't get but I compromised and I got bangs. Um so I compromised and I didn't listen. I compromised and I said as you shouldn't be gonna do my own thing.
SPEAKER_00Well, of course, I wasn't gonna not get it because he well, and then he clarified after I had bangs and I was like, hey, I uh got bangs. Um here's a notice. I like those. No, well, yeah, probably not, but he I was he just and then he was like, Well, let me show you a picture of the bangs that I don't like. He pulled up Dumb and Dumber. Um my god.
SPEAKER_01Which honestly, those are like baby bangs. That's what Bill of Dylan has to do with baby bangs. I did too anyway. Yeah. So that's all I have to say. Okay. God, I feel like I had a couple of good things, but that's okay. Okay, I feel like I had so much. We went, we went to we haven't been to Albuquerque in a minute, so we decided in the middle of a heat wave to go down there. So it was like 91 on one of the days, and it was a preview of what I feel like my life is gonna be like this summer. I had to take all my rings off. My feet were so swollen. I looked like, you know, that movie, is it Wally? Um Pixar feet. Yeah, Pixar feet. That's a joint. I wanted a salmon bag as long as they were ice cold. But we went, oh my god, we just shopped our little faces off. We just did a lot of errands that like the best thing that you got. Honestly, going to Costco was so fun. What did you get? A hot dog. Actually, Doran got one, but it was definitely for me because I was like, Oh, you know what I'm saying. I did so that picture, and he looked like he was just so full of joy.
SPEAKER_00Mom and I were both taking pictures of him.
SPEAKER_01I got a pair of pants. I totally forgot about until just now. You got pants? Is that what you said? Mm-hmm. Yeah, from Costco. Yeah, I know. And I'm like really eating my words. Truly, because I used to make fun of dad for only shopping at Costco for his clothes, but they have a great selection. Truly, I am Costco sponsored this podcast. Okay, I really honestly though appreciate the establishment because the owner has said as long as he is living, the hot dog will own will always cost a dollar fifty.
SPEAKER_03Ugh.
SPEAKER_01And blessed, I mean, I mean, in this economy, I will buy four gallons of lotion to make up for the whatever margins you're losing on your hot dog. I now have like Barbara, mom, our Aunt Barbara, and mom and dad are all like, well, I can put you on my membership. And Barbara was like, I not to brag, but I'm uh I'm like, what did she say? No, she was like, Oh, at the executive level. She was like, I can get you on. She's like, I'm essentially a Costco docent.
SPEAKER_02Which is funny because Costco is definitely not for people like Barbara who are just like, well, actually, it very much so is, but like, you know.
SPEAKER_00What? Yeah, it is. She lives alone. Well, it's like for big families.
SPEAKER_02I always thought it was for like massive families, but like, no, it's not for everyone.
SPEAKER_01No, it's for everyone for the people. Yep. I mean, like to buy anyone needs a 10-pound apple pot. Truly, they're like baked goods section. I got so many grapes, which wrecked me. Ugh, it was delightful. And then we walked into the and then we walked out of Costco into hell that was a 91 degree day and a 150-degree car, and it just brought me back to those memories of going to Costco as a family in the summer, and it was like so fucking hot and getting into a hot car. I just like cannot not complain. It's just so hot. You can't, yeah. No. Uh oh. And pregnant.
SPEAKER_02Watch, it's gonna be like the hottest summer on record.
SPEAKER_01Actually, they are predicting hopefully whatever the rainy one is. The we're in uh La Nina. Oh. Or we're in whatever, I can't remember which one is which, but we're gonna have maybe it's leaning more towards like rainy, wet June and July, which I'm like, please. So anyway, um, we did that and then we went mattress shopping because we live at listen, we live in a mountain town. You don't get these these pleasures of like trying things, like, oh my god, going to a store and just trying on sizes and not having to like work like buy multiple sizes and then send one back. Yeah. So fucking nice. Anyway, um what size mattress did you get? Did you try? Well, we went to this store called Purple, like the purple mattress. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Well, so now I'm like rethinking the whole, like the chili pad showed up, and now I'm rethinking the whole strategy because if we get a purple, I'm not spending six thousand dollars on a sleep setup. Is that how much the bed costs? Well, the bed is three, yeah-ish, and the chili pad was Yeah. Wow, okay. Anyway, I don't need to talk about that on the pod. But I mean, sleep is important, but here we are. But here we are. Okay. Um, and then I'm just trying to think if anything else. I went for a bike ride with dad, which was nice. Oh, Norman. Norman. I hear Norman.
SPEAKER_02Dad and Norman. I I saw your picture, his little baggage and jersey.
SPEAKER_01Aww. Maybe hook him up with a tighter jersey. I I've tried. He does he can't do the Rafa because he's it's too tight for him. He doesn't like it tight. And I I was like, okay, well, they don't have a club fit. Sorry, I don't know what to tell you. I love the the club fit. His baggies. But I yeah, we were like riding past my old high school, Albuquerque High, and I was like, shut up. I was like, man, there's gotta be someone in there that has an 18-year-old now who's graduating from high school, and then later that day I met one of my old or I saw one of my old classmates again, and lo and behold, she has a sophomore in high school. So she really was a lot more on it than I was with the kid having I am late to the game. Yeah, whoopsie. Um, but yeah, that's what I have to report from. I mean, it was really good to see family. It's just I'm I'm a really nostalgic person. So like ever we went to the mall. Hot dog and a stick is still there. They still have. But do you remember when we were kids, the people that would serve the hot dogs would stand like they were and they had the hats and the tight tops, but then they were like on a platform. They were like, anyway, they're I don't remember, but Orange Julius is no longer, but Hot Topic is still going strong, as is Claire's.
SPEAKER_02It's crazy that hot dog on a stick doesn't or is still around on the city. Um but orange julius is not.
SPEAKER_00I know.
SPEAKER_02I guess they kind of pigeonholed them. Like well, no.
SPEAKER_00I got rid of it.
SPEAKER_01Kiva juice. I guess people really do like corn dogs. I'm not, I don't know if I'm a corndog girl. Oh, what? That's crazy. I know. I know that's crazy. It seems like you would be with those bangs. You could get down on a hundred. Those are corndog bangs. Those are carney bangs.
SPEAKER_00They are really short.
