SPEAKER_01Hello and welcome today to the Spiritually Aligned Therapist Podcast. And in today's episode, I speak to Ruby Chen, who is a certified mindset coach. Also, she works with ambitious women who are ready to break free from self-doubt, reprogram their limiting beliefs that have been holding them back, and step into a life of genuine confidence, success, and abundance. So welcome Ruby today. Thank you for having me. It's great to have you. So I just wondered if we could start today with if I could ask what the reason was or sort of the um the really motivation really behind why you got involved in this particular area of work. Okay.
SPEAKER_03That it's a long story, but we can dive into I would say from seven years ago I was moving from Taiwan to US and actually it's almost 10 years. It's a big culture shock for me. There's a language barrier and caused a lot of stress. And during that time, I did not notice I was having a really uh bad chronic pain on my sh right shoulder and then have hard time to breathe and getting migraine really often too, but people just keep telling me say that's just an allergy, that just you are adjusting the weather or the environment from Taiwan to Houston. So I've been just taking allergy pill, pain painkiller, and it only worked for like probably couple hours, and right next day it's happened again, and I have really hard time to sleep. I will wake up at midnight constantly, so I just really have a terrible rest. And I try most of everything, the massage and like stretch, all those different kinds of things I can find online. And that time I just come in here in USO. I don't have a like good insurance to go see a doctor that time. So I just basically try everything I can find, and it will only work only a short period of time and come back immediately. So I just thought maybe I just suffer this pain, it's just going to be my new normal now. Until I just really cannot handle it anymore. One day I was searching the pain and see an advertisement from uh Mind Valley, a meditation workshop. So I joined, go through that meditation process, and after that one-hour session, my pain actually reduced without any taking medication. So it's really mind-blowing to me. That's how I get into start a lot of spiritual and mindset work.
SPEAKER_01Well, that sounds like um something that totally blew your mind in terms of, you know, because we always think, don't we, about kind of the first thing is, you know, obviously medication. And so it does show the power of meditation and deep relaxation and sort of rewiring that kind of safety, really, the nervous system. And so I wonder, um, you talked to some of those challenges um and when you moved, and what were some did you find there are any other challenges that you faced at that time, and sort of what helped sort of you know propel you forward and you know, think about your own well-being and you know how you were gonna get through it, really?
SPEAKER_03Yes. And besides the culture shot and learning the whole different new environment, I actually find a lot of my uh emotional, suppressed emotional because I'm growing up from a traditional Asian family, and we don't usually talk about emotion, we don't say I love you when we go out to the door, and we don't usually say what we struggle. That's how we grow up. And so during that meditation, I actually a lot of memory comes up and a lot of like anger coming up too, because when I try to pursue my fashion design in college, my both my parents did not supported me and basically taught me down to say if you're not getting famous, you're just gonna be starved to death. And I'm just thinking, well, that's not very supportive. So a lot of time I just when I think about something, I decided I would not tell them because I know they're not gonna support me. So a lot of that emotion just like stuck inside me. And going through that personal development journey, I noticed how much like emotional I did not express myself. So it just like stuck with me for so long. And that caused me so much pain. And I didn't know this for a really long time.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and it sounds like that kind of, you know, often when clients and we hear this a lot, don't we, with clients around that suppression of emotion and pushing those experiences down, and and that can really show up as we know in the body. So it sounds like that was do you feel like that was what was happening um with you and that's what you were sort of experiencing?
SPEAKER_03Yes. So doing a lot of meditation generally is that does help a lot.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. What does it help you to do? Do you think? Does it give you that space to kind of reflect and you know, how does it help you to sort of process?
SPEAKER_03Yes. Uh it definitely helped me reflect and definitely have an outlet to let go of all those like emotional feeling not supported, and it just can to finally like notice your body's giving you a sign and how many years of the emotion you just like try to ignore.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yeah, yeah. I wondered um what were your fears around kind of um making the decision really to use your own lived experience and kind of did it have um an influence in starting your business? Can you say it one more time? Yeah, I I was thinking about what you were talking there to your fears and you know uh and the difficulties really that you that you were facing and some of those those challenges that you kind of um were showing to you in terms of you know the realization that this was kind of uh emotion that was suppressed and it was then showing up in your body as it was in terms of physical symptoms. I wondered how you you sort of use that to was that what what kind of propelled you really to start your business, really?
