Welcome to From the Well to the World. Today we begin Holy Week with Palm Sunday, the triumphant entry. It is a prophecy fulfilled. Scripture for today comes from Matthew 21, 1 through 11. As Jesus and the disciples approached Jerusalem, they came to the town of Bethpage on the Mount of Olives. Jesus sent two of them on ahead. Go into the village over there, he said. As soon as you enter it, you will see a donkey tied there with its colt beside it. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone asks what you are doing, just say, The Lord needs them, and he will immediately let you take them. This took place to fulfill the prophecy that said, Tell the people of Jerusalem, look, your king is coming to you. He is humble, riding on a donkey, riding on a donkey's colt. The two disciples did as Jesus commanded. They brought the donkey and the colt to him and threw their garments over the colt, and he sat on it. Most of the crowd spread their garments on the road ahead of them, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. Jesus was in the center of the procession, and the people all around him were shouting, Praise God for the Son of David, blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Praise God in highest heaven. The entire city of Jerusalem was in an uproar as he entered. Who is this? They asked. And the crowd replied, It is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee. Now let's turn to Zechariah 9:9. Rejoice, O people of Zion, shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem, look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet he is humble, riding on a donkey, riding on a donkey's colt. Matthew tells us that Jesus intentionally chose a donkey and her colt to ride into Jerusalem, which fulfilled Zechariah's ancient promise. This was a sign Israel had been waiting for, the moment when her king would appear.
SPEAKER_00In ancient times, kings who came for war rode horses, but kings who came in peace rode donkeys. When Jesus came riding into Jerusalem, he wasn't declaring war, he was declaring peace. Peace with God, peace to his own sacrifice. David had once fled Jerusalem on a donkey during Absalom's rebellion. Zechariah promised that the son of David would return to Zion the same way. And here he is, Jesus coming back to his city as the true king.
SPEAKER_01And the people knew something divine was happening. They lifted their voices and cried, Hosanna to the son of David. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna means Save us Lord, a cry of need, a cry of worship, a cry of hope. But Palm Sunday holds a quiet irony. The same city that welcomed him as king would just days later crucify him. Under the sign King of the Jews, Jesus came humbly on a donkey the first time, but he will return on a white horse, victorious, reigning and ending all war forever. Palm Sunday reminds us that Jesus does not just enter cities, he enters hearts, and he comes gently, humbly, but as the true king. Shall we pray, Heavenly Father, thank you. Thank you for sending Jesus, our humble King, our Prince of Peace, our Savior who hears the cry of Hosanna. As we walk through Holy Week, slow our hearts and open our eyes. Help us rediscover the beauty, the surrender, and the victory of Jesus. May your peace enter every home listening today. In Jesus' precious name we pray. Amen.