SPEAKER_01They're actually I just have really curly hair. It goes down to like almost the tip of my nose. Anyway. Anyway. Um, have we talked about Enneagrams on the pod yet? Uh, I don't know. Why do we have a lot to say about Enneagrams today? Well, I got a funny text from Ellen. Okay, so I'll just like tell pe for those who don't know, if you're not into like horoscopes or like it's like a personality test for those people who aren't into horoscopes. That's like my best way of describing what the Enneagram thing is. You don't think it's for people who like doing horoscopes? No, I feel like you're either a horoscope person or an Enneagram person. Like either astrology or astronomy? Stars. Astrology. Astrology. I actually think enneograms are like rooted in like the Bible. However. Enneograms? Yes. Because if you go to Why are you so confused? Oh, I'm just trying to understand. I'm sorry, I'm interested. This is my interested face. Well, change it because you look like you're upset and confused.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_01So anyway, um, it there it's like a personality test. And the way that Dylan we learned about it through our couples therapist like five years ago, and he had us like read through there's nine personality types, and you basically like you can read through the descriptions of each and figure out what you are, or most people can, and that's basically what Dylan and I did. And it was truly a very interesting thing. But there are tests that you can take, like you can't question all the time. I just like think those are so stupid, and they waste your time, and then usually at the end you have to pay, so like you have to search for free Enneagram. It's just like they're really time consuming, and people but people love a test, so you can go, you can find a test if you want, but you can also go to the Enneagram Institute.com and you can read each type. So we did that with like mom and Mike and Dylan. And it was really I mean, Dylan and I have both known, but I like kind of go back and forth like am I a three the achiever or a seven the enthusiast? Both of which are super annoying. You can aren't there like wings and stuff, like what's what's up with the wang? There's like I don't know. Like in times of stress, you can be this, like you sh show up as this type, and it can it can get really you can get really into it. I should have Ellen on to talk about it because she when I put her on my team, I made her take or I made her figure out which Enneagram she she was because it was so helpful with Dylan. And I'm like, Ellen and I are gonna be spending a lot of time together, like we need to understand these different things about each other, and um, I don't know why I didn't put it together then, but this was in 2022, three, and she is uh the loyalist, and I'm 99% sure that's what you are. That sounds right. I don't know anything about it, but that sounds right. See, I'm literally talking about my friends that I've been friends with for 25 years, and I'm like, Yeah, well, that's what Grady's also a loyalist. Sorry, Grady, not to out you, but uh oh, is that a bad thing? Is it bad to be a loyalist? No, I'm just gonna read it to you. Yeah, I want to hear it. Um so you're the Enneagram six. Uh motivated by the same. That's my number. You're motivated by uh a deep need for security, safety, and support. They are dependable, hardworking, community. Driven individuals who excel at anticipating potential risks and solving problems. Loyalists are deeply committed to the people and organizations or causes they trust. Your core desire is to feel secure and supported. Your core fear is being without support or guidance and being abandoned. Strengths, loyal, responsible, reliable, excellent at anticipating problems. Weakness, prone to anxiety, overthinking, skepticism, defensive reactivity. I could go on. About the about the cons. No, I mean there's a lot with like decision making, uh growth and development. I mean, there's a lot more things. And then you can look at at your like compatible compatibility with like it's not like, oh, if you're with a four, then you're not comp it's just like showing the interaction. And then I guess for sake of the podcast, I will read Yeah, I want to hear what yours are. Well, see, I uh I think a lot of athletes are achiever enneagrams. I'll I'll read that one. So I what number is that? I think it's the three. Yes. Uh achiever. I think probably a lot of people on this podcast are maybe type three, the achiever um or the performer. I'm I'd be so curious to know if there's like a commonality in like what our lips are. If you know what any area, what their Enneagram number they are. And sorry if you're not. Some of them are sixes. You can turn us off. Um, okay, Enneagram three. See, I yeah, anyway, the achiever or performer, success-oriented, adaptable, image-conscious personality type, driven by a need to feel valuable and worthy. They're highly energetic, competent, ambitious, often excelling in their careers, but struggle with workaholism, um, authenticity, and fear of failure. So they struggle with authenticity. Um core motivations, core motivations to be admired, to succeed, to experience admiration, and to distinguish themselves. Core fear is to uh being unlovable, worthless, or failing. Key traits, charming, productive, adapt not so productive, uh adaptable, self-assured. They are often chameleons who can adjust their persona to fit uh fit in and win. Um and then your core vice is they may deceive themselves and others about their true feelings or capabilities to maintain a polished image of success. So that's interesting. So I was like, ah, I could be an achiever, and then we read Enthusiast again. Um and it's really funny to do this in a group of people because I think the like true way of the Enneagram, you're not really supposed to guess what other people are, because then you could be like, you're an eight, and then people go and read all the like shitty things about an eight, and they're like, I'm not an eight. I love that you're like, you're a six, um, and I'm telling you that you are. I just got this. I think I write. I told I know, I know I'm right. Okay, okay. Because I got a funny text from Ellen, who's Ellen is really into the N-Ear. She got really into it, and it's cool. Like she got a whole book on it, and um, yeah. Anyway, so we talk about it a lot. So Sevens are the enthusiast, extroverted, optimistic, versatile, spontaneous, playful, high-spirited, and practical. They can also misapply many of their talents, becoming overextended, scattered, and undisciplined. They constantly seek new and exciting experiences, but become can become distracted, exhausted by staying on the go. They typically have uh problems with impatience and impulsiveness. At their best, they focus on their talents. Um, they're they focus their talents on worthwhile goals, becoming appreciative, joyous, and satisfied. And I would say At their worst. At their worst, basic fear. Being deprived and in pain, basic desire to be satisfied and content, having their needs fulfilled. Um, sorry, this doesn't give the same synopsis as the other ones, which is very annoying. Um at their best, yeah, it just has but you can kind of I mean it said like scattered. Oh yeah. Okay, that's true. Oh, and then it like says all these people that are also like Robin Williams, Jim Carrey, Mike Myers. Robin Williams, Lucky, yeah, Paris Hilton, Howard Stern. Great, Galileo. Galileo. Thank God. And mom in Benjamin Franklin. Oh, few, Sarah Palin. Well, we were very strong. And then I mean, I'll tell you off offline what I think mom was because I thought she was a seven, and then well, we get to talk to her soon. Yeah. So we can talk about it then. Well, we yeah, we need to we need to chat about that. But yeah, okay. Anyway, it was really it was really interesting. Cause then Dyl, yeah. And for anyone wondering, Dylan is the investigator, uh, which is I think a five. No, you're a five. Then he's a six. No, you s I thought you said I'm a six. Oh, then he's a five. Sorry, I get the fives and sixes mixed up. But he's the like very it it's just a really interesting, like if you have teammates um or a partner. Business partners, other partners, yeah. It's so helpful. It's just it's really I mean, the it's so in-depth.
SPEAKER_02So you better be gonna do the same test and go through something with my girlfriends tonight. Yep. We'll be able to do that. It's really, it's really, really fun.
