Talking Over You
Hannah and Sarah Sturm grew up in the same household, live in neighboring towns, and hang out all the time. But in one respect, they couldn’t be more different: Sarah is a professional cyclist while Hannah has spent most of her life successfully avoiding bikes at all costs. They both know that Sarah has a weird job, and Hannah isn’t afraid to ask the sorts of questions that most people in the bike world would be too embarrassed to ask. Why is there a Queen Stage but not a King Stage? How old is gravel racing? Does everyone pee in their chamois? And most importantly, why on earth would anyone choose this as a job? Join the Sturm sisters every week to hear them laugh about their vastly different careers, argue about their shared memories, and drop unfiltered takes on just about everything.

Laini Bones on taking men's Strava crowns
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
If you’ve been on social media lately, chances are you’ve seen Laini Bones trash-talking and throwing heavy objects. For the past few months, her social media following has ballooned from a handful of family and friends to over 200k. Her specialty is taking the Strava KOMs of top male cyclists, including World Tour pros Quinn Simmons, Sepp Kuss, and Sean Quinn. Most importantly, she does a lot of trash talking in the process.
Laini stopped by Durango to topple a few more KOMs and had time to record this interview with Sarah and Hannah. She talks about leaving her finance career to pursue boning full time, the story behind her stage name, and the Reddit threads in which men try to discredit her power numbers. Plus, raccoon voyeurs, Dance Moms, and humping the Buffalo Bill museum sign.

Welcome to Talking Over You with Sarah Sturm and Hannah Sturm. Here we go.
SPEAKER_00If you're gonna be an asshole, be funny.
SPEAKER_01At least be funny. I thought it was a man coon. We need to have like a real athlete on here. It makes me uh consider different careers every time I have to pee in my chamois. I was just gonna see if you wanted to intro first or if you wanted to add read first. What's your last name? Or do we introduce you as bones?
SPEAKER_03That's actually that's actually an interesting question right now because I'm in between last names. Oh because I just got married.
SPEAKER_01Because she is a newlywed.
SPEAKER_03Which is which is why. Congrats, Grats. Thank you. Thank you. Uh, which is why we like six months ago thought of this and we gave me a stage name, which is Bones.
SPEAKER_01Okay. I love that. We're gonna go with it.
SPEAKER_00You wanna you wanna give her first name too?
SPEAKER_02Bones. Bones, comma laney.
SPEAKER_03Well, I asked, I asked. We got Bones, Laney in the studio. Uh change his last name to Bones. And we both Bones is such a sick last name. Our last name. To Bones? I mean, I don't think it'll happen, but that would be really fun.
SPEAKER_01But I mean, it already has like a lot of paperwork right now. We're putting a vote in. Alright, we'll do a poll. Bones is also like we've thought about changing our last name because Bones. Also to Bones.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_02And now we're all family members. And now we're relating to.
SPEAKER_03We thought of this like a year ago too.
SPEAKER_01We're actually this is us revealing it to the public. Um, okay, no, we have the very famous, very fast, very most most importantly, the very funny Lanny Bones. Always the most important. And we're gonna get into it. I'm so excited that we have a guest like in the studio. And by studio, we mean tiny, hot, hot office. Yeah while the hot studio gets built. Yeah. Thanks. Yay, welcome. Thank you for having me. You're gonna see how sweaty I get. No, I really get to see how sweaty. I think my like forehead vein will pop out on some more. Well, we can take bets on what's gonna happen first.
SPEAKER_00I'm already sunburned, so it's just I'm so high pop.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so we're all hot. Okay. Um, but also excitingly, um, Rafa is sponsoring this glorious episode. Um and we well, Rafa has a lot going on because the women's tour is coming up. So anyway, this episode is supported by Rafa and Swift as a part of their campaign celebrating the rivalries that push women cycling forward, which is perfect. Um, they push it forward on the road, on the trainer, in the communities that grow around the sport, which is basically exactly what Laney does. And if you don't understand that, you're so so dumb.
SPEAKER_03They've not been on the internet scrolling like me.
SPEAKER_01That it's so funny. And it's actually like this really supportive, cool thing that happens in cycling. Anyway, Rafa has a lot of cool stuff going on. Mainly that they brought Laney down to Durango and we get to do this podcast with her live. I was really mostly nervous um that I was gonna go into labor before we got to do this. So it's like really the one reason I sound like you might be in labor right now.
SPEAKER_00Oh, sorry.
unknownI was so hot.
SPEAKER_01That belly button is looking so weird. I could see Laney staring at it. She was nervous. She was nervous for the podcast, lol. Um Okay, I feel like we have to like just dive right in. Oh. Oh, I did the intro of who Laney is. Well, we're about to find out. Okay, great.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_01Sorry, we're bad interviewers. The worst because we just argue in front of our guests. Okay. But you've been actually tell us tell us a a little bit like about who you are because you're this huge internet sensation. You are like it's crazy. Uh you came across my desk in the form of a TikTok. The craziest thing is you came across my desk. And I just wild. That is reach. That is actually you've made it.
SPEAKER_00Because I you should look at my algorithm.
SPEAKER_01Not a single bike in sight. I actually was really proud of the fact that my TikTok had zero bikes, and I was like, what the fuck something got through, and it was you taking a dude's KOM. Okay, Laney, will you tell us who Laney Bones is? Okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Um I'm 29. I I live in Golden, Colorado. I just got married three weeks ago. Um I am a runner-turned cyclist.
SPEAKER_04Oh.
SPEAKER_03I uh ran for 10 years. Not not in college, not professionally, just like on my own. Uh, and I was like so deep into the high mileage uh that I burned myself out, uh, like like many runners do. And I actually like never get injured. I'm like built like very structurally sound. So I had like 10 consistent years of training and I like love to train. I don't like I I like to race. I wouldn't say like I'm like the race dog, like it's fun, and I'm doing some racing this year, but like I love racing? Uh I did I did race some some runs, as they say. Uh that is that is yeah, I won a marathon once. Yeah. Sorry? It was not there were no pros there, but I did win a marathon, and then I got I ran the Bend Oregon marathon in 2019 when I was in college. And I got second in that, and then like up for women, and then I won the next one I did in Utah.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_03So we're talking to an athlete athlete. Well, I know, I know you are because I'm not. I didn't have to roast any pros in those. It was like, it was like good amateurs. And so this was when you were in college, yeah, and like my first year out of school. And then I met um, well, I was training for Boston, and I was like it'd be like the second.
SPEAKER_01Is that hard to get into?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so I qualified for Boston on my second marathon. I think when you win a marathon, you probably qualify.
SPEAKER_01Well, I don't know what that means.
SPEAKER_03Like winning I it's like different age brackets have like a time. Okay. If they're that or under, then you qualify. And like depending on how many people qualify that year, they'll like shave it down to like be a little bit more competitive or less. So I qualified for Boston, and then I was training for Boston in Denver. And oh my god, I hated every run I went on. And I like it was to the point where I was just like doing it because I was like, this is who I am, like, I need to do this. And I um it was like a hot Saturday, and I was just feeling so bad, and I had my long run, and I called my now husband on the run and like cried into the phone, and I was like, the trip's off. We're not going to Boston. And I called my mom after that, and I was like, I'm sorry about the Airbnb booked, but I'm not going.
SPEAKER_00Like, there's no Boston and not run, right? Like, I can't fucking got it. It's like you could have kept the Airbnb and just got it. And like just go.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so they weren't happy about that, but I like didn't really it didn't like faze me that much. I was just like, I kind of need to like do something else that's fun. And then my husband, Gabe, he has always been a cyclist.
SPEAKER_01Is it weird to say husband now?
SPEAKER_03It is super weird. It's like so serious.
SPEAKER_01So natural coming out of you. I thought it I thought it was. I just like I feel my husband. I feel like it's it's still awkward for me. I feel like it's awkward when you say it. I know. I'm like, you're what? I know. It's it's a weird truth.
SPEAKER_03It's a weird, it's like we're like really deep in this now. Like we are like legally married, and that's like a big thing. Wow, you guys were way on it.
