Children often say the funniest things, but their timing can be a bit awkward! The mouth is where digestion starts and it's how we express ourselves the most. When something goes wrong in there - it affects everything.

If you've got a teething baby who won't stop crying, a child with a painful cold sore that keeps coming back, or you're dreading an upcoming tooth extraction, this episode gives you natural solutions that actually work.

Today I'm covering 4 common oral issues in children and what to do about them naturally. No conventional painkillers that barely work - just safe, effective remedies you can use right now.

In this episode, you'll discover:

  • Why cold sores keep coming back and the specific foods that stop them in their tracks
  • The simple home remedy for sore throats (involves ice cubes!)
  • My number one teething remedy that gives real relief for baby AND you
  • What to use for toothache when it's red and throbbing
  • The remedies to take before and after dental work (dentists are often surprised how well children heal with these)
  • A special remedy for "easy" tooth extractions
  • What to use if bleeding won't stop after dental work

Here's something fascinating: the mouth heals faster than most parts of your body. It's a relatively sterile environment thanks to constant fresh saliva. Homeopathic remedies support this natural healing process - safely and gently.

Most of the remedies I'm mentioning today are already in the Blue Kit, which means you're covered for pretty much every oral issue your child might face.

If you're tired of watching your child suffer with mouth pain and want natural alternatives that work, listen to this episode.

