Why Creatine Deserves Clarity

Welcome back to TUT Radio. Today's show is about creatine, and no, it's not to convince you that you need another supplement. Today's show is to help you understand what creatine actually does so you can make an informed decision about using it. What Creatine Is And Isn’t

for. So Vin, we gotta start with what actually is creatine? Explain.

Yeah, so creatine is a naturally occurring compound made from the amino acids arginine, glycine, and methionine. It's not a hormone stimulant, it's not a steroid. And having said that, the next logical question is well, how does it work, right? Simply put, it helps your body's energy production systems work better, right? In order to understand creatine's role, we need to explain how creatine and ATP are connected. So, what's ATP? When your muscles contract, they're spending ATP. And ATP stands for adenosine triphosphate. And the most important part is this word triphosphate. Tri meaning three, and phosphate referring to the three phosphate groups attached to the molecule. Now just hang bear with me for a second here. You think of those phosphate groups like three batteries stacked on top of one another. The energy your muscles use is stored in the bond holding that last phosphate onto a TP. When your muscle needs energy, it breaks off that last phosphate. Now, ATP, triphosphate, has become ADP, which stands for adenosine diphosphate. So instead of three phosphates, it now only has two. And inside your muscle cells, most creatine is stored as phosphocreatine. The prefix phospho meaning creatine is carrying an extra phosphate group around almost like a spare battery. You can think of ADP as a dead battery. It's not useless, it just needs a little bit of recharging. So imagine you're using a cordless drill. The drill runs on a rechargeable battery. ATP is the battery that's inside the drill, and every time you pull the trigger, the battery loses a little bit of charge, and eventually it's almost empty. Creatine is like having someone standing next to you with a fully charged spare battery. And so instead of plugging in the drill into a charger and waiting, you just pop the old battery out and snap a fresh one in. And instantly you get right back to work. And now, however, eventually those spare batteries also need to be recharged, and that's what creatine is doing. It's not making new energy, it's just providing the missing phosphate that turns ADP back into ATP.

Okay, that that makes sense. So let's think of creatine as your body's natural energy assistant. The goal of taking creatine isn't to flood your body with as much as possible. The goal is to saturate your muscles' creatine storage sites. Think of your muscles like a sponge. A dry sponge absorbs a lot of water as it fills up, it absorbs less and less. Eventually, it's completely saturated. Your muscles work the same way. Most people can only store about 120 to 140 grams of creatine in their muscles naturally. Without supplementation, those stores are almost full. Taking creatine simply helps top them off. Okay,

Who Benefits And How To Take

so now that we hopefully understand creatine's role in the body, let's answer some of the most commonly asked questions about creatine's practical applications and maybe dispel a few myths along the way. So, first then, should I take it?

Yeah, I would say for most people, yeah, you could definitely take it. Creatine, again, is gonna be most consistently useful for people performing consistent resistance training, you know, sprinting, repeated high-intensity activities, it can support improvements in strength, power, you know, your lean body mass when combined with training. But again, it brings up a point. It's important to remember that creatine, like any other supplement, is not a substitution for proper training, proper nutrition, and good sleep habits.

All right, next question. What is creatine loading and should I do it?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I think this is another point that many people misunderstand. It's kind of like an older concept, I think, at this point. But creatine loading is taking 20 grams of creatine per day for about a week, right? And this doesn't allow your muscles to store more creatine than someone just taking the daily allotment of five grams. It just expedites the process. It's gonna fill the tank up faster, right? You think of filling like a bathtub, for example. You can turn the f you can turn on the faucet on full blast and fill the whole thing up in 10 minutes, or you can turn it on halfway and fill it in 30 minutes. The bathtub is gonna end up just as full. Loading just simply gets you there sooner.

So Okay, so loading isn't necessary. So then what would you say are the most common recommendations for using creatine?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, there's a bunch of different types of creatine out there, creatine monohydrate being the most extensively studied form of it. The more expensive forms have not consistently demonstrated any sort of superior results. So for most people, a plain creatine monohydrate product is more than sufficient. Choosing a product with independent third-party testing can, of course, provide additional assurance regarding purity and label accuracy and things like that. But for the most part, the cheapest one you can buy is gonna give you the same sort of results. For most people, again, like I kind of touched on, you want to take three to five grams per day. Again, these are for most healthy adults. This is the most simple standard approach to taking creatine. Larger individuals may sometimes use body weight-based dosing, but for most recreational trainees, you don't have to overcomplicate it. Three to five grams is going to be more than sufficient. Timing also is another thing that people get all wigged out about. It does not really matter that much because there's just not enough strong evidence to suggest that taking creatine immediately before or after training produces a meaningful advantage for most people. Really, it's just about are you taking it every day for a long period of time? And and a good tip is just to take it whenever you're most likely to remember to take it. With breakfast. If you have a protein shake every day, throw it in there after training, you know, with dinner, whatever, whenever is most convenient for you, as long as you're taking it consistently.

All right, so I get this question a lot too. Is is creatine something that you need to cycle?

SPEAKER_01

No. Uh it's it there's no real established data to suggest that you need to cycle on and off creatine. In most healthy people, using the recommended doses, it shouldn't be an issue, right? So your continued daily use maintains muscle saturation and stopping is going to cause levels to gradually return towards baseline, right? Creatine, again, like we already have covered, will not replace the behaviors that are actually going to change your body, that being proper training and proper nutrition. It's just going to simply help those behaviors produce slightly better results.

I really like this next question. And that is if I'm a beginner in the gym, is it okay for me to take creatine?