SPEAKER_01I waited like a year and a half after we got married to like sign the papers. We were like, whoopsie.
SPEAKER_03Anyway. Um, anyway, so he has been riding bikes since he was in high school, and he grew up in Northern California, and there's like a good racing scene there. So he used to like get up every weekend and go find a race. And he is like some he's burnt out of the racing scene, but he still does really like big rides. And so he was doing a lot of bike rides, and this was 2021, and I was like, Whatever you're doing looks way more fun than what I'm doing, just like slogging around Denver, like miserably. Yeah, and so I like had this steel frame that my dad got me in high school, and like we got it like fixed up enough at a shop, and I would like just suffer on his wheel, like, and we would do like a three-hour ride in in the hills, you know, west of Denver, and I was like so cracked every ride. I would be like, I didn't know what to eat, and then he'd be like looking back at me, be like, you need to eat like a another gel, another like fun for you to get into it with your significant other. He was so incredibly patient. Like he must have been doing 120 watts. Like, I I mean that's good. I haven't seen those numbers in 10 months. Like, he must like because he's he's like very strong, so he must have been doing no watts out there. Yeah, and he went to Fort Lewis. He didn't ride bikes here, he was like in a burnout period, but he like found this school because it's a bike school. Oh, funny. And he knew he wanted to live in Colorado. Cool, so he got me into it, and then I bought my first carbon bike, I got a Cannodale. Um, I was like, I'm really out here. I did some like cat five crits, and I was like, just like I had an aerobic base from running, and like I had enough skill from like my dad taught me how to draft in high school to where like I wasn't freaked out by going fast, and I wasn't like freaked out by drafting, so I could hang in. Yeah, and like I'm glad that my dad like was so encouraging in high school that he like was like we're riding bikes this weekend, and you know, helped helped me out later.
SPEAKER_01Wow. I mean that's really unique because every time I like take a newer friend on like a road ride specifically, I'm reminded like I you know, Sarah Knight. I was like, oh my god, this is so like I forgot how scary this is when you're just starting to like you're trying to like you're thinking about so many things. You're like, what came am I in? But also like who's next to me, but then you're like trying to like drafting is so hard. Yeah, like where do I look? I'm not looking at crazy.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, well, my dad is like genetically, I think, very gifted. Like he wasn't a pro, but he just like it seems like sports. Might have been passed on.
SPEAKER_02That's what I'm picking up on.
SPEAKER_03He would take me, like, I grew up in Fort Collins, he would take me like on the flats from Fort Collins to Wyoming and like just hammer the flats, and like if I would lose the wheel, he'd be like, It's harder back there, like it's easier on the wheel. And so I like got used to just like holding on to the wheel, which was like actually a good lesson.
SPEAKER_01Have you made it if you haven't been yelled at by your cyclist dad on the bike? Like, I feel like dad yelled at me when he was like, What are you doing matching my gears? And I'm like, because I don't understand shifting, I don't know. Yeah, while back here, she could also opt out completely and never ride. I know Hannah was like, no, thanks. That's really not for me. Truly. Like, I taught her when how old were you in 25? You know how like parents like run behind their kids and like let them go. It was I bet that was scary though.
SPEAKER_03Like, yeah. Terrifying.
SPEAKER_01I it was still don't ride bikes. Yeah, it's scary riding new bike things. Once okay, so let me just give our listeners because we do have some of the the olds listen to our podcast, and they might not you might not have come across their desk. They they might actually is mom's on TikTok. Uh I don't know if she is. Anyway, no, she is. I sent her TikToks. Okay. Um anyway, okay. Lane maybe I'll like explain through my personal encounter with because here's the thing. Hannah and I have talked about Strava before. We don't frequent Strava. So I I'm nervous to talk about Strava again. People really people came after Hannah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I did just get a comment yesterday last night that I was like, well that one was somebody commented.
SPEAKER_02So we had this like anytime any of our like little clips make it out into like the real world, beyond the people who like I know what happens.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you know, one guy was like, he said something about how it doesn't look like you've ever walked a mile any of the days. Maybe you should use it as motivation. Isn't that crazy? I was like, I'd like you to know that I'm an incredible walker. Yeah, um, I can only have walked a couple of miles most days. Isn't that crazy? That's insane. So I'm like, I'll be really careful about what I say about people's fucking sacred teachers. So stupid people are so stupid.
SPEAKER_01On one of the uh reels that went viral about like the Rafa Corfessionals, I was very visibly pregnant and in spandex, and someone was like, it looks like she needs to lose some weight, and maybe then she'll make it. And I was like, actually respond, I was like, bro, I'm eight months pregnant in this. How do you feel now? I can't wait to hear about like your experience. But we should replay. Okay, set the stage. Let me let me set the stage. So you came across my desk on my TikTok that I was very proud of never seeing any cycling on. And this funny as fuck girl is like talking so much mad shit. And I I was I didn't even know what you were about to do, but I was like, I love this. I'm proud of dropping bars. But like only men?
SPEAKER_00Is it only men that are no?
SPEAKER_01I started with two women. Okay, yeah, but even funnier when it's a dude. Really appreciates the guys. Yeah. So like when I saw, I can't even remember which it doesn't actually, it doesn't even matter which dude it was. You were like talking shit on some dude, and I was like, I mean, I love her. Full spandex on her bike, on her bike, and she's like talking to the camera. Like I like it's it's men who have KOMs on certain segments on this app called Strava. K O M is king of mountain, yeah. Of the mountain. Well, they're missing a letter. Yes, they are missing. Go ahead. That is funny. Cough em Yeah. Okay, so so she's talking shit on this dude who has this current KOM on the the online rankings, and she's like, I'm gonna go take it from him. And then you have the like shark sound when and like a nice view of your tush. Yeah. The Jaws, sorry, the shark sound. Jaws, you know the sound sharks. Oh my god, Jaws. Didn't didn't and then it's a little sped-up version, and then it cuts to you successfully at the finish of a segment taking the KOM, dethroning these dudes, and then throwing something heavy, and then usually talking more shit. Yeah, and then sometimes like humping an object. And and it had millions of views, and it was so funny because I'm like, nothing in cycling is ever that funny to me. Honestly, that's why we started this podcast because I was like, wow, there's a big gap here, and I feel like you're now part of our crew of elite, funny people in the world of cyclones. Incredibly complimentary of yourself.
SPEAKER_00Us of us.
SPEAKER_01Anyone mean one and then you just sort of and so and then a friend sent me another one, and then I was like, oh, this girl's awesome. And then I followed you on Instagram, and I don't I don't follow anything on Stra I never look at Strava, so I don't follow you on Strava, probably, but I also don't follow anyone. But then I started seeing more and more of your clips, and then and then how I really know you made it to the olds is because I have a group uh Instagram chat with all my like college guy friends, I think it's called Dick Wads, and uh you made it onto that, and I was like, She made it, we have to have her on the podcast. All the levels. Wait, how did it start?
SPEAKER_03Yeah. So we saw there's an Australian runner who was taking Strabo Crowns and showed it to me, and uh he was like, You could do this, like this is like literally your energy. It is, and and then I like I was like, I could do that.
SPEAKER_02I was like, I could totally do that. But like some people would maybe do it quietly, but what I like is that like you you don't just quietly.
SPEAKER_01But that's the thing, like some athletes would just do that, but for like the and I don't whatever, even if it's like ego for you, but they would just like not know how to like have the funny component with it, and it's so over the top, and like which is so funny, yeah.
SPEAKER_03And that's like and also like I know it is like stupid at its like core, which is why it's fun to be like so over the top.
SPEAKER_01It's actually so hard to do, yeah. Like comedy is like completely satirical. I know, and so have you ran into anyone that like doesn't get that?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, every day. Yeah, they are messaging me every day. Have you done this? I learned they messaged the guys who I bone, like who I take the crowns from, they will like because I took one from my like good friend Austin, and he was we rode together the other day, and he was like, Oh, people like the incels are messaging me to put you in your place. And I was like, Whoa, like I didn't even know that was happening.
