Enjoying coffee at a cozy booth in Greenbridge Coffee got me thinking: why don't our social media profiles feel as secure as this space? The uncomfortable truth is that most apps default to "public"—meaning strangers can see your posts, photos, and even your real-time location. What You'll Learn:
- Why default privacy settings leave you exposed to strangers

- The hidden danger of location sharing in apps like Snapchat Snap Map
- Why your kids' followers might see more than you think
- A simple 5-minute action plan to secure your social media accounts
Don't let your digital life be an open door. Take control today, and make your online presence as secure as your favorite coffee shop booth.

Hey there, coffee lovers and internet explorers. Welcome to Sip Cyber, the podcast that's on a quest for the perfect cup of coffee and the simplest way to keep your digital life safe. We'll travel small businesses, share their stories, and then get real about a cybersecurity tip that won't make your head spin. So grab your favorite mug and let's get brewing. For our fourth episode, we're at Greenbridge Coffee in Stillwater, Minnesota. It's a bike shop and a coffee shop, and they do both incredibly well. My favorite spot in the shop is one of the cozy deep booths. It's a place where I can feel completely secure and focused on my work, and it got me thinking, shouldn't our social media profiles feel just as secure? Today I'm sipping on a meal, a perfect drink for the season with its hint of spice and the ideal brew for thinking about how to keep my online space just as warm and welcoming, but also private. As you might have guessed, today's tip is all about social media privacy. The feeling of security and privacy I get in this cozy booth is exactly what we should strive for online. So let's think of our online profiles as a guest list for a party. You get to decide who sees your photos, thoughts, and personal details. The goal is to lock the door and share your digital life only with those you know and trust. So, how do we do that? It's all in the settings. And the first shocking thing for many people is that their default settings are wide open. For example, on many platforms, the default is public, which means anyone, even people without an account, can see what you post. You can change this to friends only or make your account completely private so that only people you approve can follow you and see your content. This raises a crucial question, especially for parents. Do you really know all of your kids' followers? And do you want them to see the exact address of where your kid is all the time? That's the reality of the default location sharing on many apps. And I wish I was exaggerating, but I'm definitely not. Features like Snapchat's SnapMap, which shows real-time location to friends, or even public stories, which are visible to anyone by default, can inadvertently reveal where you live, work, or frequent. And while I want everyone to check out the coffee shops I go to, I'd still like to keep my real-time location private. Make sure to turn off location access for both of these apps in your phone's settings and within the app itself. Your one actionable step today is to take five minutes and go through the privacy settings on your favorite social media apps. These are just a few examples, but each application has its own unique privacy settings. Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, even the apps for the stores that you shop at all handle your data differently. It's a simple step, but it gives you full control over your digital identity. Well, that's it for our fourth episode. Thanks for joining me on this journey to Greenbridge Coffee and for taking a small step to secure your online life. We'll be back next week with another great small business and a new tip. Until then, stay safe and keep sipping.
