Hello.
SPEAKER_03Welcome to Un Sunday's Wee, a Formula One podcast. I'm Rachel. I'm Lexi. God, we finally nailed that. That was good. We nailed it after two weeks of flubbing it up.
SPEAKER_01You know, we just had to try some different things. I don't know if we were overthinking the last two times, but Or not paying attention. Or not paying attention. I'm tired. For me, not paying attention. Undercaffeinated. No, we were overly caffeinated last time. Overly caffeinated, then underly caffeinated. Or under hydrated.
SPEAKER_03Probably a combination.
SPEAKER_01Because it was like the end of the day. True. True. Didn't have my electrolytes that day. Specifically, I remember.
SPEAKER_03That's that's the ticket. No electrolytes. Horrible intro. Yeah, gotta get those electrolytes. Um, well, yes, hello everyone. Today is our Austrian Grand Prix recap. Yay! An interesting, like a good race, a really good race.
SPEAKER_01Like excellent qualifying.
SPEAKER_03Excellent qualifying. So funny. And we'll we'll probably talk about it more once we get there. But I literally sent Lexi a voice note. We couldn't maybe even play it like two minutes left.
SPEAKER_00We should. We should do it. We should do it up when we talk about it. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Because I was I so Rachel was working and I uh had a couple things to do. So I didn't watch it live, but watched it before Rachel. So when I watched it, I voice noted her and was like, I don't want to give anything away. It was really great. Be prepared, like chaos. And so Rachel gets home and watched it, and she voice noted me like two minutes left and was like, I it's good, but I don't I'm like waiting for me.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I'm like, where is the chaos? I was like, this can't be it.
SPEAKER_01It was so good. And like it was like four voice notes in a row of her just like screaming. It was delightful anyway. Yeah, we'll play it.
SPEAKER_03Um, but yeah, so as per usual, we'll do F1 News, Hot Goss, and then we'll dive into a little bit of practice, a little bit of qualifying and race, and then wrap it up with Formula Run Club.
SPEAKER_01Another really solid week. Yes, and then talk about Silverstone. Oh my god, we have to select even Run Club for Silverstone. Yes, and I'm excited about Silverstone. I will be watching, I was telling Rachel, I'll be watching it. John and I are going to visit his parents, and they'll be like his sister and friends. And so I was like, I have to watch it with non-F1 people. And I think You might get a little annoyed. I think John knows enough though that he can answer all the questions or just like leave me in a room with my laptop.
SPEAKER_03What did you say? You're like, I'm gonna go sit outside in a canoe.
SPEAKER_01I said I'm gonna go in a canoe with my with my phone on your phone. Be in peace. Yeah, I gotta watch the race and then zoom home to record. Oh my god. Oh, are you coming home? We haven't even talked about that. You're coming home on Sunday? Yes, yeah. We're leaving earlier on Friday, so we can come home early on Sunday. But I think since the race is at nine, we'll wait. It'll be a good compromise because John's mom will be excited that he'll stay later, but then I get to watch the race in real time. So it'll work out for everyone.
SPEAKER_03It's gonna be awesome. Yay. First piece of news Mohammed Ben Salem, the devil that he is. The FIA voted for no more term limits for the FIA presidents. Our president forever. Like literally.
SPEAKER_01Which we talked about this. I don't know which week it was. He's only been he's only been FIA president for what? Not even a whole term. No, I think it's been two terms. Is it been two? Okay, okay. He's in the middle of his second term. Okay, okay. So he's been re-elected once. Yes. Okay.
SPEAKER_03Um, because he ran unopposed, remember? Right, because Carlos Science Sr. dropped out. Sad. Um, but it passed with 91% majority according to BBC Sport, which is crazy to me. I'm like, I would like this is like the Oscars or like the Academy. I'm like, who is in the academy? Who is in this members club? Yeah, how many like who is voting for this?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, how many people make up 91%? Who's the 90%? That's also true. Is it like nine people? Yeah. Nine out of 10? Yeah, I need to know more.
SPEAKER_03I just I what is there bribing that's happening? It's honestly knowing everyone in all the conference events, probably. Um, sorry, MBS. But at the time of the so now there's a couple things that are in place. And so at the time of election, you must be 70 years or you must be under 70 years old, or 70 years. He's like 64. Oh, okay, okay, okay. So he is like approaching 70, which is funny to me.
SPEAKER_01How often did we say they have to be re-elected?
SPEAKER_03Is it like I think it's still every four years. Four years. Yeah, I think the term is still every four years. It's just now it was longer than that. Maybe I I could be wrong. You can yeah, Google it really quick, quick. Uh FIA. But that I thought that was comical. It's like 64 years old and approaching, not approaching 70, but like on the way to 70. And then they tightened candidacy rules. So you have to have like a significant amount of of experience as a member of the FIA um member club or the governing body.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so it is four years. Previously, it was three four-year terms. That's why I was getting 12. Yep. There are 245 member clubs. Oh, so that's a lot. Like people in the club, or that so many clubs. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_03Okay, so there are a lot of people.
SPEAKER_01Actually, a lot of people were like, okay, no term limits. Wow. Interesting. Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_03Well, and I remember last time we were talking about this, we were talking about like why is MBS controversial, and I found a little bit of something, something. So Robert. Um Robert Reed, who I think, oh, I can't remember what position he was in. I'm so sorry. I should have written that down. But Robert Reed was a in the FIA as I think a higher-level official. And so a lot of people when MBS became president left, and I think Robert Reed was one of them. And in his resignation statement, he said he felt the fundamental principles were being eroded and that raising legitimate concerns was not always welcome by the current president, aka MBS.
SPEAKER_01And he I think he served as the FIA deputy president for sport. Okay, thank you. Yes, thanks for clarifying.
SPEAKER_03You know, we love being factually active. Yeah, I don't want Rachel, I don't want Rachel to stay up all night. Yeah, no, we would. Um, but I just think this is interesting, and we'll get into it, but obviously with the yellow flag and sending Q3.
SPEAKER_01Interesting timing. Very interesting timing. And what happened in Monaco, obviously. Yes, yes, yeah. Exactly. Exactly. This is why we love F1. Honestly, like, this is why there's so much chaos.
SPEAKER_03There, and I don't remember, I feel like I say this every episode, but I don't remember this much chaos happening.
SPEAKER_01Do you think it's just because like, okay, it could be because we're paying more. I was gonna say podcasts. Absolutely. I'm always looking at everything, we're always talking about it, and like obviously it was always taking over your brain, like it does for F1 fans.
SPEAKER_03But no, but I think it's like forcing us to learn so much more about the sport, which is great. Yeah. Loving it. Yeah. Um, but yeah, I think there was a lot that I just didn't dive into because I do have that's totally fair.
SPEAKER_01I do have to pause and tell everyone, Angie, Lydia's mom, was texting me last night, and we'll get into qualifying, obviously, but texting me about the yellow flag, and she was just like going off about like all of the different conspiracies and what about this and what about that. And she was like, I can't believe this is taking over my brain. Like, thanks a lot. And I was like, This is why we started the podcast. And also, thank God some of my friends are into it. I can't believe you went so long with only Susan and Elise.
SPEAKER_03And barely them. I think I was watching for maybe two years before maybe one year before we like went to the race in 2024 and got them hooked that then.
SPEAKER_01I have said this so many times. I'm so sorry that I didn't just freaking watch Drive to Survive. That's fine. I I you know, if you have friends again, it's my own fault.
SPEAKER_00If you have friends that you need to obsess about F1, have them listen to this episode.
SPEAKER_01Yes, pause it where it's at, make note of the time limit. Yes, because it's chaotic and delightful, and no matter what kind of nerd you want to nerd out, you can nerd out with F1. Oh my god. That's my soapbox.
SPEAKER_03Yes, I know. I love it. I love it. Um, heat hazard was declared in Austria.
SPEAKER_01Yes, Austria was hot for in general, but especially for Austria.
SPEAKER_03I think I saw what was it, 91 degrees Fahrenheit air temp, and then track was like 125, 130. That is so hot. That is so warm.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so they had to be fitted for a driver cooling system, which are those goofy looking vests. And they don't have to wear it, but they do need to add the weight that would have been so everyone had a little bit of weight added, basically.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's the most simple version of it. And I guess they pumped the liquid, like the cooling liquid, through the vest.
SPEAKER_01Then Max in the again, we'll get into the race and not to spoil her, but Max in the cooldown room was talking about how uh was it Kimmy asked Max or George asked Max, did you drink in the car? Like, did you drink water? And he was like, No, it gets warm like tea. Yeah, it tastes like tea. Gross, gross, no, disgusting.
SPEAKER_03Maybe it doesn't taste like tea, but it's the uh temperature.
SPEAKER_01Yes, which is so hot. That is disgusting.
SPEAKER_03Gross.
SPEAKER_01So anyway, glad everyone was safe.
