Sober In Mexico

I’m in Mexico celebrating my 50th birthday with my wife and coming up on one year sober, and it has me thinking about how differently I travel now. I tell the story of the time I drank my way into missing my flight, getting pulled off the plane, and spending a long night stranded at the airport detoxing.

Mexico Trip And Sobriety Milestone

Hello everyone. Sorry this is about a day late, but uh just in Mexico decided to come with my wife to Mexico for my 50th birthday as well as as of March 2nd it will be my one-year sobriety day. So here I am in beautiful Mexico at the absolutely amazing Bahia Principe uh Gran Tequila Resort, which is an adults-only resort. Absolutely amazing.

The Drinking Vacation Mindset

So want to tell you a little story because while I was on the plane coming down here with my wife, I thought about all the times I came to Mexico that I was just completely fucking smashed and drinking my ass off. So I remember this one time, and obviously, you know, before when I'd go to Mexico, it was basically just a shit show for drinking. But I was always a very fun, energetic drunk. I was never a sloppy drunk. Or so I thought.

Missing The Flight From Being Drunk

So this one trip in Mexico, I uh obviously spent the seven days absolutely getting shit-faced, and then the day that I was supposed to be leaving the resort, I was basically too drunk to even function and get myself back to the airport for my flight. So I ended up obviously making I have a lot of friends at resorts and stuff, so I ended up uh being able to stay at the resort, because I basically obviously missed my flight. I was able to stay at the resort, which was very nice for me, but ended up going back to the resort for I believe it was about three more days, uh to you know, and then did my best to kind of figure like okay, I can't be this drunk if I'm going back home. So eventually, uh, you know, still drunk, but able to get back to the airport.

Now, what this stupid ass me fucking do? I get to the airport and I figure, hey, you know what? I'm I'm set now, I'm good. So I start drinking at the airport before my flight. Well, in my mind, I'm totally fine. You know, I'm I'm not totally drunk, I'll make it on a flight, so whatever. But I guess I was being so fucking like just loud with talking, again, not sloppy, but sloppy enough. That one of the air air stewardesses happened to see me. I won't mention what airline it was, because I love the airline and it wasn't their fault for what happened, it was mine. But uh, in all my geniusness, I uh ended up just you know being very friendly and loud, and ah, and you know, I've got fucking two beers going at once. So, fast forward a bit, I go to get on the plane. I'm almost home free, right? Wrong. So, as I'm getting on the plane, and I got I booked the premium premium seat, so uh, you know, basically like not first class, but you know what it is, like premium. So I was in like the first seat when you walk in on a plane, and as I'm walking in, there's this the this older lady, the uh stewardess, and as I'm walking on, I'm like, hi, I'm like, I may look drunk, but don't worry, I won't be drinking. And she looks at me and says, Oh, I know you won't be. And I was like, huh, that's weird. Why would she say that? So I sit in my chair, thinking, Alright, next stop, fucking Calgary. Well, then I have one of the uh other this guy come up, another stew, another uh stewardess,

Kicked Off The Plane By Crew

or steward, whatever you call it. Anyways, he says to me, Sir, we're gonna have to ask you to get off the plane. You cannot take this flight today. What? So, of course, I'm like, what the fuck? Why? And he says, one of our employees, I knew who the fuck it was, seen you drinking, and because you've had alcohol, we can't allow you to be on this flight. So I was obviously like, what the actual fuck? So I'm like, well, that's bullshit. So then I say, well, no, I I'm I'm fine. I had a few drinks, so does everyone. Like, what's the big deal? Well then the captain comes to talk to me. And of course I'm not making you know, I'm not being rowdy or anything, I'm just like, what the fuck? So the captain says, sir, unfortunately, even if you had one drink, legally we can't let you be on the plane. So let me think about this for a second. I can't have even one drink and be on a plane. Coming back from Mexico. I can assure you, everyone pretty much on this plane has had at least one drink. But I see where they're coming from. So I end up getting off the plane. They had to fucking delay the flight to get all my baggage and shit off. And I ended up uh basically stuh stranded at the airport that night, because I was, you know, too drunk, I guess, to uh do anything, and I ended up spending the whole night in the airport just wandering around, detoxing, like what a fucking night. And then I was able to get the next flight out, but oh my god.

So that's uh me being sober here in Mexico, enjoying all of this and not having to worry about missing flights or whatever, really makes

me happy. So, anyways, I just celebrated my 50th birthday yesterday with my wife. We met some amazing people here, and also all the staff that I know at this resort just made it so absolutely amazing. So, to all of you, uh friends of mine who are seeing this video, thank you all so much. I had an amazing 50th birthday, and that is my story.
