If our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, how are we treating it? Let's contemplate this

together by answering a few questions. You're listening to Whole Heart Conversations, a podcast especially for women to boost your mental and emotional health and build resilience as you grow in your relationship with Jesus Christ. I'm your host, Constance Lavonice.

I've always recognized the importance of taking care of my physical health, but I've always struggled to be consistent. When I was younger, I just took health for granted. I didn't focus on taking care of my body or paying attention to what I needed to eat to make my body healthier or to keep my body healthy.

Basically, I just lived. And the only time that I did focus on my body specifically was when I was looking at or pointing out some type of flaw that I thought I had. However, as I've gotten older, I see the value of taking care of our bodies.

And as I was reading my Bible this week, I realized something I had forgotten. God has a spiritual purpose for taking care of our bodies. And it's found in Corinthians, 1 Corinthians, chapter 6, and I want to read it to you.

It's 1 Corinthians chapter 6, verses 19 through 20. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought for a price. Therefore, glorify God in your body.

And as I was reading this, three things stood out. The first was that our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. That means it's a building, a dwelling place for the Holy Spirit.

And the Holy Spirit is what we receive from God when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. And it tells us that the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead resides in us. So, we have the Holy Spirit within our bodies.

The second thing I noticed was we are not our own. We belong to God, and God is invested in us. Glorify God in your body is how this verse 20 ends. So, God wants us to glorify Him in our bodies. So how can we treat our bodies in a way that glorifies or exalts God? What does it look like? Here are some questions to contemplate. The

first one is, what are you doing to take care of your body? And how are you doing it? What are you giving your body? Consider that. The next thing is nutrition. What type of nutrition are you giving your body? Are you giving it proper nutrition that leads to health and wellness? Or does it lead to sickness and disease? And what about hydration? Are you drinking enough water? Our bodies are made up of at least 50% water. I've seen different statistics from 50% to 70%, but we know it's at least 50%. So, are you getting enough fluids? It's important for our cells to function properly. And then rest. Are you getting rest? Or are you always running from one place to the other, or one thing

to the next thing, but you can't get any rest? You can't sit still for moments at a time? And what about your sleep? How much sleep are you getting? Are you getting enough sleep? Are you getting too much sleep? Are you tired in the morning? Are you fatigued? Or are you energized? Are you getting deep sleep, restorative sleep? How's your sleep? And what about movement, exercise? What type of exercise are you getting? Do you have any hobbies that move your body? Hiking, swimming, skating? What do you like to do? Our bodies are designed to move, and we need movement. A sedentary lifestyle, kind of like my job where I sit all day, is not good for us long term. So, what

I have to do is during the day, I have to make an effort to get up and move. And then also to find activities that I can do to make up for the time when I'm sitting around.

So, what type of exercise are you doing? And then also important is your current mindset. What's your mindset about your body? Is it positive, which promotes acceptance and self-love? Or is it negative, which just stirs up dissatisfaction and rejection? But the most important question is how are you nourishing the Holy Spirit that dwells within you? What do you practice to honor God and His presence in your life? Are you praying, meditating, praise, worship, or sometimes just getting quiet and just sitting before God in silence? I like to sing sometimes. What are you doing? So just think about that. What are your spiritual practices? And as you contemplate these questions, write down what you sense God is telling you to change. Then take a step to change it. For me, just knowing that my body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit lives within me, it gives me confidence that I can treat my body the way God wants me to treat it in a manner that's pleasing to Him.

And it's not difficult because of the Holy Spirit that dwells in me. So sometime this week, take some time and read 1 Corinthians chapter 6 verses 19 through 20. And I pray that you will allow the Holy Spirit to speak to your heart about how you can take care of your body and glorify God. And I would love to hear from you.
