"Let me know if this episode has helped you"

Guilt can feel like proof you’re a good person. It can also become the quiet weight that keeps you stuck, replaying the same moment on repeat while life moves on around you. We’re slowing things down and getting real about what guilt is, why it shows up, and how to stop letting it run your mind and your mood.

I talk through the difference between healthy guilt that guides reflection and accountability, and lingering guilt that turns into self-punishment. Lets look at how guilt often connects to your values, your beliefs, and your internal moral compass, and why getting clear on what you stand for makes it easier to respond with honesty instead of shame. You’ll hear practical ways to ask the right questions, take responsibility, and stop carrying a burden that no longer serves you.

I also tackle a common trap: the belief that holding onto guilt is “being responsible”. I share a gentler, stronger alternative where you can regret a choice, learn from it, make amends where possible, and still give yourself permission to move forward. Your past can inform your future, but it doesn’t have to define it.

If you’re ready to release what’s weighing you down and step back into confidence, press play. Follow the podcast, share this with someone who needs it, and leave a review so more people can find the message.

Pause The Rush And Breathe

SPEAKER_02

Check the clock, hit the pause, leave the stress behind. We're shifting gears, clearing space inside the mind. From the hustle to the healing, yeah, we know all the drill, but life is moving fast. It's time to make it stand still. So take a breath.

Welcome And Why We Reset

SPEAKER_01

Hi, gorgeous. Welcome to Smell the Roses with Steph. I'm so grateful you're here. This podcast is a space for those moments in life when you know something needs to change. When you've spent so much time taking care of everyone else that you've forgotten yourself. When you feel stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected, or simply ready for more. For me, the rose became a symbol of transformation. A reminder that even in life's hardest seasons, there is always a possibility of growth, renewal, and becoming. Each week I will explore the mindset shifts, life lessons, personal growth, and soulful conversations that help us reconnect with who we truly are and who we're capable of becoming. I talk about confidence, courage, healing, purpose, relationships, boundaries, self-worth, and creating a life that feels deeply aligned with your heart. Because no matter where you are right now, your story isn't finished. You can reset, you can reinvent, and you can rise. I invite you to take a deep breath, settle in, and let's smell the roses together. Let's

Naming The Feeling Of Guilt

SPEAKER_01

talk about something we've all felt at one point in our lives. Something that can stem from decisions we make towards others and ourselves, and over time they can really start to wear us down. It's one of the few emotions that can truly eat you alive if you don't break it down and process it correctly. This is something that may have first appeared when we inflicted pain on another living being, when we saw disappointment on our parents' face or when we closed our eyes at night and replayed our drunken actions and behaviour from a night out with friends. What is it you ask?

SPEAKER_00

Guilt.

SPEAKER_01

What if I told you that guilt is a natural human emotion, but staying trapped in guilt is a choice? What if I told you that you can remove the feeling of guilt from being attached to your past actions? You'd want to know how, right?

Why Guilt Exists And Lingers

SPEAKER_00

First you need to understand guilt and why we feel it.

SPEAKER_01

Guilt is a social emotion that evolved as human beings increasingly depended on cooperation for survival. It arises when we believe we have violated our own values, harmed someone else, or failed to meet a standard we consider important. While the initial feeling of guilt is largely automatic, the story we continue to tell ourselves afterwards is often a choice. Healthy guilt can guide reflection, accountability, and growth. But when guilt lingers long after the lesson has been learned, it can transform from a useful signal into a self-imposed burden. The emotion itself may be natural, but our decision to hold on to it is definitely where the choice begins.

Values And Your Moral Compass

SPEAKER_01

Knowing your values and beliefs is where you need to start if you are acting or behaving outside of what you value, then you're acting outside of what aligns with your beliefs. This contradiction can cause you to feel guilty about a decision you've made, an action you've taken, or even something you failed to do. Your moral compass needs to be intact in order for you to decide whether your actions were acceptable or not.

SPEAKER_00

Only you can truly judge your behaviour because you are the one who has to live with the decisions you make.

SPEAKER_01

If you're

Make Amends Then Release It

SPEAKER_01

holding on to guilt, you need to ask yourself, what is this feeling of guilt trying to teach me? If it points to making amends with someone, reach out. If you need to have a conversation and apologize, then do it. Correct your mistake if possible, and then move on. At some point, you need to acknowledge that there's nothing more you can do.

SPEAKER_00

If it no longer serves you, release it.

SPEAKER_01

Most people are far more focused on their own lives and mistakes than they are on yours. So why relive your past over and over again? By constantly replaying it, you're keeping yourself trapped in guilt long after the lesson has been learned. You have the power to release it.

SPEAKER_00

So let it go.

Responsibility Without Self-Punishment

SPEAKER_01

Many people unconsciously believe that holding on to guilt is a form of responsibility. They think that if they stop feeling guilty, it means they didn't care about what happened. In reality, responsibility and self-punishment are not the same thing. You can deeply regret a choice, learn from it, and still grant yourself permission to move forward.

SPEAKER_00

Every experience changes us.

SPEAKER_01

The person you are today is not the same person who made that mistake. Guilt is meant to be a teacher, not a lifelong companion. Its purpose is to wake us up, not weigh us down. Once we've acknowledged the mistake, learned the lesson, and done what we can to make things right, guilt has completed its work. The challenge then is not learning how to feel guilty, it's learning how to thank guilt for its message and let it leave. Growth happens when we carry the wisdom forward, not the punishment. As

Questions To Move Forward

SPEAKER_01

you leave today, ask yourself, is my guilt helping me grow? Or is it holding me back? Align your actions with your values. Trust the lessons you've learned and release the guilt that no longer serves you. Your past can inform your future, but it does not have to define it. Let go. Move forward and give yourself permission to fully live an incredible life. Thank
