God Has a Sense of Humor!
We picture God as serious. But read the Bible a little closer. Tucked inside these sacred pages are moments of comedy that are so perfectly timed that it could only be divine wit and humor! A talking donkey. A prophet sulking under a plant. Even a king given "one more night with the frogs." Today's podcast is
Sarah, Abraham, and the Baby Named Laughter (Genesis 18:12-15)

Welcome to From the Wealth to the World. This week we are exploring a topic that might surprise some people. God has a sense of humor. We often picture God as serious and solemn, speaking from the clouds in a voice that never cracks a smile. Yet, when we read Scripture closely, we find moments filled with irony and surprise and even laughter. After all, the God who created our ability to laugh certainly understands it. And one of the most beautiful examples is found in the story of Abraham and Sarah, where God gives an elderly couple an impossible promise and then names their little miracle child laughter. Let's start with Genesis 17, verses 17 and 19. Then Abraham bowed down to the ground, but he laughed to himself in disbelief. How could I become a father at the age of 100? He thought. So Abraham said to God, May Ishmael live under your special blessing. But God replied, No, Sarah, your wife will give birth to a son for you. You will name him Isaac, and I will confirm my covenant with him and his descendants as an everlasting covenant.
SPEAKER_00Now I'll be reading Genesis 18, 12 through 16. So Sarah laughed silently. A woman my age have a baby? She scoffed to herself, and with a husband as old as mine? Then God said to Abraham, Why did Sarah laugh? Why did she say, Can an old woman like me have a baby? Is this anything too hard for God? Next year, just as I told you, I will certainly see to it that Sarah has a son. But Sarah denied it. I didn't laugh, she lied, for she was afraid.
SPEAKER_01She became pregnant and she gave birth to a son for Abraham in his old age. This happened at just the time God had said it would, and Abraham named their son Isaac. Eight days after Isaac was born, Abraham circumcised him as God had commanded. Abraham was 100 years old when Isaac was born, and Sarah declared, God has brought the laughter. All who hear about this will laugh with me. Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse a baby? Yet I have given Abraham a son in his old age.
SPEAKER_00It's an amazing story because the promise itself seems almost unbelievable. In Genesis 17, God tells Abraham that Sarah will soon have a son. Abraham is about a hundred years old, and Sarah is approaching 90. Abraham responds by falling on his face and laughing. It's difficult not to smile at the scene. God has just renewed his covenant and changed Abram's name to Abraham, meaning father of many nations. Yet what captures Abraham's attention most is a promise that his elderly wife will bear a child. What's remarkable is God was not offended. Instead, he reaffirms his promise and announces the child's name Isaac, which means he laughs.
SPEAKER_01From her perspective, the years for having children have long passed. The promise sounds impossible, and when God asks why she laughed, Sarah becomes afraid and denies it, but God gently confronts her. What stands out is that her doubts do not stop God's plans. Even in the face of human weakness and unbelief, God remains faithful. The laughter that begins as doubt eventually becomes part of a greater testimony to God's power.
SPEAKER_00Then comes the moment God had promised all along. In Genesis 21, Isaac is born. Sarah's response is completely different from before. She says, God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me. The very thing she thought could never happen has come to pass. God has instructed Abraham and Sarah to name their son Isaac from the beginning. Every time they spoke his name, they were reminded of God's faithfulness. Their son's name became a daily testimony that God keeps his promises even when circumstances suggest otherwise.
SPEAKER_01Many Bible scholars note that laughter echoes throughout this story. Abraham laughs. Sarah laughs again when the promise is fulfilled. Yet, beneath all of this is a deeper truth. God has the final word. Abraham and Sarah looked at their age and saw impossibility. God looked at the same situation and saw an opportunity to display his power. What appears ridiculous from a human perspective becomes a powerful reminder that nothing is too difficult for the Lord.
SPEAKER_00We may quietly wonder how God could possibly work things out. Yet, this account reminds us that our limitations are not God's limitations. The Lord is able to accomplish his purposes even when we cannot see a way forward.
SPEAKER_01Another encouraging lesson is that God does not abandon his people because they struggle with doubt. Abraham left, Sarah left, yet God still fulfilled his promise. And this week we will continue God's stories of humor and laughter. And remember, even sometimes God's greatest blessings arrive in ways that we never expect. Shall we pray? Heavenly Father, we thank you for the story of Abraham, Sarah, and baby laughter named Isaac. Thank you for reminding us that nothing is impossible for you. When we are tempted to look only at our circumstances, help us to look instead at your faithfulness. Strengthen our faith when doubts arise and teach us to trust your promises even when we cannot see how they will be fulfilled. Lord, thank you for your patience with us. And just as you were patient with Abraham and Sarah, thank you for meeting us in our weaknesses and continue to work in our lives. Help us remember that your plans are greater than our understandings and that your timing is always perfect. Fill us with hope, joy, and confidence as we walk with you each day. May we learn to celebrate your goodness and find joy in the ways you work beyond our expectations, and may our lives point others to your faithfulness, just as Isaac's life pointed to the fulfillment of your promises. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