SPEAKER_01Let me know what everyone is. Um yeah. So we did that. What did the text say from Ellen? Oh, so Ellen Ellen listened to last week's podcast. Ellen and then also Sarah Knight. Um, and Ellen, I'll just have to read it. Okay, Ellen said, I listened to your latest podcast. I think Hannah and I are the exact same. And that's when Ellen and I went on a ride later, and I was like, I think, I think Hannah is also a loyalist. She's like, I know she is for sure. Yeah, which makes sense. Okay, I have a lot of loyalists in my life too, which I'm like, God, that really must be stressful for both of us to be friends with the other one.
SPEAKER_02Well, I I I feel, you know, it's interesting. I was just talking to somebody about how I often find myself in like partnerships, uh, either like with you or with my business partner, and even with Jeff, with like people who are really like motivated and are the idea people.
SPEAKER_00Um, and then I'm always the one who's like, yeah, I think we should like, okay, like let's do that and like let's see it through. But I don't feel like I'm always like the idea person.
SPEAKER_02I just am the one who but but idea people often like seek me out. Like we there's a good there's something about like that connection that makes a lot of sense. And um, like with Enneagram in like a similar way, I bet like you're reading that, and I'm like, also sounds like my business partner, and you know they're part of like the achiever mostly, but well, I think I know what Ren is too, but again, offline.
SPEAKER_01I don't want to like just go and out people's Enneagrams. I think that that's yeah, that makes so much sense.
SPEAKER_02Also, I don't know, I was just guessing. I would like you to tell me which Enneagram number um contributes to my weird fixations on um I I'm like so down the rabbit hole on nails.
SPEAKER_01You've been here before with Jordy, in fact. This is why don't you just go and get them done?
SPEAKER_00No, no, no, no, no, no, no, too far. Because here's the deal that costs money, but I would rather spend triple that and get all the stuff myself and spend more time.
SPEAKER_01Can I tell you where I'm at with it? First of all, look at how freaking cute. Yeah, those are really cute. They look like um fun fetty nails. No, what was that? The Zoom room, or what was that like like a bounce room, like a kid bounce room? Yeah, like it is like a kid. It is a little clowny. It is a little clowny. I did it and I said, well, um in her clown nails. But I figured out how to do builder gel. These are builder gel. Oh, good job. Wow, sweet. Well, I'll maybe switch to going to you. Well, I need to figure out how to get them off.
SPEAKER_00Um, and so I'm about to, I feel like now I'm like, well shit, I have to get one of those like Dremel E-file things, and I need a carbide bit, and I need the same. Oh, and you need the little fan that's just suck all the dust up. I but I'm so like it actually is. This is why I'm like, this is part of my Enneagram.
SPEAKER_02Where I No, I think that's just hyperfixation. It feels so nice to be fixated on something that is like I'm not doing it for like the shop, I'm not doing it for the podcast, I'm not doing it for tattooing, like I just am like doing it for myself and for fun.
SPEAKER_01And uh, but boy am I in it deep. Aren't they cute though? They're so cute. I always know when they lasted. I get mine done too. Shoulder gel is kind of hard. It's not like it's not an easy process. Yeah, it's great.
SPEAKER_02Well, no, I know it's like physically hard, but it also is like a little bit challenging to do. But um, yeah, so I'm thinking of starting another business.
SPEAKER_00No, I'm just kidding. Just kidding.
SPEAKER_01Not yet. No, they're like on there. Here, I'll text you your Enneagram. You can't see an Enneagram. Sorry. I'm like, tell me if it means that I'm a crazy hyperfixator and I'm ready to be. Okay, so great. We got that out of the way. Enneagram's nails. Done. Done. Um, I had I would say one of the more frustrating parts of my pregnancy journey thus far, that is a new-ish symptom that's can't come back up, is the pregnancy brain. And like, it gets a bad rap because I think people like to, you know, oh, pregnancy brain, you know, oh. No, I think it's a real thing, right? It is a real thing. It was so annoying. We were on our way out of town. I have a very old car, it doesn't have car play, it has an auxiliary cord, and I wanted to listen to a podcast with Dylan in the car, and I was like, I need to buy the little Donald thing, and you know, for my phone, blah, blah, blah. We go to the Apple store, which is a cluster, on our way out of town, mind you. And we go in, and Dylan was like, Well, check to make sure you even have the auxiliary cord. So I go into my car, find the little cord, and then I'm like, Yeah, I got it. Let's go in and buy one. We mess the Apple store in Albuquerque, is always packed. And we I buy the dongle. Absolutely. Always packed. It's a zoo in there. And then the first and only time I've ever watched Dylan use Apple Pay, he pays for it. We leave, we go get in the car, and Dylan goes, Oh my god, you're an idiot. You already have one of these. And I had held it in my hand before we went into the store.
SPEAKER_00What do you mean? Like you like had the dongle attached to the aux cord, and then you looked at it and said, Nope, don't have one of these. Yes. This right here, I need it. I need this. This is the piece, this is the exact piece on it. I gotta put that on.
SPEAKER_01I thought in my head, I was like, oh, that's the old iPhone lightning charger. Oh. Oh no, no. It was really traumatic for me to realize that I had done that. And then and then it was even more worse because we couldn't even return it. It was$9. It doesn't even matter. Like it really didn't matter. Why couldn't you return it? Because Dylan used Apple Pay, ironically, and it didn't send him a receipt. What that doesn't that actually doesn't make any sense. We were talking to the and I was like, fuck this, let's just leave. Anyway, it was really annoying. And then I was like really embarrassed, and and then I had, yeah, anyway, it was really annoying. Did you know that? Yeah, I glitched a little bit because I was like, this is actually so frustrating frustrating. But then we've been feeling the baby kick a lot. Oh, Dylan could feel it. What? You haven't told me that. Well, I wanted to wait to the pod. No, I didn't. I just forgot. Pregnancy brain.
SPEAKER_00Actually, that's funny. I think Jordy or Meg was like, uh, has your sister been using like pregnancy as like an excuse for a lot of things? Like no, they were like, has she been using the pregnancy card? And I was like, no, I don't think so. Not much. And I was like, yeah, well, actually.
SPEAKER_01On second thought, all the time. Um, what you're feeling it kick? Yeah, Dylan could feel it. It was crazy. Really? Okay, so can you you can feel it like you can feel it on the inside, like you're you don't have to touch, and you can feel when it's kicking you. Yes, and it it's progressed. Where is it kicking? In my uterus. All over it. No, no, I understand, but like fucking idiots. It's like under under my belly button. Okay. What are you asking?
SPEAKER_00I was just wondering where you felt it. Like, uh oh.
