In this episode of Real Ones: The League, presented by Experian, you will see:
San Francisco 49ers All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner sits down with a true master of the wide receiver position, Cooper Kupp. Fresh off his second Super Bowl victory—this time with the Seattle Seahawks—the Triple Crown winner and Super Bowl MVP joins Fred for a deep dive into the "ultimate mental chess match" that defines the NFC West.
Cooper opens up about the "scars" of his NFL journey and the unwavering belief required to go from a third-round pick out of Eastern Washington to an NFL legend. He provides an exclusive look at the Sam Darnold Resurrection, detailing how Darnold overcame being written off by the league to lead Seattle to a championship by mastering the Shanahan system and finally "letting it rip". Kupp also breaks down the next generation of elite wideouts, explaining why Puka Nacua was a "refined caveman" during his first OTAs and how Jaxon Smith-Njigba is reinventing route-running by playing at one level with "no tell".
The conversation takes a personal turn as Fred Warner discusses his "gruesome" Week 6 ankle injury. For the first time, Fred reveals the internal team discussions regarding whether he would ever play football again and the relentless, optimistic mindset he used to push for a miraculous return in the NFC Championship game.
Finally, the two look ahead to the future of the rivalry, featuring a live FaceTime cameo from reigning MVP Matthew Stafford in the Experian Call Your BFF segment. They discuss Stafford’s "superpower" of mental recall and the return of the "ferocious" Dre Greenlaw to the 49ers, promising a 2026 season that will be "awful and annoying" for opposing offenses.

laying With Intention
SPEAKER_01By the end of the game, if I got someone playing my game, if they're like, you know, if they're laughing with me, if they're smiling, then I'm like, oh yeah, now now we're playing my game.
SPEAKER_00This is this is where I want to be. Man, the intention at which you do things every single day, every single moment, every single opportunity, that's where you truly find an edge. That's where you see yourself start to really pass people up because you're not just trying to check a box.
SPEAKER_01The only way you get back is to believe in yourself, right? And once you've done that, once you've committed, like, man, I've believed in myself when no one else did. Why go back to listen to what anyone else has to say about you?
uper Bowl Paths And Adversity
SPEAKER_00You know, the most elite quarterbacks in our league, the one trait that I think separates them from everybody else isn't that has nothing to do about throwing the football or athletic ability, is the ability to process faster and better than anybody else. Welcome back to Real Ones The League brought to you by Experian. I'm your host, Fred Warner. Today, folks, I'm sitting down with a guy who is a true master of his craft. When it comes to the wide receiver position, this man is the absolute gold standard. Yes, I know I said it. We're about to talk about uh a triple crown winner in a Super Bowl MVP. He is fresh off his second Super Bowl victory, playing with the Seattle Seahawks. Boo! Every time we line up against each other, I know I'm in for the ultimate mental chess match with this guy. I'm excited to welcome a fellow NFC West arch nemesis, O Cooper Cup, to the show, man. Yeah, thank you, Clear.
SPEAKER_01Appreciate it, man.
SPEAKER_00Appreciate it. We were we were just talking in uh in the room before this man about how it's long overdue, kind of being able to sit down and talk the game. I've had a ton of just respect for you over the years. We've had our battles, um, you know, playing each other twice a year, and uh it's been nothing but for a long time now. Yeah, long time. You what year are you going into this year? Are you a year ahead of me, two years?
SPEAKER_01I'm going into ten.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so I'm going into nine. So we we've had freaking nine years of battles, man, coming up on so uh you know, I can't wait to talk about that. But obviously, you're fresh off of your second Super Bowl championship, man. Obviously, I hate that for you, um, you know, as a as a 49er faithful, yeah, having to see the Seattle Seahawks win a Super Bowl. But, you know, as as like I said before, man, there's a lot of respect for you. And so I am happy for you, man, and all your success. How has it felt this time around winning this Super Bowl with Seattle versus winning your first one with the Rams?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you know, um the journey of what those seasons are, and you know, each team, like you're each year, it just it's a new journey, it's a new thing. Every single year, like you reset and you go after it. And uh obviously being in LA, uh, you know, I think that was in year five that we um won it back in 21, 22. And you know, we're you're at home, like I'm sleeping in my own bed. We're we're like, you know, it's it just it felt like just another game. And so there's a lot of things about like the Super Bowl week itself, but um, but the year, the whole collective of what the year was, all the the OTAs, going through training camp, all that stuff, it's just so different. Like it's hard to hold one to another. Um, it's just such a unique thing. And um, but it was it was such a it's so rewarding when it's when it's looking back on the adversity, all the hard things, all the tough things that you go through. It's what makes it worth it. You know what I mean? It makes it's the it's really hard because it's what makes things valuable. Like any anything that's meaningful in my life has been difficult. There's been valleys, there's been things you've had to go through. And um, you know, you you get a chance to play in the Super Bowl, it's it's it's it's not uh I no one's been perfect. No one's put together a perfect season. Won the won the Super Bowl at the end. I don't think I'm with the the Dolphins, I don't know if that even counts and what was all working with that one, but like, you know, even the even the uh Patriots back in the day weren't able to get it done there at the end. But um there's just there's valleys, there's there's there's adverse that you've got to play through. And uh it just seems like I've learned the the the higher, the more difficult the adversity is, the more meaningful it is when it pays off at the end.