SPEAKER_03I was gonna look and see if any drivers opted not to wear the cooling vest.
SPEAKER_01But I didn't look like I think everyone probably I was gonna say it was odd because it didn't look like Kimmy like you know, when they take half their race suit off, it didn't look like they did, but maybe they took them off.
SPEAKER_03They might have taken it off like after they waved right away, yeah, or something like that.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. Um and then a bunch of teams, like nine out of the 11 teams, showed up with upgrades for Austria. Cadillac had the most upgrades, I think I saw. It was like 10 or 11, and we all know how that clearly they didn't work. No, no, and what's so sad is we'll get into free practice, but like free practice one, they were actually like not, they were still firmly in the midfield, but it was much better. And then it was just everything was on fire.
SPEAKER_03Literally, literally everything was on fire.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, Cadillac, Alpine, Audi, Haas, uh, Racing Bulls, Mercedes, McLaren, Ferrari, and Red Bull. And I did find a breakdown of all of it, but there were so many upgrades that I didn't even feel like it was relevant to like go into it necessarily because it was so many. Like Red Bull had a ton, Cadillac had a ton, um, and then everyone else had like two or three at least.
SPEAKER_03Looks like Cadillac 10, Red Bull, and Audi 7, Alpine 5, Ferrari 4, Mercedes, McLaren, Racing Bulls, Haas 2, Williams and Aston Martin didn't have any. Which yeah.
SPEAKER_01Hopefully they'll have some.
SPEAKER_03You know what though? Looking at this, I'm like, I guess it doesn't matter if you've got 10 or you don't have any upgrades because you're still out of the race.
SPEAKER_01I mean, like, I get Cadillac had to kind of like get enough data to then be like, these are our upgrades, but oh my god.
SPEAKER_03They're a new no, I think it's less embarrassing that they had 10 upgrades and it still didn't work. Like they're still trying to figure things out. I think we can maybe cut them some slack. They have been looking a lot better. But again, like the yeah, and Williams and Acid Martin, again, they didn't look great, but they also didn't have any upgrades. So right, right, right, right. Fair enough. Um I don't have too much other info on this, but the FAA banned the Macarena wing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think there's an article that I found from Motorsport, but it's really it doesn't get too much into it other than the Macarena wing is it they call it the Ferrari's exhaust wings, and they're tight tightening it up in 2027, which is just a gray area, yeah. Which everyone has the movable wings, but I guess the specific flippy-doo. Yeah, which is it, I mean Ferrari's doing well, but is it really giving them that much of an advantage?
SPEAKER_03I don't necessarily seem like it and hard to tell yet, but yeah, I think it's hard to tell. So they can still have it for the rest of the season.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yes, and then I mean the article I found it like went into all kinds of other Ferrari things, so I was like, okay, this is notable, we're gonna move on.
SPEAKER_03We're making note, and that's it. Yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Um, and this was really interesting. Yeah, Louis Lewis Hamilton. So everyone's like, a comeback, a comeback. Well, we've just found out that he was severely injured last year in Barcelona, so there was a big crash, and he knocked a disc in his neck, and for nine weeks was not able to do anything, had daily chiropractor appointments, and had trouble sleeping. So he's essentially healing or healed, and everyone's like, Oh, now he's back to his normal, like literally back to his normal self.
SPEAKER_03It makes so much sense why he was so miserable last season. Like it not only was the car, but he was feeling like absolute poop.
SPEAKER_01And had the worst engineers ever. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Not the right fit for his engineer.
SPEAKER_01No, it was painful hearing them talk.
SPEAKER_03I think that can having any sort of physical injury, even when you're not a professional athlete, it can really get you down. So I can't even imagine being a high achieving, high performance athlete, like literally a legend, and you're older and you're in pain and you're underperforming. I'm I'm sure he was depressed. I would be.
SPEAKER_01And he can't sleep. Yeah. Oh my god. And and not only is it an injury in general to a very important part of your body to your neck, but for the FM driver. Yeah. Yeah. Because um, I that Dak Shepard, Susie Wolf podcast, they were talking about like your neck, you know, it weighs like how however much, but when you get the G force on it, it makes your neck go from like five pounds to like 90 pounds or something like that. Those numbers, I'm just pulling them out of nowhere. But it was basically saying like you have to be so strong. And Susie was talking about as a woman strengthening your neck, it was like so big and strong, she would like cover it with her hair, but you lose it quickly. So if you don't keep up your neck strength, yeah, it's a problem. Yeah, and so Lewis having an injury like that, I just can't even. I'm actually really impressed he kept driving. No, same.
SPEAKER_03And I I understand why he hit it. I feel like if they would have said anything about it, people would have unfortunately come at him and been like, oh, he's using that as an excuse. Oh, freaked out.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Can you imagine the rumors? And he just moved to Ferrari. And I'm sure Fred knew. Like, I'm sure like his.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god. I 100%.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. But crazy. So anyway, glad Lulu is doing better. Glad he's healing. Angela, you're doing great work. Yeah, thanks for keeping him healthy. Yeah, getting him healthy. I thought that was crazy. We should do, we should do one day like a neck workout. Oh my god. Wouldn't that be funny? I don't even want to know. But yeah, we could. Like the F1 movie where Brad Pitt's like doing it in the hotel room. Yes. Oh yeah. Yeah. Uh was he doing like a side plank? Yeah, but like on his neck. Yeah. Like on yeah. Yeah. That sounds awful. That would be funny. We should record ourselves trying it and failing miserably.
SPEAKER_03New idea.
SPEAKER_01That'd be funny.
SPEAKER_03Unlocked. Yeah. Uh Lando's wax statue. So cute. Madame Tussauds. I think that's how you say it. I think that's right. Tussauds? Yeah. Anyway, the video of him is really it's comical. It's funny, yeah.
SPEAKER_01He's very Lando has been having great, a great couple of weeks.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Great energy. I think it took like two years for them to make it. I think the process started two years ago. Maybe it didn't.
SPEAKER_01I know it took so I don't remember what the timeline was, but the art the amount of artists working on it and how long it takes is crazy.
SPEAKER_03I just can't even imagine.
SPEAKER_01I was gonna say the only thing that doesn't look right is his eyebrows. But I wonder if maybe the reference they had was for if it's from two years ago. Maybe his eyebrows have changed.
SPEAKER_03Because like now they look, they look beautifully perfect on his statue. Incredible. And they look fine now. They're just they're more like um it looks like maybe he has a scar on one of them or something. Like they're just kind of a little askew, which is fine. He still looks great. Yeah, it's like again, why that would be yeah, he I think he walked up to it and was like, is that what I look like? It's like seeing yourself in the reverse image on like a camera or something. You're like, wait, is that what I look like?
SPEAKER_01Oh, that's so freaky.
SPEAKER_03I don't like that one bit. I would not like that one.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but he he like held his little thumb up next to it. It's so funny. Yeah. Lando. We'll have to go, we'll have to go to London and see it. Um, John had some good Lando quotes because Lando, so obviously we talked about his new shirt that he got last week. Oh my god. And then this week he was being interviewed and they were basically like, You won, you won um the Red Bull ring last year. Like, you really like this track. Why do you really like it? And Lando was like, You gotta have big balls. Yeah. And John was like, Lando is being crazy. Like, first he's vegan, now he's got big balls. Like he's just living his best life.
SPEAKER_03It was so funny. I can't. His mind is uh it's one track right now, maybe. Yeah, a little bit. Yeah. And good again, good for him.
SPEAKER_01Good for him. Good for him. Alex Earl, now's the time.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I think uh Monaco is gonna be the never-ending storyline forever. Yeah, we're gonna be able to do it. It wouldn't be a podcast without mentioning Monaco.
SPEAKER_01We almost started the podcast with like, okay, so the Monaco Grand Prix, like just as a ha ha. Ha ha ha ha ha.
SPEAKER_03Um, I guess we talked about last week that there's gonna be a trial or hearing, and so the earliest that would be is Jul July 31st. I guess it could be expedited potentially, but that's more than 50 days after the race.
SPEAKER_01Which is just this is just insane. I can't.
SPEAKER_03I like what is the process of this? I don't know. Because what if nothing happens?
SPEAKER_01I not I hope nothing happens. I kind of hope that something does happen. You just are like praying for multi like maximum.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I don't know what there could be a number of different outcomes.
SPEAKER_01Wouldn't it be funny? Oh my god, I just thought about this. If Pierre's P3 gets taken away from him because of what this will do. Like, let's say like they they because was it for Oscar, right? What? Like the hearings, Oscar.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I don't think I think.
SPEAKER_01Do they end in P4?
SPEAKER_03Yes, I think what they're trying I think they're just trying to challenge yes, like Pierre's P3, but I think they're doing it, yeah, sure. So eventually maybe another driver could get on the podium. But it's hilarious. So because it's like I think Red Bull and McLaren are part of it, right?
SPEAKER_01Right. So Isaac or Oscar end up taking away Pierre's P3 after it's been like bopped around already.