SPEAKER_01Like up the left quadrant, like where. No, it's it's like to the right or left of my belly button. Because I think the thing is like sitting like head here, feet here, and then it'll flip around. It's so crazy. Is so crazy. And then you could feel it. Uh-huh. Yeah. But then it's like Dylan's just a real sleepy guy, so like every time now we he like tries to feel it at night, because like that's when you know I'm the most still, and the baby is not. Uh Dylan will fall asleep before he feels the kick. Like, fall asleep with his like sweaty hand on my stomach. It's really touching. And I'm like, move that out of the way. Get out of here.
SPEAKER_00But he also, what was his reaction when he felt it? He was like, that's crazy. Wow, that is crazy.
SPEAKER_02I still like I know you're pregnant. Obviously, I know you're pregnant, but there's like, I just like I cannot wrap my brain around it. Like we were we were out last night, and this woman had like a pretty new baby and like a little honestly, it looked like a stroller for a dog, and I was hoping it was a puppy, but really every time it was a baby.
SPEAKER_00Um, but it was a pretty fresh one, and I was like, oh my god, I literally said, I was like, Sarah's gonna have one of those. I know.
SPEAKER_01I feel the same way. Blows my mind. Me too. So like they're just like hearing that, I'm like, what the fuck? That's crazy. Because like I would say most of pregnancy has just felt like a limiter, you know? Like you just kind of don't feel good. And then it's really it's it's so far away that like, yeah, you're like, okay, I get like the occasional baby product here and there, but like it really doesn't like click all of the time, you know? Or at least for me, it doesn't. Um, and then like when you feel probably so different for every single person. I I'm just kind of I don't know, I have a hard time like picturing that like until I'm experiencing it. But um yeah, it's been it's yeah, it was really fun to like see every all of our family and like you know, the parents just want to see a pregnant, which is funny. Yeah, I thought it was really cool for everyone to see. Yeah, we saw Carmen, I saw, you know, Susie, I saw Barbara.
SPEAKER_02Um I love that you're basically just like um like a little show pony.
SPEAKER_01Like everyone just gets like wiggly around and be like, here's my pregnant little show pony. Well, and then I learned about these things called Braxton Hicks contractions. I know about what that is, Sarah. Oh, see, I didn't. What do you think they are?
SPEAKER_02They're like um fake, like they feel like contractions, but it's it's like not actually the real deal.
SPEAKER_01Practice. Oh, it's a word for me to say. Practice. Practice. Yeah. But I think I see, I that's the stuff that I'm like, I can read about it, but I'm like, is that what I was feeling on my ride the other day? Because I'll like feel this like intense.
SPEAKER_00No, you can't now.
SPEAKER_02Really? Mm-hmm. See now this yeah. I feel like this starts getting into like some of like all the stressful stuff. Like, I don't know. See, that's not stressful to me.
unknownUgh.
SPEAKER_02It's not to be like, what's this cramping? Like I would I would feel nervous. I had to get off.
SPEAKER_01I feel like you just have to trust yourself.
SPEAKER_00But like you also sometimes. Yeah, that's true. You have to like really pay attention to like if something like you know when something's wrong, wrong.
SPEAKER_01And like I had I had some big growth moments. This little loop cycle fine, we'll talk about cycling. Um sports, sports, sports, sports. We have to keep saying sport things so we get classified as a sports comedy podcast.
SPEAKER_02I don't think we're I don't think we're classified as a sports comedy podcast anymore, but keep going.
SPEAKER_01I'll stop talking about nails. No, we won't. Um well to well, okay, so I had a a funny to me it was really an interesting moment of growth and change in my life. Um I decided to go, I I felt really good on Saturday, like good for pregnant Sarah. And I was like, oh, did I just lie to all of my followers and friends that I'm having a really hard pregnancy? Because I finally, honestly, have been feeling really good. And like my HRV finally kicked up, so I like I'm in the green. Uh thanks, Garmin, for letting me know that. So I was like, all right, you know what? I know that the Rafa girls are doing this big workout on the passes. Like they rode almost to Silverton, but they like started in town. Um, and for those of you who don't live in Durango, it's like 50, it's like a 50-mile one way. So like they did 100 miles, I think. Um, and it's pretty much like all uphill one way, um, because you climb over two mountain passes, so it's all climbing. Um, and then anyway, so they were gonna do this big workout together, which is so fun. Like they had all their little like race suits on, and I was like, Oh, I really want to try and join the ride. And um, I also know how it feels to train, and someone wants to join your ride who you're like, you're not gonna be able to join the ride, but I don't want to say don't. So I was like, hey, I would love to join you guys. I'm totally self-sufficient, I'm just gonna hang on for as long as I can, and then you just do you, and I'm totally fine. So I was really prepared to like do a full day solo, and I just wanted to like see how long I could hang. So I decided to like track them and meet them. Like I drove the first part of the ride, and I was like looking at all their little dots and like timed it perfectly, had all my little snacks, like did like I don't fit in my like race uh skin suit anymore. Um, and so I had to like figure out how to bring extra water, and I was like, I have no idea if this is gonna work, but like whatever. If I feel crappy, you just turn around. Um, and so I like met up with them and it was so fun, and it was so illuminating for me to see what we do as athletes and how because I like I was able to hang for a few hours, um, which was great. Like, I was stoked. I mean, honestly, I was just like pumped to ride with my friends. Um, feel I mean, I was really un I was definitely uncomfortable. Like, it is not I'm hyper aware of where my uterus is because it's jabbing into my organs and my legs every single petal stroke hit my stomach. So like it's it's little fucking baby. It's just like ow, ow, ow, ow, ow.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm not sure. Get with it, baby. It's gonna be like a little UFC boxer because it's like I've been hit my entire in utero.
SPEAKER_01Thank god it's got a lot of amniotic fluid in there just nestling it. But yeah, because it's like, man, this thing is gonna be resilient. Um and it was honestly like really active that night, so I think it really responded to the the stimulus.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, so it was gonna be like you.
SPEAKER_01I mean, it is, it's half of me. I guess that is how it goes.
SPEAKER_00I just keep thinking that it's gonna come out like a little bit like me, you know, and I'm like, but do you also want to sit on the couch for a while? It might. Couldn't that be fun?
SPEAKER_01It could be like you're sick. Like, my parents like riding bikes. I'm out, I'm hanging with Aunt Honey. Like, come dance with me.
SPEAKER_00Auntie Honey, we will do art projects, we will paint our nails, we will dance, we will eat incredible snacks, and we'll watch reality TV, and it's gonna be the most fun. Welcome.