SPEAKER_00Most definitely. And obviously you've you've been the uh you know the standard for like just showing what it what it looks like to overcome different challenges throughout your career, you know, different injuries. I remember uh you know, all the ankle injuries that you've dealt with to come back on top and and to win a tri uh triple crown, man, to be a Super Bowl MVP and be an all-pro and a pro bowl or in this league. Like, I mean, how how have you done it? Is a question that I've said, like how how have you had a career where you got people talking about where you wearing a gold jacket at the end of this thing when you were a third round, a third-round draft pick, right?
tacking Bricks And Staying Present
SPEAKER_01The third round drawing out of third round coming out of Eastern Washington. Eastern Washington, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, how have you done it, bro? Yeah, um, I think the the biggest thing is is one, I've got I've got an incredible group of people around me. Um, the support that I've had through all this stuff. I mean, going all the way back. If you go all the way back, like the coaches that I had as a kid, the like um coaches I had in college, the people I've had around me that have poured into me, uh I'm very lucky in that regard, very blessed. And then you know my wife, my boys, like just my family support system um has been unbelievable. And then on top of all that stuff, like there's all these, I have all this incredible base of support around me. Um, and then it's just showing up every single day and just being present. It's like, man, just stack bricks, stacking bricks, keeping your head down and working, and uh just trying to do the next right thing, trying to be uh innovative and not not getting complacent, not getting stagnant. Um, you know, there's just it's all the little things, it's all the cliches that everyone talks about, all this different stuff, right? It's like, but it's doing it. You know, it's not just saying it, it's it's just living it every single day. Like, how can I wake up in the morning? What can I do today to just get a little bit better? How can I be present, um, be where my feet are? When it's time to work, let's go work. When it's time to be home with my family, I'm gonna be home with my family, it's just and that that presence, the balance of all those different things. Um, you know, and I think uh I've had to learn all that stuff. It's taking time. Um, but doing the like doing the next right thing to allow yourself to move forward, to grow, to uh not allow yourself, not say that you've ever reached your potential. You know, I think like I think about I mean think about you, like you want to get coached. I know I know year by year Fred Warner is gonna go out and do something that's he's gonna get better. He's gonna be a better player the next year. You know, he's gonna learn something, he's gonna see something, uh, he's gonna attack some part of his game and he's gonna be a little bit better, you know. And so like that's the the best ones do it. They just continue to elevate, continue to find edges, and like sometimes it's going this way and then it's coming back the other way. You know, like you're always but you're always moving forward, whatever it is. And um, I think uh I think that's been that's been my edge. It's been my edge, um, along with having just an incredible group of people around me that have poured into me, lifted me up, and um allowed me to go after it.
SPEAKER_00I mean, it it sounds so simple, like just the the the concept of being present, but it's so powerful. Like the fact that if when you're able to truly focus on just maximizing every single moment, every single day, I know it sounds way too simple to people on the outside when they're hearing somebody like you say that, but it's like it's so true because when you can do that, I think the hard part is doing that consistently over a long period of time, you know, because it for most for a lot of people it's just so monotonous and almost a little bit boring. You know, you talk about you know, people see on Instagram like the flash, the flash and the big plays and the the highlights, but they don't see all the monotony of it all, they don't see the boring parts, you know what I'm saying? And that's where I think that's where the power comes from is being able to maximize every single present moment, not not relying on what you did in your past of winning a triple crown, not thinking about man, what am I gonna do going into this season? It's like nah, what am I doing right now today? Yeah, right, what am I accomplishing today? Yeah, what I'm trying to work towards.
SPEAKER_01It's these incremental games, right? And like I remember my uh I had a I had uh the baseball coach um back in in my high school, um Coach Pete. He I remember he walked in one day and he's like uh he's like guys, this is crazy. Like they've done it, they have, they finally have developed this pill. You can take in the morning, like you're like you'll get stronger, you're like your like your your um self-esteem will be higher, like your energy levels will be higher, like this the super pill, right? Of like it's gonna make everyone's life better, you know. And everyone's I'm like, oh, here it is. Like we finally have gotten to this point, right? And he's like, it's it's hard work, it's working hard, it's just being intense, it's like going after, you know, this is the this is the secret pill, you know. And it's like it's it's so true though, because like you you just do it, you wake up and you're like, take the pill every day, like get up and go do this thing, and then be be where you are, be intentional about what you're doing. I see it with like with my boys all the time, like with kids, just in general, when they're out there, like when you take a when you take someone and you say, Hey, we're gonna go hit baseballs, if they don't want to go out there, if a kid doesn't want to go out there and hit baseballs, but you're pulling them along and they're like you can tell the energy of how they do things, right? Like, it is like okay, they're getting swings on the ball or whatever it is. But when the kids are like, hey dad, can you go out? Like, can we go throw the football around? And they want to do it, and they're like present, they like they want to be there, they're intentional about their time. They're like kids are the best learners in the world, and when they're in that place, it's like, man, they are just like it's like wow, you're getting look at how much better you got in just this short amount of time because like you're loving being out here, you want to be out here, your mind's in it, your body's in it, and uh it's just the coolest thing. It's just such a great, it's like the clear example of and when you're dialed into it and you're mentally where your body is, and you're you know attacking it with an with a mindset of getting better, of doing something, not because like the the freaking workout sheet says I've got this many sets. It's like no, I'm doing this intentionally for a purpose. I'm seeing how this is gonna translate. It changes everything.
