We fall hard for The Song Bird Of The Sorrows by Brady Otto, a romantic fantasy that mixes bird-centered world building with spies, assassins, and brutal bridal trials. We turn that mood into a bookish food pairing with a flourless chocolate cake and a toasted meringue topping, plus the baking lesson we learned the hard way.
• picking up a surprise read from an independent bookstore and judging a cover with zero regret
• quick spoiler-light setup of Princess Ayea, the aviary spy training, and the “songbird” assassin role
• why the bridal trials raise the stakes and deepen the tension around identity
• what to know about intense scenes, content warnings, and low-to-moderate spice
• the dessert match: dark, dense flourless chocolate cake topped with light, wispy meringue
• step by step method for the cake batter and meringue peaks
• why springform pans can destroy meringue if it touches the sides
• taste verdict and what topping we’d use next time

Welcome And The Pairing Concept

SPEAKER_00

Welcome to Novel and Notch, where books, food, travel, and the art of living fully come together. Today I wanted to share with you another food pairing. So anytime I read a book that I enjoy, if it's if I give it a four or a five star to, I it is my goal to create a food pairing just because it's something that I enjoy doing. I think it's fun and it's a creative concept. The problem for me, honestly, is I would love to do a flat light picture on Instagram and it never turns out kind of like this. So

Finding A Surprise Indie Book

SPEAKER_00

first I want to let you know the book that I read was called The Song Bird of the Sorrows by Brady Otto. This is a romantic and it is going to be a trilogy. So this is the first book within the trilogy. I ended up going to Orlando for a weekend with my family. We stopped off at an independent bookstore, and I always buy a book when I go to an indie bookstore. And this was one that was on the shelves. Had never heard anything about it, hadn't seen it on Instagram or TikTok or anything. It is an absolutely gorgeous cover. Um, and that is what completely sold me. I read the inside cover. I thought this sounds very interesting, picked it up, and was not disappointed. Oh, it also has beautiful sprayed edges. So

Princess Spy Turned Assassin Plot

SPEAKER_00

basically, what the story of that is about is um Princess Ai Aya, she was banished from the Palace of Sorrows when she was a child. She was provided the opportunity to go into the aviary, and the aviary works on teaching these orphan children how to be spies. And they go through this different process where they're going through challenges and everything, and they become these spies. Well, some of the elite spies will earn a place it as a songbird, and they will become assassins. Princess Ayea is provided that opportunity. So as an assassin, she ends up having to go on this quest because Prince Kyras, in I don't know if it's in another kingdom, I think in the Eastern Kingdom, is looking for a bride, but he wants to do this bridal trial to have all these young ladies who are princesses come to his land and compete to become his bride. Well, of course, Princess Ayea is going to pretend that she is Princess Ayea, and she goes to this kingdom to compete in the bridal trials. So hopefully that didn't terribly confuse you. She was banished as the princess from the Palace of Sorrows, but as she becomes this assassin, she is now pretending to be the princess of the Palace of Sorrows. And I loved it. I loved the world building. I loved how everything was around this bird culture. Everything in the society is very much around birds. I loved um the relationship she had with her fellow assassins who were pretending to be her maidservants. I love the relationship that she had with Raven. Um, he is another assassin. And I thought Brady Otto writes beautifully. I think she did a great job with this book, and I'm really excited to see what else transpires in this world. I

Trials Intensity And Spice Notes

SPEAKER_00

will say there is some intense scenes during the trials. So you might want to read the content warnings for that. I will say also that I do not remember it being too spicy. Usually I don't like a book with a lot of spice or a book that creates a jarring of fruit with spice. And I did not, I do not remember either of those experiences occurring. I think there was a little bit of spice, but it did not take away from the story or did not feel like it was just plopped in there. And it wasn't too spicy or carry on too long for it to make me think one way or another about it, if that makes sense. Because I'm not a big spice reader. So I would recommend, you know, if you're not a big spice reader, also, I think there, you know, I think this one is a good one.