SPEAKER_01Anyway, sorry, what are you talking about with riding your bike? Well, I just it was cool, it really was it was not unmotivating to me. Like, I just was like stoked to be riding, be feeling better. It was really nice weather, and it just allowed me to see, like, I know that if I was like normal Sarah, not pregnant Sarah, I would be doing the same workout as them. And it allowed me to see it from a totally different vantage point of like what athletes can do. And like, like, yeah, it just was it was cool to see.
SPEAKER_00So like far away from like what you're able like physically to do right now, and you're like, so far away.
SPEAKER_02Okay, like I because I and yeah, that's an interesting take because I do think when you're like so far in it, it's like one of the things where it's like, okay, I could do this, so I'm and and like you know, I did this hard ride, um, and then today it like actually didn't feel that hard, so I'm just gonna like push it a little bit more and push it a little bit more and push it. And then you go so far that then like bumping down that many steps that quickly probably yeah, I I can see how that would feel totally different.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. I mean, currently is, but it was sort of this like you know, Danny and I were talking about that today, like. It's easier for me to just know like that this has uh an end. Like I know there's an end to the end day, you know. I I understand. Yeah, of course I I get that. Like I understand that like postpartum, you know, is not a walk in the park, and I'm anticipating that as well. But I like what I'm trying to say is like there will be change at some point. Like this is not a constant state. And that's a really hard thing as an athlete, you know, or just person. Um, you know, I just can only speak from being person athlete, you know, to wrap your head around because I'm just so used to like person athlete. I am person athlete, and we are people athlete as well on this pod, hopefully. But yeah, it's just it was it was cool to see like I was truly like at my max. And then I and then I backed off because I was like, eh, I probably shouldn't be pushing it. That like I it felt so good to push and go hard because I like really loved that, but then I was physically just so uncomfortable too. Yeah. It's like uh yeah, this is but then I just I honestly just you know waved good. I didn't even wave. They had an another interval set, and um I just was like, I'm I was like, this is my last one. See you guys, like I'll see you on the downhill. I I'll either flip or I won't. And I saw them come, and I actually wasn't too far off, but I was like just kind of enjoying it and like went a little bit further on my own and then really took my time, and then I had to pee one million fucking times. I was wondering about like, are you having to pee all the time? Yes, and like bib shorts are the only things that like kind of feel okay because I can wear them over my belly button, because like, but then you have to get totally undressed. It just I mean it added probably an hour on to my ride of just peeing.
unknownI'm not kidding.
SPEAKER_01Tony was like, Are you okay? But it was great. Like I was in, I was out there, like I really I actually really love riding alone and like um, but Ellen, similar to you, you know, she was tracking, like they got they finished their ride uh with enough time to go to the king's protest, no king's protest, and I was like, wanted to go, but I rode way too slow to I like fully missed the whole thing. But I was like, well, at least at least they were there. But she was like, Text me when you get back to the car, like and I'll track you, and yeah. And I love her for that. I we I thank you, Ellen. Yeah, thank you. Shout out, truly, big shout out to Ellen, big L. Damn, but yeah, it was it was really cool, and then and I just really liked riding with my girlfriends, and like yeah, it was just fun to be like, wait for me, but don't well and good for good for you because I imagine there will be times uh good for you that like you're able to just accept that like this is where I'm at right now.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, totally. Um, and like still like enjoy the pieces. I I'm super curious how things are gonna feel. I mean, there's just so much coming up, obviously, but like you know, when you're it's time to like start training again eventually, and like what yeah, how that mentally feels, and if you'll be able to like hold on to parts of that and just be like, okay, this is just where I'm at, and like I just have to be where I am because there's nothing I can do about it. Like, yeah, I I I'm just curious where what that's gonna feel like.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, I don't know. Like, I just don't ever really like right now what I do impacts another person. So, like, that has been a really big shift. Like, there's no fucking way in hell at all normal Sarah would have ever turned around just because I was like uncomfortable on the bike. But there was like, I mean, I I went back and forth.
SPEAKER_00Hold on, I have I'm gonna mm- So, like, what happens when like we're hiking and like I'm really fucking ready to turn around and you keep going like that impacts another person. You're fine.
SPEAKER_01You just wouldn't listen. When you were crying, when you were yeah, then I will give you cheese and you'll be fine. I know when uh that does that's very different. You are not dependent on my nutrients and livelihood. What if I'm bored? Then find a different sister. Okay. I would love to. No, I wouldn't.
SPEAKER_02I wouldn't. That would suck.
SPEAKER_01Uh anyway, okay. But yeah, it was. Well, and then and then the following yesterday I was like, oh, I'm just gonna keep this party going and ride with my friends. You know, yesterday we did a gravel ride, and uh it was with like Dylan and some of our guys, well, Roscoe and Ben, and Kayla joined us, and then she had to turn because she had a knee issue, and then it was me and the three boys, and I was just so miserable the whole time. And every time Dylan, like I I was just suffering, like I was really tired from the day before. Because it's not as fun to be with boys, and it's just not as fun, and they had no, like, I know even though I told those girls to like don't like I'm fine, don't consider me. Like, do your workout that I'm just purely like here along, literally for the ride. Um, and I know all three of them, Michaela, Maud, and Ellen, at some point in the middle of their workout, were like, oh, I hope so, like they thought of like my well-being, or like they were like, You're doing so good, like this is awesome, like you're crushing it. Like they, but not in like a gaggy way. Like they were just truly like they just thought of someone else. These guys, I swear to god, like I mean, Dylan for sure would have like, I was like, Did you even remember I was on the ride? He and Ben were descending so fast, and I was so far behind Roscoe, who doesn't live here and didn't know the ride. They that Roscoe fully missed the turn that Dylan and Ben had taken. They didn't wait at the inner, it was in a full intersection, a turn, and they didn't wait. And then Roscoe took the wrong turn, and I was like yelling to Roscoe, and then he and I ended up having to ride extra because they took a wrong turn. And that's why we don't spend time with boys. Oh my god, and then I was I told Alex, uh, I was like, every time Dylan went to the front of the ride, it made me want to do it. Alex is also Roscoe.
SPEAKER_02I just feel you used a different name, and there are a lot of names being thrown around, and like not everyone knows. Alex Roscoe. But I also kind of hard to follow.
SPEAKER_01On the way to the ride, I was telling Kayla, Roscoe's partner, uh, that Dylan is like the worst ride leader because he like can't fathom that people don't know aren't in his head and don't know every intersection that he's and then he'll stop, but he'll wait around a turn so you can't see which way he's gone. And so I'll I will nine times out of ten always choose the other one. He's like, What do you do? Why are you going that way? And I'm like, I didn't even see you. Why were you anyway? And that does sound really fun. Wow. And I was like, ugh, I don't really like writing with men right now because they like really and like in Moab, they were just making fun of me for being pregnant.