entoring Puka And JSN
SPEAKER_00Absolutely, bro. Intention is something that I as I as I continue to go through this thing, trying to figure it out every single year. I'm just like, man, the intention at which you do things every single day, every single moment, every single opportunity, that's where you truly find an edge. That's where you see yourself start to really pass people up because you're not just trying to check a box. Exactly. You know what I'm saying? So I I I see I've seen you do it over and over again, year in and year out, and that's why you continue to you know to be one of the top players in the in our league. So speaking of top players in our league, you you've been quite the mentor to a couple of cats that have now solidified themselves as the top of the game, Puka Nakua and Jackson Smith Najigba. Like talk about both of their games. You obviously train with Puka in the offseason, so you get more of a close, close-up look of how he works, how he trains, his mindset. But how is it kind of being around those guys? What what makes them great? What have you taught those guys to help them achieve greatness? Just speak on those two guys a little bit.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, well, first of all, both of those guys are great in their own. Like before I was ever around those guys, like they were they're incredible football players, um, you know, great wide receivers, and I've learned a ton just from watching those guys play. Um I remember watching Puka his first, like during OTAs, the first time he was like going through it. And there was like a there was a weird, like, you know, he was he was like a refined caveman, right? Like he like he had like the footwork, he had like the stuff going, but it's like dude, you're just like you, you like you're just like running through stuff. You know what I mean? Like you're just like like you know, and and uh and like so him, it was like man, like dialing into some of the more minute things, having an ability to kind of feel space a little bit and understand like you don't have to be flying in here all these things all the time, like um having a little bit more of a feel for like he's so strong, you don't have to, you you're always gonna be able to run through a shoulder, you know, and it's like choosing a shoulder, not running through the middle of a guy, um, being able to attack and attack an edge, but also knowing that he's got such a good great ability as I mean, he's a basketball player at heart, like yeah, allow yourself to move and allow yourself to like keep a DB off balance and not have to always play the physical game. Um but he did, I mean, he's he's done so much stuff that it was just like you know, you just try to give him little cues because he's such a good football player. It's like you just go go play. Um, and Jackson's similar, I I've Jackson's made he makes cuts, like he's kind of changed my thinking a little bit on times on the position in terms of how he does things at the top of his routes, because he plays at one level at all times. There's like I used to believe in playing low and sinking through, like dropping your hips and being able to get in and out of cuts. Um he's done this, he does this thing where he's just he doesn't change levels at ever. He's just he there's no tell. It's just his foot's in the ground and suddenly he's somewhere else. And I wouldn't, I don't know that I would like condone doing that for all for everyone else because there's a there's a feel, uh a balance that has to be you know done over years and years and years to be able to do what he's doing. Um but it's pretty special. So you know, Jack's a lot of it is the similar to Puka, is like, hey, here's like a tip, here's something I'm seeing from like a it might be even like timing. Like, hey, Sam's Sam's doing this. This is Sam's footwork. So he's gonna need you to be ready at this point. So maybe like that first part of the route that you ran, let's just speed that up a little bit, like without having to take any creativity out of like just speed it up a little bit just so you're there, because what you the way that you're running this route is unbelievable. I would never would have thought of that. But let's just speed it up, let's just get the timing right so it's matched up with what's happening in the backfield, so you're in the right spot at the right time when Sam's needs you to be there, you know. And so um little things just to help with you know the overall global part of the game. Um, but those guys are such good wide receivers, um, and they're gonna be you know playing this game at a high level for a long time.
