Hey there, Pawson peeps. Welcome back to another episode of the Pawz to Profit podcast, where we turn puppy cuddles into profit and transform your dog sitting side hustle into a thriving business you absolutely love. I'm your host, Tanya Williams, Chief Pawson at 3 Sport Dogs and your go-to guide for all things dog biz.

00:20.59
Tanya williams
Now, today's episode is one that I know so many of you need to hear because see this mistake all the time when people start their dog sitting business or even if they've had a dog sitting business for a while and it's just not clicking how it should be.

00:36.63
Tanya williams
And that is you try to be everything to everyone or you try to offer everything to everyone. And guess what? When you do that, you just end up confusing your audience and exhausting yourself.

00:50.87
Tanya williams
So today I'm talking about how to decide what services to offer, why specialization is the key standing out, and how it all ties back to, you guessed it, your revenue and your long-term success. So grow a coffee, maybe pappuccino for the put fair baby and let's dive a So let's start with the classic track.

01:16.29
Tanya williams
Now, when you first start out, it's easy to think, oh, I'm going to do everything for everyone. And look, I think we've all been there, done that. Okay. I think when I first started, um I did to a certain degree. um I still didn't look after like big dogs because I just wasn't comfortable with them, but I was looking after all sorts of breeds and doing all sorts of stuff. Right.

01:33.41
Tanya williams
So, you know, you sort of, you know, it's a big learning curve to start out with and you just want to you know, do lots of bookings. So, know, you also might make the mistake of going, well, we do dog walking and we do daycare and overnights and house sitting and grooming and nail trims and parties and dog taxis and chaperone and services and blah, blah, blah. And you list whole bunch of stuff off and before you know it, you're running around like a headless joke trying to be all things to all dog owners.

01:57.51
Tanya williams
And guess what? When you try to please everyone, you actually please no one. So people don't buy broad. They buy specific.

02:09.30
Tanya williams
So think about it like this. If your dog has a skin condition, do you go to a general vet or do you go to a holistic skin specialist vet? Exactly. You're going to go to the specialist because that's what they specialize in.

02:23.08
Tanya williams
Okay. So you want to be seen as the expert in your particular area. Okay. um It's the same thing with dog sitting, right? When you specialize, people trust you more and you become that go-to person for a certain type of dog service or experience. So let me give you an example. So at Three Sport Dogs, we don't look after every dog under the sun. I say no often, okay?

02:46.13
Tanya williams
We specialize in oodles and small dogs. So kavoodles, spoodles, moodles, you know, all the fluffy, bougie, human identifying little divas that we love. um Why? Because that's who we understand and that's who we are comfortable with.

03:00.46
Tanya williams
We know their personalities. We know their grooming needs. We know they have sex often have separation anxiety issues. We know they love ah lots of cuddles and the air conditioning and being pampered.

03:11.75
Tanya williams
um you know And that's what we do because we know the breed and we know what small dogs are like. Okay, so because of that, our clients see us as the expert in that area because they know that we know what their dog needs. So instead of blending into a sea of everyone else, so all those other dog sitters that are all doing the exact same thing, um whether it's on a third-party app or elsewhere, you know, you blend into everybody else.

03:38.50
Tanya williams
But we became the luxury oodle paucation specialist because that's the service that we offer. And that, my dear friends, is where the magic and the money happens.

03:50.32
Tanya williams
So let's start with how you find your zone of genius. So how do you actually decide what services to offer? Now, this is a really good exercise that can help you find what I call your zone of genius. So grab a pen or your notes app whatever you're comfortable with and jot down these things, okay?

04:08.31
Tanya williams
So I want you to ask yourself three simple questions. First one is, what do I love doing the most? So maybe you adore having lots of dogs in your home because you love the company or maybe you prefer going to clients' homes for that flexibility or maybe you just love going out and exercising him with the dogs.

04:27.63
Tanya williams
So what is it that you love doing most? That's the first thing to note down. You might have a couple of things on that list but what's the number one and maybe number two or three? What fits your lifestyle best is the second thing I want you to think about.

04:40.42
Tanya williams
So if you live in an apartment, maybe overnight dog boarding doesn't make as much sense, but dog walking or drop-ins drop-ins could be where you could be focusing. But if you've got a big yard or a big area and um a chill home vibe, maybe daycare might be good for you.

