Jen Lotze:

Hey there, coffee lovers and internet explorers. Welcome to Sip Cyber, the podcast that's on a quest for the perfect cup of coffee, or in today's case, a locally brewed and on-tap peach kombucha, and the simplest way to keep your digital life safe. So grab your favorite mug and let's get brewing. For a third episode, we're headed to a familiar and beloved spot for me in my hometown of River Falls, Wisconsin, Waystone Coffee. I love the community they've built around gaming, and I recently played my first role-playing game, Blood on the Clock Tower, at our game night here at IT Audit Labs. I was the chef, so you know I'm totally trustworthy. The vibe here reminds me that just as you trust a good community partner, you have to verify the ingredients of the message before you take your first sip. You know, with all the recent scams, it does make me wonder if all those Nigerian princes of yesteryear have just retired and are now sending us emails from a tropical beach somewhere. Well, today's tip is all about recognizing phishing. These are fake emails or texts that trick you into giving away personal information. It can be easy to fall for them because they often look like they're from a trusted company or a friend, but they're the cyber equivalent of a too good to be true special offer that feels just a little bit off. The core of this tip is to always verify the message's authenticity before you click a link or provide any information. I like to say verify, then trust. How do you do that? Well, first you're gonna want to check that the sender's email address is from where it says it is. If you expand on the name, you're going to see that it might be from AmazonSupport.com as opposed to just the real Amazon.com. Second, you're gonna want to look for typos or awkward phrasing, but AI makes this even trickier because they just aren't making those mistakes anymore. Third, a message that creates a sense of urgency. We want you to take a moment of pause. Go directly to that company's website for yourself to log in and check the account status. Please don't use the link they sent you. Your one actionable step for today is to be a cybersecurity detective. To take a moment to verify the sender of any suspicious email or text message before you act on it. This is a simple habit that offers a ton of security. Remember, take your time, take a breath, verify the information, then you can trust it. Well, that's all for our third episode. Thanks for joining me on this journey to Waystone Coffee and for taking a small step to secure your online life. We'll be back next week with another great small business and a new tip. Until then, stay safe and keep zipping.