am Darnold Finds Himself Again
SPEAKER_00Nah, I agree. I hate going against some dudes, but hey, you gotta figure you gotta try and find a way to stop them every single time, every, you know, when we line up on Sundays. Get started by downloading the Experian app today. You talked about Sam though. And you know, I want you to kind of talk about playing with Sam because I obviously played a year with him here with the 49ers and you know, great dude. He fit in perfect with our with our team, great attitude, has always been uber talented. But I think this past season, his ability to kind of just you know put all whatever anybody's talking about him to the side on the outside of the building and really just hone in on what he's doing on the field and you know, having the belief in his teammates, his teammates believing in him, and to you know, really reach the mountaintop. Like, did you see a change in? I mean, I guess you weren't with him before, but did how how was that kind of going through the year with him?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you know, I talked to him a little bit about what his journey was like because this like no one's done what he's done, like straight up, it just doesn't it doesn't happen. Like for like guys, a lot of the time those guys get written off, they get pushed aside and say, like, you can't do you can't be the guy, you know what I mean? And um, like you said, Sam's extremely talented. I'm sure you practice against him probably every single day. And so I saw like he can make every throw, you know, uh he can move and he can throw off of any base, and so um all that stuff's there. Um he talked a lot about early on feeling like he needed to be someone that the league told him he needed to be. You know, the league could get in, and like you're a young guy and you're the quarterback, and like, oh, you need to take control over everything, and like this is how you're supposed to be. And it's like, no, like you need to be Sam Darnold. You know, you need to be Sam, like you need to speak like the way that Sam Darnold would want you would would speak. And like there's gonna be some stretching of like you know, some uncomfortable things. Like you're not natural getting up in front of a room and things like that. There's gonna be a little bit that you're gonna have to get out and get used to, but always being yourself, and so he talked about that a little bit. Um, but then also getting back when you got to the Shanahan system, it's like, man, the the difference for quarterbacks when you're in a system that maybe just whatever it is. I've only been in two systems, right? So, like there's some systems out there that have like there's systems out there that work for Peyton Manning. It it might not work for everyone, you know, you might not gel, whatever it's it might just not fit, it might not grow and change as defenses have changed. It's like, man, are you innovating to match the stuff that's happen that's happening defensively? Because you know, early when Peyton was with the Colts, like defenses were very different then than they are now. And you can't just run Peyton's old offense. You know, you have y'all gross, y'all change. And so I don't know. I don't know, maybe that was happening, maybe it wasn't, but whatever was happening earlier, just not gelling with what was happening offensively to getting with Kyle and seeing, man, there's answers, there's like there's things here that that make sense schematically. Like the game is now making sense to him, the pressure of like having to do everything is off. It's like, man, play within the game, play within the like your footwork, allow your steps to guide you through your reads. Um it was really cool seeing it. It's like, man, that all those all those things that happened before, all the scarring, all the things that like for quarterbacks have ruined careers because they just can't get past the mistakes that they've made and how like man, I can't let that dagger throw go because I've got I've that thing's gotten picked so many times, I just can't do it. But it's like, no, no, you you're making that throw, like let it rip. And you know, for Sam to be able to grow past that stuff and continue to let it rip and let it go and trust it. Um, and that's what's made him so special. And and he's such a great, like, you know, his mind in terms of his preparation, how he goes about his day by day. Like, man, this is these are things I'm seeing, these are things that I like that we're doing, these are the problems that I'm seeing, man. Like asking questions with the protections and challenging the coaches to see things for himself because at the end of the day, the quarterback's gonna be the one that's standing there with the ball in the pocket, right? And it's like, man, I want to have answers, I want to have opportunity for us to move the ball, and I want to be able to get the ball out of my hand and get to our playmakers. And um, it was just really special to see him like all the things that he talked about. It's like, man, I can I can hear I wasn't there with you before, but I can hear, I hear you, and I can see how it was before to like seeing the confidence and stepping to like, man, it's just consistent Sam Darnold being Sam over and over and over again, completely whatever, ignorantly unaware of whatever anyone else is saying, because he was he was at the very he was at the bottom of it, right? He was at the place where everyone had written him off. And it's like the like the only way you get back is to believe in yourself, right? And once you've done that, once you've committed, like, man, I've believed in myself when no one else did, and I'm got I'm back on this at this point. Why go back to listen to what anyone else has to say about you, you know? Um, and so I mean I'm so proud of him, and it's been really fun, fun playing alongside him.
amily, Longevity, And A Coffee Shop
SPEAKER_00Nah, dude, he's a great guy, man. Obviously, he deserves it more than anybody. And you, I think you hit it, like nobody's done that. Nobody's done what he's had to go through where you have to bounce around three or four different teams. You're on your what I think it was his fifth, he's on his fifth team now, fourth or fifth team, and now and then you go and you win a Super Bowl, bro. Is you got you haven't you got to tip your cap. Yeah, even though it's Seattle, it's yeah, it's this, that, and the third, like, bro, you got you got to show respect where it's due. And you know, he he bleed nine or red and gold at the end of the day. So like it's it's all it's still it's still good, bro. It's still love with him. Um, but yeah, so talk about uh I don't know how long you want, but how long you want to play this game, bro? I mean you're you're going into your 10 now. You know, people talk about they would 10 years is is usually good enough. I don't know if that's your mindset or if you want to play 20 like old Tom Brady. Like, how long you want to play?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you know, it's funny, it's kind of like the you kind of like going with the plan, right? Like you have an idea of going into this like NFL what you want to do. And um, I had always said I just want to play until the wheels fall off. We'll play until like I I can't play anymore. Um, then we had kids and like family starts growing, and I'm like, ah, maybe like nine, ten years will feel good. Like our boys will be this old and this will make sense. And then you know, like two or three years ago, uh our boys just like fell in love with the game. And it was it was really cool as they got older, like how excited they were to be a part of it and be around it, and be around the guys. And it's like such a cool experience, and it's so amazing being able to like the memories that they're building, um, you know, being able to have them on the field. And uh it's just been it's just been really fun. And we're as a family, we're just really enjoying it. And so um, we're we've got no plans on stopping. I'm I'm feeling good. I'm playing good football and and enjoying going out there to work each day. And so um we've got no, we're at the point where we're playing, we're playing ball, and as long as everyone's having fun, we're just gonna keep it rolling. How many boys you got? We got three. Three boys how old? Seven, five, and two. We're we're we're in it, man. We're we're rolling. The guys. Oh, it's so much fun. We got we got like so much energy in this household. It's uh it's really fun.