04:56.14
Tanya williams
So think about your lifestyle and your home and the environment that you're in as well, because that's going to help you decide what it is you need to serve offer as a service. And then the third one is what's profitable and scalable.

05:10.70
Tanya williams
So you don't want to offer something that burns you out or gives you peanuts. And, you know, you might decide you want to do dog walking, but what is it you can do differently to what other dog walkers are doing that could be more premium or could be more specialty um that will pay you well?

05:26.36
Tanya williams
um And is it something where you offer a premium service where it is one-on-one, um, So they pay a little bit more for that or whatever. So you've got to think about those types of things. um And there's three areas that you need to consider. What you love doing, what fits your lifestyle and your environment, and what's profitable and scalable.

05:45.62
Tanya williams
So I hope you've got all those written down. Um, so then you need sort of combine that and have a look for the overlap. So what are the overlaps in there? are there certain services that, um, come up in all three of those areas?

05:59.83
Tanya williams
If there are, then guess what? That could be your service focus zone. Um, so that's a really simple way of deciding what's going to be a right fit for you. Cause what you don't want to do, right? Is go,

06:10.93
Tanya williams
Hey, great, we're going to do um overnight dog boarding because a couple of people have asked us to do that. But when you start doing that, you're finding that you don't really enjoy enjoy it or you don't like having dogs in your home or um you've got complaints from neighbours because you're in a small apartment or whatever it might be. And there's no point in scaling that up and building that sort of part side of your business if you're having issues with it or if you're just not enjoying it. So that's why you need to be really clear from day one, um if you can be, what are the services that you offer? Now, you don't need to offer 10 services. If you want to offer 10 services down the track when you are scaled and maybe have people working for you and whatever else, then then consider it then. But don't start with offering too many things at once.

06:54.27
Tanya williams
It's just going to confuse people. um You just want to have the right one or two things or services that match your strengths, your space and your business goals.

07:05.15
Tanya williams
So you might say, well, for example, you know, after doing the exercise, your right mix look like might look like daycare for dashies and maybe a dashy social for puppies um or something like that. So you do a couple of different things, but it's related to a particular brand or whatever that might be. So get creative with it, um but also think about those really most important factors, which are those three.

07:28.76
Tanya williams
But get clear. um so you know, figure out what's fun and what's profitable. Boom. And there is your focus zone. Okay. We don't need to overcomplicate this stuff, guys. We don't need to, you know, do big massive lists and pros and cons of this and blah, blah.

07:45.83
Tanya williams
They're the three key areas that you should be thinking about. Okay. Now, Why is specialization the secret sauce? Like it really will make a huge difference to the success of your business.

07:59.37
Tanya williams
So it's not just a nice thing to have. It is essential because when you specialize, you become memorable. So people remember the oodle lady or the puppy sleepover queen.

08:11.49
Tanya williams
They don't remember generic dog business ah number 47. Like you just blend in with everybody else. Okay. So you want to be memorable. If you have a specialization, You will be memorable. People will know you for your specialization.

08:26.07
Tanya williams
You're also going to attract the dream client. So you'll get people who actually value your service, not those that are shopping around for the cheapest sitter. And we see that often. um We don't get a lot here, thankfully, because I think the way that our messaging is done and our um our socials and our and our images and all that sort of stuff, it doesn't say cheap.

08:45.99
Tanya williams
doesn't say super expensive either, but it doesn't say cheap. And you get what you pay for. Our pricing is on our website. So if you want to pay $25 for someone to come and look after your dog, um then we're not the right people to talk to.

08:58.90
Tanya williams
It's a totally different experience to what you're going to get for ah for your money. So, you know, when you are a specialist in an area, you're going to attract the people that want that type of specialization.

09:10.20
Tanya williams
And our clients love the fact that we only have oodles and small dogs because they know that their dog is going to be around similar dogs to them. Okay. You can also charge more because you are the expert or you are the special person in that space.

09:25.23
Tanya williams
um You know, so, you know, there's no reason why you can't charge a bit more of a premium for that. So, you know, you've got, you going to you know, you should be having systems and standards and experiences that feel more premium because you are a specialist.

