Hey there, coffee lovers and internet explorers. Welcome to Sip Cyber, the podcast that's on a quest for the perfect cup of coffee and the simplest way to keep your digital life safe. We travel to small businesses, share their stories, and then get real about a cybersecurity tip that won't make your head spin. So grab your favorite mug and let's get brewing. Today's episode brings us to a small bright gem in Hudson, Wisconsin called Ember and Bean. It's a place I find myself when I need a change of scenery. The espresso machine here has this wonderful vintage feel, and their pour over coffee is just so smooth. It's a place that feels familiar and welcoming, much like your phone number. That one thing that connects you to everything and everyone you know. This is exactly what today's tip is all about. Today's cybersecurity tip is about a dangerous but preventable attack called a SIM swap. This is a scary scam where a criminal tricks your mobile carrier into transferring your phone number to their own device, giving them access to everything that uses your phone number for verification. It's like a criminal tricking the coffee shop into transferring your loyalty card to their account, allowing them to use all of your rewards and free cups of coffee. That would be awful. Once they have control of your phone number, they can access and even change your multi-factor authentication for all of your secure accounts from banking to social media. The SIM swindle is a major threat, but the fix is simple and powerful. The tip is to call your mobile carrier and add a secure pin to your account. You can also go online. This pin is a secret password that proves that you are the real owner of the account. Without it, your mobile carrier can't make any changes. No new devices, no new numbers, and no SIM swaps. This is a powerful and easy tip because it provides a clear and tangible benefit. You're protecting your phone number, which is often the first line of defense for your most important accounts. By taking just a few minutes to set up your secure PIN, you put in a central shield between you and a determined attacker. Well, that's all for our seventh episode. Thanks for joining me on this visit to Ember and Bean and for taking a small step to secure digital life. We'll be back next week with another great small business and a new tip. Until then, stay safe and keep sipping.
