Though we enjoy lots of nice romantic experiences that happen spontaneously, we seem to be under a sort of curse when it comes to planning romantic events.

On this special Valentine’s Day episode, we’re going to share some of our funniest and most memorable romantic disasters, where our plans went quite askew. You’ll hear about the head injury Zen got on our 19th anniversary; the hot air balloon ride that was so annoying, we wished it had ejector seats; and the time Matt boiled Zen alive (almost).

With a bonus bumper music: A song Matt wrote for Zeneba years ago - one of the few romantic gestures that actually DID go according to plan!

INTRO:
Welcome to Little Roads Unfiltered: Italy and Beyond

Today we’re doing a special Valentine’s Day episode - we’re going to talk about some of our most memorable romantic disasters. You’ll hear about:
- the head injury I got on our 19th anniversary
- The hot air balloon ride that was so annoying, we wished it had ejector seats
- The time Matt boiled me alive
[music up]

This is Matt Walker… and I’m Zeneba Bowers

We’re recording our chat here while sitting on the terrace of our tiny home in Italy - so you’ll get a sense of the sounds of life in our little town. We want this to be more like a casual conversion with us - complete with church bells, cats meowing, motor scooters and whatever else

So join us as we talk about our funniest romantic fails together … here on the Valentine's edition of Little Roads Unfiltered: Italy and Beyond.”

For those of you who don’t know us: We are professional musicians and also travel writers and consultants, living and working here in Italy for the past 6 years.
If you want to learn more about us and our lives, you can find us on our website LittleRoadsEurope..com, on our socials, and now here on this podcast.

So let’s get to chatting about our romantic fails!

[M: By the way, that intro was a song I wrote for Zen many years ago - we’ll play it out, too, at the end of this episode.]

First signs of romantic gestures not being “our thing”:
First Valentine's Day card from Matt with a screaming chicken on it, was originally a get well card. (Trying to be creative)
$0.99 bar of chocolate that was imported

Original Clarksville hotel, after gig there. jacuzzi tub, Candles, shrimp and Brie, champagne
Just like movies! Asked Matt to go out so I could set the scene
Foaming shampoo water, burning hair, broken champagne flute, blood in the foam

Every time we tried to make a created romantic event, things never worked out according to plan. (Plenty of romantic experiences spontaneously, but… )

Z Made fish and chips for Matt, brought it out to the park to have a picnic in a beautiful park. Total slop and completely inedible. Entire house smelled like fish cooking oil for 4 days and I vomited for 2 days just smelling it

But it was really a nice idea to do something nice for me…

ANNIVERSARIES: most of these were just random efforts, but:
Head injury for 19th anniversary, played wedding, got a B&B place (another hot tub) that turned out to be not good - this is why we need to visit ourselves for our business!

— “ADVERTISEMENT” BREAK —
That reminds me that we need to stop for a word from our sponsor - - - -  just kidding, we don’t have any sponsors - instead, today’s show is brought to you by: A Good Idea.
And today’s Good Idea is: Make an effort to say or do something nice to someone you care about (partner, friend, family, etc) …

and…That’s it!   … So anyway, where were we?

Hot air balloon experience - California wine country, 5AM start, family of 4 joined us last-minute

Overnight train trip Munich to Venice

Looking forward to a magical stay in Irish castle - played 19 Hours of recording sessions for Japanese video game, so we could stay in the worst castle of all time - lodging disasters episode