09:38.12
Tanya williams
And then people who are going to refer the right type of dogs to you as well. So if they know that you only look after a certain breed or a certain type of dog, then guess who they're going to refer to you? A certain breed and a certain type of dog.

09:50.13
Tanya williams
So we get referrals from Oodle owners um to other Oodle owners. So all the time. So straight up, it's a match of dog type. Okay. So we've already sort of partly qualified them because they know that we look after Oodles. They've got an Oodle. Therefore, there's a match there.

10:06.27
Tanya williams
So what found when i went three sport dogs um shifted the focus, so when I went from being on a third party app and sort of, you know, looking after lots of different types of dogs to actually really being focused on oodles and small dogs, what it did was it really became clear in our messaging and our marketing that we only do oodles and small dogs.

10:26.19
Tanya williams
And we didn't lose clients because of that. Okay. You might think, oh, but if I do that, I'm going to lose clients. We had the opposite. We actually gained better clients because they were a better fit client.

10:36.87
Tanya williams
They were prepared to pay um the prices that we were asking. They were happy. We were happy. The dogs were happy. Everyone wins. And because people will pay a premium rate because they knew and they knew that their dog was safe and it was cared for and surrounded by other dogs like it, right?

10:53.51
Tanya williams
And that has a ripple effect because once you get known for something, Marketing gets so much easier as well because you are talking, um you know, using similar messaging and similar images and you look at an Instagram feed and it's all similar types of dogs.

11:09.25
Tanya williams
um It could becomes clearer and easier to market your business because you know exactly who you are talking to. You're not talking to every single dog owner out there. You are talking to owners of a particular type of dog.

11:23.07
Tanya williams
ah So then you can use their sorts of, you know, messaging um and, the you know, the way that they talk and talk to their to the to the problems that their dogs have and all that sort of stuff. So things become so much easier.

11:34.07
Tanya williams
Your website copy becomes clearer. Your Instagram bio pops. You know, that word of mouth will skyrocket because people know exactly who to refer to you. And you hear this so much in business. And I know when I was, you know, running my marketing but business full time, people go, well, who is it that you want to have as a client?

11:52.19
Tanya williams
And you sometimes have to think about it and go, well, I can help these people and I can help these people. and i can But it becomes too hard for people to refer to you. You had to be very specific. And I work with businesses that do this or need this.

12:04.05
Tanya williams
It's the same with anything that you do, in particular dog sitting. When you are a specialist, people know, like and trust you and that's what you do. I get referrals all the time from friends and family and and clients.

12:17.47
Tanya williams
They go, oh, talk to Tanya. She's the Oodle person. um You know, she, that's all they have. We love that about her. They rave about our services. So, you know, ah they're doing all the work for me, which is fantastic.

12:30.30
Tanya williams
Now, let's talk about impact on your revenue. So the juicy part, the money part, right? So when you get clear on your niche and you have a really defined set of services, you can price with confidence. You don't have to be really thinking, oh, wow, like are they going to pay this much money or You know, what if they don't want to or whatever? like Like anything, like specialists charge more.

12:53.21
Tanya williams
You think about it from a human perspective. um A specialist eye doctor charges more than your normal doctor because they specialize in a particular area. A specialist accountant charges more. A specialist lawyer, you know, these are all professional services.

13:08.05
Tanya williams
You are offering a professional service. So you can be charging a premium price for that. ah It's also easy to upsell. I think it it becomes um more naturally. So it doesn't feel like selling because the type of clients that you're attracting are usually more than happy to pay for all those little bits and and extra add-ons and so forth.

13:29.84
Tanya williams
And it allows you to create irresistible packages as well. So you can package up ah really fun sort of thing So one of the things we've just launched recently is a like a VIP all inclusive weekend stay.

13:41.98
Tanya williams
So it's not just overnight boarding, but it includes like um some, ah ah you know, home cooked gourmet meal. It includes poptails by the pool. You have a bit of fun with it, but, you know, they get a package just like you would go if you were getting a package to stay at a resort, okay?

13:57.55
Tanya williams
Get a bit creative with this stuff. So, ah you know, if you're going to run a small dog daycare, you could do a pampered pup upgrade and you could add, you know, spa washes and blow dries.

