The wait is officially over. We break down the first game of the NFL season, hit the latest news, fire off some takes, and make our picks for the rest of week 1 slate. Football is finally back.
Welcome in. We're not experts. Episode 41. We are live from the cave once again. Live from the cave. We got a lot to get into today, so we're going to kind of push some things here. We're going to jump straight into the recap of last night's game. Buddy, it was a brutal one. It wasn't a great watch. We were right.
SPEAKER_00It was injury riddled. We were kind of spot on with how the game script would be. The under, absolutely smacked.
SPEAKER_04I hope whoever did listen, they went and bet the under.
SPEAKER_00We got hooked on Seattle three and a half. We'll take that.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Some places like DraftKings, like Raleigh, would have pushed.
SPEAKER_04Yep. But the moneyline smacked, which is what we both bet. We put it in a parlay.
SPEAKER_00We had a great ticket. Oh my God. We were robbed yesterday by Romeo injury.
SPEAKER_04Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo?
SPEAKER_00Romeo Dobbs. He owes me money. Romeo Dobbs, if you are hearing this, which I know you're not, you owe me $25. Actually, actually, you owe me $480. He was bad. He wasn't the only one on that Patriots. Well, they asked Romeo Dobbs about his performance last night, and his response was. He said that he just wasn't locked in on the ball. Now, you are an NFL player whose job is literally to catch the ball.
SPEAKER_04I mean, you got paid to catch the ball.
SPEAKER_00Look, I'll say this. They better hope AJ Brown doesn't miss no time because thank God for AJ Brown. Because could you imagine watching that game as a Pats fan and being like, that could have been our Romeo, that could have been our wide receiver one.
SPEAKER_04Man. Yeah, let's just get it straight into the injuries before we dive into everything else. The Seahawks win the game 13-10. Like I said, it was a it wasn't a great game by any means. The crowd was electric. You lose Sam Darnold five snaps into the game. Horrible. Over here thinking that JSN's dead.
SPEAKER_00Turns out it was always Drew Locke.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And look, if you're a backup quarterback, one takeaway from the game that I have, if you're a backup quarterback that plays and you have a guy that we would call a horse.
SPEAKER_04You just get him the ball. Yeah. It's pretty simple.
SPEAKER_00Let him make something happen. That fourth, fourth and was it, fourth and one when they threw that little curl route or whatever? Little maybe it was like a slant that turned out. And he took it to the crowd. Whatever, and then yeah. Bro, the acceleration on him to score that was insane. Like I saw a steal of it earlier today.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, a lot of people.
SPEAKER_00And it was like, how did he not get tackled?
SPEAKER_04A lot of people are saying that he's QB proof. I don't necessarily believe that's true. I saw Justin Jefferson. I saw Justin Jefferson get nerfed by JJ McCarthy.
SPEAKER_00Drew, Drew. Well, Drew Locke's not a QB three. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And then not only did Sam Darnold go down last night, which sucks, and we don't exactly know what it is. We know that he won't be there week two. They said that he avoided a hip fracture. Which is great news. That's pretty much all the news that's come out so far. Yeah, like the news has been pretty good. It's just they don't know how long he's gonna miss. The other injury, major injury, is I think it was the third quarter. AJ Brown goes down with the ankle sprain, high ankle sprain.
SPEAKER_00And at that moment, the game shifted.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I it's huge for New England, obviously, to lose AJ Brown like that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because depending on the severity, let's just say he misses a month, maybe. Hopefully for them, it's only like two weeks. Week or two.
SPEAKER_04I think a month's probably like worst-case scenario.
SPEAKER_00But if he if he's out a month, then that offense is gonna have some serious question marks.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Ramondre Stevenson was pr pr. So I'm gonna just lay out his in all of his numbers.
SPEAKER_00If you're just a fantasy guy, you would look at this and say, oh, Ramondre Stevenson had a good game.
SPEAKER_04He well look, I have Ramondre Stevenson in the league, and I was happy that he gave me the points that he gave me. 13 or 14, whatever it was. So Ramondre Stevenson in week one. He had 85% of snaps, 18 of 24 running back carries, he had 27 routes, six targets, five catches, led pats in routes, second in targets, and he had 95 total yards. 51 of those were Russian. His Russian metrics were awful. Awful. It was like 2.8 yards per carry. Let's see, what else was it? He had 51 yards, he had one yard before contact.
SPEAKER_00That's terrible.
SPEAKER_04He had 50 yards after contact. So you're like, oh, the offensive line isn't great. Buddy. It I don't even know if it matters. It's just like At least he didn't vote. Listen to this. This is a crazy statistic. Like the percentage of runs with eight defenders in the box. Jadarian Price faced 40%. Ramondre Stevenson faced 16.7.
SPEAKER_00Dude, I think that that oh that O-line looked bad.
SPEAKER_04The rush yards over expected. Jadarian Price had plus seven. Ramondre Stevenson had negative 22. That's a real statistic.
SPEAKER_00That's bad. But but that's I feel like that shows more that it's on the offensive line than it is Ramondre Stevenson.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I don't know how to interpret that stat, honestly.
SPEAKER_04One part of it is like with the eight defenders in the box, so they weren't stacking the box. Right, yeah. Well that's the easy one. So yes, like you could be like, you could look at it and be like, the O-line's not great. I would also say that. The other thing you can say is Ramondre Stevenson's also not great. And when Trevion Henderson comes back, he's gonna be He did average five yards of carry last year. He's gonna be a major, he's gonna be a major factor. And then the second thing that you can say is that Seattle's defense is just this good. And I believe that to be the case, too. I think that their defense is just this good. And it's you know that Sam Darnold's already been ruled out for week two, and they they play the Cardinals. So I mean it's like if the defense looks like that all year and missing a safety in a corner, and it didn't matter at all. Yeah. I it I you said this before we started, but it's like when Sam Darnold went out.