Hello and welcome to the Homeopath in Your Pocket, where I help busy working mums discover how to support their family's health with confidence. Hi, I'm your host, Neila Prabhu, a licensed homeopath with 20 years of experience as a pharmacist. As a mum of two girls, I totally understand the juggle of family life firsthand. Each week I'll share practical, actionable tips that you can use today to support your family's well-being. So let's get started. Digestion starts in the mouth, and it's also how we express ourselves the most. But what happens when something goes wrong? It can affect everything. So today I'll be sharing four common oral ailments and what to do about them. So why does your mouth matter? The mouth is the gateway to the body, it's where the digestion process starts, it's how we communicate, how we express love, joy, and frustration. But when our mouths are painful, everything becomes harder. So children can't always articulate where it hurts, especially when they're very young. But you know that something is wrong. They can obviously point to their mouth. They can also become clingy, upset, they might not be able to eat. So the good news is minor issues in the mouth heal really quickly because it's a relatively sterile environment. There's a constant supply of fresh saliva washing over everything, and this contributes to the natural healing process. Homeopathy can help to support this. So, number one, cold sores. So cold sores are small fluid-filled blisters that appear on the edge of lips. They're caused by the herpes simplex virus, and they're often painful and sore. So the virus often remains dormant and it lives in the body, and it can then get triggered, and that's when it becomes active. So some common triggers are bright sunlight, being run down after a period of illness, stress, hormonal changes, any time when your immunity is low. For children, it can be really distressing. It hurts to eat, drink, or smile, and it often looks unsightly, so other children might comment, and that can cause them to be self-conscious and maybe a bit embarrassed about it. Lysine-rich foods can really help. So eating these helps to decrease the severity of cold sores. So red meat, parmesan cheese, eggs, and soybeans are all high in lysine. Lysine works because it blocks arginine, and arginine is an amino acid that the virus feeds on. So therefore, the lysine starves the virus, so it reduces the severity and the duration. The remedy that I would recommend homeopathically, which is in my blue kit, is rustox. It's very helpful when there's an itching-burning sensation and when there are fluid-filled blisters, and it works beautifully. Number two, sore throats. So this can feel like pain on swallowing or a sensation of a lump in the throat. It's very unpleasant for children and they don't understand why it hurts. So causes of this can be viral infections, bacterial infections, postnasal drip, and mouth breathing. So what can help to soothe it? Warm soup, so it soothes the throat, it's easy to swallow and it's nourishing too. Sucking ice cubes can also help alleviate the pain because it can temporarily numb the area. Children often prefer this to warm things, and you can make it fun, add some food colouring or natural fruit colour to the ice cubes. The number one remedy I'd recommend, which is in my blue kit, is Mercurias or Mercviv. It's fantastic for sore throats, particularly when there's a lot of saliva, and you may even have a metallic taste in your mouth, and it can be worse at night time. Number three is teething. So teething can be a very trying time for babies and parents alike, and it can go on for months. Sometimes multiple teeth are coming through at the same time. So babies dribble constantly, they want to bite down on something hard, they'll put lots of things in their mouth to try and bite down and ease that pain. What they're wanting is to kind of break the gum so that the tooth can come through easier. They can have red cheeks, they can have disturbed sleep, sometimes with a fever as well, and they can have loose nappies as well. So cool teething rings kept in the fridge, not the freezer, so they're not too cold. Baby can bite down on that safely, and the cold temporarily numbs the pain. So have a few so that you always have one that's clean and cool. Babies also like to chew on a cold wet flannel, chilled cucumber sticks if they're eating solids, or your own clean finger to bite on. My number one teething remedy, which is in my blue kit, is chamomila. It gives real relief for baby and for you, and many parents swear by this. Your classic camomilla picture is the baby will have one cheek that is red and one cheek that is pale. Baby will be very angry and irritable and wants to be carried constantly. Right, before I continue, I want to talk to any mums out there whose child has visible eczema because this one is for you. A little boy came to me who had just started primary school with dry, cracked eczema on his hands, fingers and the back of his knees. It was so severe he literally couldn't bend his fingers without the skin cracking and bleeding. He was embarrassed about it at school. Recep other reception children were pointing and asking questions. Which does break your heart a little bit. His mum described the remedies after the first appointment like magic. Within three weeks his skin was a lot better. By eight weeks he was 75% better, sleeping in his own bed every night, more confident, and the redness was only occasional. I have the before and after pictures on my website. If you want to see just how dramatic the difference was, go ahead, go and have a look. I'm Neela, an award-winning homeopath with 20 years experience as a pharmacist and over 35-star Google reviews. If your child's skin has been a constant battle and nothing seems to clear it, let's chat. Please book a free 15-minute discovery call with me. The link is in the show notes. Now back to the episode. So teething is obviously very painful for babies, but it is very trying for parents as well. You can be even more sleep deprived. It's distressing watching your baby in pain and feeling helpless, and it can go on for ages. So that's why having chamomila in your corner is a game changer. Number four, toothache and tooth extraction. So toothache can really be excruciating. It stops you from eating, sleeping, and children can't always say where it hurts. They just know their mouth is painful. So clove oil can really ease toothache until you can see the dentist. You can dab it on the affected area, use a cotton bud to be really precise, and it has natural anesthetic properties. You can dilute it in a carrier oil because the taste can be quite strong. So if the area of the toothache is red and throbbing, I would use Belladonna. This is in my blue kit and it's great for sudden onset when the face can feel hot and red, and it's often worse at night time. Before going to a dental appointment, Arnica is great for bruising and shock. It's also in my blue kit and it helps the body cope with trauma. So, dental appointments themselves, children can often be anxious, and that's totally understandable. No one really likes going to the dentist, you're quite vulnerable, and often there is pain involved. So Arnica can help with the emotional shock, not just the physical. I'm going to mention a special remedy here for tooth extraction. So contact me if you'd like to get this. It's called Emerald and it's really good for tooth extractions. It can help them to be easier, which means less trauma, quicker healing, and dentists are often surprised how easily the tooth comes out. If there is bleeding after a tooth has been extracted, phosphorus from my white amplify kit is great for post-dental bleeding. If the bleeding doesn't stop or it keeps starting again, that's when you would use phosphorus. So why these remedies matter is dental work is traumatic for children. So reducing that trauma can mean a better experience for everyone, and perhaps less fear for the next time they go to the dentist. The quicker it heals, there's going to be less pain afterwards as well. So many parents contact me before their child's dental appointment wanting remedies to support them, and the feedback is always positive. The children cope much better, and the dentists often comment on how well they heal. So the mouth's natural healing, I mentioned at the beginning. So the mouth heals faster than most body parts because there is fresh saliva constantly washing over everything. So therefore, it's a relatively sterile environment, and saliva has natural antibacterial properties. So this means that minor cuts, ulcers, blisters will heal quickly. The body designed the mouth to heal fast, which makes sense because we need it to eat. So homeopathy's role in this is that it supports the body's natural healing processes. It can speed up this process and reduce pain, all the while being safe and natural. So the remedies that I mentioned from the blue kit: rustox for cold sores, mercurias for sore throats, chamomilla for teething, belladonna for a toothache if it's red and throbbing, and Arnica before and after dental work. From my amplify kit, phosphorus for post-dental bleeding, and emerald for easy tooth extractions. Emerald is not in my amplify kit, contact me separately for that one. So, most of those remedies are in the blue kit already. It's currently £40 and it covers most oral issues, and the Amplify kit extends that range. So having both of them means you're covered for everything. So what are your action steps today after listening to today's episode? Number one, get the blue kit if you don't already have it. It's essential for families with children and it contains most of the remedies mentioned today. Step two, consider getting the amplify kit as well. It contains the phosphorus for the postdental bleeding. It's currently 17 pounds for the five additional remedies, and that extends what you can treat. Number three, keep clove oil in the house for toothache emergencies until you can get to the dentist because it gives you natural pain relief. And number four, stock up on lysine-rich foods if your child is prone to cold sores. So red meat, parmesan, eggs, and soybeans, because prevention is better than cure. Number five, have teething rings ready in the fridge so that you always have a clean cold one ready and it makes teething much easier for everyone. Number six, learn which remedy for which situation. So if you're wanting to learn deeper, my homeopathy module six teaches all of the Blue Kit remedies, which is currently a £35 online course so that you can treat your children confidently using the Blue Kit. And number seven, book a discovery call if you're struggling. If you have chronic issues with recurrent cold sores or ongoing dental issues, or you're wanting constitutional treatment to address the root cause. So wrapping up, the mouth is where digestion starts and it's how we express ourselves. Four common issues cold sores, sore throats, teething, toothache and tooth extraction. All of these are covered in this episode. The mouth heals quickly because of the constant supply of fresh saliva. My homeopathic blue kit contains most of the remedies I've mentioned and supports natural healing. It's safe, it's natural, it's effective, and there are no side effects.