14:08.24
Tanya williams
Or you could do a VIP paulcation with photos and report cards and little gifts. And there's lots of things you can do. And the great thing about this sort of stuff is you can turn just, you know, like a one-night booking into a bigger booking with those little extras by packaging things up because your offer is really specific and it feels so um tailored and not salesy.

14:29.80
Tanya williams
And clients will think, oh, my God, they so get my dog and what they need. You know, that emotional connection is really priceless and it's also profitable because when you specialize, you reduce wastage.

14:41.69
Tanya williams
And you can buy the right equipment, have the right space, focus your marketing on one audience instead of five. That's efficiency. And that's where your profit margins really start to grow.

14:53.89
Tanya williams
So can you understand why this is so powerful? Like it really doesn't take much time. to to think about the importance of specialization and being very niche and clear about the services you provide.

15:07.78
Tanya williams
So really is about standing out from the pack because if you think about all the other dog centers in your area, everyone's doing the same thing, how does anyone stand out and really make their business a success?

15:20.41
Tanya williams
You don't. Okay. So you want to really have, um you know, a point of difference. And that point of difference makes people say, oh my God, I don't want to go anywhere else. Okay.

15:31.96
Tanya williams
and You know, that's something that I love hearing. I hear that all the time from clients that go, oh You know, well, you know, if you're booked, then we'll just change our dates because our dog isn't going anywhere. We just want them to come here because we know that they love the experience and we can just relax when they're here.

15:46.89
Tanya williams
We don't have to worry about a thing. You know, we have so many clients that will call us and check our availability before they book their own flights and accommodation. That says a lot. um You know, to say that their dog's not going anywhere and we will book our holiday around you means that they trust us.

16:03.91
Tanya williams
It means they have peace of mind. It means that they know what a good experience is they them and the dog has. And that means absolutely everything to me as ah as a dog sitting business owner and as a dog owner.

16:17.21
Tanya williams
Okay. you know um you know the um You know, we book out our dates well in advance so our clients know that and they can plan it accordingly. But, you know, like how good ah would a feeling like that be for you?

16:30.30
Tanya williams
You know, if, um you know, you could you could set up, you know, a boutique dog business type thing where it's your messaging is around, it's home-based, it's calm, it's cage-free You can have a dog specific focus. So we do staffies or we do senior dogs or we do anxious dogs.

16:44.74
Tanya williams
You'd have signature experiences where it's all about doing little play dates or doggy dinners or get creative with this guys. But be a specialist and whatever it is, own it.

16:55.84
Tanya williams
Put it everywhere. So for us, it's oodles and small dogs. You know, we talk about it being a paradise for oodles. You know, it goes everywhere. everywhere It's on our brain. It's in our conversations. It's in the client experiences. We talk about it in meet and greets. We talk about it in...

17:09.19
Tanya williams
anything that goes out, any sort of communication because it makes it very clear about who we serve, how we do it. And that's when people will start coming to you. Okay.

17:20.02
Tanya williams
So clarity breeds confidence and confidence breeds bookings. Okay. So that's a lot that I've covered. um So let's just do a quick recap. So the first thing is you need to pick your services that match your strengths and your lifestyle.

17:34.78
Tanya williams
Okay. Then that specialty is that you've decided you can actually then use that to stand out and attract those dream clients. Right. And then that becomes your point of difference. So you can shout it from the rooftop or at least from your Instagram captions. But, you know, you really have a clear point of difference um then.

17:53.84
Tanya williams
So if you're still figuring out your niche or or what to offer, it's okay. That's one of the things we help you with inside the Paws to Profit program and you'll learn how to identify your strengths and find your ideal clients and and create those signature services. So if you haven't joined yet, check out pawstaprofit.com.au and jump on the wait list.

18:12.70
Tanya williams
ah if you're listening to this before we launch. And as always, if you love this episode, then please leave a review um and share it with some other dog businesses that you know, um you know, and, you know, friends of yours that may be doing it and they're ready to level up because we love this.

18:28.56
Tanya williams
I love being able to share all this stuff with you guys. I want to hear about your successes. So please let me know um if this is making sense to you and if it's working for you, because if you're doing it right, it will work.

18:41.80
Tanya williams
Okay, until next time, stay poursome, keep those tails wagging, and remember your dream biz starts with clarity and a whole lot of doggy cuddles. That's me. Be amazing, stay fabulous, and ah I will see you on the next episode.
