Little Roads Unfiltered: Italy and Beyond
Professional classical musicians, authors and travel planners Zeneba and Matt, who live and work in Italy, discuss travel tips, destinations, and slice-of-life stories, from their balcony in Soriano nel Cimino. Their chats are unfiltered, with the sounds of their little town - and sometimes their cats! - always in the background.

INTRO:
Welcome to Little Roads Unfiltered: Italy and Beyond
Today we’re introducing a new type of episode: Real Life In Italy
We’ll be giving you a little slice of life - what we did with ourselves this past month…
Among other things, you’ll hear about:
- A wedding,
- home improvements,
- and the foreskin of Jesus Christ himself
[music up then down to 20%]
This is Matt Walker …and I’m Zeneba Bowers -
We’re recording while sitting on the terrace of our tiny home in Italy - so you’ll get a sense of the sounds of life in our little town - complete with traffic, church bells, cats meowing, motor scooters and trains and neighbors chatting and whatever else.
“ … we’ll be talking about our lives here in Italy, in today’s chat - here on Little Roads Unfiltered: Italy and Beyond.”
[Music up then fade out]
For those of you who don’t know us: We are professional musicians and also travel writers and consultants, living and working here in Italy for the past 6 years.
If you want to learn more about us and our lives, you can find us on our website LittleRoadsEurope..com, on our socials, and now here on our podcast…
…and by the way, we hope you like our intro music - Matt arranged it, and we recorded it right here in our house! Since we’re musicians working here in Italy, we thought that would be a fun and sensible addition to our show.
So let’s get to talking about what we’ve been up to this past month:
March 2026:
Started out the month w birthday lunch with friends - hard to find cheddar cheese
[normally take advantage of things here, rather than import stuff - but we occasionally miss something like cheddar cheese]
Trip to buy cheddar cheese;
explored Deruta afterwards - ceramic art everywhere
Renovations - cabinets/wardrobe/bookshelf - refer to renovation podcast
Used chance to take research trip to Bolsena - lodging 80/night
- living/walking in Bolsena, Crypt Santa Cristina, castle, lakeside (FLAT!)
Wedding in Viterbo -
Delayed getting to gig by snafu w client, scramble, shaving
Renaissance town hall, high beams / frescoes - Mayor officiated
Saxophone concert - checked out concert venue after
One of the things we like about Soriano is frequent musical or other artistic events
Recording Welsh songs for my Grandma, on violin she bought for me over 30 years ago
Ask us anything: Recent itinerary client asked: What is work day/week like?
Set own hours, but varies a lot depending on how many clients
Easy to get bogged down all day every day on computer
Important to carve out time to relax but also to get away for research… like:
Trip to Calcata w friends - refer to Bo & Lee episode
Town, artist colony, lodgings
Next day: special bakery, hill town w liquorificio
[These are the kinds of things we seek out for our travelers]