SPEAKER_03Uh yes, and so there's a lot of doubt because I never learned this before. All my parents is uh like regular workers, go in the company, and so I never really have a business owner around me. Oh sorry, sorry, sorry, overstart. So yes, and all my parents are both uh workers, so I don't have any business owner around me, so I can kind of learn from it. So I use in going through online, learn from different mentors to how to start a business, but it still have a lot of doubt in me because I never did that before. And I also know how do I know what part of me or until when I can support other people? So there's a lot of like back and forth. I know I've been through this, I know how to get out of this, but which part of me know I can be good enough to helping other people? So there's back and forth, and finally just like learning. I just need to learn how to help one person a day instead of helping tons of people.
SPEAKER_01Right, yes, and that so you shifted that expectation that you had. Did you have any expectations at the beginning that have now shifted, or you kind of look up at sort of your business in a different way?
SPEAKER_03Or yes, a lot. Because in the beginning, I thought, okay, I need to learn all the different techniques to help other people. I need to know what to say for the particular situation. So that means I'm helpful enough for my client. But till the end, I remember when we grow up, if the people give you opinion or suggestion when they did not ask for it, you usually don't want to listen, right? Yeah, yeah. That's that's the big aha moment to me. Like, if a client does not ask you particularly thing to help, I'm just going to pause that for focus on the thing they actually ask for helping. Because they're not in the situation to work on that part, that's just not going to help it out. And that helped a lot. And the second question, I already forget it, which you might remind me again.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, did that sort of that shift in mindset then about the way that you um viewed helping clients, that that kind of shifted really?
SPEAKER_03Yes, that shifts so much like heavy lifting on my shoulder the way I just need to know I'm being there for then and the part of they want to work on.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yeah. Because often we can think, aren't we, that we we might think that the client wants one thing, but in actual fact it's something else. You know, so often um people will come into a session, or when I used to do a lot more face-to-face work with um clients, therapy clients, and coaching clients, that you know, they come in with one issue, but so often it that's not the actual core um problem or the core issue. There's something that you know, there's many, many layers that you have to unpeel before you get to the core of the real issue, if you like. So that was what you were finding, was it, Ruby?
SPEAKER_03Yes, and being really patient about if they are not ready and they're just giving them the space to do their work.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yeah, yeah. There's something about, isn't there, kind of going at the client's pace and kind of you know, pacing yourself as well as a therapist, but knowing when the right time is to bring up issues or highlight things that that the client might not be seeing. Definitely. Yeah, yeah. So I wondered, you talked about your lived experience then, and I suppose how did you take that lived experience and kind of use it for like rocket fuel, you know, for your own kind of personal uh motivation, really, and your own personal personal power?
