When Fear Loses Its Grip
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Fear can feel spiritual and physical at the same time. It creeps into your voice when you need to speak, your hands when you need to act, and your calendar when you keep postponing the thing you know you’re called to do. I’m Constance Lavonice, and I’m leaning into one of the clearest anchors for overcoming fear and timidity: 2 Timothy 1:7. God does not give us a spirit of fear. He gives power, love, and self-discipline, and that truth changes how we show up in real life.
We walk through what fear actually does when it goes unchecked: it neutralizes you, makes you hesitant, and keeps you wavering at the edge of obedience. Then we turn to the antidote God provides. We talk about the power of the Holy Spirit to endure beyond your natural ability, the love of God that stabilizes identity and drives out fear, and the gift of a sound mind that helps you think clearly instead of being led by emotions. Along the way, we connect 1 John 4:18 on perfect love casting out fear with the everyday experience of anxiety, low confidence, and decision fatigue.
We also ground courage in purpose. Ephesians 2:10 reminds us we’re created for good works God already prepared, and where He ordains, He enables. If you’ve been holding back from a promotion, a speech, a new ministry, a business idea, leaving a confining environment, or even taking a trip because you’re afraid to fly, I’m inviting you to meditate on this verse and take one next step.

God’s Answer To Fear
Constance LavoniceIn 2 Timothy chapter 1, verse 7, Paul is speaking to Timothy regarding his ministry. He's encouraging him with the truth that God doesn't give us the spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. Fear neutralizes, it makes us hesitant and reluctant. It causes us to waver in doing the work or living the life that God has called us to live. Fear is the opposite of power, love, and a sound mind. But when we receive God's love, his perfect love, and we know that his spirit dwells in us, enabling us and empowering us, it dismantles fear. First John 4 18 says, There is no fear in love, but perfect love cast out fear. If you find yourself being fearful, shy, or timid, lacking self-confidence, and is holding you back, neutralizing you, continue listening as I encourage you with the same scripture. And if you're new here, I want to welcome you. Thank you for joining. You are listening to Whole Heart Conversations, a podcast for women that provides biblical encouragement to foster whole heart, spirit, soul, and body resilience. I am your host, Constance Lavonice. The new international version of 2 Timothy 1 7 says, For the Spirit of God does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline. The Spirit of God, which is the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And the first thing that He gives us is power. The omnipotent, all-powerful Spirit of God that empowers us to do things beyond our natural abilities or beyond what we think is our natural ability, such as a sense of peace in the midst of chaos, calm in an anxiety-provoking situation, or just a sense of joy or gratitude, or even the ability to smile during a period of sorrow, mental, emotional, or physical pain, God gives us the power to endure, to make it through. The second thing that He gives us is love. God's love, an everlasting love. His grace through faith is a gift of God. It's not earned or deserved. It's through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ. John 3, verse 16 says, God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life. God gives us a confident love, an everlasting love. And because he loves us, we can love ourselves and we can love other people. And it goes back to first John chapter four, verse 18. There is no fear in love, but perfect love cast out fear. We cannot be fearful or timid when it comes to the love of God that we have inside of us. And finally, God gives us self-discipline, the ability to control or manage our emotions and behaviors. He gives us a sound mind that's not guided by our emotions, where we can think logically and rationally, connecting the dots, making the optimal use of our executive functioning when our nervous system is in balance and it's not shutting down our thinking brain, allowing us to consistently act in alignment with God's will and purpose for our lives. Ephesians chapter 2, verse 10 says that for we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. God has created us for good works that He has already ordained. And when He has ordained us to do something, He will enable us to do it through His anointing. So if you have a spirit of shyness or timidity that makes you hesitant or reluctant and it holds you back, neutralizing you, whether it's applying for a job promotion, giving a speech, starting that ministry or that new business you've been thinking about, stepping away from an environment that's keeping you contained, or just going on that trip that you keep delaying because you're afraid to fly. Meditate on this verse and allow the knowledge of this verse to empower you to take the next step. I believe for someone listening, now is the time to step forth and initiate what you sense God has been prompting you to do. And if this message resonated with you, please subscribe and share with someone who needs encouragement to know that God does not give the spirit of fear or timidity. And text the show and let me know what's on your heart so we can talk about it.
