AndyWelcome to a bit of a special episode of the Jersey Football Podcast. It's not the normal weekly review of Jersey football as a whole. I'm your host Andy. She I've got the pleasure of being joined by. Jersey Manager, Jack Cannon and Jersey under 21 Player Shawnee MCC Colgan as we're gonna take a look back at Friday evenings under 21 me. Played at Victoria Park in Zi, where Jersey ran out as very convincing. Five, two winners. Jack and Shawnee, thanks for joining us this evening. How you doing?
SeaneyYeah, I'm all good. Thank you.
AndyJack, we spoke and the lead up to the game. You spoke about how you like to play on the front foot, be really aggressive and really get after them. How did the reality of the game compare to what you were hoping to see?
JackI think I touched on it previously when we spoke last week and I said I expected it to be a bit frantic at the start, and it was definitely that. I think looking back at the goals I've said it in other media outlets as well that I felt we should have probably done better, especially with the first, as it was hopefully put into the own and free of our lunch jump for it. Me and Vinnie were chatting about it. We probably just needed one person to have a bit of sort of composure and communication and put a big name on it and then the other two could clear out. And the, it was just the way the ball fell and obviously they've tucked it away. And then you are obviously starting on the back foot then. But to be honest with you I felt even in possession, I felt like things would happen. Sean had a chance at one there and then obviously made it one all. So yeah, the way it panned out in the first half was as to be expected. I think the last 15 minutes of the first half we started to take a bit more control of the game. And then the second half we executed the game plan, if you like. That sort of the performance that I'd hoped for. And Fair Play lads they pulled off.
AndyYeah, it was such a strong start in the second half. And Shani, that was your third under 21 Mirati you've played in the second time you played at Victoria Park. I suppose from your side, I think obviously the first time or two years ago when you played the Guernsey, won the game, were you, did you have any doubts or any nerves when they scored so early? Was there any concern about that or were you still quite confident that you had more than enough?
SeaneyI definitely, no, I definitely weren't nervous. We had the quality to go and win the game. I thought we had con, we got control of it further down the line, but at the start it was quite nervy. I didn't think many players had a lot of confidence, but then we just grew into it and yeah, we got better as time went on.
AndyYeah. And Ro Robbie said during the week when we did last or last week's podcast, he was saying that one of the key things always to, that's a bit of a cliche, but to play the game, not the occasion. Do you think there was an element of that?
SeaneyYeah, definitely. Even like we arrived a bit late to the game and it didn't really get, I don't think it got pushed back. Did it? Wacker?
JackNo. No. They wouldn't allow it. No.
SeaneyYeah. Even if when we're on the pitch, we went up, it was quite loud. They were very loud. We couldn't really hear each other to be fair. So I think there's a few nerves, but when we got going, they couldn't really get near us to be.
AndyYeah. And I suppose for you, Jack, you've been there, seen it done at Avenue as a player over in Guernsey, seen that hostile atmosphere. Yeah. So you're able to hopefully provide a bit of guidance to the players as well.
JackYeah, I think to be fair, they've all played in junior tis and inter insular stuff now. So they're obviously used to playing against Zi and probably similar players as they've all grown up in, in that age. Bracket. So I think looking at the previous results over the last few years that they've had against similar teams, we were always confident that we were the better side. And especially as I spoke to you last week we've got some real sort of talent in that team. Yeah, I was always very confident. You could probably tell by the manner in which I was speaking last week and even back in November. But fair pay to lads, they've still gotta go out and do everything right. And I think certainly for the last sort of 15, 20 minutes of the first half and then the whole of the second half I think we were more than good value for the win.
AndyYeah. I think when we saw the start 11 of the first thing that, and we, I know we spoke about it during the week, but the first thing I looked at was just the firepower where you've got obviously Sean there, Harry Scott, joey O'Toole stand on just real forward thinking players that were always gonna cause a threat. So I think there was always gonna be goals in the game, wasn't there?
JackYeah. Even on the bench we had the likes of sort of Harry McKenzie and Kevin Gilroy, so there was a lot of goals even on our bench and even obviously Miguel Ka can obviously play because of his commitment with the balls. But yeah, I mean it was, it was a really good, strong attacking group we had. And it was just a case of obviously trying to pick the right one. And I think we did that to be fair. I think I think we chose the right team.
AndyAnd Sean, is that your last 20 ones? Do you have another one? And
Seaneythat was my last one. Yeah,
Andythat was your last one. Yeah. Top age
Seaneygroup there. Yeah.
