What would you do if you suddenly lost your sense of smell for 2 years? Couldn't taste your food properly? Felt like one of life's great pleasures had been stolen from you?

That's exactly what happened to today's client - a 41-year-old mum who lost her sense of smell completely after developing pneumonia following her second birth. She tried everything. Nothing worked. Until homeopathy.

In this case study episode, I'm sharing:

  • What caused her loss of smell (and why her birth trauma mattered)
  • The main homeopathic remedy that finally brought her sense of smell back
  • Why her emotional healing had to come before physical healing
  • How long the process actually took (spoiler: not overnight, but it worked!)
  • What constitutional homeopathy looks at that conventional medicine misses

This case really shows you how constitutional treatment is different. We don't just treat the symptom in front of us - we look at your whole history, including past traumas and emotional state, because everything is connected.

It took 10 prescriptions over many months, but her sense of smell fully returned and has stayed stable. If you've lost your sense of smell after illness, pregnancy, or Covid and nothing's worked, this episode will give you hope that healing IS possible.

Hello and welcome to the Homeopath in Your Pocket, where I help busy working mums discover how to support their family's health with confidence. Hi, I'm your host, Neila Prabhu, a licensed homeopath with 20 years of experience as a pharmacist. As a mum of two girls, I totally understand the juggle of family life firsthand. Each week, I'll share practical, actionable tips that you can use today to support your family's well-being. So let's get started. Today I'm sharing a real case study. A 41-year-old mum who lost her sense of smell for two years, and this happened after two traumatic births and postpartum pneumonia. It took 10 prescriptions, but her sense of smell has been fully returned, and I want to show you what constitutional homeopathy looks like in practice. So let's get started. So when I first met my client, she was 41, she'd lost her sense of smell completely a month after her second child had been born. She couldn't taste food properly, and this was absolutely miserable because food is one of our great pleasures. She couldn't even smell her son's dirty nappy. So she'd walk into a room and didn't realize that he had done a poo, and her husband would follow her and he would say, Oh, can't you smell that? And she couldn't. So, a small part about her history. So the first pregnancy, she was 36, she developed hypertension, so high blood pressure, which developed into pre-eclampsia, which obviously can be serious. So there was lots of fear present during her pregnancy. She was induced, and this caused her amniotic sac to be punctured. This unfortunately resulted in sepsis. So this there was a very real fear of baby and mum dying. So an emergency C-section was performed. So mum and baby were alive, but she didn't see the baby for two days. Baby was taken to SCABU, which is special care baby unit. It was very traumatic. Her second pregnancy, she was 38, and of course that fear reared its ugly head because she didn't want another bad experience. So she developed pre-eclampsia again, and but this time they had a planned C-section because they didn't want the trauma that they'd had the first time. Four weeks postpartum, she then developed pneumonia. So this was severe rib and chest pain with a very phlegmy cough, and she then lost her sense of smell at the same time. So AE diagnosed pneumonia and she was given antibiotics. But a month later, having recovered from the pneumonia, her sense of smell was still not there. She'd also developed a brown pigmentation on her cheekbones. So in one-to-one homeopathic work, we don't just treat the symptom, we look at the whole person and the whole history of why their symptoms appeared because past traumas affect current health. So this client's fear, trauma, and grief were all relevant to her loss of smell. So the main remedy that was given was Nap mue. After the first prescription, there was no real change to the loss of smell or pigmentation. Her sleep quality was much better. Emotionally, she felt calmer, and she told me that she felt really good emotionally. So this was a sign the remedy was working. After the second prescription, she had a few seconds of being able to smell unpleasant smells, for example, her son's nappy, but it didn't last, and there was no change to pigmentation on her face, but it was a small glimmer of hope. After the third prescription, she could smell everything, but it was only sporadic. It wasn't maintained. It was mainly first thing in the morning, and then it faded as the day progressed. She was also trying cranial osteopathy, which did help, but it only stayed for about one day, and there was no change in the pigmentation. There was progress even if it was inconsistent. After the fourth prescription, she can smell more frequently even in the middle of the night, so things have definitely improved, and unpleasant smells were now stronger, but there was no change to the pigmentation on her face. After the fifth prescription, she can now smell everything. However, she was very low due to overwhelming work stress, and this was really playing on her mind. After her sixth prescription, the loss of smell had relapsed, so it was now back to on and off. She could only smell mild smells, so things like essential oils, for a few days at a time, which was frustrating for the client and for me. After her seventh prescription, the loss of smell had relapsed again, so it was less intense and only for a few hours at a time. So I decided to detox her again. After her eighth prescription, she can smell everything quite strongly. They'd gone on holiday as a family, and she felt bombarded with perfumes in duty free at the airport, and she said this felt really good. The intensity was 10 out of 10, her sense of smell was back to normal, and food was tasting better too, so this was a big win. After the ninth prescription, her sense of smell diminished again, but only for the last week. So I decided to detox her again but more frequently, to do this weekly instead of monthly. And after the tenth prescription, the last month was a temporary blip, and her sense of smell returned and has remained stable for over a month now, even when the remedies ran out, and even when they went on holiday again as a family. So this was an amazing result. So this case study teaches us that healing isn't linear. The client's sense of smell came back gradually. There were also relapses that needed to be managed by me adjusting the treatment and the remedies, and that's normal in one-to-one constitutional cases. It isn't a sign that the treatment isn't working, the body is working through the layers, and the homeopath myself needs to adjust as we go along. So the client's sense of smell had been gone for about two years, but it took multiple prescriptions to get the right combination, but it was worth it in the end. So if the client had continued with conventional medicine, their treatment was smell training. So you get a lemon or you find a picture of a lemon and then you remember the smell of the lemon. So that wasn't really working. Um but this is why you need professional homeopathic help to make adjustments along the way, understand what the relapses are, and know when to adjust the detox protocol. So we're still working on her hyperpigmentation. That is still taking a little bit longer to heal. But the deep trauma from her births, the emotional and the physical, the homeopathic remedies have helped to address this. So what are the key takeaways? If you've lost your sense of smell, which can happen after pneumonia, COVID, viral infections, even if it's gone for years, it can be restored. But it needs constitutional treatment, not just acute remedies. If you've had traumatic births, past trauma affects current health. So it's worth addressing even years later as the body holds on to those experiences, both physically, mentally, and emotionally. And if you're considering working with a homeopath, this is what it looks like in practice: regular prescriptions, adjustments and patience, and communication from me throughout. I was supporting her, especially when things didn't go as expected. So wrapping up, this client's sense of smell was fully restored after two years. It took 10 prescriptions and multiple adjustments, but things are now stable and she can smell everything and food tastes good again. We're still working on the pigmentation on her face, but this shows the power of constitutional homeopathic treatment.