SPEAKER_00So I why the reason why I asked is because obviously I know you got some some things that you that you're uh involved in off the field, your your coffee company that you started. Uh, how did that come about? Are you you always been a big coffee guy? You you wanted to start your own coffee brand?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we've been into coffee for a long time. Um, and we kind of had the opportunity with some family that were interested in running the shop. And so um we're like, shoot, if there's an opportunity to basically make ourselves exactly what we would want in a coffee shop, like that'd be really fun to do, right? So it's like, how can we find how can we go find like the best possible beans? How can we find the best farms, people doing it the best they possibly can? How can we like provide people the best possible product? And like, so if you go to our coffee shop, we want to like Like we're gonna get the best milk. Like we're gonna get the milk from a farm. We don't we wanna bring that we wanna serve you that stuff. We want to like make the syrups. We want to give you like the best. We're not gonna give you like the cheap coffee beans, the cheap coffee roast. Like we're gonna give you our best roast that we can. So like every cup, everything's just quality. I just want it to be like a quality thing, an experience that we would want, you know. So that's how that's how this whole thing kind of started. And uh it's been so much fun to build out. We've we've really enjoyed it, and um, yeah, it's been it's been going well. Where's the where's the shop at? So the brick and mortar is in northwest Arkansas. So that's where um my wife's family lives down there, and they kind of run the day-to-day stuff of it. And uh yeah, our flagship, our flagship shop will be done here hopefully in the next like two months. Hopefully. Okay, so we got I might need to try some of them beans, bro.
SPEAKER_00You know, I'm gonna go to the house.
SPEAKER_01Look, I'll I'll send you I'm gonna send you some. We are we're we roast all everything ourselves, and so we've got uh a warehouse that um great dude that runs everything behind the scenes for us. Um does all the roasting, and um, yeah, we'll we'll I'll ship you some stuff.
SPEAKER_00That's what's up, bro.
SPEAKER_01Some good stuff.
all Your BFF With Stafford
SPEAKER_00Appreciate that, man. Do you know who we haven't heard from in a while? My BFF, Puka Nakua. I got the chance to catch up with Puka and challenge him to the Experian Call Your BFF segment. Let's see who he called. All right, so we got the Experian Call Your BFF segment, and then we want you to go ahead and call whoever you feel your BFF is around the league. I'm calling Derwin. Derwin James. Okay. Oh, please.
SPEAKER_02Friend of the pod. I'm like friend of the show. Let somebody please just be my BFF. Derwin James! Hey, my dog, my dog, yes, Turkey. Wait, tell me, tell me, hey, tell me you're my BFF. Hey, I just want to let you know, bruh. I appreciate you tomorrow, bro. Every time I see you, bruh. You my BFF for real, bruh. You my BFF for real, bruh. SPEAKER_01Hey, what's up, brother?
SPEAKER_02Hey, but hey, I still gotta call you from uh I still gotta call you out later, bruh. Alright, peace. Man, old Darwin James. That dude is the happiest.
SPEAKER_00Uh so this next little segment we do is called the Experian Call Your BFF segment, where I uh we always ask our guests to whip their phone out and FaceTime whoever your BFF is in the league currently uh to see if they pick up and just let them know, hey man, you just wanted to let you know you're my BFF. So if we if we had to do that, who who would you pick uh to to see if they would uh answer a FaceTime right now?
SPEAKER_01Uh I'll I'll I'll call Matthew. How's that sound? Oh, that's right. So keep it keep it in the indivision? Absolutely.
SPEAKER_00I think that'd be a great FaceTime. FaceTime, yeah. You know, I know he got his three girls, he's a busy man. He's a busy man.
SPEAKER_01This is risky stuff going on.
SPEAKER_00Oh, Matthew Stafford here, folks. Let's see. Reigning MVP. You know, he's uh his ego's through the roof now. Oh he exactly humility's out the window.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. Who knows if he even remembers my name? Here we go. We'll see how this goes. All right, here we go. I'm not I'm not super optimistic, especially if he's out if he's out golfing, he's not he's not gonna pick up his phone, but uh he's a busy man. We we it was established. This guy. How are you doing? When you're all right. Oh, you do I can't even uh dude. It's good for you. Trying to play my 90th year, man. Yeah, good for well, I mean your your 89th went pretty well, so yeah. How are we doing? Tell me. Um, Fred wanted to say hi to you, so I was gonna you want to say hi to Fred? Yeah, yeah. Matthew, what's up, man?