SPEAKER_00That is like they can't even do it, so they're like, No, no, buddy, you gotta stand up for yourself. No, that's what they're saying.
SPEAKER_01You know the craziest thing, like, even my friend, like that that Dickwad's group chat. Some of the chatter was like, Oh, there's it was when you took um Quinn's uh K O M here. And I literally, I was like, this is the best thing on the I think I commented that. Like, this is yeah, this is like the. I think you were like, I think some of your crowns uh like fell because one of yours went like in route. I was I wasn't targeting you. Oh, so it just fell because you were Lassato pedal. It was on the way. I was like, you know what? I'm willing to gift that. Um, no, I was like, it this is so awesome. And then I was like really irritated because they were like, there's no way like she could have taken a flat KOM from Quinn. And I was like, Yeah, there is. You could yeah, she did.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, well then it like goes to Reddit. Like that goes on Reddit. There's like been like three Reddit threads about this same stuff, and they're always like deep diving into my data. And like I had when I took steps, my power meter. Yeah, which one did you take? I took like it was like a s in the middle of a climb that he did on like a 160-mile ride. And it was like a five-minute segment.
SPEAKER_01And still really in the tour right now, you know.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and like also just like not much shit to talk about that guy because everyone loves it. And his parents are awesome. I can hear this, but I'm a huge fan, Seth. We all are a huge Sep fan. Um, but I don't know him. But my power meter, like, this is what gets on Reddit. Like, my power meter cut out in the middle of that effort, and someone was like, she grabbed onto a car. Jesus Christ. And I was like, uh-uh, like heart rate continues to go up and speed stays the same. I was like, if I grabbed onto a car, you idiot, my heart rate would not keep going up. So like and like, you know, I don't have to defend myself, but I do get a little bit irritated.
SPEAKER_01You do sometimes you do.
SPEAKER_03I too I do sometimes defend myself because I'm like yeah, like who's like I think baseline, this is I wouldn't have thought about that report. I'm like, oh yeah, duh.
SPEAKER_01I also feel like the best like defense to all of this is like you're looking at my stuff and you are taking the time to comment it and like but also post it on Reddit and also the coolest part of that is that it just helps you in this like weird new, like I don't even want to call it career, but like you are bullying up to a point that like I mean you have an agent now. Yeah, you're an agent. Yeah, shout out Reagan. Yeah, shout out Reagan. Um, so but and she's not even like a bike-specific agent for those cyclists who are listening to the pod. This is like you've actually made it beyond it's an influencer. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03What's what's the come up? So funny. Oh, this has been like three and a half months total, this whole thing. And she's I'm going to bed. I'm going to bed every night. Sorry, sorry, but she's like millions of I'm so excited.
SPEAKER_00Dab your nose and let her talk.
SPEAKER_03Every night I go to bed and I'm like, I must have died in February or March, and like I'm just living like a psychosis like dream state. Oh, yeah. Because like this is the craziest thing that's ever happened. Really? Yeah. Like I can't even I I have a finance career, corporate finance. I'm like in financial modeling. Like I went to school for finance and like it seems really simple. I'm working in tech. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Do you have a job?
SPEAKER_03Uh yeah, I'm the CFO of Carbs Fuel. So like in conjunction with this, it was like the stars like all lined at once because um I was able to leave my corporate job and be full-time CFO of Carbs Fuel because the company's doing really well. Um go carbs. And thank, yeah, go carbs. I know I pulled up today and was like, I drove the van here.
SPEAKER_02Driving a vehicle that just says carbs on it. And then having somebody like me get out of the car would be people be like, maybe we can be like fucking pizza. Maybe carbs. Maybe no carbs. Maybe it's drama.
SPEAKER_04Maybe not drama.
SPEAKER_00So it takes a certain kind of person to be able to drive a and then let her talk.
SPEAKER_03Um but like in the lead up, so like starting last fall, I was I was a cat four on the road, and like I went to Green Mountain Stage Race, which is an awesome stage race uh for road cycling in the US. It's in Vermont. Um, and I like I was like, I'm gonna, I've never raced before. I was like, and like I was like starting to post just like stupid stuff on my Instagram, um, because I had 300 followers and it was like my family and Gabe's family and like our cycling friends. So I was like just shit posting like memes that I made on Canva and getting like 20 likes. You can scroll back, they're all there, and I still think they're hilarious. I'm sure they are, yeah. And they deserve, you know, they deserve their day in the sun at some point.
SPEAKER_01I think their day has come.
SPEAKER_03And so like I loved Green Mountain. I I won uh the fours, not too cracked. And uh then I I was like, oh, I'm gonna like do some road racing. So then in the winter, we like went to Calpey in Spain and like did like a you know cycling trip, and I was like continuing just like my run of posting like just garbage on my page, which like for a few people they thought it was like that's really funny. And then at the beginning of this year, I did um some stage races in Arizona in February, and like we knew like going back to the bone, like name renaming my Instagram. We knew last year that I would be road racing, and so like some people would like look up my name on Instagram, but we knew we were getting married this year, so I was like, I don't like changing my last name and then not being findable on the internet, like a whole other topic of like losing your like searchability if you change your last name. Yeah, which like I have decided to like change my last name, which I'm like very excited about, but in the meantime, like the transition period, it's like we we are like we need a new name for your Instagram. I was like, oh, my nickname as a kid was Bones, and I was like Laney, like my grandparents called me Laney Bones. And that's so cute. We were like, oh, this actually works in like so many ways. So then yeah, so then in like March, like along this, I was getting faster. Yeah, because I was like doing more like kind of structured training. Boning. I was doing starting to do more boning. And we uh so going back to like this this kind of like style of posting of like it's like kind of an irrelevant segment. Like I'm not taking like Flagstaff Mountain. Yeah, sure. Like if I did, I would get some world tour team. Totally. Yeah, it doesn't actually matter the segment. It's like literally about the bit.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, exactly. That's what that's what I was trying to explain poorly. Like, I I saw you and like legitimately did not fucking care what segment you took. I just liked everything else that you did.
SPEAKER_03And some are like it's like so obscure. Like I've taken just like a neighborhood road from Tommy D, and like it's like in his neighborhood. That's like anything I can get.
SPEAKER_00I'll get even funnier.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's funnier if it's super random. Um, and so then we did a few for women, and the one that went like the one that did really well. I took shout out Kate Yancey. I took your crown, and she's a local mom in Golden, and I still would like to hang out with you in real life, Kate, if you're listening to this. But her daughter, this was like one of the funniest nights. Her daughter must have seen it scrolling because it was like hitting the algorithm. Her daughter's like, oh my god, that's my mom in the comments. And then I think it like went to their family group chat, and it and then another one's like, that's my like aunt. And then it's like, this is my like sister, this is my friend's mom. And I was like in the golden algorithm so hard that I like got around their whole family, like the whole family was in the comments sharing their relationship. And I was I messaged Kate after and I was like, I did not mean to put you on blast this hard. Like, I'm talking shit. I'm not not really for the first ones. Like oh the thing is I didn't know anything personally about these people, so I couldn't really like get into anything. It was like so blanket.
SPEAKER_02Who did you first start talking shit to?
SPEAKER_03Well, can't say can't. There was one, there was one that I did while at Sea Otter. Okay, because I was there for the expo anyway. Yeah. Dang it, I could have met you. We were we were in the same vicinity. Yeah, yeah. Well, here we are. Here we are. Uh and that one went like mega viral. And so the reason I switched to doing men was because in the comments of the women's videos, they there were a few dudes that were like, what's the men's time? But you could never smoke that. And they were like, not, you know, oh wait till you can beat the man's time. And I was like, oh fine, great, done. I was like, what if hold my beer? Yeah. I was like, okay, here's my here's my career. I was like, thanks.
SPEAKER_01So smart. Yeah. And so I like And of course that like went viral because we love to see it. And if you don't, then you're a little bitch.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and I'm not like, I'm not like I hate men to my core, but like it is like a funnier setup. It's a funnier setup. I like how sensitive they are about it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I think that like, and this is something that I don't think you well, this is why you were a great addition onto this podcast. Because like I just I appreciate, because I've been in the world of professional athletics for over a decade now. I just really think the world needs that world specifically needs more satire and fun like because it's really not that serious.