Why A Flourless Cake Fits

SPEAKER_00

Now, what I wanted to do was I thought that because this is such a beautiful cover, but the book inside is intense and dark and decadent, it made me think of a decadent flowerless cake. And I found in a cookbook called Desserts by the Yard by Sherry Yard, there was a recipe for a flowerless chocolate cake with meringue topping. And I chose this because not only do the wisps of the meringue and the color of the meringue with these toasted um edges look like the cover of Songbird of Sorrows, but I also thought the fact that you had this light and fluffy, airy meringue on top, and then hidden underneath was this dense, dark, decadent, flowerless chocolate cake. I thought that would be a fun pairing. I will say that although I am a decent baker or a good baker, I guess, I can I know how to read recipe and I can bake a recipe and it always turns out good. I am not always the best with the outcome, the way it looks. And also when I try to do photography, I'm not great at photography. I'm getting better, but I'm not great.

The Meringue Mishap Explained

SPEAKER_00

But I will tell you that when I made this cake, it turned out beautiful. The problem was is the meringue broke because I'll explain to you that when you bake this cake, you can do it in a fluted tart pan or a springform pan. Well, I do have fluted tart pans, but mine are rectangular. So I wanted this one to be circular, so I put it in a springform pan. Those of you that are bakers probably already know what happened. The meringue was touching the springform pan. So when I went to take it apart, it pulled on the meringue and broke the meringue. So it was sliding off the cake if I did not keep the springform pan attached and closed. So I have no pictures, but I do want to let you know basically what I did with the um recipe.

Step By Step Cake And Meringue

SPEAKER_00

And if you want to go over to my YouTube channel under Novel and Nosh, you can watch the video so you can see the um me making this dish. But it is you first make the cake, you're going to um butter the pan. And then you are going to melt chocolate and butter in the mic in a microwave or in a double boiler. From there, in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment. You will beat together the eggs and the sugar on medium speed until pale, and the mixture is going to form a ribbon when lifted, when the um whisk is lifted from the bowl. Then you are going to beat in the cocoa powder and the chocolate mixture, and you're going to combine them well on low speed, and you will pour this into the prepared pan. There is no flour. This is a flourless cake, so remember it will be dense. When it comes out of the oven, you're going to bake that for 15 minutes at 350. When it comes out of the oven, it will usually fall a little bit in the center, and that is okay. And that is what it is kind of designed to do. From there, you are going to make the meringue, and you are going to beat the egg whites on low speed until foamy. You're going to add cream of tartar and your sugar. And you are going to make sure to gradually add the sugar in, and you will beat that mixture till it is forming stiff satiny peats. From there, you spoon the meringue onto the chocolate cake, and you're looking for wispy peats all over. And it is a ton. There are eight egg whites. So this is a lot of meringue. It's not just a little bit of meringue. This is a lot of meringue that is covering this flowerless chocolate cake. If you happen to put it in a springform pan, I would just make sure that you don't allow the meringue to touch the side. So as you look at your cake when it falls in the center, it creates a nice little hole for the meringue to go in. Use that. Don't go beyond. I don't know why I did. I just really wasn't thinking. And then you'll put that into the oven. You're going to bake for 12 to 15 minutes. You want it to have this light broiled look, you know, like the meringue should be a little bit browning on the edges. And that was the other reason. I absolutely love this idea because the colors looked really well with the songbird of sorrows cover, and the wispy peaks looked beautiful with the wispy feather-like plants or whatever they have in this cover. So that was where I was going with this. The

Taste Verdict And What’s Next

SPEAKER_00

cake was delicious. I will say that I'm not sure the meringue was necessary. I understand what they were doing. It was kind of like this juxtaposition, right? You've got this light, airy, fluffy thing on top, and then you've got this dense, dark, decadent deep flavor of the chocolate cake on bottom. I'm not sure they needed to go together. I don't think I would ever put meringue on a flowerless chocolate cake again. I think the appearance of it is beautiful, but unnecessary. I think some whipped cream on the top is just as pretty and hairs better with the cake than the meringue. That's my personal opinion. So I hope you enjoyed this episode. Um, in the weeks to come, we are talking summer books. So I will be giving you some listing of some summer books that you can look forward to reading. And I hope you enjoyed this. If you enjoy the concept of this food pairing, make sure to let me know because I know it's a little bit different. Uh, this is something I love, so therefore I wanted to share it with you as well. If you enjoyed this episode, make sure to let me know. And also if you've read Song Bird of Sorrows, I definitely want you to let me know that as well. You can head to novelinosh.com.
