Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Imagine being 13 years old and starting your periods, only to experience such excruciating pain that you can't get out of bed. Every single month. For 5 years.
That's exactly what happened to today's client. In this case study episode, I'm sharing the journey of an 18-year-old university student who suffered with 9/10 period pain from the moment she started menstruating. Within one month of treatment, her pain dropped to 3/10. By month 7, she was pain-free.
However, this case also taught me one of my biggest lessons as a homeopath - and I'm sharing it openly for transparency.
What you'll learn:
- How constitutional homeopathy addresses painful periods from the root
- What an "aggravation" is in homeopathy and why it happens
- Why healing sometimes looks like things getting worse before better
- The importance of working with an experienced homeopath for complex cases
- How to support teenagers through painful periods naturally
This episode is perfect for you if: You suffer with painful periods, your daughter is struggling with period pain, you're curious about homeopathy but worried about "aggravations," you want to understand what working with a homeopath really looks like (including when things don't go perfectly), or you're considering constitutional treatment for menstrual issues.
Painful periods are NOT normal. Even if you've had them for years, they can be resolved.

Hello and welcome to the Homeopath in Your Pocket, where I help busy working mums discover how to support their family's health with confidence. Hi, I'm your host, Neila Prabhu, a licensed homeopath with 20 years of experience as a pharmacist. As a mum of two girls, I totally understand the juggle of family life firsthand. Each week, I'll share practical, actionable tips that you can use today to support your family's well-being. So let's get started. So today I'm going to be talking about a case study about painful periods. For an 18-year-old university student, she had suffered from excruciating period pain from the age of 13. Her pain level was 9 out of 10 every single month, but within a month of treatment, it had dropped to 3 out of 10. By month seven, she was essentially pain-free. However, this case also taught me one of my biggest lessons: how I made a mistake, I learned from it, and I still achieved a great result. So I'm sharing it openly for transparency. So when I first met my client, she was 18 years old, she'd just started university, and she was suffering with excruciating period pain, as I said, since the age of 13. So her symptoms were lower back pain, lower abdominal pain. The pain extended into her legs and thighs, and it was absolutely agonizing. She had to be in bed with a hot water bottle, which was essential for any sort of relief, and it was the only thing that helped. So the impact on her life was missing school regularly. She couldn't attend social events, she was unable to function during each and every period, and it had a major impact on her life as a whole. Her bleeding pattern was inconsistent. It was stopping and starting, and it wasn't a regular predictable flow, which also added to the frustration. So her history, she had a C-section birth and she started her periods age 13. So they came to see me because she was desperate for help. She was starting university and she didn't want to miss lectures every month. She wanted to live a normal life. Conventional medicine had offered her painkillers and the contraceptive pill, but she didn't want synthetic hormones. So the main remedy given was sepia, which is a brilliant remedy for period pain because it incorporates the dragging sensation, the pain extending down her legs and thighs, irritability, and wanting to be alone. After her first prescription, the period pain had reduced from 9 out of 10 to 3 out of 10. So that's a 66% decrease, and the pain was now dull rather than sharp, and it was a massive difference. She managed her the rest of her pain with the menstrual cramp mix that I gave her. Her bleeding was now consistent rather than stopping starting, and she was thrilled, as was I. And it looked like a quick, easy case. However, things changed from month two to month five. So the pain was still only one out of ten, so barely there, and this result was maintained throughout. But the heavy bleeding, which was during her period, didn't stop. The client was a bit worried, so I reassured and I sent out new remedies. But what actually was happening was I'd given quite a high dose of sepia, and for this client it was too much and had caused an aggravation. So what is an aggravation? In homeopathy, sometimes symptoms temporarily worsen before improving. It is a sign that the body is responding to the remedy, and it usually lasts a few days up to a week, and then improvement follows. But if the dose is really wrong, the aggravation can last a lot longer, and that's exactly what happened here. So between months two to five, the client was really struggling. The client was bleeding for quite a few days with only a short break in between, sometimes just one or two days. So her cycle length had reduced from 36 days down to just 14 days and sometimes shorter. Sometimes there was barely any gap between her periods, and she was almost constantly bleeding. She was exhausted and frustrated, and she'd spent a fortune on menstrual pads. She couldn't observe fasting for Ramadan, and this really upset her. And all of this while dealing with her first year at university, trying to study, make friends, and settle in. So, how did I deal with this? I spoke to my client at least every two weeks for support. I was checking in, sending new remedies as needed, and the main priority was to stop the bleeding and to reset her pattern back to her regular cycle. This process took a good two months. I consulted other more experienced homeopaths for advice, and I sent various different remedies to both her home address and her university address. The client's mother came on board for meetings so that she could gain clarity and provide support. But the client was feeling very frustrated. She'd wasted a lot of money on pads, she was questioning whether homeopathy was working, however, she did stay with the treatment upon the insistence of her mother. My feelings were that I was very frustrated with myself. I should have it should have worked as it had done before with many other clients, but it was part of my learning experience, and I was determined to help her. So month six, the cycles finally started lengthening to 19 days, and after about five months of irregular bleeding, we had some bleed-free days in between the periods, and this was kind of the light at the end of the tunnel. Month seven, her cycle length was now about 25 days, so much more normal, and her bleeding pattern was three or four days of bleeding, and then no more bleeding until her next period. The pain was now mild discomfort. It didn't affect her day-to-day activities, and she didn't even need the menstrual cramp mix anymore, let alone the hot water bottle and being curled up in bed like a prawn. So the client did achieve her goal, which was regular periods without excruciating pain. So, what did I learn from this case? My mistake was I gave too high a dose of sepia for this client. It caused an aggravation that lasted months. So I should have started lower and increased the dose gradually if needed. So why am I sharing this openly? I could have pretended that this case was smooth sailing. However, that's not being honest. I made a mistake and I learned from it, but the client still achieved a good result. So it shows that even when things don't go perfectly, homeopathy still works if you persevere. So this taught me to start with lower doses and adjust gradually. And if needed, consult more experienced colleagues when things are going wrong. And communication with the client is essential as honesty builds trust. It's certainly given me a newfound respect for the remedy CPI. So for anyone with painful periods, five years of excruciating pain can be resolved. One-to-one homeopathic treatment addresses the root cause, it doesn't just mask the symptoms. And this client went from nine out of ten pain to essentially pain-free within seven months. If you're a teenager or a young woman with painful periods, you don't just have to put up with it. It's not normal to be in agony every month, and natural options are available. And you don't have to go on the pill if you don't want synthetic hormones. So if you're considering working with a homeopath, aggravations are rare. This is the first time in seven years this has happened for me. Things don't always go perfectly smoothly, and that's okay. A good homeopath will adjust the treatment as needed and communicate honestly throughout the process. So wrapping up, this client did achieve her goal, regular periods without excruciating pain. But it took seven months and we had challenges along the way. It was a big learning curve for me and the client. She was incredibly patient and trusting. But I'm confident that her cycles will now continue in the normal fashion without pain. Painful periods are not normal. They're common but not normal. But they can be resolved even after years of having that pain.