SPEAKER_02It's really not on a bicycle. Like I really like it is my career.
SPEAKER_01It is it like you can do a good job and like be fast. Sure, but it's still a hobby sport. It is. No, I know, no, I know. I think it's not that serious.
SPEAKER_00So I love when people can like make it funny and put people on blast.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, seriously but it takes like a certain art uh to to do it well, and I feel like you have like there's a lot of layers like to it that I think is I think that's why you have had the success that you have because energy and like also like I like I love hearing like the story like behind like how it all started because it's not like I mean you did sort of like stumble into it a little bit, but it was intentional and like you liked the that I don't know, I just appreciate the like the trajectory that got you here. And then it happened quickly afterwards.
SPEAKER_03Oh yeah, and then it all just like went real quick. Like I got I gained like 30,000 followers in like a couple days. Oh my god. Yeah, and then and then it was like you're my favorite influencer, and I was like, Influencer And then at the beginning I was like, y'all will follow anyone these days. Yeah, and uh then I was like I guess I'll keep doing them. Like it's it's not that hard. Like I'm out there riding my bike. And like we had like an idea pretty quickly of like who which men would be like a good target in terms of like if I have personal beef with them, who would still take it like decently well, maybe, or who's like famous in the cycling world, who would get like notoriety, but also the algorithm and the people who are watching it, I don't think they care if it's a famous athlete. Definitely. No, I think they're like, I want to see the niche personal beef.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like but then it's also smart, like Danny Um Summer Danny Summerhill. Yeah, I remember that name from when I started racing Cyclocrest. Well, I couldn't remember. I was like, it's not Bill. Anyway, I like there's certain people that if you're in the like niche sport, a hobby sport, uh, and you know they're like, oh, this is awesome. Like that you're taking his specific tail.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, if you're it's like kind of like a wink. Like, I watch all the races. Like, I have like a flow bike subscription. I watch all the world tour races, I watch cyclocross, like I watch the disciplines I've never done in my life, and so I like have like a nerdy knowledge of this, and I like can use it in fun ways that also reaches people who don't care about cycling. Yeah, and like I've been messaged like yesterday, I got a message that was like, I bought a bike this week and I'm like getting into cycling, and I'm like that's so sick. Actually, so cool. Yeah, and I want women to get on bikes, like it is such a cool sport, and the girls that I've met riding bikes are like such good friends of mine now, and it's just like is a great way to make a community. So in a very wholesome way, yeah, there's like a lot behind it, but like surface level, see it's wholesome, it's it's stupid.
SPEAKER_00Well, I keep coming back to what we were talking about in the kitchen where it was like, wait, hold it. That you're talking about like Lainey Bones being like a WWE like wrestling character. Like it is that is a persona. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_03Like, talk more about that. Yeah, like because this has become such a thing. I like I talk about bones like she's not me. Perfect. I love that. That's what you want. Yeah, like bones get the luchador mask. Yeah, like bones will fuck you up. And like it's good for me to like separate, like, this is like a character. Yeah, it like it makes sense that I'm doing this though. Like, my parents are not surprised that this is me on the internet because like I am like kind of fiery as a person, and like I have like one side of beef with people who like don't know it, just like and that drives me to like fight out there, and like I don't actually dislike any of these people, but like I just kind of am that way, and like it's not a shock that this has come like out of my personality, but Bones is definitely a WWE persona. Like, I have to be like so over the top, but I have to have a baseline level of strength to like do these KOMs. Yeah, and so like there's like a mix like into that.
SPEAKER_01Like, I it's actually like yes, it's really cool and very funny. Also, at the same time, it's really impressive like athletically. It is like I mean, yes, sure, like you might have taken steps in the middle of his like you know, six hour break.
SPEAKER_03Oh, but I went all out.
SPEAKER_01We took it by a lot. But you really got him.
SPEAKER_03You got him. I don't think he ever saw it. He won a stage of the Vuelta the next day or the Jiro. I'm sure he saw the Jiro.
SPEAKER_01I'm sure he was putting it on. But it also like I do love that, like, I mean, it does take athl like true athleticism, and I think that sorry, I'm also taking my socks off. I just watched your little monkey feet take those off. I know I just I had to call it out before Hannah did. Oh my god, I'm so hot. It is really quite toast. Should we get a chicken? Should we get in our bikinis now? Make us really go line to sponsor this. Yeah, make us really go viral. Do you need a second? No. You you just asked- I no, I'm trying to remember what I was talking about. About how impressive it actually is. Oh, like the athletic component. Yeah, the athletic component and also I actually am. Yeah, like it's like I love racing, I love competition, and I love professional sport, but I also just like don't care about like numbers or KOMs or QMs, and like the fact that I don't know, that you've brought someone like me and Hannah into that side of like the sport. And also like I feel like it's sort of what you're making fun of on Strava is also like you're sort of taking seriously a little bit, but like I don't know, I just I I really appreciate like the nuance with all of it because like I you know, I first got on Strava when we had I was on a team with Sep, actually, a mountain bike team before he was, you know, the SEP who he is now, and they made us get Stravas and like did media training with and I remember like you know, I don't even think I had a computer to like record anything on Strava. I think it was all manual like entry at that or something anyway.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I cannot picture you doing that. I don't think I did.
SPEAKER_01I cannot imagine you and I certainly didn't do it well, but I remember like I hated when my like someone would take a QOM and I was like, oh, this isn't fun for me. Like I'm too competitive. I don't like that. I don't like this at all. But I go ahead.
SPEAKER_00Have people gone back and like if you've taken their KOM or QM, have they gone back to re-retake it?
SPEAKER_03Um Colby Simmons just took Quinn's back and um his brother. Oh, okay. He he went really fast.
SPEAKER_04It's yours. I'm not gonna buy great.
SPEAKER_01And for Durango people, it was like a segment on La Posta, which it was really impressive when you took it, because that is oftentimes um a Tuesday night worlds ride.
SPEAKER_03I joined that last night. It was very hard. I not for the whole thing. Oh, okay. Well there was I did La Posta with them.
SPEAKER_01Oh, crazy. There was a guy that got hit last night. Last night? Oh my god. Yeah, he's okay. But yeah, it was really I actually I was gonna text you about it, and I was like, I'm not gonna stress her out. Okay. So I hope he's okay. Yeah, he's okay. But it was really scary, it was actually really fucked up.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Anyway. So somebody so they are taking uh yeah, and then someone, so the Danny segment, someone took it. Like sometimes like another person, because they'll see this, they'll go take it, and then Danny took it back. Um and it's it's really fast now. I can't get that one. Um but he's offered to like lead me out for other segments. So now I kind of have like an army, which is really unexpected and fun. Of like the people who are around me, if I take their stuff and they're like not like currently racing the Tour de France and like too busy. Yeah, like I can probably message them to like help me in some ways, which is fine.
SPEAKER_01So, where do you see this going? Like, what is your what do you have goals with it? Are you just gonna kind of evolve naturally? Or what do you what are you thinking? Yeah, ooh.
SPEAKER_03I uh I never really plan much of my career at all, like from my finance career even. But you planned your last name stomping. But I didn't plan that like really because it seems like you are in fact a planner. Um, it would be cool to like race somewhat professionally. Yeah. And I only race road. I'm trying to get a gravel bike because I think that would actually like suit my you guys hear that? She's like a lot taller than Sarah. Size uh 54, please. Oh, there you go. Okay, all right. Uh I think gravel racing would suit like my um like my engine. Yeah. Um like the endurance. Yes, yes. The like the road racing is fine. Like, I'm gonna do uh Philly cycling classic and then Tour de Gatineau this year. So I have like a couple more races, but I I also like to goof around.
SPEAKER_01So are you gonna keep the carbs job?
SPEAKER_03Yes, I am gonna continue CFO-ing for carbs. Um it's fun to have like our own business that's like blossoming. Yeah, that's cool. Uh, but other than that, I'm gonna I mean, this is so new that I'm not like I'm not 10 steps ahead. No, it's crazy.