SPEAKER_00Hey, hey, congratulations, brother. Thanks, man.
unknownAppreciate it.
SPEAKER_00Hey, don't don't be don't be afraid to lay it down, man. You've done enough. You've done enough, bro.
SPEAKER_01He's all good. Uh I'm sure he's doing well. He's wearing a schmedium shirt. He's feeling himself. He's feeding. I'm trying to intimidate Cooper. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Are you doing his podcast?
unknownDoes he have a podcast?
SPEAKER_01Are you doing his podcast? I'm doing his podcast right now.
SPEAKER_00Yep. Yeah. Nice. Yeah. We'll have you on soon, buddy. Don't worry. There you go.
SPEAKER_01Oh, you guys have the Aussie trip. That's nice.
SPEAKER_00That's right. Yeah. That's exactly right. Aussie might.
SPEAKER_01Alright, brother.
SPEAKER_00All right, pal.
SPEAKER_01Where are you? Are you in Seattle? Are you in? Yeah, I'm in I'm in I'm in Seattle. Or no, I'm in LA right now. Sorry. Oh, okay. Yeah. Alright, well, do your do your podcast still friends and something that'll be up later. Alright, sounds good. Alright, buddy.
SPEAKER_00So you guys, you guys are pretty close. You you you got a good little relationship.
hy Elite QBs Process Faster
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he's gonna hate that. I did that to him. But it's all good. It's all good. Hey, bro, it's all good, man. It's all it's all love, you know. Nothing, nothing spiteful. No, no, he's yeah, he's great. He's uh he's awesome, man. What a year he had. That was that was it was um it was incredible. The year you leave, and then he just wants to go be an MVP.
unknownI know.
SPEAKER_01That was that was wild. I mean, you know, what's awesome though is you know, everyone can say now, it's like, you know, he I don't think he was able to do OTAs. I think some he had you know he was dealing with some training camp. And so it's like, hey, we have every argument. Look, like why why do OTAs in training camps?
SPEAKER_00Literally, literally, I know. I was thinking the same exact thing when he won that MVP and he was balling. I'm like, damn, this man ain't do no offseason programming. He just but I think quarterback's completely different than any other people.
SPEAKER_01I think quarterback yeah, to be going in.
SPEAKER_00You can you can kind of get away with it.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. To be able, like you said, he's going into year 90, he's got so many bit, you know, built-up reps and experiences, and his like his superpower, like okay, as good as he is throwing everyone knows throwing the ball, like all the different stuff that he does, throwing the ball, it's out of this world. But his ability to process things, remember them, and then like recall them is yes is second to like you've seen everyone's seen Sean do his recall thing, but Matthews recall in the moment, seeing it like even better. Like, oh, like he's you'll have to take the snap on the snap, he's like, Oh, I've seen this, I know exactly what's you know, I mean, and being able to see know the whole thing, yep, and now where to go with the ball at that point. Like, it's just it's crazy.
avorite DB Matchups And Mind Games
SPEAKER_00So I've always said, bro, the the the most elite quarterbacks in our league, the one trait that I think separates them from everybody else isn't is that has nothing to do about throwing the football or athletic ability, is the ability to process faster and better than anybody else. And I think that's what makes our quarterback great. Brock Purdy, I see him the way that he operates and the way that he plays the game, bro. His processing ability, like you just mentioned with Matthew, is is just right up there. J just being able to slow the game down from upstairs, it's it's insane to watch. So um just quick around the league, man. What if uh what are you some of your favorite DBs to watch? Uh or no, excuse me, not to watch, but to match up against uh year in and year out. I know obviously you got some guys that you done that you done competed with through the years.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and there's a lot of guys that are like there's just really good, really good, real competitive dudes. And you know, I've had um a lot of the stuff even in the league in the division where you're seeing guys over and over and like I love competing against Buda, and uh you know they had Jalen Thompson, I think I don't think he's there anymore, but like um Yeah, they're tandem. Yeah, those guys, like how they compete. Like you just knew it was like going into that week, like this is an energy match, like we need to match the energy because they're gonna be flying all over the place. And um, that was so much fun. It's so much fun playing with the guys that I I love playing with guys that love to compete, love to like compete, play in and play out. And I'm not a big trash