SPEAKER_00Oh my god, it was shh they it like when I look at that game, like talking about the offensive line, it's like you talk about Ramondre Stevenson's stat, like back to the expected yards per carry. Is that saying like with the offensive line's performance? No, it means that he was expected to get this yards, or is it just based on like yard like touches, etc. etc. etc. Because if it's taking into account the offensive line performance, then I would say Ramondre Stevenson just might be horrible. But if we're saying that it's based off of like touches and expected, like you know, average yards per carry or something like that, then the offensive line was dog shit, which I mean Drake May was getting pressure lot. Yeah, pretty good amount. But I mean, AJ Brown got hurt and they couldn't do shit.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it was over. There was no more moving the ball like that.
SPEAKER_00And it goes to show, like, the fact that Ramondre Stevenson led your team in routes is crazy.
SPEAKER_04Nuts. What a crazy statistic. I don't know if that's on accident. Yeah, I don't know. Like, what there was a point in the second, it was almost the end of the second quarter. Romeo Dobbs had only played two of 11 snaps and 11 personnel.
SPEAKER_00Why, and that's your wide receiver too. You just paid him what four years, 64 million dollars.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, like 39 games and 46.
SPEAKER_00And then you give him like no work, essentially. And then by the time you start giving him work, you know, it's a critical, was it third down? Is that a third down when he's wide open? Drops drop the ball.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, he had zero catches.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_04On like three or four.
SPEAKER_00You know, I don't want to sit here and say that I'm gonna overreact to week one because that's like an easy thing to do. Right. But I did say going into this game that I felt like the Patriots were gonna have a slow start to their season.