SPEAKER_03Uh I usually share my experience and knowing how much when we put our intention and desire in, it's possible. So when I share my experience online, people there's a two ex two experience I come to. It's uh, no, you're already that age is not that possible. Or second one is uh, oh I'm I wish I can do that too. But I'm not I'm just going to focus on people wish they can do that too. So guide them to do that. Just being an example for other people. No, if you put in your thought and work through it, you can get to the place you want to be.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yeah, yeah. Often people need that um reassurance, don't they? And and also they, you know, it's about kind of sometimes people, although they shouldn't need it, they need that kind of their self-permission to be able to go, oh actually, yes, I you know, I can do this, this, you know, and that's where the kind of limiting, like you said, the limiting beliefs come in about sort of unpacking, well, what's really going on for you here? You know, what's behind some of the resistance to change, really? Yes.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and in Asian culture, we don't like to talk about a struggle. Yeah, even though we've been through something in my generation, they're not going to seek any therapist. So I want to be the person's talking about it. So star around people are going to say, Yes, I'm I'm struggling too, so I need to start seeking the help.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah. And we we've seen that, haven't we, with the difference sometimes with well, we're definitely generationally, and in the past, we've seen you know the older generation perhaps really struggling to talk about mental health, and also there's that cultural element there as well. I want to tell you about my new program that is coming on board soon, and I'm going to be launching. And that program is about you as a business owner or a CEO, or perhaps you founded your own company, and you are really struggling with energy levels, you may be struggling to fit everything in, or you might be in a constant state of survival mode, and you don't quite know how to break free from that feeling of the constant go go go, no time to think, no time to do things, but you also feel as though somehow you're also being slowed down in life, and maybe this has you know really paid a toll on your health, on your relationships, and perhaps even in your business. So if you are not feeling great and there is feelings of overwhelm, or you feel like you're heading for burnouts, and you might be struggling with things like your sleep, or you're reaching for you know the caffeine or the sweet treats to just keep you going, you're probably in what you call survival mode, you're in that flight or fight stage of your business. So, my program as a therapist, coach, hypnotherapist, and yoga teacher is a combination approach in my program, and it's only four weeks, a call a week, and what we do is we identify ways to maintain your mental well-being as well as you know, some habit forming or perhaps breaking some habits that you've formed that are subconscious. So, we look at rewiring the subconscious mind for better habits, for better patterns, and to establish really your self-care as a priority in your business. So, when you focus on your well-being mentally and physically, your mind and your body when you're running a business, it's really important. In fact, it's an absolute necessity in order to help you feel balanced, balance your nervous system, be in a place where you can make the right decisions, have clarity around your clients, and clarity around your business strategy and where you're going with your future plans and business. The coaching element looks at setting goals and also in terms of your decision making, but also around how do I make sure that I continuously maintain my mental resilience and my energy levels. When you're operating your business and you want to go to the next level, it's really really important to think about how do I reserve my energy, restore my energy, and how do I operate from not just survival, but I'm operating from a balanced standpoint in my business so that I can grow my business and be a highest or the higher version or highest version of yourself in your business and reach your business goals. So if this sounds like you and you are interested in this, then either send me an email or you can contact me on the lukyl at podia.com. So when you join the program, you'll be able to network in terms of being in the group with other people that have been on previous um relaxed CEO programs, and so you will be able to build up a network of people that can support you, but equally that can give you perhaps collabs opportunities, and you might be able to feature on this podcast as well with your business and your ideas, so and it's an opportunity to for you to be able to tell your story and really raise your game. SPEAKER_01If you could tell me um about one woman in your life that influenced you to be the woman you are today or inspired you.
SPEAKER_03One woman. Right, yeah. I would say the most recently one could come out of my head is Kay Norrup. She oh, okay. Yeah. She helped me uh rethink about different um her programs about teaching people about money, right? Money abundance. So she helped me to learn a different aspect of money and nervous system work because when you have a business, in the beginning I have a hard time to ask for my service exchange for money. I feel like sometimes I should just come for free. And because some people really don't have the budget for for that moment, and then I just kind of felt like, yes, that's just. Do let's just do a free session. But I notice a lot of time people doing free session usually don't willing to pull the work or they're not ready to pull the work. And that also helped me just like her also mentioned about that too to give me a different idea about how you need to change your energy with some other transaction. It could be money, could be work, a different thing. So that also definitely helped me in the nervous system where this like also open a different like spiritual and mindset level of me, just unlock it. So I really like her work.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so there was something that you un really unlocked for you in that work. What was it the combination do you think of I mean you can talk to this more because obviously you you know you you've done the work on this, but what was it about that kind of mind-body bit that that really kind of made you see it differently, do you think?