SPEAKER_03That would be insanity. That would be so funny. And then I feel like Oscar would be like, I don't want this anymore.
SPEAKER_01No, Oscar doesn't, I don't Oscar has moved on fully. I think Isaac has too.
SPEAKER_03Pierre, though, I feel like would be upset. He was like on a bed, like cradling his trophy at his home. I think that might break him. It might a little bit. He didn't even look thrilled after today's race.
SPEAKER_01Well, he didn't, I mean, they didn't do very well. No, he didn't really do a lot.
SPEAKER_03Um, it is just just to note, and the I guess this makes sense, but the documents for the trial from I think each team that wants to participate need to be submitted in both English and French with physical copies sent to the ICA in Paris and a digital version in each language as well.
SPEAKER_01I feel bad for the poor legal team that has to deal with all of this. This is so much work for potentially nothing. Right?
SPEAKER_03Like what? Okay, ICA is the um, I think the okay, the court of appeal for the FIA. I just needed to make I to note that really quickly.
SPEAKER_01I did not know what the ICA was. So International Court of Appeal. Thank you. Thank you. You're welcome. Now I feel like I should have known that, but here we are. Here we are. Now we know. Uh so anyway. Okay, well, we'll continue to talk about. We'll maybe have an update in August, I guess. Who knows? Maybe, maybe, maybe they'll be something new. Who knows? Who knows? Monaco, the never-ending Grand Prix in 2026. Okay, hot guys. Um, I started typing out all of the random drivers and teams, and was like, I should have just put silly season because still there's been so many just like random rumors.
SPEAKER_03Are there is there anything new?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, did you see the Oscar McLaren? No. Okay, so I saw it's just purely a rumor, hot goss, but people are speculating that Oscar wants to leave McLaren and that Max is pushing to join McLaren because GP is at McLaren and Yoss is basically Yoss came out and had a quote that said, Max is not born to be in the midfield.
SPEAKER_03I did see that quote. And everyone literally just saw that quote.
SPEAKER_01Yes, and everyone's taking that quote and basically being like, Oh my god, he's going. To McLaren because GP's I guess because GP is going to McLaren and Zach Brown has always talked about Max. Even though Zach Brown has always been like, oh, I, you know, Oscar and Lando, like they're the team, like they're great, which I think he does like Oscar and Lando, but I think he would I don't know. It's Zach Brown, so it's hard to say.
SPEAKER_03Well, I think this wouldn't this is this doesn't surprise me. I feel like we've speculated on this before, but Oscar's manager, Mark Weber, was in high competition with Sebastian Vettel.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And I think there was a lot of lore surrounding that relationship and that rivalry. And I don't think he wants that for Oscar. So he's really trying to push Oscar to be like the number one driver at a team. And again, McLaren is just never gonna pick a number one driver. However, I feel like if Max is at McLaren, you kind of have to like pick Max. But then again, how many, how many teams have had two world drivers champions on a team at a time?
SPEAKER_01I don't know the answer to that, but I know, not right now, but I know that was absolutely a thing because it was like Nico Rotzberg and Lewis. There was Fernando with people, like various other drivers. Michael Schumacher also didn't he have partners with like other world drivers championships. And Vettel. Vettel would be an example.
SPEAKER_03Pacheco's not a world drivers championship from my quick search, which could be inaccurate, but it says Lewis Hamilton and Jensen Button at McLaren, Fernando Alonso and Kimmy Raikkonen at Ferrari, Sebastian Vettel and Kimmy Rikkenen at Ferrari, and then maybe a couple other ones. Okay, the last time was 2018. So I guess that wasn't that long ago. And that was Sebastian Vettel and Kimmy Rikkenen at Ferrari together.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so yeah, you're saying like if Lando and Max are on the same team. Yes. Yeah, then it'd be that situation.
SPEAKER_03But also Kimmy Raikkonen was a champion in 2007. So that's why I'm like Fernando.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03So like when's the last time there's been two recent championship champions as teammates? And I guess that would have been Lewis Hamilton and Jensen Button, because Lewis was 220 like 2008 and Jensen Button was 2009, and they raced in 2010.
SPEAKER_01I mean, what would be a really fun pairing would be Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen on the same team. Wow.
SPEAKER_03They they were had some fun racing today. They did. That was really exciting. Max and Ferrari seems wrong. It does. I don't think he could handle that from a from a strategy perspective.
SPEAKER_01They could handle it. They would just ignore him. I feel like that's what they do with Lewis, or that's what they were doing with Lewis.
SPEAKER_03I'm trying to think about like I don't think Lewis and Max are really cut from the same cloth. So I think that's a good thing.
SPEAKER_01Talk about a Nepo baby. No, truly a Nepo baby. Yeah. Um, but anyway, there's been the some more speculating about that. And then the other piece was George. I just need to say, would be fun to have our drivers on the same team. No, I know. It'd be so convenient. Also, the would be really convenient. So convenient. Way more convenient than what we got. We got we got John as a Russell fan. And he also is a very hardcore Mercedes fan. So when we're like, yay, someone, yeah, someone's like overtaking Kimmy and the driver's championship's gonna even out. John is like sad, even if it's like to George's detriment. Anyway, that's anyway.
SPEAKER_03Sorry, I interrupted you. I just thought was like we I know we've talked about that before, but anyway.
SPEAKER_01Anyway, I'm gonna like keep ranting about that forever. Yeah, forever. But okay, George spoke out and was like, I am not going anywhere, I'm not leaving Mercedes. I'll be racing here next year, 100%.
SPEAKER_03Um, and I just love that it says like it hasn't been discussed with Toto. We don't need to discuss it, it's not even a question mark. Yeah, I don't want to go into detail, but I would let but I will be here next year, and that's the fact about it. I'm like, wait a second.
SPEAKER_01I mean, is it just like an unspoken bond? Well, also, I think I think his contract isn't even up until later, like 20. I thought so. I don't know. There's so many contracts coming up. I can't I don't remember George's being one of them. And of course everyone has these clauses in their contracts.
SPEAKER_03It says his uh Okay, there's a couple different things. It says at least until the end of the 2026 Formula One season, but it could be a multi-year potentially going extending into 2027.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. All I'm saying is Silly Season's gonna be wild. Oh, other other rumor that came out this week was Liam Lawson leaving because of the F2 driver uh Nicola Toslov that basically Nicola came out or his manager came out and was like, he has a guaranteed seat in F1. And then everyone's like, what the heck? Who's leaving?
SPEAKER_03Why would they do that? They dragged Liam through the ringer. I think he's really proven himself. He's done so well this year. He's really and you know what? He's consistent. Yeah. He's in he was in what P9 today?
SPEAKER_01He is also an agent of chaos, so don't take him.
SPEAKER_03I think he's consistent, yeah. But not real, but again, like he's been P6 through P9 for like almost every race.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like do I think he needs to go race with Red Bull? No, I think Isaac is outperforming him significantly, but I think he's doing really well. So anyway, but those rumors were coming out, and then they racing bulls came out and was like, Liam's not going anywhere. It's just crazy.
SPEAKER_03There's so many rumors. Someone says one thing growing on me. So really I think so. Oh I don't for any particular reason, and I hate to use the word hate, but I really hate it for some reason, which is like not personal.
SPEAKER_01It's just like it also I think it's the drive to survive effect, like how I hated Max so much. Like drive to survive didn't play him as a villain, they played him as an annoying little whiny kid.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And I and again, I don't know. Going back to Daniel Ricardo, he speaks very highly of Daniel Ricardo. So I'm like, oh, if Danny likes him, I I trust him.
SPEAKER_01Danny speaks really highly, honestly, of everyone.
SPEAKER_03He speaks really highly really happy. He never trashes anyone. No. Really.
SPEAKER_01Mm-mm. No. So I don't know. Poor Liam. Anyway, those rumors were swirling around. And I mean, I'm glad we had a bunch of like good F2 people coming up, but it's just crazy how the rumors get.
SPEAKER_03I mean, I feel like we have enough newish people. I'm like, can we just pause for it? Well, like if we're although it is fun to get to know.
SPEAKER_01It is fun, but it is like a it does feel like you're getting a new friend and you're like, okay, what's this guy's deal?
SPEAKER_03Have you ever looked at I think I was looking at a list of um it might have been people racing in 24 hours of Le Mans. It's like Formula One drivers that are racing in um 24 hours of Le Mans. And half of the mind was like, never heard of you. Sorry, buddy. No, but it's probably people who were on the grid for a minute and then left.
SPEAKER_01And then it's like, see ya. Yeah, that makes sense. But no, I haven't. I should, because I probably wouldn't know a lot of it.
SPEAKER_03I feel like it's been a minute since we've it was like Logan Sargent. Oh, sure. Was like a one-off. Like I feel like, or I can't think of another example, but I mean we don't get too many of those, or like a Nick Defrize.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. When like Kevin Magnuson was raced NASCAR last week.
