Most insurance posts sound the same, which is why they get ignored. We’re flipping the script by showing how story—your origin, your team, and your community presence—turns passive scrollers into clients who stick around even when rates move. If you’ve ever wondered what to share beyond “Get a free quote,” this conversation lays out a simple, repeatable approach that feels good and works.

We start with the foundation: what buyers actually want to know before they trust you with their policies. If you’re rooted in your town, say it plainly—schools, neighborhoods, or local causes you support. If you were placed in a new city, bring people into your journey, explain why you chose to stay, and highlight what you’ve learned from serving local families. Then we get tactical with team spotlights that build recognition, so clients can match names to faces before they walk in. You’ll hear ideas for celebrating milestones, licensing wins, and everyday moments of service, all without oversharing or sounding salesy.

From there, we dig into content that looks real and feels human. Quarterly branding shoots give you months of authentic photos: working at the desk, greeting visitors, helping during claims. Pair each image with a micro-story to teach, reassure, and invite replies. We also map out easy community activations—snow cone days, teacher lunches, game sponsorships—that show up in feeds and in hearts. To make it stick, we connect storytelling to a crisp service flow: fast replies, clear timelines, and warm onboarding that reinforces why people chose you. The result is a marketing engine that builds recall, earns referrals, and supports retention when premiums change.

Hey, what's up guys? It is Shelby here, the marketing broker with the marketing. No, I say it wrong every time. The insurance marketing playbook podcast. I mentioned this podcast in a speaking engagement that I had last week and I laughed really hard because I literally never say it out loud except for when I start these. And whenever I said it, I just got it all wrong every single time. The only reason why it's called this is literally because of SEO stuff. And so it's hard for me to be able to say it all the time. But, anyways, we may just call this the uh insurance marketing podcast or something like that. Insurance marketing. Anyways, welcome to this week's episode, guys. I'm so glad you tuned back in. Y'all are showing up and showing out on these downloads. I freaking love that. So thank you so, so much. I want to talk about the importance today of storytelling to drive your sales. I know insurance is all about sales, right? Usually we can get those people in the door or we can get them on the phone, we can give them a free review, we can give them a free quote. And once they say yes, they'll stay with us for a while until rates change. It's always when rates are changing, is when you probably lose or gain new customers for your insurance company. So, how can we use storytelling in our marketing to make sure that we continuously have those leads coming in? We've talked about purchasing leads, we've talked about organic leads, and so now I want to talk about how we can use your story as a business and as a business owner to really market to your community. Insurance agents are very should be, at least if you are not, you should be very community oriented. You should be involved in the chamber, you should be involved in giving back at the holidays or all the all year long. I want to see that you're at the school providing lunches or pizza for the teachers. I want to see you out there in the parades. Like it's so important. And why is that? Because insurance is no fun. And I really hope that made you laugh because insurance is not a fun topic. We do marketing for several insurance agents across the United States, and it's not the most fun thing to actually um create content for. And I'm sure you've probably understood that by now. Because you're like, hey, how can I mix it up? I'm gonna listen to this girl on this marketing podcast. So I think that the main thing you should be doing marketing-wise is storytelling, telling your story. Are you from the community that you are in? Tell people about it. If it's on your if you have a website, I want that information on the website. I want people to know that you were raised there, that you continuously stay there, your family's there, your kids are in the local schools, whatever it is, that part is very important to people. In such a digital age nowadays, we have to go back to that personal connection to people when we are selling. Because if we just completely skip that part, then they're not gonna feel connected to us. So that's how we mix the two together. That's how we mix digital, as well as that personal connection is by storytelling. So let me talk to you if you are not from the community that you were placed in. Like I know a lot of state farm and shelter agents, maybe um other like Allstate, they may also put people in cities that they're not from. It's very important to tell people who you are and educate them about you, your family, where you guys um grew up at. Maybe tell a little bit of a backstory of how you got into insurance. And if you really want to take it to that next level, then start including the stories of your team. Who are the people that they see when they come in the door? What is that girl or guy's name? What so they can recognize their face before they go in there. I want you to recognize your employees on social media when it comes to anniversaries or birthdays or things that they maybe they got a new license, so you need to celebrate them. But that's the stuff that people want to see on your page as an insurance agency because they don't want to always see like, yo, let us give you a free auto quote, man, or hey, life insurance is important. You're gonna die one day, so we want to make sure that we can help you with that. People kind of already understand that, but they want that connection to you because it's an it's a personal thing. If they're gonna buy life insurance from you, then they need to know who you are. It's like when you choose a bank to go to or when you choose somebody to help you invest your money in the future. That's what life insurance is. As you know, it's an investment. So those people need to know who you are. If you're an agent, you need to be in the office as much as possible, especially for walk-in traffic. And so that way people can be like, oh yeah, they were there, and that was so nice. It was nice to see them and understand them and get to know them a little bit, and oh, they're so friendly, that kind of stuff. So I want you to work on storytelling about you and your team. Another way you can do that without outright going, like, hey, I'm Shelby. I'm from Little Rock, Arkansas, and this is what my daughter looks like. Okay, we want to make sure that we're being a little creative about it. If you um do branding shoots, which I recommend, I want you to have pictures done with your team working in the office. So that way when you are creating that social media content, you can use pictures that are real. They're not all stock images, they're not from the big agency that you work for, they aren't branded with their stuff. It's you, the local agent, that's competing for the attention of the community. And I always recommend let's do like quarterly events. Like, how can you give back to the community? Can you do a snow cone day? Um, can you go give stuff to school one day? Can you sponsor a football game or something like that? Like, how are you giving back to the community? Because that's important for people when they want to do business with you. If you think about it, you are probably the same way. I know I am. When I'm trying to do business with someone, I want to know how are they involved? What are they doing? If they're doing stuff at my kids' school, I'm 100% gonna choose them over anybody else any day. So if you do use your storytelling to get marketing leads through social media, I want you to go back and listen to why cus my podcast episode about why customer service is so important and what that process looks like because we can't keep generating leads and doing great at our social media if we can't retain the customers that we already have and gather from that. All right, guys, if you want to learn more about marketing for your insurance agency, you can go to the insurance marketing playbook podcast dot com.