SPEAKER_00Obviously, we didn't expect Sam Donald to get hurt, and that changed. I will comfortably say this had Sam Darnold not gotten hurt, everything that we predicted, dig how the game would have was gonna go would have been perfect. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I mean, we predicted it being an ugly offensive game. They probably beat them double digits. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I mean Drew Locke. Drew Locke played alright, though.
SPEAKER_03He played he was extremely circular.
SPEAKER_00But but the but the the game plan's different, obviously. Right. Like it changes like what you can do going.
SPEAKER_04It's a guy that's completed 60% of his passes in his career. I mean, we're not talking about a guy that's gonna come out here and dice you up.
SPEAKER_00But I mean, he he played well. Shout out to Drew Locke. I mean, his numbers are skewed because he did have one like 50-yard touchdown pass.
SPEAKER_04Shout out to JSN.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, JSN looks like he's picking up right where he left off. Uh I my early early assessment shows I was immediately wrong on my take that he was gonna drop down. Yeah, he comes up and put up what did he put up last night?
SPEAKER_04Like a buck 20? Buck 20. I think it was 122 and he got 10 catches, something like that. Or nine or eight, something like that. I think it might have been eight. I think he may have had eight receptions. Let's I'm gonna go over the usage.
SPEAKER_00He had eight catches, 122 yards, and a tud.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. I wanna I'm gonna go over the usage for the Seahawks running backs because I think this is the interesting last note that I'll say, so Jadarian Price played 50% of snaps. George Helani played 44% of snaps. Price had 10 carries, 11 routes, two targets, and 58 total yards. Halani had eight carries, seven routes, one target, 29 total yards. Jadarian Price looks like he has the juice.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_04He looked good. He looked good. The the opportunities that he did get, he looks explosive. He looks like he can be the guy. Here's the problem. And I knew this was going to be the case. Because they did it last year. Kenneth Walker's a good running back.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_04We I think we both know this. Yeah. And you just nerf him. You had Zach Charbonnet. Why not nerf him? They did the same thing. They did the same thing with George Helani. Like we had Jadarian Price, let's nerf him.
SPEAKER_00Well, look, I mean, just based off of what I saw last year, there's evidence that that works because I mean, look what Kenneth Walker did in the playoffs. That's true. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Kept him fresh. I mean, yeah, no, that's a that's a fair argument. I I don't love it. I I like Price a lot. Yeah. But I'm I'm I'm higher on him now than I I was coming in the draft. I didn't love the backup running back and all this. But then you go in the first round. No, I just think I think that he passed the eye test. It is funny because in a league, in a league, I have Ramondre Stevenson, and I it's my brother, me and my brother are the co-managers together, and I I told him last night, I said, look, we should probably take Zay Flowers and try and trade for somebody. Because I don't think this Ramondre thing lasts.
SPEAKER_00They need Trevion Henderson bad. Like that game last night, like I feel like Trevion Henderson comes back and he should immediately be Bell Cow.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I would agree with that. They could have used him last night. There was like zero explosiveness to anything Ramondre did.
SPEAKER_00I'm just surprised he didn't fumble.
SPEAKER_04He did, it was just out of bounds.

SPEAKER_04That is uh, yeah. I mean, that's pretty much the recap of the game. If you watched it, I mean it was good to get football back. It was, man.
SPEAKER_00It was just a man, I was just thinking that it was supposed to be. I was hoping it was going to be more exciting than what we had. Which I mean, it did turn out to be a great game. Like, well, before we move on, let's just Drake May in the fourth quarter.
SPEAKER_04I'm glad you brought it up.
SPEAKER_00What fucking happened to him?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, he fell apart.
SPEAKER_00All of those, all of those three interceptions in the fourth quarter, like, he lost in the game 100% as far as I'm concerned.
SPEAKER_04They were all three unforced.
SPEAKER_00Like, one, he what was it the the first pick that he threw that got batted? That was to Dobbs, right?
SPEAKER_04That was the second one. Was the first one? Yeah, but that that pass, first off.
SPEAKER_00No, the first one was the tipped one, and then the second one was over the middle, and then the third one was in the end of the room.
SPEAKER_04Okay, yeah, right, right, right. That pass to Romeo Dobbs. One was late. It was horrible. He threw then he threw a balloon. Yeah, he threw a knee ball.
SPEAKER_00Somehow that ended up as a as a jump ball. And this is somebody that I was told had a rocket.
SPEAKER_04And then, yeah, the one across the middle.
SPEAKER_00It looked like 2015 Pay Manning threw that ball.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. And then you had the one across the middle. Not great. Bad decision. And then the most egregious one was the one that ended the game.
SPEAKER_00The fact that he threw that ball. Like, you can't, like, he threw that ball. First off, it was a first off, it was a subway sandwich.

SPEAKER_01My man faded away and threw the game ball. Who does he think he is?
SPEAKER_00They like they he threw that ball as if it was fourth and fourth and 24, and they were down five and had to have a touchdown and couldn't kick the field goal. Like they the play called, or not the play call, I'm not gonna put that on that. The the decision by Drake made to like throw that ball in that situation was terrible. You the ties in your hands, you just can't lose the game in that situation. After you just completed a converted, like that huge fourth down.
SPEAKER_04You can't do that. You cannot do that. It's like it's Mike Vrabel, man. It's like QB 101.
SPEAKER_00Mike Vrabel shit.
SPEAKER_04Just manage the game if they're gonna be.
SPEAKER_00It just seems like little things like this happen. How many times did shit like that happen with the Tennessee Titans when Mike Vrabel was the head coach?