SPEAKER_03Right, but he was at least on the grid for a while. Yeah, I guess you're right.
SPEAKER_01Like there's just some people that it's like they pop in for like a season and was Logan Sarge Logan Sargent, was he in Drive to Survive? Okay, okay. And like I guess Mick Mick Mick Schumacher. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_03So that would be like that would be another pretty decent example of someone like kind of quick in and quick out, but he's just like a legendary name. So I don't know.
SPEAKER_01I haven't been watching long enough, obviously, to know a lot of the randos, but you know, I still feel like I'm getting to know all the like greats, you know, there's so many of them because I'm around for so long. Yeah. Um, I also on the subject of silly season, Flavio had some weird quote like he does about Franco. And it was basically like, I don't understand why Franco is so supportive. He's never won a race, but if he continues to do the what he's doing, hope we'll probably keep him.
SPEAKER_03I kind of agree with Flavia. I know. Like, I don't know. You love Franco. He's so delightful. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Not bought in really, but he's like so he kind of I hate to say it like this, but he kind of seems clueless. Kind of like how Carlos is like a little serious like too serious sometimes. Or like Kimmy sometimes is a little bit. Kimmy's just like young and silly. I feel like Franco doesn't have the silliness that Kimmy has, and it makes me laugh.
SPEAKER_03Maybe that benefits Franco to just be like a little not aloof, but a little like but yeah, a little kind of like Carlos.
SPEAKER_01He's like handsome, a little aloof. He says funny things, but I don't know if he's just aloof. I think he kind of is. Really? I think. I think he cares so much.
SPEAKER_03I don't know if Franco like cares that much. And I'm saying that in a good way.
SPEAKER_01I think he cares in a way in our our Argentinian man would care. Yeah. Like it's like in his mind, it's the thing, but really he just wants his mata. I don't know if I ever like hear him outraged on the radio, though. You know what I mean? No, because he's I think he's just wanting his mate. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_03I love it.
SPEAKER_01Anyway, okay, that's uh anything else for silly season?
SPEAKER_03Those are my really think of something and then go on a tangent.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we can have a whole episode about like what we think's gonna happen.
SPEAKER_03We're gonna need something to talk about during actual silly season.
SPEAKER_01Oh, maybe we could do our own silly season like predictions of what's gonna happen. I love it. Okay, great. Perfect, done.
SPEAKER_03Um, merch updates, Pierre Gasly and the driver's club drop. Looks very cool.
SPEAKER_01Is it the best merch drop that we've seen? I don't think so, but it is really cool. It's so cool. I think it's so good. I'm not saying I'm gonna buy any of it. No, it's also probably way out of my big thing. I think we've seen price points, right? I don't know. I didn't look. Oh. I just kind of assumed it was too expensive. But I thought that it was all so good. I also would never buy a shirt that says Pierre on it. No personally, but if you're a Pierre fan, you have to get some. You have to get some.
SPEAKER_03Whoever's I don't mean to be so negative and be like, no, I don't like the like classic looking preppy thing. Like low. Oh no, that's fair. That's fair.
SPEAKER_01I don't know why you like the you don't like the Cadillac either. No. And I love the Cadillac, and I don't even wear preppy things like that. No, I like it. And I kind of do.
SPEAKER_03So that's why I'm like, I don't understand why I don't like it. But I, you know, I like the weird, like bright colored. It's not Lando enough for you. But I like or Danny Rick enough for me, you know?
SPEAKER_01Like my Danny Rick has like some of that kind of thing.
SPEAKER_03Yes, but I don't like like all the new stuff I don't like.
SPEAKER_01Oh, you don't like it, yeah.
SPEAKER_03I like the lucky three. Yeah, I like the lucky three too. Like the we both have the lucky three. Or the Lando, you know, the bright flora. Honey badger brewing. But anyway, that jacket does look really sick. It does look cool.
SPEAKER_01I thought the the hat was cool. It looked like the Pirelli hat, but like Pierce. It was great. Like, I think it's I think it's a great merch shop. Maybe that's a hot take, but like no, I do think it's good. It's just not for me. Might be the best one I've seen. Yes. Um on the subject of best merch shops we've seen. We talked about Ollie's. It sold out. It's like sold out. I didn't even put that on here, but anyway, that was crazy. And then Disney and Silverstone. I was just gonna look doing it.
SPEAKER_03I don't think I I like saw it briefly. Ollie's. No, no, no, the um Disney Silverstone. Oh, yeah. I was just gonna look it up.
SPEAKER_01It's so cute, it's like classic Disney, it's really adorable. That's fun. Very classic Disney to your point.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, um, but yeah, haven't seen anything from Enchanted. I wonder if it'll be in the same vein as like the Barcelona and the Monogram.
SPEAKER_01I kind of hope it's a little different.
SPEAKER_03Me too, but we'll see. Because those look kind of similar, right? I thought so. Same. And again, not bad. Just they looked similar. Yeah, something fresh. Yeah, I would like something fresh.
SPEAKER_01That'd be good.
SPEAKER_03Like, like, we're gonna buy anything. I literally can't buy another singular item of merch.
SPEAKER_01I shouldn't, but who knows what'll happen. That'll trigger me to shop. Who knows? Um the driver's dinner we were talking about, because obviously Max and George have a history of hating each other. And during qualifying or free practice, I can't remember which one, uh, Max flipped off George.
SPEAKER_03And how did I forget about that? Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And so everyone, you know, it was like, oh, here we go. George was just like not doing a fast lap and not getting out of Max's way, and Max was being a dick. So that happened, and then I saw someone did an ed, I think it might have been F1 actually, did an edit of like who was showing up to what they're really? Yeah, it was like what time every driver showed up. I love that when they do it. So good. And the first person that showed up was George, and then Max showed up next, I think, and they were like together alone for like 12 minutes.
unknownThat is honest.
SPEAKER_01And and everyone was like, What did they talk about for 12 minutes? And like what happened? And we were cracking up about it when we were watching the race today. Um, and then we were like, Max and George. I don't remember, Rachel. Did you bring this up or did John bring this up? We're like the same person but different. Oh, John said, same person. Yeah, they have the same personality, but one's English and one's Dutch. And because of the nationality difference and like upbringing, it's just too different for them to get along, but they're too similar. So then Rachel was like, Yeah, they're like the same font. It's like Helvetica, but one is bold and one is italic.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, exactly. Max is bold, Helvetica, and George is italic.
SPEAKER_01And so they can never actually get along, but they like have a rivalry.
SPEAKER_03They're too similar to get along, but at the same time, they should get along because they are the same. Exactly. Like they should understand each other perfectly, but they don't for whatever reason. They're both like sticklers for following the rules and like strategy and regulation, but they just approach it in different ways.
SPEAKER_01Yes, and they're out for you know, themselves. That's it. It is, but then we were talking about like who would you sit with?
SPEAKER_03Oh my god, I have do you can you see the photo in there? Okay, this is funny. A Lando is on the end by Lance, which is just like so funny.
SPEAKER_01And then there's a random, we don't know. I'm sure there's a couple random people. Yeah, and I'm sure these people are not actually random, but they're random. We don't know who they are. They're just not drivers. They're not drivers.
SPEAKER_03The only quote unquote non-driver or random person I recognize is uh Stefano. Yeah, which he's at the head of the table makes sense. So I think we were all we were kind of talking it's Stefano at the very back head of the table. Lewis is on his right side, Carlos is on his left, and then you have George next to Lewis, and Max is next to Carlos. Um, funny because presidents of the drivers association. Of course, they're sitting next to Stefano.
SPEAKER_01Maybe they're talking shop. I don't know. I don't know. I'd like to think that they're all just like, I don't know, chumming it up.
SPEAKER_03But then Ollie is next to Max and Nico is next to George. So we're kind of thinking, like, oh, maybe we'd sit down down there. Like that'd be fun.
SPEAKER_01I think I would sit on across from Ollie and Max and Carlos next to Nico. So in between Nico and random guy.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Because I would like to hear Ollie's goofiness with Max's just like blunt Dutch going on, and then Carlos being president, and then George being president, and then just Nico chilling. Handsome Holkenberg.
SPEAKER_03Yes, Stefan L. Yes, I can.
SPEAKER_01And like Lewis has but Lewis has seniority, so he's gonna sit next to Yeah, and I mean Lewis, I'm sure has longer relationship, maybe with Stefan L.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Where did you say you would sit? I think I sit almost between I think like between Max and Ollie would be fine. Yes. Or I was like, ooh, would be interesting because again, the other end of the table, no one's at the head of the table. Right. Maybe it's the person taking the picture. I can't really tell. Um, but Lando is across from a random guy, and then Alex and Charles, and then Pierre, and of course, Charles and Pierre are besties sitting next to each other.
SPEAKER_01Liam looks like a child, like looks like a child back of Pierre, like lost in a department store, picking his head out of the room. Yeah, he's like, I'm here. Hello.