AndyYeah. Seemed to like a goal in those games as well. We've got a goal last year at Springfield two this year at Victoria Park. How was that feeling scored at Victoria Park again?'cause I've read a few things. I haven't seen the highlights back yet, but I've read a few things where they spoke about the atmosphere. Was that a, was that quite a pleasing moment to just silence'em a little bit with the goals?
SeaneyYeah, it was unreal feeling. To be fair, I've never scored in Guernsey, so it was good, especially in front of that many people. There's quite a few fans and it was so loud, so it was such a good feeling. But it was a bit guttering when I scored and they scored about two seconds later, so that went great. But yeah, it was class to be fair. I loved it.
AndyAnd I'll ask you first, but I beginning to hear from Wacko as well. What were the thoughts at the final whistle?
SeaneyAbout the game in general or,
Andyyeah, just, obviously it was all over long before that, but how did, when that final whistle went, how did it feel?
SeaneyYeah, just relief to be fair. Just we all enjoyed it. We all played. I felt like everyone played excellence to be fair. And yeah, it was just class to get the win.
AndyAnd wacko for you, obviously la Last year you went to Victoria Park for the senior me and it wasn't a great day. Did this in any way make up for that or are you still all focused on me? For the big one?
JackYeah. Obviously as soon as the game finished, it was turning our attention to that, but we had the, we were in a fortunate position after an hour we could. Relaxed a bit and enjoyed obviously lad's performance and myself, Vinny and Adam Lester. We were in happy with the performance and obviously the amount of goals we scored, the goals we scored themselves. And then obviously, yeah, just to, it's like I said in the week all about the labs experience and those moments and I was obviously delighted for them when the final whistle went and they can obviously en enjoy their night.
AndyWhat would you say? Was there any key, was there any key moments that stuck out to you as being pivotal in terms of the way the game was going? Any changes in momentum or anything like that?
JackNo, I think it was just the sort of attitude change in the second half. I think we spoke about it at half time as a group. I think it was just playing on the front foot and being a bit more aggressive in our positioning. And then when we get the ball, get it moving, get it try and get it down a bit quicker.'cause, and in, first off, we didn't play an awful lot of football. Neither did they really. That sort of game plan, I think was quite obvious. I think if anyone watches it back, they were starting the game by turning the ball round quite often. Which I felt we dealt with to be fair. But then once we settled into the game, I thought we dominated the game. And then I always thought the with the quality players we had we'd win.
AndyYeah, another great performance from Stand done as well. Was there anyone else that stood out for you apart from I know we, Sean had a, the
Jacklad on the
Andycall. Great gig. Say again?
JackThe lad on the call. Yeah, no, I think, to be fair, the, i, we expect these performances from these players. I spoke to Sha about it in the week, and I always say the same thing to Shani. It's more a case of with him, it's for me it's, if he's working hard and getting behind the ball when we're defending just doing what he can, he's not in the team to make a sort of physical impact. He's in there to, bring the best out of us technically and get on the ball, get on a half turn, play threaded passes. And then obviously when you can get chances to assist and score goals. And he's done that again. He did it again in old Knee, which in the semi-final and ratty last year. And then, yeah, like you said, Stan will Yates they're both outstanding players. They, you know what you're gonna get from them as well. I was happy that. The sort of free goal scores were central and quite pivotal to what we thought we were gonna do and what we ended up doing. And I was delighted with that.
AndyYeah. And I think sha I think what wack was just said there, I think that probably sounds quite familiar to you, doesn't it? I think we've had similar conversations over the season. But you've been in fantastic for all season, so it's great to see you carry that on into the game. And I know from. Speaking to a few people that you had a pretty big night celebrating. You all went out and enjoyed it. I think we like to stick to the philosophy of what happens on tour. Stays on tour. So we won't say too much about events that happened or individual, but you certainly were out and made you enjoyed yourselves.
SeaneyIt was a brilliant night, to be fair. Everyone enjoyed it. Yeah, a few things happened, but everyone was on good behavior. Yeah, it was a good night, first night out in Sey, to be fair. And yeah, it was good. We all enjoyed it.
AndyNo, it was brilliant stuff. And certainly Robbie and I are really pleased for, you're really proud of the young lives as well.'cause we, there's a lot of players in that 11 that we've both seen. Pretty much since they were small kids working through, coming through the age group. So it's great to see them. Brilliant performance, brilliant result. Congratulations to you both really well deserved.
SeaneyThanks a lot. Thanks very much.
AndyYeah, thank you. Thanks. Thanks very much guys. Thanks for listening, everyone. We'll have the main podcast later on this week, but hope you enjoy this one. I'm all look forward to speaking to you then.
