A reflection that invites you to go for a short walk. Inspired by Osho's quote, "Courage is a love affair with the unknown."
This reflection involves a few minutes of walking, so only hit play if that's something you can do right now. There's a teacher named Ocho that pops up on my TikTok feed. One of them said, Courage is a love affair with the unknown. I hit pause and I sat with that one for a bit. Deep breath in. In and out. One more. Deep breath in. In and out. Courage is a love affair with the unknown. I'm stepping out of my relationship with absolute safety. We've had a good run. We like to drink coffee together, commiserate, worry. We find ways to stay small, protected, and unexposed. But that's no way to live, not really. Deep breath in. In and out. Intellectually it makes sense that courage is a love affair with the unknown, but how do I make it make sense in my head, heart, and body? How can I dabble and fall in love with the unknown? How can I sneak away into it? I think I have to move. I have to start with a small action, like right now, not later, when I have a little bit more time. So right now, wherever I am, I stand up. And I fight the urge to stay plugged in to whatever productive task I need to do or think I need to do in this moment. And I stand. For the next few moments, I'm going to start walking and trust that I'll discover something important and useful. I feel an urge to head outside and walk in the direction of something that catches my eye. Maybe it's a tree or a building, or who knows, but I'm going to move toward it with a little bit of music to help you. Nothing major, just another place a little bit aways from where I am now to wander towards. And this time, again, I'll trust that it's gonna be for me. I fight the urge to listen to the voice telling me this is silly, and just agree with it. It's completely silly. That's what love affairs are. So I walk to the next thing. I keep my eyes peeled for something I can pick up or snap a picture of with my phone. Something small that wants me to find it. Something that has meaning hidden in it and it's useful for my quote-unquote real life right now. A symbol of sorts that I never would have found had I not taken this simple, dabbling step into the unknown. And again, I'll fight the urge to listen to the part of me saying, This won't work. This is a waste of time. Because what if wasting a small amount of time is exactly what I need right now? What if, for just a couple more minutes, I allow myself the gift of wandering and wondering what's out here for me to find. And when the music ends, I'll get back to life, perhaps just a little bit different.