SPEAKER_01It really it's it's wild to see how like going viral like that, how quickly it happens. I mean, I've watched it on TikTok. Like, I was just thinking about the demure girl the other day, like gone. I was thinking about her too. Really? Yeah, maybe she's not, but like I remember she tried to like capitalize and like do some other stuff. We all were, yeah. And like just rooting for you. We were rooting for you.
SPEAKER_02Come on for you guys. That was a tie red reference. No? Nobody? America's an oxlow model? No, got it. Okay, we can talk about summer house. Oh, I've just been waiting to talk about summer.
SPEAKER_00Wait, no, but I was just thinking about like all of this and like the the sense of being an influencer. Like, what an interesting weird career because you you don't get to plan for it. Like it either happens and you figure out and you harness it and you like surf and you ride the wave and figure it out. Sure, yeah.
SPEAKER_03But like how I mean, how do you how do you harness it? Well, I've I've also learned okay, finance background. I've been appalled at what people make as a professional cyclist in the US, like in the domestic scene. Because it's low or high. Oh my god, it's it's not it's it's how do people do it? Like we're not supporting the women and men who are like training 20 hours a week. Yeah, and like so. I'm looking at that and I'm like, whoa, like, I can't live off that. Um I mean, I'm sure there are different people making different amounts, but like what I would make, not not livable.
SPEAKER_01Oh, totally. I mean, I see it it's sort of starting to happen in gravel too. Like, you know, you have the like top percentage of people making enough, and then yeah, it's really we need the we need the fight for scraps. Yeah, it's really a bummer.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Um, so yeah, we'll just wait for my like toilet paper ads.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, like it seems like that is the only way, and then but then it also seems like by being like a brand ambassador, whatever like how like that you actually make money doing that. Like people can and I'm not talking about like in the cycling sphere, just in general, as like in the world.
SPEAKER_03There's like a lot there's a lot more money in influencer. Yeah, which is like, oh my god, so much easier. Like, I'm not risking my life like people do in races. Yeah, yeah. Um I mean, do you still have the the desire to race? Yeah, yeah, yeah. If Lauren Stevens is listening to this, I'm super excited and I will be ready for Philly.
SPEAKER_01And go. Oh, you're are you gonna race over?
SPEAKER_03I've been guestwriting on her team. Shout out. Do you have to wear those stupid things? Uh oh yeah.
SPEAKER_02God damn it. And uh wait, I'm sorry, what stupid things? Sorry, I zoned out for half a second.
SPEAKER_03I put mine on and I was like, what is it?
SPEAKER_02It's like over like a little ear radio. It's like an ear radio.
SPEAKER_03It's literally a Bluetooth radio that clips on the helmet strap. And they're gonna be asking, yeah, walkie-talkies. They're talking to each other.
SPEAKER_01It's about this big. The size of the microphone. It's really funny. Uh the deck isn't quite good.
SPEAKER_03I do get to use those, and then I get to like I get to like be told, like, Lainey, get off the front, and I'm like, okay.
SPEAKER_01That's what I was here for. Like, Laney, take the QOM up there. Go give it.
SPEAKER_03Lainey, get me to the climb. That's why you're here. Yeah, just to, you know, if I'm gonna like tell the teams, I'm really good at getting you to a climb, I will be the road is so sick.
SPEAKER_01It's such a bummer that in the US there's like support. And like, I hope like uh the Kate Courtney trajectory is like so insane. Like that's not like a normal trajectory at all. Very talented. And super lucky to like have just gotten a call from like the top women's world tour team. Yeah. But also, like, I hope like the the positive side of that is that it sheds a light on like what a cool like trajectory going through like continental road into world tour could be for Americans. Yeah, yeah. And that's hard to do. And that's hard to do. And Kate, you know, I've talked to people at USA Cycling. Kate has this um unique ability in the world of cycling. Um, they said there's two people that have been extraordinarily valuable uh as American cyclists, and it's Lance Armstrong and Kate Courtney, and and inspiring people to ride. I mean, Lance Armstrong also fucked it up. Has some downfalls, yeah. I know. I came home and I was like, oh his because I was like watching the tour stage from this morning and I took Norman on a walk and I forgot to turn the TV on. Oh, the move was on. And then the move came. I was like, no, I'm not gonna give him a view. The move. I just think of a belly. I was just gonna say the same thing.
SPEAKER_00I was like, that's just what happens every morning. We we talked over. An episode of the move real quick. I'll be out in ten.
SPEAKER_01I'm sorry. We talk shit just fewer people hear us. So we don't get as many like We're not good at harnessing the Yeah. We yeah, we're bad at social media.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, we really I I do have a Lance uh crown that is on the list. Oh, good. With that you've got her to support it's gonna come at some point. Where is it? I don't want to disclose because someone could go make it too hard for me.
SPEAKER_02She's media trained. Yeah. How did you get so media trained quickly? Did you grow up on uh what's it? Tallers and suits?
SPEAKER_03Yes! Reality TV No, but watch PB at Rocky Mountain PBS soon. I'll be on there. Lady is so famous.
SPEAKER_02What are you doing on Rocky Mountain PBS?
SPEAKER_03I think they want to see. I just met with them last week for like an intro. Uh and I was like, my mom and dad and my grandma and grandpa are going to love this. And that's actually all we can do. They'll be so happy I quit my finance show.
SPEAKER_01I've made it! Okay, you said something earlier that I really love. Like you said that your parents are like aren't surprised that you're really good at this.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I've been like a little shit my whole life. You have siblings? Uh older brother. Okay. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. But I just think that that's always such a good sign that like your parents know you the best in a lot of ways. And I think it's just a cool thing that you've like landed yourself. And they're like, you have a lot of creativity. Like you can take this. Yeah, it's fun. You can I mean, are you allowed to talk about you going to the Tour de France Femme?
SPEAKER_03We can we can run this by Sophie at Rafa if we need to. Okay.
SPEAKER_00Um let's talk about it, and then if we have to clip it, we can't clip it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I'm gonna get to go to the Vantu stage at the Tour de France with Rafa and Zwift. And um When is that? Like very soon. I was gonna say, isn't that happening? Like August 5th through 9th is when I'll be with them. Oh my god. Yeah, and then I'm trying to probably get to go to the Zwift party at the closing, like closing day. And I was like, I'm gonna be like throw like what do I wear to the Zwift party at the Tour de France?
SPEAKER_02I don't feel like you have to wear anything impressive, right? It's like all athletes. It's like full Rafa sweats. Okay, I actually you should get into the whole W. I I'm stuck on the W. I think you should wear a singlet.
SPEAKER_01Do you want my luchador mask? Yeah, you can wear it. Actually, I have a lot of costumes we can look for. We could go to a costume box. Okay, okay, good. It smells weird, but there's some.
SPEAKER_03Have you heard of the um the map party at Sea Otter? Has anyone like apparently this is like my third Sea Otter as a vendor. Maybe this is among the vendors. Oh. I'm on the other side. And they're like, You're on all the sides. I can get you into the map party. Oh, actually, I do know about the map party. And every day I'd be hearing from someone else, they're like, I heard about the map party. I want to hear about the map. It's at 10 p.m.
SPEAKER_01And I was like, too late. Brian Roscoe went to the map party. And Dylan and I teased him. We're like, whoa, someone's in their 20s. Wait, what is it?
SPEAKER_03Like it's just like the end of Sea Otter party that map, like the clothing brand, like cycling brand, throws. And then yesterday I was laughing. I was like, you're at the map party at Sea Otter? I'm at the Zwift party.
SPEAKER_02We are! That I shouldn't be here. Yeah, I actually shouldn't be in this room because I feel like none of this stuff is you know. You're not one of us. I'm not one of us. No, no, no, no.
SPEAKER_01I'm not one of us. How swollen my feet are. Um, okay, so you're going to France. Yeah, I'm going to France. I've never been to France. Yes. Can you get me a polka dot shirt?