SPEAKER_03Don't forget about me. Um, and then Lando's on the end across from random guy and Alex, and then Lance is next to Lando, and then it's Esty Bestie, and I'm like, I kind of maybe actually would sit next to like Lance and Lando.
SPEAKER_01Lance and Lando just to see what's going on. I mean, you know, Alex would be funny. He'd be funny to talk to me. Alex could talk to anyone in everyone. Bringing up like random, random stuff with the Charles. Charles just being goofy.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and in the middle of the table, there are some of the randoms that we're talking about that we don't know who they are. They're probably work for the FIA, but of course, like Valtry and um Fernando are like sitting with one of the randoms in the middle of the table. Across from the other randoms.
SPEAKER_01Valtry and Oscar are next to each other, which I also honorary.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that would be so funny.
SPEAKER_03Um, Kimmy and I Isaac are next to each other, too, across from Liam and this lovely lady who is the only woman at the table. Her hair looks great. She kind of looks like Betty Glover, but I don't think it I don't know why it would be her. She's covering the World Cup right now.
SPEAKER_01I was gonna say that would be so interesting. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03They would hopefully talk about it on their podcast. Also, someone did Lando Dirty. His eyes are like half closed in this photo.
SPEAKER_01So I did just notice that Pierre has his Pierre driver's club racing. Oh, does he really? Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Oh, that's funny. Hey, you gotta promote your own merch. Yeah, it's pretty funny.
SPEAKER_01Oh, and also I saw that Kimmy was the last one to show up for this because his team took his shoes. They were doing like pranks.
SPEAKER_03Oh, is that where they tied them? Yes. Oh, I didn't realize that was like before the driver's dinner. I did see that, and he didn't notice that they had tied his shoelace and something like that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and he had to wear his racing shoes to this. Oh my god. Shut up.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god. That's like give me energy. It's like giving me energy. Uh but yeah, anyway, I uh clearly it's like either edge end of the table would be fun or interesting. Yes. I mean, we would who are we hitting? We would sit down. I'd sit anywhere. I'd sit like we would be honored to be passing by this dinner.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'd be like in another corner on a table and just like sitting there awestruck.
SPEAKER_03Um that would be fine too. Oh man. Um, we can touch on this so quick. I just think it's cool. Tatler magazine had uh three F1 Academy drivers on the cover. Alba Larson, who is um in the Ferrari sponsored car, Nina, I don't know how you say Gademan, um, the Alpine sponsored car, and then Rachel Robertson in the Puma sponsored car. They were all styled in Louis Vuitton high jewelry. They look great too. Oh my god, stunning. And they're all in their race suits. Yeah, um, very cool. Haven't read the article, but just thought that was a fun. Yeah, women in motorsport. Um, on the week that Susie is on the armchair expert pod.
SPEAKER_01I finally downloaded her book, so I'm gonna listen to it. I I am not I feel like we talk about this every night. No, I have too many books to read too.
SPEAKER_03You listen to like five books at a time.
SPEAKER_01But now that we're running so much, I'm like, oh, I should have time to knock that out. So that'll report.
SPEAKER_03You need some like other content besides music.
SPEAKER_01Can't just listen to music for like three hours. No. Um, okay, ready to talk. Finally, we're at 45 minutes. Okay.
SPEAKER_03So I was like, well, for sure, be under an hour. No, we it'll be our normal.
SPEAKER_01We will cut out the Rachel hating on all the merch part. Um, but that'll be like at least two minutes shaved off. We don't hate it. We don't hate it. We're doing it for Susan. We're doing for the merch updates in Susan.
SPEAKER_03Mom, that's the merch updates. You know, you don't need to buy me.
SPEAKER_01Rachel just is targeting all the merch, like McLaren blend. She hasn't mentioned the blender. Okay, good.
SPEAKER_00I'll do it for your birthday. Perfect.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so um, really quick, because we did not watch free practice, but there were some like couple things to note. So this was a free practice where the rookies drove an FP1. So quick little rundown of which rookies drove. Dino Berganovich uh for Charlotte Claire. He ended P9. He did really well.
SPEAKER_03That's great, actually.
SPEAKER_01Ayumu Awasa for Liam Lawson ended P15. Paul Aaron for Gabby Bordoletto ended P17, Luke Browning for Carlos Sainz, ended P18.
SPEAKER_03Oh, and he didn't get to do any running last time around. So good for him.
SPEAKER_01Good for him. And then I have I'm gonna screw this up. Roy Rio Hirokawa. Rio Hirokawa for SD Bestie ended P19, and then an American Jack Crawford for Lance Stroll. Yeah. So he ended P20. Um yeah, didn't Amazing, but the quickest in FP1 was Kimmy and Tonelli, and then it was George and then Oscar, and then FP2 was I think when Cadillac started being on fire. But Kimmy was fastest and then Oscar and then Lando.
SPEAKER_03Okay, I just need to pause for one second because I just Googled Jack Crawford. His full name is Carlton Jackson. J-A-K-S-T-O-N Crawford. Wow. And he's from North Carolina. I noticed that just makes sense.
SPEAKER_01I noticed that his name was Jack G sorry, J-A-K. And I was like, interesting. But Carlton.
SPEAKER_03Carlton Jackson.
SPEAKER_01Jackson. Jackson. Okay. Very North Carolinian name. It's like Brindley Brat Brantley Bratley. Yep, because he's probably in that age group. So there we go.
SPEAKER_03Okay, sorry to interrupt.
SPEAKER_01Yes. But yeah, another American. Exciting. Yay. Yay. FP3, the quickest was George Russell, then Kimmy, then Lewis. So that was that was really it for FP3 or FP in general. It was hot. Breaking news. Yeah, it was really hot.
SPEAKER_03It was really hot. It was hot.
SPEAKER_01Qualifying? Yeah, qualifying. Lots to talk about.
SPEAKER_03I don't have much for Q1 or Q2. They just pointed out again that Lando can't have another battery without a penalty. I was like, okay. Thanks for bringing that up. And this was the point last year where Kimmy kind of dropped off a little bit, which I think is pretty clear today that he's still doing obviously decent, but um not as well as he was once doing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he didn't get poll and he didn't win. But he still was on the podium, so he still did fine.
SPEAKER_03But um, and out in Q1, no surprise, two by two by two, signs, Albon, Perez, Bodas, Alonzo, stroll.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and I also made a note Russell switched up his car setup between FP3 and Q1 because there was a lot of like which which now makes sense. Uh, but he was kind of like complaining about a lot of things, and like towards the end of Q3, Toto got on the radio and was like George just drive, which now this all makes sense. Um now this all makes sense, yeah. But Liam ended P4 and Q1. Oh yeah, yeah. So that was Russell, yeah. And then Russell went from P8 to P5. I mean, he was like all over the place. I was like, what is going on with him?
SPEAKER_03Again, now it makes sense, but he was at one point like a half a second behind Antonelli, and people were like freaking out.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. Well, he almost got out because he didn't have a lap time, yeah. And then I was like, oh good lord. So anyway, Q2 um out. Yeah, Gasly, Gabby, Ollie, Nico, Ocon, and Franco.
SPEAKER_03Again, nothing out of the ordinary.
SPEAKER_01No. I mean, this was when George went from like P8 to P4 and Toto smirked.
SPEAKER_03Oh yeah, this was where the George just drive. Yeah, George just drive. Just drive.
SPEAKER_01Just drive. Um, but yeah, I don't really have a time. Uh this was when everyone was kind of like, oh, are they on scrubs or on the on the are they on new tires?
SPEAKER_03was starting to happen because it was just so hot and the tires were just I think was this was the the only real like the talk of the town was like Max didn't go again. Yes, which freaked me out. And Gasly almost took him out.
SPEAKER_01I don't think it actually ended up being No, it wasn't super close, but it was close and everyone else was doing better, so he kept just kind of bopping down.
SPEAKER_03First happen was 0.420 off the lead, and Ghastly was uh 0.46. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And and they were saying that Max probably only wanted to do one lap because they were saving tires, but it didn't seem like they did the soft tires. No, I don't think they used soft tires in the race.
SPEAKER_03Oh wait, but did he use them in Q3? I don't think. Oh, he probably used them in Q3. Is that what they were talking about? I think so.
SPEAKER_01Oh, maybe I totally did not use them in the race because he only did cards and mediums.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Now I'm questioning he could have maybe used them in either way, it worked out for Max.
SPEAKER_01So it's fine. But that was pretty freaking lucky. It was scary. I was screaming. Summer was fully upstairs.
SPEAKER_03So, and keep in mind, I think this was still the point where I said that it wasn't exactly.
SPEAKER_01Yes, so so yes, so then we come to Q3, which is always chaotic. It's like this person's provisional poll, this person's provisional poll. It was like all the normal people, Max, then Lewis, then Charles, and then McLaren. But then McLaren went again, didn't get up there to provisional, so it was kind of like McLaren's out. Then Max comes up. So we have Charles and Provisional Poll, Lewis and Provisional Poll. Not any time.