talker. I know you go into your alter ego and get all your trash talking. Um I hate playing against like in before the game and after the game, Fred's awesome. After during the game, Fred's the worst. Um I love competing. I love competing with guys, you know, and like like guys will like sometimes guys want to talk crap and they want to like you know, whatever, but like that's not my game. And so I like to get guys to play my game. You know, my game is like, hey, good job. Like way to like that was a good play, you know, way to compete. Trying to soften them up a little bit. Yeah, by the by the end of the game, but we're competing, you know, we're competing. It's like, hey, that was a good player, wherever. By the end of the by the end of the game, if I got someone playing my game, if they're like, you know, if they're laughing with me, if they're smiling, then I'm like, oh yeah, no, now we're playing my game. This is this is where I want to be. You know, and so that's uh that's uh we've got but there's a lot of good guys in this league, a lot of really good football players that that love to compete. And so there's I mean it's hard to even say like I love those guys um in Arizona. Um I used to go, you know, Kwan in uh with the Niners. I used to compete against Kwan Williams all the time. Um yeah, K1. Uh Shaverius Ward was a really good player when he was with uh San Francisco. Um I think uh I mean the guys like Spoon, now that I'm I'm competing against Spoon every day now up in Seattle, he's he's awful. Job had an unbelievable year. Um the safeties up there, like when we had Kobe uh Bryant and uh Julian Love are really good football players. Um and then even Slash, I got to go against I used to go against Quinn Lake all the time, but being able to compete against him now in-game, really solid football player playing safety and nickel and kind of moving around like that. Um yeah, there's there's some there's some really good guys, and like you know, Cam Curl's another one that's really good. And some of those uh guys that were there in LA with that were rookies when I came in, you know, Cam Kinshin, Cam Kinson's and um, you know, uh Kobe Durant. There's just there's there's some really good, really good football players. And just I'm just talking about guys in the in our division. That's just been fun competing with guys you see, guys you see twice a year for multiple years, and um, you know, it's it's fun.
SPEAKER_00I think that's those are the guys that obviously leave the biggest impression when you're playing a guy year in and year out, twice a year. It's uh it's just so funny being in those team meeting rooms the the week of playing that team, like on that Wednesday, and you're going through the what it takes tape and you're seeing the same exact the same exact thing over and over again. Like Kyle Shanahan, he's gonna have the same exact thing to say about Boover Cup. He's gonna have the same exact thing to say about Bouder Baker every single year and how he is in the run game and the pass game. It's just so funny to like you know to watch and listen to.
SPEAKER_01You know, I used I keep uh I keep a notebook on each, so I each I have a notebook for each team we play, right? So like I've got a San Francisco notebook, so every time we play San Francisco, like I take my notes in the San Francisco notebook to you know, keep notes on guys and whatnot. And yeah, this is funny seeing like you see turnover, there's obviously turnover, but there's also the guys that like the names that stick. You know, it's like my notes on guys have slowly gotten less and less because I'm like, no, I don't need to put any more notes on Fred. Like I know Fred. You don't need to you don't need to put anything more down. Like I get it. I know, I know what it's like. Um yeah, it's funny seeing uh seeing that stuff. It is because it is, it's like this is it's a lot that but it is, it's a lot of the same stuff in terms of that energy that like man, guys that are consistent, guys that's like man, these they play with a certain there's a certain way that they play the game, and it's gonna you're gonna see it every single snap. Like the energy is gonna be there. They're gonna compete, play in and play out. Um those are the guys that very rarely are moving teams. They're like that, you see that name stick around because like, man, the energy, they're bringing the energy over and over and over again. Um, but yeah, it's it's uh it's been fun, it's been really fun to compete.
ehab Mindset And Dre’s Return
SPEAKER_00It is fun, bro. And we're gonna continue to have lots of fun moving forward. Uh so last thing, bro, before we let you go, man. I like to let our guests kind of flip the script, and you you get to ask me at so a couple questions as the host of the show. Oh, yeah. One personal, one football question, and then we're out.