SPEAKER_03I heard they throw those things out like crazy. I'm going to be I'm going to be wearing 25 to 10. And that's what you wear to the party. Like swagged out. I want like they throw glasses, like lanyards. Oh, all of that. Just getting swagged. Yeah, and that's like the best part is like, like, they were gonna have Kate Courtney go. I don't know if we might need to cut that, but like, I don't know if she's going because she's now like on one of the teams that's riding. We think she's gonna be in it. Well, I she could win it. And so I was like, oh, I'm not like I'm not the pro athlete. I'm the funny one.
SPEAKER_00Wait, so it was Kate Courtney or you?
SPEAKER_03And they were like And and you. Yeah, and I was like, oh, I see the dynamic. Like, I'm making the jokes. You're the personality hire.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and I was like, that is like best job. Ever. Yeah. And you're stoked that you're the personality hire. Yeah. Sounds like way more fun.
SPEAKER_03You do sometimes get laid off if you're the personality.
SPEAKER_01But it's okay.
SPEAKER_03But you know what they written and then they really miss you. Yeah, and then the team falls apart. Like my team, my team's still texting me today. They're like, we hate it here. I'm like, yeah, me, I hated it there too.
SPEAKER_01Sounds like they need some personality. Yeah, they're like, you really went viral. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Have you had anyone who's like, you've changed. You've changed since you know. But like people from high school, I'm also really hot. People from high school have been texting me and like they're finding it. And I like had some tumultuous periods in high school with different friend groups. We all did. Yeah, and I was like, now you're coming back. Yeah. Oh, now you're crawling. Didn't think I was cool, you thought I was weird.
SPEAKER_01And I'm still weird.
SPEAKER_02Did you talk about Jimothy? We talked about Jimothy on uh last week. Uh but I'd love to hear your thoughts.
SPEAKER_01Delone disarmaments that Norman looked like Jimothy this week.
SPEAKER_03I have a family of raccoons in my backyard. And like the babies, I've been watching them grow. Oh and uh my neighbors How are their spines looking? They're all normal.
SPEAKER_02They all look great.
SPEAKER_03They all look pretty normal.
SPEAKER_01Uh but I I love raccoons. They're so cute. They're so cute. Yeah. The only time they do kind of freak me out is when they stand up on their feet and then just look at you.
SPEAKER_00There was one. Do you remember when I lived in the house? Uh there was like a tree in the front yard, and there was one raccoon that would just sit and stare into the house, and we all joked that it was just sitting there, just like jacking off, watching into the window.
SPEAKER_02They're getting really sentient. Yeah. Oh no, that raccoon's really paying attention. He really liked that shirt you put on. And that one that you took off. Do it again. Just a creepy little raccoon there. Jimothy in the tree. Thanks for sponsoring this episode, Rafa. Here's my hope is that like if we have sponsors like Rafa and like Garmin.
SPEAKER_00They may not because they probably don't listen. And that's best case scenario. Garmin listens. But you're getting sponsors and you drop the F bomb all the time. And you say that you can't.
SPEAKER_03But I'm like, but it's not my brand.
SPEAKER_02Exactly.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03Where did the throwing of the heavy things come from? I was just thinking of like cartoonish celebrations and like uh Doodle Bob. Remember Doodlebob from SpongeBob? Nope.
SPEAKER_00That sounds like you are younger than Spongebob.
SPEAKER_02Have you ever seen an episode of the Rugracks? Yes, I have. Have you ever seen the dad? Chabet two pickles. It's super hot.
SPEAKER_04So hot. Hear me out.
SPEAKER_03But I was picturing like, if anyone knows Doodle Bob, you go like Mahoy Minoy is and he like has this like big pencil. And then I was just have always loved like the picture of like throwing like a big log in celebration. And uh just normal. There it is.
SPEAKER_01Super normal.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and like in our backyard, we have like just a bunch of random like pavers and like bricks that have just been there for 50 years. And so I was like throwing them around the yard. They're still in the exact same places I threw them. I will I don't pick them up. I think it's like extra dramatic effect. It's really, really it's almost like you guys cannot think I'm taking this that seriously if I'm then throwing a tree branch. Yeah, or like I think like a bag of sand on one of three. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like it's not like that's like the cherry on top. And then, well, the humping. Yeah, and where did the humping come from?
SPEAKER_01Pillows Lenny. Pellet the humping grandma and grandpa who definitely listened to our podcast.
SPEAKER_02Mimi and Papa. Mimi and Papa. Shout out. Shout out to the show. Shout out, Mimi Papa. Go ahead and fan. Fan and talk about the humping.
SPEAKER_03No. Gabe, like my husband will like direct me from behind the iPhone.
SPEAKER_02He's behind the iPhone going, okay, honey, no. That's not that cute. He's like, no, mom something.
SPEAKER_00And like I'm sorry, I just have this perfect picture of like uh mean girls, like Amy Porter the mom. It's Regina George's mom.
SPEAKER_03And he's so funny.
SPEAKER_00The velure tracksuit is what he needs.
SPEAKER_03He mouths the lines to me. Stop. Yeah, because like we'll have some things where like he's like a state before, yeah, and before we'll like film, we're like, okay, this is kind of what we want to say. And then he's like mouthing it. And well, the first time I noticed that, I was like, this is crazy.
SPEAKER_02That's the craziest thing about all of this. Hold on. You need to pump something. You need somebody filming the behind the scenes because that's what I want to do. PBS is there to be filming for tomorrow.
SPEAKER_01The rate you're going. You'll have a full camera crew filming you guys with the iPhone.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and then when we I like twerked on like the Buffalo Bill Museum Craig's high list. I thought your career's incredible. He's like, go twerk on that. And I was like, Roger. Like, cars will drive by, and he's like, Do you care? He's like, I'll wait. And I was like, I don't give a fuck anymore. Like, get the shot.
SPEAKER_01Mimi and Papa are so proud. We are so proud. We are Mimi and Papa. It's a hard job. Someone's got to be a good idea. It is not meant for everyone.
SPEAKER_03No, no, no, no. And like yesterday morning, we like got the confirmation that like I'm going into Durango. And then I was like, I was like, oh, perfect, because we saw some stuff on Strava that just like didn't sit right. And I was like, I gotta go fix something over there. And like it was like a six and a half hour drive or six hour drive from our house. So I was like, not everyone can just like Tuesday Tuesday morning be like pack up, get a cat sitter, and then we're on our way to go fix Strava. Can you talk about the Strava segments you just did?
SPEAKER_01This comes out. We don't know when this will come out. Yeah, I talked to I talked to Jimmy a little bit about it. We can release it um Jimothy. Jimothy. Rafa Jimothy. Um we can release it uh whenever we want, ideally, but I kind of want it to be like relevant, so I don't know when the Rafa thing goes live.
SPEAKER_03Um I'm posting the women's one tomorrow. Oh, yeah, we're good. And possibly the Payson one tonight if I get like an okay. Oh, cool. So we can talk about that then. Because I'll post it really quickly. Yeah, and this won't come out until I was like, wouldn't it be funny if he like because he's gonna get the uh-oh email like right now?
SPEAKER_01Wait, you get an uh-oh email if somebody takes your uh oh. I did learn you can take those off of your email.
SPEAKER_03Your course record's been taken by Ladybones, and so I thought we were gonna record at his house, and I was like, oh my god, he's gonna get he's gonna know I've already come for him while I'm in his house. And I was like, he's gonna hop on the bike. I was like, shit.
SPEAKER_01Damn. I know when you told me that, I was like, oh, we should have just done it at his house.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so we got him this morning. Um congrats. Thank you. It was it was raining. You're gonna see in this reel, I'm like a wet rat. Like I had to pour my shoes out out there.
SPEAKER_01Like and we get some crazy spot rainstorm.
SPEAKER_03It just like immediately didn't even rain.