SPEAKER_03Lando like was maybe going to do it, and it just fell off.
SPEAKER_01He like barely missed it, but it was like okay, and there wasn't enough time for them to go do another lap. So they were like McLaren not doing it, but did okay. Then Max is coming up. About to, he like didn't do great the first sector, second sector got purple, third sector starts it, was like doing great, then crashes out. His rear something happened with his rear wing and like the down force fucked up. It was apparently not anything he did. Yeah, it was something about the car. Yeah, he crashes, and it was a pretty bad crash. This is where chaos ensued because as Ferrari is celebrating their provisional poll, George Russell takes pole position, but they didn't even show it in the coverage. No, it literally his name just like boop snuck up there, and everyone was like, What? Yeah, even the commentators were like, Wait, George Russell? And then there was a yellow flag. Kimmy thought it was a double yellow. Everyone, like, this is where we have the things to talk about because there was a lot of discussion about yellow flag, double yellow flag, George's pole position, but ultimately George did follow the rules. He followed the rules, as George does, because it's George Russell, and he got provisional poll.
SPEAKER_03And I think this is where we can really give George his kudos, is apparently it is really hard to distinguish, especially from like the length where he was at, maybe a single singular yellow flag versus a double waved yellow flag. And he spotted that it was a single double or a single singular yellow flag and lifted off, but then didn't stop entirely because he didn't need to. Whereas Timmy aborted, saw the yellow, lifted, thought because he thought it was a double yellow, lifted, and then just like aborted his lap.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And I they were saying too, it could have been the timing of everything, right? Like George was at the perfect point where they hadn't even gotten to a double yellow yet, which eventually it did become a double yellow, but everyone.
SPEAKER_01Every 22 seconds.
SPEAKER_03Yes. So George had like just enough time, I feel like, to sneak it in. And I think that I saw, I can't remember the time difference, but George with lifting off was still faster in that last sector than like crazy. Yes, yeah.
SPEAKER_01So like the whole controversy is why did it take 22 seconds to make it a double yellow? And George literally had the most perfect timing. Yeah. Because if he had been even, it seems like a second or two, like points of a second or two later, he would have gotten that lap scrapped. Again, which is just insane.
SPEAKER_03A crazy attention to detail and rules on George's end. And again, this is why, like having experience, despite maybe Kimmy having raw pace, I'm like, oh, like that's where that really comes in and can benefit any driver with experience, right? You just know how to handle situations like that.
SPEAKER_01And knowing that there was because I didn't realize because all I kept seeing were all the other like Charles and Lando, like everyone who was like, is Max OK? Once they saw it was a double yellow, I was like, why did they all also think it's a double yellow? But come to find out, it's because it did turn into a double yellow because the Medicar, but as I it was 22 seconds later.
SPEAKER_03And I I think we're I'm still learning, we're still learning like what would constitute a double yellow versus a singular yellow, but I think it's pretty clear if a if a driver has a crash where they're going that fast into a freaking wall, despite it being very far away off the track, like you would still call a double yellow because again, they have to get checked out by the medical car. Like, what if he wasn't okay? I don't know. I just think it's the FIA probably I don't know if they messed up or is this the MBS drama?
SPEAKER_01I should try to find your voice note because it was so funny. Because Rachel was like, I don't really know.
SPEAKER_03Because this was with two minutes left. I think around two minutes left is when this all happened.
SPEAKER_01Okay, this is your this is your voice note. You're like, okay, I have two minutes, seven seconds. Um you're like, I'm going right to bed. Yeah. You're like, I'm going to write to bed. I'll see you in the morning. And then let me make sure my voice volume is turned up.
SPEAKER_02Holy shit, I lied. I lied. I lied. Oh my God.
SPEAKER_03Wait.
SPEAKER_02Okay. You like positive. Well, I had told you Oh my God, and then George. And then Colby, right? Oh, Fred. Fred's on the move. Fred on the move. He's trying to get this overturned. They're trying to get Russell out of here. Colby's a friend.
SPEAKER_00Colby's ups. Colby's like whining. Fred's on the move. I was dying. I was because I because I knew what had happened, obviously. So I was like listening to these like dying.
SPEAKER_03Well, I told you earlier in the day. Again, I worked all day. I but I on my break, I was looking at Instagram, but I I just went straight to my for you page. For some reason, I don't get F1 stuff on my for you page. But I quickly saw a Red Bull and gravel like flying everywhere, but I didn't see who it was. I didn't see if it was like practice.
SPEAKER_01So I was like, Well, and if you had seen that Max was still starting in P5, you wouldn't have initially. Totally wouldn't have even thought anything of it.
SPEAKER_03So, but that's why I was like, oh, okay. Yeah, like it was crazy.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, so the controversy is not necessarily about like George Russell. I don't think I think it's the FIA. No, it's not. It's it's the FIA. They should have called the double yellow.
SPEAKER_03George absolutely did the right thing. He was taking advantage of the situation and being smart about his strategy.
SPEAKER_01Anyone else would have done the same thing. To your point, knowing the difference between like yellow, double yellow, which unfortunately I don't think Kimmy would be able to react quickly enough, not know like with his experience levels. No. Like knowing what George knew, you know. So unfortunately, you know, that didn't benefit him, but George took full advantage and got pulled.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, he did. And so this is where again I'm like again, MPS doesn't have control over the stewards, but at the same time, is this what they're talking about when they're talking about like manipulating? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Well, that was what everyone was saying. It was like, that's why Angie was like texting me. She's like, oh my god, this is like consuming my brain. I'm like, yeah, it's crazy. Like the more like I was like, I cannot wait to talk about on the bottom.
SPEAKER_03No, this is this is this is why we love the sport is stuff like this happening. Like, this is so fun to talk about.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's crazy. It was so exciting.
SPEAKER_03And we haven't even gotten into the race. And the race was was fun. Yeah, yeah. It was fun. I'm gonna ask you, do you prefer a race? Because I I feel like we all know, we've hopefully all watched the race. This race was pretty action-packed in the beginning, really kind of slowed down and tapered off at the end. Yeah. Do you prefer action in the beginning, slow out at the end, or do you prefer action at the end of the race and not as much in the middle or beginning?
SPEAKER_01Great question. I think that I okay, so an exciting first part is exciting. Yes. However, I do hate when it's like so-and-so's card in start, or so-and-so like runs in. I like the action to be actually like the drivers doing their thing. So I don't know if I necessarily want to say like, oh, I'd rather it be the beginning or the end, but I do hate when it's just like freaking Liam Lawson runs into something. Or they're they're crossing the finish line under a virtual safety. Because oh my god, yeah, no, no. So I don't know if that answers your question, but that's one of my thoughts.
SPEAKER_03No, I I think I'm with you in the sense that I think because Barcelona was a little action in the beginning and a little at the end, and that's perfect. In the middle of the race, we kind of forgot about yeah. I feel like that's where I'm at. I do like the action again with qualifying at the end.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, qualifying, and that makes sense because it's like Q3. It's the best of the best area.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you're pushing the limits.
SPEAKER_01Less time. Yeah. Yeah. Because like today, it was the end of the race. Felt like it was going like something was gonna happen, but we just didn't have time for it to happen. And that happens sometimes. Um, but then there's races like you did give out a yelp at the end of the day. I did, I really thought Kimmy was gonna get max. I was like, oh god. But yeah, the race was good. It was very like strategy heavy, which was exciting.
SPEAKER_03Yes, with the heat and the tires. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And there were some, there was like what one virtual safety car? I think Kimmy pitted like right before.
SPEAKER_03Yes. One that was significant. Cause I think there was another one that was like really quick to remove that pipe from the the pipe. Yeah, that's where that was. Yeah, Alex knocked over like a little bit. But that was like super quick. But yes, there was the virtual safety car for signs on lap 25.
SPEAKER_01Oh, you know what? We should probably say what the starting grid top people were. Oh my god, so sorry. We're jumping right in. Yes, read it off. Okay, so we've got George Russell on pole. Then it was Charlotte Claire, Lulu Hammy, Kimmy, Max, Lando, Oscar, Isaac, Liam, and Arvid. Those were the top 10. And then basically the start of the race really wasn't anything crazy. It was like, okay, except for Kimmy. Kimmy! Kimmy kept going off the track and off-roading. I mean, they didn't call anything because he didn't really, he didn't really gain anything.
SPEAKER_03They flagged it, but nothing came of it. Yeah, which I think made sense. And then he gave back a position or two. Yes. I think that's why he didn't get anything, because I think he gave a position back to Charles. Yeah. That he may or may not have gained when he was off-roading.