SPEAKER_01Okay, well, one I think I've I think Matthew kind of touched on like how are you feeling? I know like that was brutal in terms of like that that injury and coming back, and like you sound seems like you were on the edge. You guys were putting some propaganda out there when we were about to play you guys. Putting out the propaganda, like Fred's yeah, Fred's ankles bolted back on, and he's coming out here to play. How how was that process coming back from that thing?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, man, it's uh I've I've talked about it a ton. I was actually shocked at how quickly I felt like I was recovering uh early during the early process of it, you know, because of how gruesome an injury it was, you know, the the early discussions were not how quick can I get back, it was discussions about can I ever play football ever again? You know what I'm saying? And then as the rehab started going, uh, you know, it just started to move so so quickly that they're like, hey bro, if you're if your mind's into it and your heart's into it, like let's see how quick we can get you back to possibly play in that NFC championship game. And so uh, you know, the the plan actually when we were leading into that game against you guys in the divisional, they weren't they weren't even planning on opening my practice window until the following game, if we won that game. Yeah. Um, but I said, Well, I don't want my first time being on that field to be, you know, in the week of when I'm supposed to play. Like, at least let me get my feet wet, uh, you know, getting back on the field the week prior, you know, just to just to see how we feel. And so I was out there, and of course, every single media member's over there with their camera, watching my every single, every single step and move from the time I walked out there to the wet to the time I walked off. And I felt good, you know, everybody said I looked good. And uh, you know, there was it was not it wasn't really like a matter of am I gonna play in that game? Like the the the plan all along was if we win this game, we're gonna play in the NFC Championship game. So um the fact that I even was able to practice though in January after doing that was just incredible. So that's huge. Um yeah, and so it just it boosted my confidence going into this offseason of just I don't have to worry about just rehabbing an ankle all off season. It's like, no, I get to just jump right back into my training and then uh and then be better than I was before I got hurt, you know what I'm saying?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so in follow-up to this, this isn't my second question, this is just follow-up to the first question. Is like during your rehab process, is there something that like mindset-wise, did you have a like what was that like going in from because like rehab is like we talked about being intentional, right? So like sure, like the intentional thought of like, hey, I'm going into rehab, rehab's really hard. Like you're you're set apart from the team, you don't feel like you're a part of things, you're like you're there trying to get like your body right, you know, like little like today. I want to walk, you know what I mean? Like you know what I mean. So like what was your mindset like as you like go through those steps? Like, what was it like for you? What what helped you mentally kind of go through that rehab process?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, there was definitely phases. Uh, you know, what the funny part is because this was like my first major injury in my entire eight-year career. And so I remember during my eight seasons when guys would get hurt and then they'd be away from the team, and I'm like, damn, like why are they, you know, why are they not in the meetings or why are they why does it feel like they just kind of left us? And and then I and then I'm in that position. I'm like, damn, like that's now I'm I'm that guy. But it's not because I'm intentionally wanting to be away from the team, it's just that I have to dedicate every single second of my day to getting myself back right, you know, so I I don't have time to just sit in there in the meeting anymore just to jot notes down about the game plan because I'm not the one that's gonna go out there and play like no, I need those, I need every single second to be in that training room, out on that field, doing something you know productive toward getting my ankle right. So, you know, there were phases throughout early on where I'm on a scooter and I can't do things for myself, and it was so frustrating, and I'm just pissed off. But like through it all, I I tried to stay as optimistic as I could, and and you know, my whole mindset was that you know this is just an opportunity for me to now show what somebody can achieve post-coming off of an injury like this, you know what I'm saying? And like it's just my mindset's always been different when it came to just playing this game, and so I'm like, why not just carry that over into my rehab process and and just maximizing every single day? And when I when I did that and I continued to ask the questions and stay curious about things that could help me kind of just allow myself to heal more efficiently and better than you know, maybe somebody else who's gone through this process, then I that's when I kind of saw myself continue to just flourish through it and recover at a at a faster clip than I think everybody thought possible.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And that's I mean that's like a great uh I remember going through all the rehabs, like it's a great exercise and like that shift from like how you do you can take that intention that you play football with, like you can take that in anything, right? Like it's it looks different maybe, but like it's the same, it's it's the same like focus, right? That goes into the into those things. And so um that's pretty cool. And it's testament to like the fact that you were the fact that you were knocking on the door to get back. Um I thought for sure when they open your practice window back, I'm like freaking Fred's coming back. I know he's coming back, he's gotta be coming back this week. Um, okay, football question. Um what's it like you got your boy back?
SPEAKER_00That's right. Right?
SPEAKER_01You got your boy back. Yep. Um tell me what that's gonna what that's like, and like how awful are you guys gonna be to the opposing team? Yeah, like how bad are you? How bad is Alter Eagle Fred and Dre gonna be?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no, it's bad, bro. It's bad for you, bad for old Matthew, man, bad for everybody going forward. Because you you just know when it's different when you got such a uh a rapport and like a a connection with somebody, man, where every single time I played with Dre for like the seven years we played together, is it there's an unspoken language on the field where I don't have to turn to him and be like, hey Dre, look for this, or hey, hey Dre, bum, bum, bum. Like it's just like it was unspoken. Like we're moving together in unison, like, and it was just so easy because we we just had this great vibe with one another, um, you know, on and off the field. And so it it just it may it allows you to play even more free um when you got a cat like that. And I I play with great linebackers, right? I played with D winners uh last year, uh Kwan Alexander and uh you know a ton of other ones, but you know, Dre, he just he's one of the best athletes I've been I've ever played with on a field, and just so so ferocious and relentless in the way that he plays the game. And you just love playing with guys like that who just are willing to give it up, right? Like, and just no matter what the situation is, he'll look you dead in your eye and it's like, God damn, this this guy is not playing around. Like he is looking to tear somebody's head off. Yeah, so yeah, man, it's it's gonna be good to have him back. I can't lie, I can't lie.
SPEAKER_01I'm looking forward to seeing you guys be awful and terrible and watching us on film like, gosh, these guys are so annoying. Yeah, no kidding.
SPEAKER_00No kidding. So it'd be fun, man. But hey, Coop, it was a pleasure, man, having you on. It's much respect, bro. Continue to do your thing, man. And of course, when it's all said and done, when we're all watching you put that gold jacket on, it'll be a pleasure to watch. So uh hey, yeah, of course, bro. Appreciate it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's been fun.