SPEAKER_02Um, I did see a thing that you posted about like your recovery time. Oh gosh, you're gonna need to get an AC in your house.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, let's see. What is Garmin telling me my recovery? Yeah. Yesterday I was at, I needed 82 hours to recover, is what my watch was telling me. What would that normally have been like if you did that ride? Oh. Which is actually crazy because I'm pretty sure it calculates your TSS, not toxic shock syndrome. It's some I knew that you were gonna say that. Uh it's all calculated based on your power and heart rate, I think. And like, anyway, so but my heart rate has been really low in pregnancy. So like 160 beats per minute feels like my max. And normally my max heart rate is like 189. But I have not seen, I've not seen well, I haven't seen high 180s in a while, but like um, I have not seen my heart rate in pregnancy go over 160 beats per minute, but it feels like I'm at my max. Like that's my because I think I have just a lot of blood. I don't know. It's really I I really want to ask you. You have a ton of blood, right? Yeah. Yeah, your blood volume I think like doubles or something insane. That is so wild. I mean, we're sorry for like medical professionals who for some reason listen to this podcast because they're like, I don't think they do. Wrong, wrong. No, they do. They're out there. That is crazy. Feel free to correct us in the comments. Because then we'll learn. Please do. Um, but yeah, it was just a really funny contrast going from like girl ride to boy ride. But I also was just like smoked. And then we stopped at a gas station that was like less than a mile from the house. You need to and Dylan also bonked, so I was like, maybe he was going hard. See?
SPEAKER_00He's like, this is my chance to go harder than Sarah.
SPEAKER_01Listen, I might be pragmatizing on it. Still competitive.
SPEAKER_00She still got it. Still got it. Still got it.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god. Um, okay, I just wanted to recap. There's a race this weekend, another Gravel Earth series um called The Hills. Um have eyes. It's in uh The Hills Have Wheels. The Hills Have Wheels. Um, well, it looked like there's a little bit of drama in the women's.
SPEAKER_02I love there's nothing I love here. Like, I've got some gossip, I've got some drama. I want to know it.
SPEAKER_01Oh god, it's all in Italian.
unknownOh.
SPEAKER_01Trans. Okay, well, I'm just gonna go to I don't want to be able to do it. Somebody else can look up their results. Yeah. Uh well I know that Braden Link, Bitty Baby Braden. Bitty baby! Bitty baby Braden won. Good job, little baby. Oh, our guy. Our bitty baby. Our bitty baby. Baby. Uh yeah, so he won. Uh honestly, it was a big, it's a big win. Like that was a gnarly. Oh, actually, a cool thing from that. So Braden used to race pro XCT, so like mountain bike, like World Cup mountain bike. Um and uh Nino Scherter is like the most winning, he's a legend, like greatest of all time male mountain bike uh athlete. And he retired last year from mountain biking. He's a Swiss guy. Um, and he this was like his first ever gravel race, and he hopped in and Braden beat like one of his childhood heroes from mountain biking. Because Braden used to be a little bitty baby mountain biker, and he beat Nino, which is kind of biker, a bitty baby biker. Uh anyway, I thought that was cool. Um, so good job, Braden. And then the Hills. Sorry, I I don't actually know the women. Um okay, this woman, Larissa Hartig. Um she won, and she's on the Canyon team. Um, and she comes from road racing. And it sounds like she was with the woman who got second place in the race. This is based on post-race interviews from Fantasy Gravel. Um and so they interviewed her, and she was like very excited, like, you know, she is sort of new-ish, kind of to Gravel, but yeah, she's on this gravel team, like big result, super cool. They interviewed Second Place, um, who's also a European. Um, she races for a European road team, the UAE team. And she was she was really nice. She you could tell she was like really bummed, um, but she was like trying to be professional in the interview. And she was like, Yeah, there was like a little bit of a misunderstanding. Like, I'm really disappointed because I was feeling really good, which is like every time, like, of course, like when you get second or third, it sucks. And like you were probably feeling really good, and it was really close, and you made an error and it resulted in you not winning. And she was like, Yeah, so we were all together, and then all of us took a wrong turn together, and then she decided to turn around and go back to the the track, like on her, you know, garment or whatever. And then I guess, well, for sure the winner, and I don't know if other women also kept going, and they ended up seemingly shortcutting the course, and I don't know if they were aware that they were shortcutting or like it was how big the shortcut was, if it was uh they just they diverted, and the girl who got second took a different route than the girl who got first. Uh-oh. How does that work? Aren't there like rules about like, hey, you cut off this amount of time, you don't like dequeued, or you get like a time penalty or something? I mean, there's been drama in like the migration gravel. Uh, the year before I did that race in um in Africa, the winner like there was some back and forth between first and second place. The two women, like there was a lot of like, I mean, here's the thing with these gravel races, it's not like a short course where you lap it, so every little inch is marked off by tape. Like, no, there's like you have people at intersections, and then like maybe on like some more confusing sections, you'll have some tape, but like, you know, they're hundreds of miles long, they're not gonna like mark it. So, like, people take wrong turns and it happens, but like, yeah. For those of us who are rule followers, I would just literally never be like, oh, I've did you just say for those of us who are rule followers, Hani. I am a thousand percent in a race.
SPEAKER_02Rule follower in a race. Oh, yeah. I was just like, taxes and anything else.
SPEAKER_00I'm just kidding. Taxes. Lily cut that anyway.
SPEAKER_02So that's so we don't know what's going on with that. Like the girl who won because she cut off.
SPEAKER_01We'll say, like, I love Gravel Earth. They do a fabulous job collecting like really sick bike races from all of around the world. Like the one in Morocco looked really awesome, Hills look super cool. I'm like really wanting to do all these next year, and I'm like, shit, we're gonna have a kid. Probably can't. Damn it. Does look a lot harder. Or we just bring our kid to Italy.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you could do it.
SPEAKER_01The applications for no pair are open.
SPEAKER_02I watched these people get off the plane the other day, and they had like a couple of kids and a bunch of luggage, and I was I was so impressed by them. It made me think of of how you and Dylan will eventually figure it out. But like the woman, like, without communicating with each other, they like got off the like train thing, and like she had the kid with like the stroller the stroller, the double stroller, and then like a bunch of luggage, and then he had a luggage, and then he had like this clip thing that attached a different luggage to it. And I was like, Oh, they've done this before and they know what they're doing. And I feel like sorry, I can just see you click or hear you clicking away. I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_01What are you you're not even listening to me. I'm just talking in a little bit. I'm so sorry, that was really rude. I just realized that I'm gonna have our photo shoot in like 45 minutes, and I forgot to put my chamois in the dryer. So you're just texting Dylan to do that. I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. Will you that's okay? Sorry, it was really rude.