SPEAKER_01I don't know what was going on with Charles, but Lewis overtook Charles at the beginning, then Max overtook Charles, and then he just it felt like he just kind of gave up. I don't know how else to say it, but at the end of the race, I was just like, why does it feel like Charles always just lets people pass? And Rachel was like, he's not always like that, but it has felt like that. I feel like there's not like a fire in him that there maybe used to be. I don't know why. Maybe he was just so discouraged by not getting poll that he was just like, what is happening? I don't know. I'm thinking way too far into this, obviously.
SPEAKER_03But no, I feel like he used to be. I think there is a lot of hype around him, and I'm not saying it's not warranted. I just I think we love Charles. We love Charles, we think he's talented.
SPEAKER_01But I get I think like, I don't know, like I feel like George has like an anger or spark to him. You could tell during like the end of qualifying in this race that George was like in it to win it.
SPEAKER_03And I shouldn't say that Charles doesn't have an anger.
SPEAKER_01He gave up. Yeah. Because he was like, Do I even would I even benefit or lose if I pitted and switched tires? And his engineers were like, No, it doesn't matter.
SPEAKER_03And they end up pitting him. Yeah. Which again, Kimmy almost over. Oh no, that was Max.
SPEAKER_01No, Max, yeah. Um, and then oh, poor Cadillac. They were both out by lap three. Oh, it was so bad.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Valtry's brakes were literally like really on fire. The smoke from the fire extinguishers. Oh, yeah. Whatever was that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, lap three, Valkyrie was out, and then lap five, Cheko was out. And that was really sad.
SPEAKER_03And then randomly, like Liam said his brakes were on fire on lap four, and then on lap five, he's like, I'm still on fire, but they weren't. Like, I don't know if they put it out remotely.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I just like what happened. Maybe it was just that hot.
SPEAKER_03It could have been just that hot that he thought they were.
SPEAKER_01I really think Ferrari screwed up their strategy and lost the race for Lewis and Charles because Lulu pitted really early. He was like one of the first people to pit, and they just never caught back up.
SPEAKER_03No, uh, no, and that um was it the was it Max and Lewis that they were battling?
SPEAKER_01Yes, and it was actually really exciting to see. So Lewis pitted really early, then was down in P11, zoomed back up to where Max was. Yep, and then they battled, and that was incredible. Like, loved that.
SPEAKER_03I I saw people not liking the zone drone shots.
SPEAKER_01We like that was it was so fun to watch the battles on the drone. Every time a drone came by, we were like, drone! And then the drone started showing nothing, and we were like, okay, we need something to happen. We were like, where's our agent of chaos? Where's our agent of chaos? Which chaos while Schroll did not finish the race, he was not our agent of chaos today.
SPEAKER_03No, no, unfortunately, we were really hoping he would have pulled a pulled a something.
SPEAKER_01That's all we have him for.
SPEAKER_03Um oh, the one thing that was kind of around it must have been after Perez um DNF'd and then before the first like Lulu Max battle that was crazy. Um, Lando on the timing like dropped randomly like three spots, and we're like, oh my god. And then nothing happened.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we thought we thought Lando, you know, something happened, God forbid. Someone has got to get their stuff together when it comes to that thing because this is like happens every race. It seemed so much better this time, too, and it might have just been we were excited about the we just really loved the drone shot.
SPEAKER_03But yeah, then at the end of the race, don't you remember that they showed that guy? They showed that guy in with the overtake. I can't remember who it was. Liam or Isaac. I think it was like Lewis overtaking Charles, maybe, but we missed the overtake because it was a guy, like a mystic shot of the guy's head with his hat on.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, it was bad. And then they kept showing those like ground shots, which we were laughing about, how some like artsy like filmographer was doing that, but like from a racing perspective.
SPEAKER_03Where their wheels just like drive over it.
SPEAKER_01From a racing perspective, we were like, please stop. We do not want that. No, please, yeah. No, there was like the pitting was exciting. The the piss offs were pretty fast, they were pretty fast.
SPEAKER_03I think most things were like under like 3.3 or something like that. And then, oh, okay, you kind of talked about this earlier, but Kimmy, we were Kimmy pitted, and then there were like Kimmy was on his way to pit, but at the same time a yellow flag got called. Yeah. And we're like, did he know about that yellow flag? And the answer was no. He pitted like right before the yellow flag. He got George. Yeah. He got George because that was before on lap 25 the virtual safety car for signs. I'm not really sure. It seems like they said it was an engine issue and that there was like some oil on the track.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, something about oil, which we were like, oh god, here comes the chaos. Nothing happened.
SPEAKER_03No, but then we were like, oh, Carlos is Carlos is Carlos is leaving Williams. Carlos is leaving Williams.
SPEAKER_01This is stay tuned for our silly season episode because we got a lot of thoughts. We're gonna have to really start that doc now. I know, honestly. Um, okay, I don't have a lot because then it got kind of boring. Then at the end, it was like people were pitting, the usual suspects for P1 were switching. So it's like Max, George, um, was Ferrari up there at one point. Kimmy was up there at one point, but then essentially the last like 11 laps, George was in P1, Max was in P2, and Kimmy was in P3. And Kimmy and Max were coming for George. George was like, I don't know what five seconds ahead most of the time. And then they kind of got it down to like three, and then it was like the last two laps, Max was like 2.3, 2.5 seconds behind George, but just couldn't catch him. And that's when I yelped because I thought Kimmy was gonna get him. Gonna overtake him. Yeah. Yeah. So George ended up up winning.
SPEAKER_03Um I that one other well, McLaren again kind of had some weird things happening. Yes, they did. Charles like was trying to pass Piastri or Piastri was passing Charles. Yeah. And then Charles like kind of touched or grazed like Piastri's wheel. I'm like, this is where I'm like, I think Charles is like unfortunately the slight. He didn't truly agent of chaos today, but like he was he's our agent this year. I think he kind of is our number one agent, like 007. Like number one agent of chaos.
SPEAKER_01On Sundays we 2026 Agent of Chaos. It's not an award you probably want. No, but you're gonna But it is prestigious, and you can change. I mean, this could change. We're still, you know, in the you know, Scroll is kind of in the running as well. Yeah, Liam Liam we thought was going to be or Isaac, but no, no, they're actually doing pretty good this year. The other funny thing that I liked seeing was when I think it was Kimmy both of the McLaren were on either side of him and like w like was trying to pass them and then Kimmy like it was just like good racing. Like Kimmy zoomed by and like the two McLaren were on the side and then they went to like a turn. It was oh one of the yes it was just good it was something I remember and was like excited about anyway.
SPEAKER_03It's just fun when there's like almost action three yeah car lengths like or not three car lengths three cars.
SPEAKER_01But I thought I thought this track was pretty exciting overall like it was hard you could tell the gravel was like chaotic but it was short and like you could tell was a difficult track to drive uh yeah no again like overall a really good race like can't say we weren't entertaining it wasn't Monaco or Barcelona but it was it was good it was still really good.
SPEAKER_03It was good it was still really great. Um I think there were I mean I think overall we've touched on all the I was gonna say do you have any other big things? No I think we've really hit on everything.
SPEAKER_01There was like the weird like Lando and Franco like pit stop situation but nothing ever came up never really yeah and that was and I don't know whose fault that was because they they said incident to Lando but then it looked like it was Franco coming in and not paying attention so I don't I don't know what that was. Yeah McLaren had some weird pits too because they like kept off they kept Lando out yeah then like immediately pitted him and then I don't know it felt like McLaren and Ferrari kind of got like screwed over with some of their pit situation. Where's the east and Red Bull were pretty on it were on it.
SPEAKER_03There was at one point they were like okay Lando like we want you to push and he's like I I'm doing it. Like I can't push any tired and then he boxed like pretty shortly after that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah um the only other thing I have is the celebratory piece of the race. George came with the hits like I was thrilled we were like oh we were dying he yabba dab a dude he wooed wooed yabba dab a dude I didn't hear any dad jokes but I do feel like maybe there are some that we didn't hear there's well there was something about him being thirsty someone's gonna make that into some sort of editing got up and poured himself it was like not even 10 a.m he poured himself a whiskey and was like a little taste for what did he say? He said something funny I don't know it's like a little taste for George's victory and then he handed it to me and said a little sip for Max's podium. Yeah but worthy then he pulls up and we were like will he do the tea post yeah we were like yes or no yes or no I said yes and everyone else said no we said I said no but I wanted him to and lo and behold we squealed so hard because you did it you guys did it it was iconic it was what we all needed it was what he needed this is what George needed and again this is why we love George and also maybe people hate him it's the cringy moments but he knows how to play into it. It is so cringe and I love it. No it's great George don't ever change no everyone is like oh George Russell is so uh George Russell but I love that about him that's why we call him the Duchess is George Russell a millennial no he's he's I think he's too young.
