Skin Myths: Pores Don’t Have Doors

Welcome to Skin Myths, Busted — from Keys Natural Skincare, where we take the skincare nonsense apart so your skin doesn’t have to. I’m Bob Root. Today’s myth: hot water opens your pores and cold water closes them.

We’ve all done the routine. Steam the face to open the pores, then splash icy water to slam them shut. Feels scientific. Feels powerful. Is mostly nonsense.

Here’s the deal: your pores are not tiny doors. They don’t have muscles. They can’t open and close on command, no matter how dramatically you splash. A pore is basically an opening for a hair follicle and its oil gland. It’s a hole. Holes do not have hinges.

Now, temperature can change how things look temporarily. Warmth softens the oil and debris in a pore so it’s easier to clean. Cold can make skin contract slightly so pores briefly look smaller. But looking smaller for ten minutes is not the same as open and closed. Nobody’s pores are clocking in and out.

And here’s the one that really stings: you can’t permanently shrink your pores. Pore size is mostly genetics and oil production. You can keep them clear so they look smaller, but you cannot will them away — and any product promising to close them forever is selling you a feeling.

At Keys, we’d rather tell you the truth: keep your skin clean and balanced, and your pores will look their best. That’s it. No hinges required.

So steam if it feels nice. Splash cold water if it wakes you up. Just know your pores aren’t doors — and they were never listening to you anyway.

And that’s today’s myth — busted. Keys Natural Skincare: real ingredients, real science, refreshingly little nonsense. We’ll see you next myth.