SPEAKER_02It was really rude. It wasn't important what I was saying. Um It was actually a compliment to you, but it's okay. I don't want to, I don't want to I don't want to repeat it.
SPEAKER_01Oh shit, driving Roscoe to Cortez.
SPEAKER_02Do you need to pause and go put those in the dryer really quick? Yeah, one second. Go do that.
SPEAKER_01Sorry. And I'm really hot.
SPEAKER_02Okay, we'll take your sweatshirt off. Um, okay, Sarah, I actually quit the podcast. Um, while we were doing this, uh, Meg and Jordy were having like a really deep conversation and I missed all of it.
SPEAKER_00And I I just was like, Sarah's change your clothes or whatever. Like, um I can say hi and we can have an intermission. And I was like, what are you guys talking about? They're like, herbal tea.
SPEAKER_01And I was like, no, you're not. And they said, we'll unpack later. Like herbal tea. Like tea as in their dishing up the tea.
SPEAKER_02They probably were talking about life decisions and the most important things possible, and I missed it all. And that's all. And I quit. Oh, I just spit so much. Did you see that?
SPEAKER_01No, I was just looking at my throat.
SPEAKER_02Okay. My notes. What else do you have? It's we've got we should probably start wrapping it up pretty soon.
SPEAKER_01Um big news last week. The Lifetime Grand Prix announced officially their newest pregnancy policy. So the Sturm Clause. Not. Um, but yeah, I definitely was obviously like a big part of a big pregnant part of that. Um because I had been accepted to the Grand Prix, and then, you know, as I said in my post, I was they were like one of my first phone calls once, you know, we knew that everything was okay and blah, blah, blah. And, you know, to their credit, I was like, hey, this is sort of like I my goals are this, and I think it also would be really cool for other women who might be in the same, you know, situation as me in the future to have this as an opportunity, you know, to continue racing because it's really easy to start feeling like even from yourself or your sponsors or whatever, um, it starts to sort of feel like your life is gonna be over, you know, once you decide to have kids. And for any woman in a career, like it's totally fine if you transition and become a totally new person and don't want to, you know, do that. It's also totally fine if you do and you prioritize yourself and your career and being a mom and you know, being a partner. And so I just like it's just nice to have options, and so option, yes, yeah, and that and that, you know, having a choice is privilege, and we want that privilege that uh other people have in the same sport. So they really stepped it up and like, I mean, it's a big thing to like, no, is it gonna affect every athlete? Absolutely not, but like it could affect 50% of the athletes in, you know, in their race.
SPEAKER_02So I thought it could also change like what people, you know, not to have to sacrifice your either having a family or having this career at this time, like it could um make it so that somebody doesn't have a regret, you know, on one in one way or the other. And that's a that's a huge deal.
SPEAKER_01That's like a yeah, that's like a lifetime thing, you know. Yeah, totally nice. Well, and it came at a really interesting moment in you know sport history in some ways, because um, I don't know if you saw this, but this company uh, uh this gel company, um, and I I don't know the details. I'm just like reading what's out there. Um uh they dropped one of their athletes, and I because she was pregnant, because they found she found out she's pregnant. So her agent was communicating. Let me see. She and this is she's a runner, right? Uh her, I think I believe she's a marathon runner. Um, and and she's really well known. And I, you know, she's in her mid-30s also, and she announced to the world, and I saw her pregnancy announcement, so exciting, you know, blah, blah, blah. And then a couple days later, I think the same day that we announced with Lifetime that, you know, everything in that sort of blew up uh in a positive way. Um, and people were really excited. Yeah, so excited. And then you saw it.
SPEAKER_02I saw a thought for just a second, because I just want to say like about the positivity of it. Um, I was on Facebook because I use it for like Facebook marketplace or something, and the I think it was like the Cycling News Weekly or whatever that publication is, had their post. And like I knew what I was I knew I was making a mistake by clicking the comments and reading because it was Facebook and com comments on Facebook.
SPEAKER_00Facebook because that's pool. All positive. I really what?
SPEAKER_02There was one and that's how you well, that was a while ago. I haven't looked at it since then.
SPEAKER_01But I already remember okay. There actually was a comment that I was like, what is this person? Don't look it up, Sarah. Okay, that was all.
SPEAKER_02That I just wanted to say, like, you know, it's a good thing when like even all of the Facebook comments are positive. Okay, go back to the runner.
SPEAKER_01It's really annoying to me that I can't remember this runner's name because I follow her. Anyway, and I'm sorry, it's gonna drive some people crazy. Um, it's driving me crazy, just know that. Not as much as it's gonna drive you crazy. But anyway, so apparently her they claim that they had been in conversation with her agent before they knew she was pregnant and dropped her, like before that, or like they went separate ways or whatever. So that was their press statement. Was like, oh, we this all happened before, and now she's claiming that this happened after we knew. And my response to that is even because I had I training peaks is a great example. I before I announced anything publicly, I told I was like, hey, you guys have an out, like legit, you guys, I have signed nothing. You know, I'm giving you the out because when we entered this conversation, I had very different goals for the 2026 season. And now that's not gonna be. So I would like gave them the out. And and honestly, if they took it, I would have fully, fully understood. I mean, it would have been a bummer because it's like money, but like, you know, I can find money elsewhere and Whatever, but they decided that they were like, no, we're gonna just support a female pregnant athlete and continue to do that and good on them training peaks. And UCAN should have done the exact like, oh, she's pregnant. Hey, let's talk about this. Um there was just a very different they said that they cut her before they knew she was pregnant.
SPEAKER_02You think they should have gone back and been like, okay, now that we know that you're pregnant, like go back and and sign her again for optics?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Well, the way that they it wasn't that cut and dry. Like they weren't like we dropped her before she was pregnant. They were like in conversation about not re-signing her before they knew she was pregnant. So it's it's hard to say if ink had dried, if you know, whatever. And like it's really hard to have like you know, I don't know. But it's not a good, it's it's not a good look.
