In Episode 4 of From Cain to Christ: Sibling Stories, we step onto the shores of Galilee with two sets of brothers—Peter & Andrew and James & John—and watch what happens when Jesus interrupts an ordinary workday with an extraordinary call. As nets are dropped and boats are left behind, we explore what immediate obedience looks like, how sibling relationships can strengthen our response to God, and how Jesus redirects ordinary lives (and even thunderous personalities) into kingdom purpose. Scripture: Matthew 4:18–22; Mark 3:16–17.

Jesus calls ordinary people in ordinary moments. Sibling strength: Peter & Andrew and James & John following together, encouraging one another, and answering the call. What “nets” might God be asking you to release so you can follow more fully?

Have you ever noticed that sometimes the biggest moments in our lives happen in the middle of an ordinary day? You're just doing what you always do. Working, cleaning, running errands. And suddenly God steps right into your routine with an invitation that changes everything. That's exactly what happened to four fishermen. Two sets of brothers. They were just cleaning their nets, minding their own business, when Jesus walked by and said, Follow me.

And they did. Not later and not after thinking about it. And not even after tying up loose ends. Scripture says they immediately left everything and followed him. Today, Bernie and I want to talk about Peter and Andrew, James and John, brothers who left their nets because Jesus called their names. Let's look at the scripture reading. Let's start with Matthew 4, verses 18 through 22. One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew, throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. Jesus called out to them, Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people. And they left their nets all at once and followed him. A little farther up the shore, he saw two other brothers, James and John, sitting in a boat with their father Zebedee, repairing their nets, and he called to them, Come too. They immediately followed him, leaving the boat and their father behind.

What I love about these brothers is how ordinary the lives were. Fishermen by trade, hardworking men with cowused hands, family responsibilities, and daily routines. Nothing glamorous, nothing that would make someone say, These will be the leaders of the early church. And yet Jesus called them.

Peter did not know that Jesus would rename him, reshape him, or use him to preach the sermon that launched the church. But Andrew's simple invitation opened that door.

James and John were different. Jesus called them while they were in the boat with their father Zebedee, made in that's working the family business. And when Jesus said, Follow me, Scripture says immediately they left the boat and their father. Can you imagine that moment? Leaving your dad in the boat? Walking away from everything familiar to you because you heard the voice of the Savior. Jesus later gave them the nickname, the Sons of Thunder. And if you know their stories, you'll understand why. They had passion, fire, sometimes a little bit too much of it. They were the ones who wanted to call down fire on a Samaritan village. They were the ones who asked for seats of honor besides Jesus, but Jesus never rejected their enthusiasm. He just redirected it.

These four men, Peter, Andrew, James, and John, became part of Jesus' inner circle. They stood on the Mount of Olives as he taught about the end times. Peter, James, and John were with Jesus at the Transfiguration, and again in the quiet, heavy darkness of Ghessene. They witnessed miracles, they fumbled, they grew, and they followed.

SPEAKER_01

There yes, given in a split second of the shores of Galilee, shaped the future of the church. Some of their pasts ended in martyrdom. Others continued in leadership. But all of them lived out their call to become fishers of men. And it all began with one simple invitation from Jesus and a willingness to drop their nets.

SPEAKER_00

Shall we pray? Heavenly Father, thank you for calling ordinary people to extraordinary purposes. Thank you for Peter, Andrew, James, and John, men who heard the voice of Jesus and followed without hesitation. Teach us to recognize your invitation in the middle of everyday lives and give us the courage to drop whatever keeps us from walking closely with you. Make us faithful disciples, bold witnesses, and willing servants. Use our lives, Lord, for your glory. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Shalom.
