What Meditation Really Means

According to Cornell Health, meditation is the practice of training your mind to focus on one thing at a time and to be fully present in the moment. Biblical meditation focuses specifically on scripture. Let's talk about how we can achieve holistic wellness through biblical meditation. You're listening to Whole Heart Conversations, a podcast especially for women to receive biblical encouragement that fosters resilience through the practical application of God's Word. I'm your host, Constance Lavonice. Meditation has spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical benefits, all the essentials for holistic health. But why biblical meditation and how does it work? First and foremost, the word of God is life. Proverbs chapter 4, verse 20 through 22 says, My son, be attentive to my words, incline your ear to my sayings, let them not escape from your sight. Keep them within your heart, for they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh. God wants us to pay attention to what God is saying to us. And one of the best ways to do that is reading scripture. And as we read the scripture, do not let them escape from our sight. As we place the scripture in our mind, it gives us a vision which guides our mind, emotions, and our actions. And keep them within your heart, our inner self, our soul, the mind, will, and emotions, for they are life to those who find them. Life, your very existence, and healing to all their flesh. Another scripture is Hebrews chapter four, verse twelve. And it says for the word of God is living and alive, sharper than any two edged sword, piercing to the vision of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And that's the reason that meditating on God's word is effective holistically. Secondly, how does it look to meditate biblically? I read a book several years ago called Growing Up, How to Be a Disciple Who Makes Disciples by Robbie Gallaty. And in this book, Robbie Gallaty has what he calls a simple system to help you with both memorization and meditation. And there are four steps. The first step is to picture it, the second step is to ponder it. The third step is to personalize it. And the fourth step is to pray over it. And I've since adopted these steps in my personal life and also in my work with my clients as a way to meditate biblically. Ask yourself, what would you like to have happen in your life? Or what would you like to shift in your life? Would you like more joy, less stress, less anxiety, less physical pain, more confidence? Choose a scripture and meditate on it. And going back to the system by Robbie Gallaty, picture it. So for instance, if you're in need of peace, a scripture like Isaiah 26, 3, which says, You keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on you because he trusts in you. What would that look like to meditate on it? First, picture it. Get a picture of what it looks like to be kept in perfect peace, as you keep your mind focused on God. Picture it. What does it look like? Visualize it. And as you picture it and you have a visualization of what the peace of God as you focus on Him looks like, ponder it. Mall over it. Think about it. Ponder it. And as you ponder this picture, personalize it. That means to put yourself in that picture. Personalize yourself being at peace as you focus on God. What does that look like? Let it sink in, think about it, mole over it, and then pray over it. Pray to God that it will become a reality in your life. Picture it, ponder it, personalize it, and pray over it. Whatever the issue, take some time, find an appropriate scripture, and meditate on it. Another scripture that's good for meditation is Philippians four verses six through seven. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your request be made known to God, and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. So as you meditate on this verse, not only are you forming a picture of yourself and then praying that it will be a reality in your life, you're also memorizing scripture, which I talked about earlier, is life. It's our life and it's healing to all of our body. So finally, as you meditate on scripture, your spirit will be effective. Your spirit, that part of you that allows us to commune with God, and you'll strengthen your relationship with God and your awareness of God. And your soul, your mind, will, and emotions. You will increase your mental clarity and focus, decrease anxiety, regulate your emotions, and improve your emotional well-being. In your body, you'll see it as you decrease pain, especially when you utilize deep breathing along with meditation. It improves digestion, it oxygenates your body, it lowers your heart rate, it actually puts you in parasympathetic nervous system dominance, which is the rest and digest, the opposite of the stress response. So I want to encourage you this week to allow biblical meditation to become a spiritual practice and the essence of achieving holistic health and wellness.