SPEAKER_02And like I hate, you know, if something comes across as like insincere, you know, to like to keep her because she's pregnant and being and for optics, but if your whole business is based off of like the reason you have a sponsored athlete is for optics, then yeah, you have you you do totally like aside from it being the right thing to do and like prog being progressive and all of these things, like why wouldn't you? I don't know. Yeah, I don't know. It's so we don't know that that's like the actual story. I'm I'm certain that somebody will who like really is no like following and knowing what's going on will will comment and like let us know the full the full bit.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we're like dipping a toe into the running community. Please let us know. But it's crazy dipping a toe in, which is funny. Yeah, it just it just felt like oh my god, we take like one step forward and like 20 steps backwards. Yeah. Well, and then like Kara Gitcher, who sorry, I like Go ahead. Um I she was a famous marathon runner who was dropped by Nike famously when she was pregnant. Um well and she wrote a whole like I read one book Oh uh like mid-2000s. That was a stupid question to ask early to mid-2000s. Okay, yeah, but I mean her like she yeah, it was it was like at the time of like the whole crazy Nike stuff where like the abuse was happening and like that one crazy coach was like mistreating all of these athletes, and anyway, I don't know about any of this, but yeah, and she basically came out on social media in light of this whole scandal and said, like when I was pregnant with my children, like I basically had to take my own leave of absence because you know my sponsors were like, Oh, you're pregnant, good luck. Let me know if you're like you know, setting records, and then the year after she like ran like a record-setting marathon pace, like without sponsorship, which happens all the time. So I think the really progressive thing is to like I mean, and someone did comment this, they're like, You they really should give you two years to defer, which is totally I totally agree with that. It does also complicate things, like in in a big way, in a very big way. Like, I I have to say, like, a lot can change in you know a month. And well, and this is like the first iteration of this clause.
SPEAKER_02It is it's baby steps, for lack of better terms.
SPEAKER_01And I don't I don't disagree, and I don't also disagree with Lifetime's decision and how they rolled it out because like it just it's a really complicated thing. I mean, we were I was emailing them about like, okay, like what if you have a miscarriage? Like it just, you know Yeah, there are a lot of parts and pieces. Yeah, so like just know it we're thinking about all of that stuff, and it's just it's hard to put things into a concrete policy because it's scary. Like you're yeah, you're putting your neck out there um in a lot of ways.
SPEAKER_02Well and the good news is that like you like they are willing, obviously, and like in communication with you, and if they're able to do that, then like um you know it's interesting that you're like the kin guinea pig in this that like you'll have feedback for them about like what that looks like. There's just it starts the conversation, it's steps in the right direction, and it's a bit and it's a really big deal.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and I have to shout out Michelle. Um, she was a bit she works for Lifetime and she basically like is the woman behind like making sure the Grand Prix like happens. Um and uh she was a huge part of this. Her and chemo um really made it happen. So yeah, it just um you know it's scary to like ask for those things as an athlete because I just feel like I live this life of like you're just constantly trying to like prove yourself and appease everybody and like show your value and you don't want to ruffle feathers and la la la because you're really vulnerable, like you are very replaceable as an athlete. Um and it's good, like it's good for people to know that, and um, but it's also like yeah, it feels very scary as a you know, uh a compromised female athlete. Like those are two, you know, two qualifiers that sort of like can demote you in a lot of ways. And um it just felt like a huge win um without even like racing.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I mean, that is a huge win. And that's like, you know, when I think about you in the sport, um like really zoomed out of just like okay, um, like your legacy or whatever it is, like how you show up. Like, I've always thought about like the stuff that I'm proud of. Sorry, that was a lot of lead up to what I'm drinking. Uh the the stuff I'm proud of is like how you show up for other people, both pros and especially amateurs, um, and like young people who are getting into the sport, like that's a huge legacy. But then also like this piece um is massive, and like that is something that is so much more um impactful than just winning a race. Yes. And that's what I think you've done such a good job with in your career thus far. And it's exciting to see like you continue to do that in different ways because you're such a like boundary pusher in a really good way, um, like for the better and like for the general like growth of of the sport and um betterment of the sport. Yeah, that's huge.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, tanks, and that's all I have to say about that. I will have to go chat with my friends. Okay, I will say like one last thing. I'm pretty sure they also rolled out if unless this already existed. I can't sorry, I can't remember the fine details. But if you sign up, sorry, if you sign up for a lifetime race that are really hard to get into and very expensive, like a lot of the times you have to qualify, blah, blah, blah. Um, like if you get into Leadville and as an amateur um and you become pregnant, you can then defer your entry for a year also. Cool. So it's not just for the Grand Prix and the pros.
SPEAKER_02So I do think that there's more to talk about with this. Yeah, I'm sure we'll get to it. Because like I yeah, I I I just I don't want to like I want to give it the proper time that it deserves and it can come up, you know, other times because I I think there's there's more to chat about. Um, but I want to be mindful of of time.
SPEAKER_01My time. I want my time. Totally. And I have to get to this little photo shoot um because it's springy now. Are you gonna have a soggy chamois or you put it in the dryer? No, it's in the dryer. That sounds bad.
SPEAKER_00Ugh.
SPEAKER_01Well, it will be.
SPEAKER_00I didn't know you could put chamises in the dryer. I thought that was.
SPEAKER_01But those are really not supposed to. Well, original chamis were leather, and you're not you're definitely not supposed to put that.
SPEAKER_00What? They were leather? Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_01You just had your bits rubbing up on some cowhide? Yeah, I don't think many women were wearing them. Okay, well, you're having your male bits rubbing up on some cowhide. Yeah. Yeah. Because that's what a chamois is, right? Oh, I don't know. Don't ask me. Well, I can't fact check it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because you won't let Tibety typing away on your computer. We could just tap the winner, tap the rotisserie chicken. Oh my god. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Uh thank you so much to Special. Actually, I'm gonna do a fun new shoot with my new custom crux for this year that everyone will get to see. Is that the one that you get to see? Uh yes, it is. Uh but it matches some of the trees. Um, so we're gonna do a fun little photo shoot. Everyone will get to see that. I know that was Rye's idea. Some of the trees, yeah. That's a great idea. I just requested that we don't do it under the anal gland smelling trees. Oh, that's not what I think it smells like. Uh, you and Dylan both.
SPEAKER_00And we're talking about Brad, what are they, Bradford pears? We all know exactly what they smell like. Yuckies. Anal gland yucky for from golden routine.
SPEAKER_01Something like that. Um, anyway, thank you so much, Specialized, for sponsoring this podcast and letting me use great equipment. I can't wait to sample a totally different part of the specialized line because I've always been on like the high-end race bikes. And honestly, the more arrow and aggressive the bike for me right now, the less comfortable it is. So I am I'm dabbling in other genres um at specialized. So I will keep you posted. Um, if you have any bike questions, please send them my way. Oh, I forgot to get to that. Anyway, thank you, Specialized. Uh, thank you with Pace Productions, and thank you so much to Lily, who's really gonna have to do some editing on this one. So I'm sorry that my brain is being slowly consumed by the alien baby inside of me. Have fun with your nothing to apologize for. I feel fake. Uh true little sister. Tell goodbye. Tell those girls. I will. I'll have them come out. Go ahead and stop it.