SPEAKER_01

No, beginners do not need to earn the right to take creatine. Again, however, the fundamentals like learning proper technique, training consistently, practicing progressive overload, eating enough protein and getting enough sleep will produce far greater initial results. Again, creatine is going to support the work, but it won't it won't replace poor strength training practices.

Okay. So what if I'm a woman? Should I take it or will it make me bulky? You hear that all the time.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, creatine is not exclusively a men's supplement. You know, women use the same phosphocreatine energy system as men, and probably will receive similar performance and training benefits from taking creatine. Again, research is going to support creatine as generally safe and potentially beneficial for women across all different life stages. Creatine, again, like you like you pointed out, does not automatically make women bulky. It does not automatically make men bulky. Meaningful muscle growth is still going to require a bunch of training stimulus and consistency over time, with, of course, appropriate nutrition.

Okay, so that should be a relief for a lot of women. All right. So if I'm over 50, is it safe for me to use? This is really an important question, I think. So have at it.

Yeah, so I mean, as we age, we're naturally going to begin to lose muscle mass, strength, and power, right? This is kind of a given. It's a process known as sarcopenia. And beginning around age 30, muscle mass gradually declines, and the rate of loss accelerates later in life if resistance training isn't maintained. And this loss affects much more than, of course, your appearance. One of the strongest predictors of living independently isn't how much you weigh or even how much cardio you do. It's whether or not you have enough strength to continue doing everyday tasks, right? Researchers have consistently found that lower muscle strength is associated with a higher risk of disability, hospitalization, and even all-cause mortality in older adults. So, yeah, it's especially good for you if you're over 50,

Creatine Myths Put To Rest

I'd say.

Alright, so there's always a lot of misinformation surrounding creatine and its use. So let's just do some myth busting. Number one, creatine damages your kidneys.

In healthy people using recommended doses, the available evidence does not show that creatine causes kidney damage. The confusion partly comes from creatinine, which is a breakdown product commonly measured in blood tests. Right? And so creatine supplementation can sometimes raise serum creatinine without actually reducing kidney function. Which means that someone taking creatine should tell their healthcare provider before lab testing so that the results can be interpreted properly. Okay, number two, creatine is a steroid. Creatine is not an anabolic steroid. Anabolic steroids are synthetic derivatives of testosterone. As we said, creatine is a naturally occurring compound involved in cellular energy production. Their structures and mechanisms are completely different. Creatine does not replace testosterone and does not produce steroid-like hormonal effects, contrary to what a lot of people would suggest.

Myth number three: creatine causes dehydration and cramping.

No, research does not support the claim that creatine increases dehydration or muscle cramping alone. Creatine is not a replacement for hydration. People should still drink according to thirst, activity level, environment, and individual needs. There's also no strong evidence to suggest that everyone using creatine needs to drink an excessive amount of water to counterbalance it.

Four, you have to take it right after your workout.

The evidence suggests timing has little practical importance for most people. Again, like we were covering earlier, taking it consistently every day is what's going to matter much more than taking it precisely at 4.17 p.m. after your workout.

Okay. This is one in the beginning I actually wondered myself, and that is if you stop taking creatine, will you lose all of your muscle?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I think this one is pretty scary for some people when they're deciding whether or not to start taking creatine or not. The reality of it is if you stop supplementing, muscle creatine stores gradually are going to return towards baseline over the next several weeks. You may lose some associated water, but your body doesn't suddenly lose all the muscle you built. Remember, your muscle was built through the training and the nutrition and recovery, right? All all creatine does is simply help support that training.

Okay, I don't know where this one came from, but it says if you eat meat, creatine won't work. Is that true?

SPEAKER_01

No, that's not true. People who eat meat already consume some creatine. You could argue that maybe vegetarians will experience a larger increase in muscle creatine stores because they start lower, but omnivores still benefit from supplementation.

Okay, and the last one, you need to buy expensive forms of creatine. Yes or no?

SPEAKER_01

It's funny because a lot of these myths seemingly have the same end goal, which is to make people want to go buy more and more creatine, right? So it's all marketing at the end of the day, right? You'll hear things like creatine HCL, buffered creatine, liquid creatine, creatine nitrate. And as we mentioned earlier, despite all of that great marketing, creatine monohydrate is the gold standard. It's the most researched, it's the least expensive, and consistently the most effective, right? So hopefully that clears up some of the confusion regarding some of the myths surrounding creatine because at the end of the day, it's pretty simple, right?

Make The Call And Focus Basics

So let's circle back to where we started. The goal of this episode was to never convince you that you need to run out and go buy creatine. It was simply to help you learn more about creatine and how it works. Remember, creatine is not a steroid, it's not a shortcut, it isn't going to replace a good training program, enough protein, good sleep, or consistent effort. It's simply a naturally occurring compound that helps support one of your body's normal energy systems. And if you're someone who resistance trains, performs high-intensity exercise, or you're getting older and your goal is to help preserve your strength and independence, then creatine is one of the most well-researched supplements available and may be worth purchasing. And if you're not interested in taking it, that's okay too. The fundamentals have not changed. Lift weights, eat enough protein, stay active, sleep well. Those habits will always have the greatest impact on your health. Creatine simply has the potential to get you a little bit more out of the work than you've already done. Hopefully, if you were on the fence before listening to this episode, you can now make that decision with confidence instead of confusion. And whether or not your answer is yes or not right now, at least now it can be a more informed decision, and that's exactly what we were hoping to accomplish.