SPEAKER_03Yes. Uh so during the she talked about a lot of the scientist part, sci like scientific part of how our mind works. And a lot of time before I'm doing the work, I usually focus on spiritual mind of work because I'm I guess my just very activated that already. So I don't really need a theory to convince me so much. But some of my clients require some uh scientific backup to know okay, this is part of the work. And so I combine those together, that's uh that helped them to understand that there is uh work for people already proven, so they are more trust to going through that spiritual mind work. That's definitely help. And nervous system is because when we start working on nervous system when we stress, you only can see like basically you're driving like 120 miles in the highway, you cannot see anything on the side, and then if you start to work on that, you can widen your what's a view so you can see the thing you actually need to work on better. So that helped me so much.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yeah, and I can see you can really see that, can't you? That kind of whole 360-degree viewpoint of you know your life. So it's not just the mind and the thinking part, but it's also the rewiring of the body as well, and all the and that really links into what you were saying earlier about kind of the symptoms you were getting, um, and the medical kind of bit wasn't it wasn't just about kind of like the biological body, but it's also about how the emotions affect the body and how trauma can kind of really stay in the body. So um that's really really important. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yes, yeah. Well, we're on the survival mole, you don't want to work on anything, you basically want to just f flight and fly. So the resistant part to help you come back to your body feeling safe, then you are able to do in the work. So that's a big difference for me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah, definitely. And it really helps people to sort of make sense of it as well. That you talked about that scientific bit, you know, there's so many different things that seem um out of reach or um very difficult to understand the concept, but I think um the way that that's explained is is really good for people because they can really get a grasp of what's actually happening and connect the two together is really important. Yes. Yeah, so so that's great. And how long did that take for you to do that?
SPEAKER_03Did you do the program for Kate's program or I did her program, I did her workshop before and then program relax money?
SPEAKER_01Yes, yeah, yeah, brilliant, brilliant. And did it have many shifts for you in terms of the way that you processed kind of your business and the way that you work with money and what did it do for you?
SPEAKER_03Uh so much didn't come up for during that whole year program. It's actually 13 weeks, but it takes me about a whole year because it comes uh just keep going back to working on some part. The big thing coming up for me is my father's story because uh father got laid off from his work and when I was very young. And so there's that that time he was the only one making money, like main breadmaker for the house. So they put a lot of stress on our family during that time. And he tied with his work and his identity so much with that company. So when he lost his job, he like emotional, like basically changed his personality, and put a lot of anger, stress to my mom and my whole family. So that's still time with me, even though it's been like almost 20 years. And and so that time we start to learn like different the money aspect of the theme, right? And when I do the relaxed money, I realize that part of me is still so rooted in me. There's uh I want the money, I also fear the money. Because I'm tied, yeah, yes. Give me the money to change the word. What if I lost it? What if the one day I lost it and would turn to my father? Like how it changed the relationship. So there's a lot of cutting cord, a lot of release, and knowing money is a tool, not a really like a lot of people like say money is root of evil. But money actually is the tool for us to exchange the service. So I need to just rewire that to help help me to realize money is not really the problem here. It's actually how we use money, as part of money, is the issue here.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yes, definitely, yeah. And again, it's that kind of shifting that mindset, isn't it? And and digging up almost all those beliefs around money. But I wondered as well, even with your clients, you know, how important it is that money bit, and but also how important it is to consider like culturally where people are coming from in terms of beliefs about money. So you've you've kind of got family systems, haven't you, around these stories that family tell us about money and the value of money and what it's supposed to be and not be. But also there's like maybe a cultural um belief there or expectation as well. So I wonder if you sort of um that's something you do, you know, with your clients that you work with.
SPEAKER_03Oh, they generally don't come with come to me about the money part, but it's also when we go deeper, there's a part of like they don't feel worthiness, and that's the part they notice we actually tie a lot of our worthy with money. Like they would think if they don't get paid, they don't feel like they paid get paid enough, they don't feel that's the part of their skills not worth it. That experience about about tiding with the money. So that's the part we will work on, but that that's not a generally coming coming in to find me about money.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yeah. So it's somewhere there, but it's not the the like we were saying, the first presenting issue, if you like, that they want help with, yeah. So I wondered if we think about that, and we think about self-compassion and your own sense of you know self-love as well. Do you have, I was wondering, Ruby, a morning routine or an evening routine to help you sort of restore, you know, yourself and and do you sort of what's your idea of sort of your own well-being and what that looks like and self-care?
SPEAKER_03Okay, I will try really hard and not pick up my phone first. Yeah, I think that's a big difference. If I don't pick up my phone first and read through all the notifications, that helped me so much. And I really like to have my curtains open, all the houses, all different rooms, so all the lights can come in and stop cooking my water to make my tea. If I can make generally I do black tea or herbal tea in the morning, and for having a couple sit, then I'll take my dog for a walk, and her go party, do her business, and then enjoy the sunshine, sun, a tree, a little bit of nature, and then coming back and doing a little short meditation. It could be sometimes just five minutes to ten minutes, and then start my work.