SPEAKER_01And we were like freezing. Um I'm so jealous. Remember when you were cold? Remember what that cold feeling feels like? Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Can you see? Describe it to me. Um, but yeah, we we boned Payson today and it was really close. On Whitehorse? No, on um, I think it's like his neighborhood. Oh, see, you would have already been there. Oh shit. Yeah. Um in your website, but it was really close. I was like waterlogged at that point, and um I got like we were going for it, and I had an idea of like how hard I had to go. It was six minutes. And like that's hard. Yeah. That's a long effort. I already had done a 20-minute effort, so I was like, also, my coach is definitely like, what the fuck are you doing out here? Because I like have not. Well, like today and yesterday have not done the plan. I'm trying to stick to the plan. But your coaching plan.
SPEAKER_01Yes, my training peaks plan. And Strava hunting is not part of your plan. I'm trying to fit it into the plan. It has to be part of your plan.
SPEAKER_03It has to be this. He knows, he knows. Um, I gotta call him or text him or something to explain myself. I'm sure he's like, she was Bri hunting. He was like, I gave you like over-under. This is not over-under. 20-minute VO2 effort. Cool. Okay, sports girls. We were getting close to the top of the climb, and like Gabe was like behind me or like next to me, because like there's I mean, you can't even draft on a climb like that. Like, I was not behind him, and he was like looking back at me, he's like, How much power are you doing? We're gonna like miss it. And like he his power meter wasn't working, so he was just going by feel. Uh-huh. Because he knows kind of like if he's doing this, I'm probably doing this. And like my threshold is like, he he knows how I'm probably feeling. And so like he looked at me, he's like, You really need to kick it right now. Oh shit. And I like get, I was like already in a dark place, and I was like, I know.
SPEAKER_02He was like, that's the top. Yeah, you might have to do that sound over here.
SPEAKER_03Exactly. And like, we got to the top, and he was like, I don't think he got it. And I was like, like, we have driven, we're gonna do like a 12-round trip for this. What happens if you don't get a segment? It hasn't happened yet. I knew it. It hasn't happened yet. And he was like, because he lapped his his Wahoo or Garmin, sponsored by Garmin, and he lapped his Wahoo when we started it, and he he was like, it's gonna be like one second yay or nay. And I was like, shit, because like I'm not doing this again. Like I already blew up my training plan for this today. Like, I gotta get back on track tomorrow. So this was like kind of the highest stake, like I thought it was gonna be easier, but it it was like definitely not very chill. But you got it? By three seconds, yeah. That's the closest it's happened. I am a little offended. I will post if I don't get it though. You will post if you don't get it. I will post it, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, just hasn't happened. Just hasn't happened. It just hasn't happened yet. Both hasn't missed. We we have to wait. Um, but then you also targeted some women. Yes, so I'm really offended that I didn't end up being because I'm pregnant. But they didn't say that. Maybe that was an internal. Sure.
SPEAKER_00Hold on, parse that through.
SPEAKER_01I what are you talking about? Well, I was like, I know Jimmy told me, Jimothy, he was like, Yeah, she's targeting one of your QMs, and I was like, sick. And then I was like, Oh, I wonder where she's gonna go. And then I was asking you, like, if you were gonna target any women, and then I think I I I I'm sure it wasn't like just the pregnancy thing, but I'm like, if they felt bad for me because I'm pregnant and took my name off the list.
SPEAKER_03I think if it makes you feel bad, obviously don't know you're sure that Lauren, because like she was also in that post they did today, like she's in some of those photos. Yeah, and then um we've been racing each other this year, like on the road. So I've actually like become friends with her. Yeah, Lauren Agler, because she and I are like doing the same races and like we're usually awesome. She's awesome. We're usually around each other. She's a great mountain biker. Yes. And I feel like safe next to her in the race. Shout out, Lauren.
SPEAKER_01I do feel like it's a like badge of honor if you've gotten your well now, it's becoming that.
SPEAKER_03That's why like it's less, it's less like you've turned the table and more like come join the group.
SPEAKER_01But this is this is what's cool about like if you're a healthy person with Strava or like the FKT, like Haysen when he did the FKT thing on the white rim. Um I have a I said I said something about that today.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I can't wait.
SPEAKER_01But I I think also like the good like I love the satire that comes from it, but then also the cool thing is like it is supposed to like generate some excitement and like you should then try to go and like get it back and like beat someone else, or like you're seeing someone. It's a cool way to ch I I did get into Strava during the pandemic, like a lot of people did, because there wasn't any like good racing or motivation if you wanted to have a competitive outlet, but like it's also a cool way to like I mean I've tried to beat my own QOMs from like five years ago, and some of them are really hard.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and then you like respect your own former self. You're like, damn, that was really fast.
SPEAKER_01Or you're like, oh, I guess I'm yeah, has been.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, last year I got faster because there's the climb in Golden is uh Lookout Mountain. Emma said Fox Staff. Lookout mountain, and um it's t the QM is 20 minutes, and 20 minutes, two seconds, and it's really fast. It's beatable though. Now I'm saying this not to someone's gonna beat it. Um but like I was like keeping an eye on the leaderboard, and I was like, I knew Emma Langley, was she used to ride for EF. I've told her this in person, this won't be a surprise, but her time, I was like, damn, that's really fast. And I was like, I wonder how close I can get. And she was like fifth or sixth on the leaderboard because they've done races up it, it's like pretty fast. I think we raced it in college. Yeah, it's there's it's a pretty good leaderboard, like go to top 10. And so I was like, I've always thought she is like so fast, and this is exactly what like Roth was talking about in this campaign. And like I had her time like in my head, yeah, and I was like inching towards it and towards it and towards it, and so I that was like my benchmark, and now I'm like three seconds off of it, and I was like, I was like, that's sick. Like that's awesome. Respect her as an athlete so much that just being like in the vicinity of her time was like oh, I've like done something here. Totally. And like women, I think people get irritated, but they're like, don't pit women against each other. And it's not that, it's not that like Lauren, who I took a crown from today, is a really good racer, and like she has beat me in races, and I beat her in races, and like I think she's awesome, and like I want her, I want to be like her. Like, I want to be like you. That's the point.
SPEAKER_01That is the point of all of it. Uh, if you say don't pit women against women, then we don't have to be. Yeah, we are racing each other. We are literally competing against each other. It's like, yeah, it like it isn't that like one is better than the other once you get the crap. It's just like it's the process in which it takes to get there.
SPEAKER_03Oftentimes, like you'll like what you were just saying, you'll go for a segment and like if you or like just a climb around here, like you'll s realize how like fast the woman's time is. Like, if you don't get it, or if you do get it, you're like, damn, respect. Like that was like a full effort. Yeah, and I like see how fast they are now because I tried it.
SPEAKER_01It's super cool. I love I love that. And also, like, for those of us who have been highly competitive from a young age and like couldn't even do like Easter egg hunts and music. Don't even pull out the checkers. Don't even fucking think about shoots and ladders.
unknownNope.
SPEAKER_01Just fast enough.
SPEAKER_00I remember like jumping Sarah's pieces. Being like, uh-oh, I shouldn't have done like a double jump, you know, and just being like, fuck.
SPEAKER_02Sarah picked up the board with done play. It's like we're done playing.
SPEAKER_01I remember it being very painful as a kid to like learn how to be competitive and not have it like take from your identity. Oh, totally. And I think some adults haven't learned that lesson. Definitely. And might I suggest following Laney Bones?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and like we could get into what people comment and message me. Oh, let's get into it. I want to know. Like, I know. Like if things like start hitting the algorithm, like I'll know really quickly, because then I'll have just like the ugliest looking men I've ever seen in my life with their stupid profile picture, like just saying the meanest shit. Meanest shit. Yeah. And like they'll start commenting on my body, and like, and then they'll start saying, like, women in general, like well, you'll never beat a man at anything. And then they'll say, like, what I'm doing. They're like, I know you're faking it, you're a cheater. That's insane. I can see the motor in your bike. I was like, bro, I race this in a UCI race in April. Like, they have no idea. And you don't even know what the UCI is.
SPEAKER_01Like, I don't need to explain the US. You're too dumb to even explain this to me.
SPEAKER_03It's not even worth it. No, it's not. I'm getting like more immune to seeing the same things. And cool. I love that it's hard to do in that way. I'm like, not original. Like, try harder. And then I'll get like a meaner.