Sam Darnold, we already talked about, avoided major injury. We kind of hit on AJ Brown missing a week or miss gonna miss a few weeks. Looks like a high ankle sprain there. Josh Jacobs got a win today, potentially.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. I mean, nothing says nothing says I accept responsibility, like pleading no contest.
SPEAKER_00That's right. It's just a you know, shout out Josh Jacobs and his team for being smart, like, hey, let's move this up, let's get this resolved, whatever. Like, I'm Josh Jacobs, I'm not going to jail. I'm also still rich. Let me just get back to football.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. I um Yeah, that'll be interesting. He's still on the commissioner's exempt list, so he obviously still can't play.
SPEAKER_00But I feel like I almost expect like a like a their his like official suspension to be announced.

SPEAKER_00I'm gonna go out on a limb and say he probably still gets six games, even though the charges were lessened just because it's still DV. Yeah, it's just they just changed the name to battery. I doubt that they split hairs on it. Yeah. I mean, I guess, you know, four would be cool, I guess. He's got to get some kind of suspension, right?

SPEAKER_04You're a winner. Congratulations. Here's some other news that got a little bit more ridiculous the more we got into it. Brock Bowers had his meniscus trimmed yesterday. Yes, that's right. You heard me. Yesterday.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, his meniscus got a haircut.
SPEAKER_04And you know, it's funny because before that was reported, Clint Kubiak was asked if Brock Bowers was gonna play on Sunday.
SPEAKER_00He said him and Max Crosby were both gonna play.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that they were scheduled to play on Sunday. That's funny because then a couple hours later, you get a report that says that he has his meniscus trimmed and he's gonna miss a game or two. Check this out. So, one thing, they apparently knew about this last week that this happened, that this injury was sustained, and they waited until the start of the NFL season to do anything about it. That's crazy. Right? Like that's crazy. Like that's an absolutely crazy thing to do. Yeah. Is to sit over here and wait a week with your best player. Two, I don't understand why. I don't understand why he would go into a press conference. The so this is what's weird to me, is the NFL is sponsored by all these betting apps.

FanDuel, DraftKings, like they have all these betting apps, but then you have your coach over here manipulating things, telling me that he's good to play on Sunday, but then they knew about this injury a week ago. And there was people just sitting on this report. And didn't it? And if they went and bet, say the under, because you know, they're saying he's gonna miss a game or two, that's Brock Bowers camp saying that. Right. Everything that I've read said that this could be four to six weeks. Look, and I can tell you one thing, that's not a game or two.

This is also a lie, and it's also hilarious. I don't know. Kind of gives me some excitement. Garrett Wilson says that the playoffs are very realistic for the New York Jets in 2026. I've seen this. I it just sounds like it starts on Sunday. It sounds to me like one, Garrett Wilson's gonna have a good year in fantasy, and two, my Jets to the Super Bowl conspiracy still has some life.
SPEAKER_04I uh yeah. Look, it starts on Sunday. If they can't beat the Titans, I don't see them making the playoffs. So I don't see them beating the Titans. So Yeah, well then maybe the playoffs is a stretch. But I don't know. Who knows? It's Geno Smith. You never know. He could bring them to an eight-nine win season, maybe. I don't see that happening. And we say Pat Mahomes, and it's because he's won three Super Bowls, even though he's looked bad. Like at this point, now you're two years removed for a Super Bowl, especially if you take into consideration that like a Josh or a Lamar wins a Super Bowl this year, then you can't make that claim at all. Because the only thing that you've had against Burrow and Lamar and Josh is the fact that you have these Super Bowl rings. At this point, we have four years of saying, hey, statistically speaking, you haven't been that guy. You've been more of a middle-of-the-pack quarterback. We'll still give you the bump because you've won Super Bowls, but you're not the face of the league anymore. I'm saying he's not the face of the league anymore as quarterback.
SPEAKER_04I would almost say Josh Allen.
SPEAKER_00I mean, yeah, he's probably he probably is at this point. But I'm saying, like, as the standard of quarterback. I don't want it, there won't be any more. Is he going to be the greatest quarterback of all time?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I could agree with that.
SPEAKER_00If he doesn't return, though. And I'm not saying they got to win the Super Bowl. I'm just saying I need this offense to be a top five offense.
SPEAKER_04You want to see 5,000 again.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I want to see Pat come out here and drop 4,500, 3540 TDs. Like I'm tired of seeing this offense get to the 30-yard line and kicking a field goal four times a game. And then you get one touchdown, and all of a sudden the Chiefs are one of the best teams in the league. I want to see Pat be Pat.
