What if money was never the real goal?

In this episode, I reflect on a personal turning point — from chasing money as a measure of success, to discovering a different kind of fulfillment.

Through recent experiences, I share how my relationship with money has been shifting — from pressure to peace, from “never enough” to “just enough.”

I thought money would make me feel enough… but peace was what I was actually looking for. Maybe real success is not about how much we have, but how we live with what we have.

How I Met Jesus — Episode 26

Learning to See Money Differently

Hi, this is Elena.

Welcome back to How I Met Jesus.

Over the past few episodes, I’ve been talking about money.

The fear. The anxiety. The beliefs I didn’t even realize I was carrying.

Where those beliefs came from. From my childhood. From my family. From what I saw, and what I learned without questioning.

And slowly, something has been shifting in me. Not all at once. Not completely. But gently.

Because for a long time, money never felt neutral to me. It felt heavy. It felt like something I had to get right. Something I had to control. Something I couldn’t afford to lose.

And without realizing it, I was asking money to give me something it was never meant to give. Peace. Security. A sense of being okay. But the more I tried to hold onto those things through money, the more fragile everything felt. Because money can change. Circumstances can change. Life can change.

And slowly, I’m starting to see that money itself… was never the problem. It was the meaning I attached to it. For a long time, money meant safety. If I had enough, I could finally relax. If I didn’t, everything felt uncertain. But now I’m beginning to see something different. Money is not my security. Money is a tool. A resource.  It can support my life. It can create opportunities. It can expand what’s possible.

But it was never meant to carry the weight of my identity. It was never meant to define my worth. And it was never meant to hold my peace.

In Matthew 6:21, it says: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

And that verse made me pause. Because I realized, for a long time, my heart had been placed in something that could not hold it. And maybe that’s why it felt so unstable. But now, I’m beginning to learn something different.

Not to reject money.

Not to fear it.

But to see it clearly.

Money is not something I need to chase to become enough.

It’s something I can steward from a place of already being enough.

And that shift… changes everything. Because when money is no longer my source of identity, I don’t have to prove myself through it. When money is no longer my source of safety, I don’t have to control everything. And when money is no longer my source of peace, I don’t have to be afraid of losing it.

Instead… I can hold it lightly. Use it wisely. And trust that my life is not defined by it.

I’m not trying to build my life on money anymore.

I’m learning to build my life with it — but not on it.

And maybe that’s what freedom really looks like.

Not having unlimited money. But no longer being controlled by it.

And I’m still learning this. There are still moments of fear. Moments of uncertainty. Moments where old patterns come back. But now… I see them.  And instead of letting them define me, I can return to something deeper. To trust. Not in what I can control. But in the One who has been providing for me all along.

Philippians 4:19 says:

“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

And maybe that’s what I’m learning to believe. Not perfectly, but slowly.

Prayer

Let’s pray.

Dear Lord,

Thank You for walking with us through every season of our lives. Through moments of lack, and moments of abundance.

Thank You for showing us that our worth is not defined by what we have.

And that our security does not come from what we can control.

Help us see money clearly. Not as something to fear, and not as something to depend on completely. But as something we can steward with wisdom, with freedom, and with trust in You.

Teach us to rest in Your provision.

And to build our lives on something that does not change.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

For a long time, I thought money would make me feel safe. But now I’m learning something different. My safety was never meant to come from what I have. It comes from who I trust.