SPEAKER_01And then like, damn, got me. I sort of experienced that when I was like baiting all of the like mean commenters on the live stream at Unbound. I was like, damn, I'm really disappointed by this live stream.
SPEAKER_03I was in the live stream comments, yeah, not being an asshole, but I saw crazy shit. It was crazy, right? I'm like, and I think I said to Gabe, these are the same idiots who are messaging me. And like everyone has something to say. And sometimes it's not nice.
SPEAKER_01Imagine, like, there is um, I follow this uh woman, she was like a Nickelodeon star. Um, Christina, uh, what was her last name? Well, we're following her on I I don't like she was in the Drake and Josh era. Oh, okay. Um, but she's like she has a couple million followers on TikTok, and she's just like funny. Like, I don't I don't like halls and like PR hauls and reviews and stuff, but I just think she does it in a funny way. But she talked about uh the negative comments that she gets on TikTok. I mean and she was like, it's she was like, people are like, oh that's just like now it's so much worse. And she was like, no, it's not. She was like, I was a child star, and there were message boards, and she was like, I'm sorry, I had to get used to grown men commenting negative things about my body as a child. And she was a funny, she was like a funny kid, like she was like the Nickelodeon, like jokester kid, and she's also beautiful and has a perfect bot, not that that matters, but like she was like, These people can't even fucking touch me because I just I learned at such a young age that when the comments get that mean, that's how sad of a life that they live. Yeah, and she was like, and now it just doesn't even touch me because I just know that it's pathetic.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. There is a new woman that I started following on Instagram, and I really am not gonna remember what her name is, but I'll I'll tell Lily afterward because she's worth following. And she is she has all these different segments she does. Um, but one of the ones that I've been loving is like rewiring her or like why her like millennial brain is so fucked up. And so like she'll go back into like old shows and movies and stuff that like we grew up with, like Lizzie McGuire and like all of these things and being like, oh, that's the that was like in her, and then she'll like re-google the the like characters that like were supposed to be like that were cast as like the fat ones and like going back and actually looking at pictures of that. So Raven was cast as like the curvy girl, exactly, and looking back at pictures and being like our like millennial brains are so fucked up because like she's millennial. I know. Sorry, you're just Jersey.
SPEAKER_01Obviously, her shirt. I know. Live Laughlin virality on the internet.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, except for that's off of Lisa Frank, who is in fact that was for the our do you know Lisa Frank? Lisa Frank is Lisa Frank says Lisa anyway. This woman is amazing to watch. Like, she'll remember when Jessica Simpson, do you remember? I was about to say Jessica Simpson. Okay, yeah. That was like there was one horrible after she had a baby where she like was a size two.
SPEAKER_01No, she was a size six. Oh wow. And people like I even remember in my brain being like, oh yeah, she has gotten back.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but you go back and look at those pictures and you're like, oh my god. No wonder we're all so fucked.
SPEAKER_01I suggest pregnancy and that everyone looks super skinny. I'm like, do you need a snack, Blamey? Like, do you need a snack? And you're like, no, you're good. It's a carb van. Yeah, she has snacks. I got the carbs with my neighbors are gonna text me and be like, so what was the carbs van? But yeah, it's crazy, it is crazy. I do feel like her pregnancy fixed my body dysmorphia.
SPEAKER_03I've heard that. I've heard that from a lot of people.
SPEAKER_01They really did. Yeah, I I like watched a clip even in my first trimester. I was like, oh my god, I was so fit. And and actually, I like have watched like uh I almost said flicks. What are they called? Films flicks? Yeah, oh my god. Um so hot and fried. Uh anyway, I watched like old like YouTube whatever. And I was like, I was like, God, I was like actually maybe too skinny, like too skinny. Like it's rewired my brain. Although I'll probably look at back at this video and be like, I looked like that ball. Jimothy. I got your Jimothy over here. Combination of world. Jonathan. Oh, it's time. Jimothy and the yoga ball. Um, okay. Did we not cover anything? Yeah, what else what else did what did we do? What else were we trying to not talk about before we started the podcast that we were like, wait, wait, feel buds.
SPEAKER_03I have one memory of you because I've been a fan. Yes. Positive. Okay, good. Never mind. All right, let's add it. That's why this is cool for me. Because I did SBT, oh god, it was like 2020. Early. Two. Early SBT. Yeah, it was around then. Um, and I DNF'd.
SPEAKER_02So chic. So chic, so demure.
SPEAKER_03And uh, before I DNF'd, like there was a long stretch of time for me without water. Ugh. And it was like, it was the day it was like 96 degrees and just like dust. Yeah. And I had I was at a real low and I was walking my bike up a hill. Uh yeah. Yeah, and you with the lead women were descending the hill, and I was like, whoa, here come like the real rappers. I was like, look how cool. Don't look at me. Nothing to say over here, ladies. Like, go in. And like you were in that group, and you yelled over at, I swear in my life, you like you like yelled over at me encouragingly. You were like, you got it. Sweet. And I was like, I so don't have it. But like, that is like I was like so cool.
SPEAKER_00Actually, I mean such a classic Sarah thing.
SPEAKER_01Where it was like kind of close, I a lot of it was so hot, and a lot of people were walking in. It was like a death march. Yes, yeah. And I was thinking they're the smart ones in this world because there's no reason we need to be going this hard. It was this stupid hill, and it was so hot.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, like Gabe got heat strokes from the race. Like horrible. So I I don't also was so not trained for that. But I was like good job walking. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I walked in my races. You still didn't. Well, I was wondering if it was the year that I like decided. I've like historically have never really like jived with the SBT course. It was the 140. Wasn't I there one year? Yeah, you came to the first year when we were like paid to go, which was really sweet. Who was paid to go? Uh they like paid like some of the top athletes. I certainly didn't get paid for even the trip. Okay. I actually think we split everything. There's no way. I do remember driving home after that one though. We and that huge neon elk. Yeah, I think Sarah was hallucinating. Literally driving home. I was so sleepy. It's like a 10-hour drive from Durant. Oh, from here, I bet. Yeah. It is. Is it? Yeah. Yeah. Anyway. Anywho, um, I think we're all so hot. I'm dehydrated at this point. Let's take some clothes off. Let's wrap this up. I'll just do a quick uh one more ad read um for uh uh Rafa. Well, okay, I guess I didn't talk about the Rafa Women's 100 on September 5th and 6th.
SPEAKER_03Yes, but I also don't have many details on that.
SPEAKER_01I know well you've actually participated in one of the Rafa Women's 100 when you drove the bus behind the group ride that I hosted. And I remember it incredibly well. Here in Durango. Okay. Oh, I do have the black. I didn't have a bra on. Or you had to be. I didn't have a bra on? You were like, yeah, anyway. Um okay, uh, well, this episode is supported by Rafa and Zwift as a part of their campaign celebrating the rivalries that push women cycling forward on the road and on the trainer in communities that grow uh and in the communities that grow around the sport. So thank you, Rafa. Thank you, Zwift. Um, and they're doing some cool stuff, mainly uh the women's tour. They're Zwift is a huge sponsor. Well, it's Avek Zwift. Um and Rafa has the women's 100 on September 5th and 6th, which is this is what that campaign is sort of about. It's truly just about getting women on bikes. Bringing women together. Yeah, and it's 100k. I would like to point out like great distance to ride. 60 miles. Yeah. But you can say 100. So I did 100. Yeah. Rafa 100. And there's also Zwift community rides, um, watch the Femme, and then we all basically, and we talked about this on the episode, but we share the mission of getting more women on bikes. Yes. Chase each other forward, as they say. Oh, who says that? I think Rafa wrote that. Oh, really? Good job, Rafa.
SPEAKER_03That's I mean, it was pretty good. Maybe maybe it's like from an author, but and also talk a little bit of shit, you know?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and talk some shit in bone things. Don't forget to bone.
SPEAKER_00Don't forget to talk some shit. Don't forget to throw heavy stuff. Tork on a log.
SPEAKER_01And on that note, I hope you move here.
SPEAKER_02Thanks. Thanks, Lady.