SPEAKER_01Amazing, amazing. So that sounds like you, and and do you find that a morning routine is more you? Like, do you find like that's more um fits with your kind of energetic kind of um body? And like, you know, because for some people they prefer the evenings, but some people prefer the mornings, or or perhaps they don't have a routine at all. You might have seen this, you know, with your clients.
SPEAKER_03So yeah, I definitely like the morning routine. I think it's set up like good intention for your day because sometimes it it's kind of like if your haircut, if you have a bad haircut, you kind of ruin your day, right? So if you stay on your day beginning right, then your rest of the day will be good. But I do like a nighttime routine too, before the bed.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's that's amazing. So I wondered if you could give your 18-year-old self some advice, what would that be? Do you think?
SPEAKER_0318 years old, not timed, let me think. Almost in college, I will say trust yourself more and doing the work knowing things going to work out for you, and start worrying about the judgment on other people.
SPEAKER_01Yes, it's so important, isn't it? I think when we're young we do worry a lot about what others think of us, perhaps. And yeah, it's kind of letting go of that, isn't it? And but you don't you don't really know that when you're in that moment of time, you know. So it's you know, looking back, isn't it, with reflection and saying, actually, I wish I had not worried so much about what what others think. So um if there's one thing you could do, Ruby, to change the world, big question. What would that be?
SPEAKER_03Change the world. I will really, really hoping we can start mental health in a very young age. Even if they start five or even elementary school, if start introducing, uh that would definitely help a lot. I know I don't have the psychology background, but I wish we just can talk about this more so people know this express is also one way to help it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so important, isn't it? To to kind of get that kind of education around mental health as well, but also sort of you know knowing how to articulate and express your emotions and that it's okay to, you know, okay to do that, but how do you do that as well? You know, it's giving children the sort of emotional language, isn't it, to be able to express it in different in different ways.
SPEAKER_03So yeah. And that will like basically shorten a many years of people's struggle because if they don't know how to start, they would just keep finding external things to try to fix it. And a lot of times actually is internal.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yeah, yeah, exactly, exactly. It just internalizes and yeah, and it's like you said, it's something that you know a lot of um people that I speak to, but a lot of the guests actually that come on um the show actually say that that really mental health has to start at a very young age, and that kind of um psych education really, isn't it? And kind of awareness around it and make it more normalized, really, you know, not something that is an extra thing, but something that's part of um education, really. Um a lot of schools well, some not a lot, but some schools have started to do things like mindfulness, haven't they, in school and things like that.
SPEAKER_03So yeah, better than nothing, start with small.
SPEAKER_01Start small, yes, exactly. It makes something small can be very big, can't it? Can actually have a massive impact. So that's great. So thank you, um Ruby, for coming on today for being here with me and chatting about your your work really and the work that you do with your clients. Um, and I wondered where could people kind of reach you if they wanted to work with you?
SPEAKER_03You can find me at with rubychin.com. They have my social, uh basically all different social media and YouTube channel on there.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay. Oh, you've got a YouTube channel, have you? Yes. Oh, amazing, amazing. And um, so people can just look you up and and they will find you there. Yes. Okay, brilliant. So um is there anything that you would like to leave view uh listeners with at the end of the show? Anything sort of words of inspiration or or anything that you would like to uh leave them with?
SPEAKER_03Inspirational. Um I would say just go connect with yourself more, listen to your body, and try to find any even just five minutes, go to the nature and notice how much quieter you're reduced so much noise in your mind.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, so true, so true. It's connecting back, isn't it, to to yourself, really. Um, there's so much distraction out there these days as well. So it's it's really good to remember and remind ourselves to regularly do that, really, so that we connect back. So thank you, and it's lovely to speak to you today, Ruby, and and thank you for coming on the show. Thank you so much for having me. I love your show.
SPEAKER_03Thanks, take care. Thank you.