SPEAKER_03Let's see he's not a millennial he's part of Gen Z. Which makes sense but to me I feel like sometimes he gives I I say this in the best way I think sometimes he gives the same energy that maybe Taylor Swift does but for millennials you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_01Actually though are they the equivalent like equivalents of one another is Taylor Swift the George Russell of the music industry? I think so. George Russell may okay wait hear me out. If George Russell wins the World Drivers Championship is that like Taylor Swift's Eras tour because you know how some people were like not into Taylor and then she eras toward and like won everyone over yeah maybe this is George's year.
SPEAKER_03The 2026 season is George's George's Eras tour I don't know maybe that's a hot take.
SPEAKER_01We'll see George comes I guess like T-Poe's era he's like playing all the hits he's you know seeing all the hits yes we got there yes yes yes yes yes yes love it oh my god but yeah the T-Po's was great that was uh probably my favorite part of the day I think we talk final order I don't know if we went over that I think we should we just we're so excited about the T-Po's yeah um we have Georgie boy number one for Stappen number two Antonelli third Piastri fourth Hamilton fifth Hedger in sixth shout out um Lando in seventh Leclerc in eighth wow he really dropped off yeah um Lawson in ninth and Lindblad in 10th yeah yeah rounding out the top 10 love it honestly again I'm like racing bowls they're always nine and ten or like 10 and 11 yeah they're firmly a midfield team firmly midfield we'll get into our formula run club but before that do you want to talk Silverstone quick? Yes okay and then when I say quick I mean quick because man we are yapping one hour 13 minutes. Oh we're fine we can wrap this up before an hour too we can wrap this up we got it okay so Silverstone is the I'm actually really excited about this race. It's about to hit a record this year that has not been set since 1995 the biggest F1 race with 5700 attendees that's crazy I I see that that's more than half a million people that's wild that it when you put it in that perspective that's crazy. That's a lot of I've always wanted to go I want to be in the Lando stand obviously I want to go I want to do the run they do have that run they let you run around the track taking Formula One club to the track exactly would obviously love that that would be so fun on the 4th of July we let us run. Yes um okay it was first held it's the oldest race on the counter so it was first held by the Royal Automotive club in 1926. So this race and then the Italian Grand Prix are the only two F1 World Championship Grand Prix that have been staged during every season that the World Drivers Championship has been held.
SPEAKER_03Okay so Italian is Monza.
SPEAKER_01I have to remind myself that Monza yeah so so Silverstone and Monza only two that have always been on the season. And then there's a couple iconic moments so Ferrari's first ever win was here in 1951. Nigel Manzel's legendary charge to victory was in 1987 and this that was uh apparently all the fans stormed the track which I am not familiar with this moment other than like looking at this. So this was like fun little things to see Michael Schumacher broke his leg here in 1999. Oh god a protester famously ran onto the circuit during the 2003 race that's fun oh god that's so dangerous I know isn't that scary I mean I'm sure that's part of the point but horrifying okay Lulu Hami owns the record at Silverstone so he has had nine victories he um his 2024 win was his 104th career victory and his final home win for Mercedes. So we'll see what happens next weekend. 2020 Hamilton won and crossed the finish line with a punctured front tire.
SPEAKER_03This had to be on an episode of Drive to survive and yet I don't remember it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah no uh 2021 Hamilton and Max collided at cops say cops corner just cops it's just cops here we go cops cops cops corner and one of the and one of the defining moments of their championship battle in 2021 uh which that year Hamilton won right or was that a max year 2020 that was a max that was a was that that was that's the year that's the year that was the max year that that was the yeah okay 2022 uh Joe Gnu survived a terrifying opening lap rollover crash I remember that but I don't either um shout out to Joe yeah and then Carlos earned his maiden F1 victory that same race so those are driving for a Ferrari at that time must have been um I just or was he McLaren uh he must have uh Ferrari Ferrari Ferrari great and then in 2025 Lando Norris claimed his first ever home victory exciting and it was McLaren's first silver stone win since 2008 which is crazy. That's a long time yeah so those are some little notable things and then the results from last year's race Lando was P1 Oscar was P2 oh yeah this was Nico Holkenberg this was the race he got the podium yes so maybe I love I want a random on the podium this is what we want to see this is what we are asking for today this is what we want okay so then was Nico then Lewis then Max then Pierre who got P6 Lance bro got P7 I didn't even see that I am shocked holy oh my god Aston Martin okay Lance got p7 this is real time reactions here Alex got p8 Fernando got p9 Jordan Jordan P10 dang I think Kimmy DNF'd Ollie Behrman P11 Carlos was P12 Estee Bestie P13 Charles Leclerc P14 Yuki was 15 and then DNF we have Kimmy Isaac Gabby William and Franco this was like all the rookies because I think it was raining oh I think it was um I think that's why Nico was up high let's see yes it was wet conditions played a massive role in the 2025 Silverstone circuit so that's why all the rookies were out and Nico was up on the podium Nico on the podium so maybe that was a good that was that's why I was like I'm so excited for you to watch Silverstone last year was so good with Lando's wins Nico on the podium oh that's so fun yeah so yeah we'll see what happens so yeah that's that's my little do you have any thoughts from Silverstone having watched any of them no I I I mean I do I I like it because I the drivers I think really like it yeah it just seems like good energy and it's a lot of their home race so I think there draws a lot of fans um yeah you kind of don't know what conditions you're gonna get yeah it's usually on our 4th of July weekend so it just feels like red white and blue waiting yeah like very I guess it's like kind of funny because it's the independence yeah yeah probably like of like it's perfect yeah it's perfect it's in all the lines so patriotic so patriotic um I love it but yeah I just yeah really excited lots of good times at Silverstone um okay so Formula Run Club okay Lydia shout out to Lydia she had Liam Lawson locked in P9. He ended P9 we thought with the fire that she was gonna run a lot I was like Lydia's gonna have to she's gonna be working on this forever but she's good she even told me she's gonna still run a mile just in honor of Formula Run I love it. So great please and then Rachel Max Verstappen which was so hard of a pick but you did well he and I'll take it you picked P4 he ended P2 so you got two miles. Two miles great and you'll knock those out like literally today literally today and then I picked Arvid for P9 he ended P10 so one mile. Yay easy peasy um and needless to say we both ran our mileage we did for we've we had we talked about that we talked about so we're good yeah we're good we're good um so now we need to draw for Silverstone do you want to go first do you want me to uh you can go first okay I feel like it always picks the same drivers it really does George Russell okay George Russell Oh Lewis Haley Whoa two British drivers okay this is appropriate thanks another wheel generators um okay okay so what George Russell he won today he won today he did not do great last year 10th um I'm gonna say oh what am I gonna say I think I'm gonna say P3 Okay P3 I love that I'm writing that down for you what are you gonna say I don't know I think I was also gonna say P3.
SPEAKER_03It worked out well for me and Lydia last week I know it did well because he was four Lewis was fourth today or last year I'm sorry fourth last year and then fifth today he obviously won in Barcelona I'm talking out loud his neck is fixed presumably okay I might do should I I'll do second I'm gonna do P2.
SPEAKER_01Nice locking in P2 P2 home grand prix who do you think's gonna win next week I don't know we didn't survey any of our family members no we didn't I mean John's gonna say George yeah we didn't survey any of our family members unless I got a text from someone I really don't know I'm I'm gonna say I'm I might also say George I kind of want an all British podium again I feel like I kind of want McLaren to win I would love you know I would love Lando to win I would just put that energy out there with Lando's chaotic energy I would really like to see a like win from him not just a pony but like a chain I see I want more chaotic Lando content more vegan shirts more big balls I would like a Lando win I also want Max to be peaceful maybe it's like Lando to your point winning in like a strategic yet chaotic way I love a strategic yet like a rogue a rogue incident yeah like McLaren triggers a really brilliant strategy. Can you please get your shit together I don't want a McLaren one too and I don't necessarily care about an all British podium I do want Max to continue to squeak up and he needs to get out of goddamn P7 and the driver's champion oh we didn't talk about that driver's championship standings the change is basically that George is back to P2 so it's Kimmy George then Lewis and it's a 40 point difference yeah so I think closer if Kimmy if George keeps outperforming Kimmy I think there's the hope hope is alive. Yeah hope's alive I don't I don't think I don't know if he's necessarily like squeaking by like he was but anyway okay um yeah I think that's it yeah that's it we talked a lot we had a lot to talk about I'm never gonna say that we're gonna be under an hour ever again because I know if we did something would be major I like longer podcasts I don't know about the rest of y'all that are listening but I mean we have people listening please like comment subscribe rate review yeah we appreciate it we any feedback you have yeah what do you want to hear more about what are you liking yeah please message us on Instagram we like chatting we like hearing especially when you're you know international we love hearing what your favorite teams are we love other perspectives we try to stay I mean we do like who we like but you know sometimes it's nice to be objective we can evolve yeah sure sure if you're a strollie specifically please reach out okay again please tell us tell us everything I genuinely are just so curious we'll not berate or we're we're here we want to listen we want to listen we want we want to know yeah we want to understand um okay well we will see you on Sunday
