Synopsis
J Staff opens Men's Health Month from the road — still in Austin, off the couch and around a domino table, tiles clicking under the whole conversation. He, Joe From Work, and He's Jared kick the episode off with a quick montage of what's coming, then settle in and pick the men's-health talk right back up where Episode 20 left it. The thesis is quiet but it runs the whole table — taking care of yourself, body and mind, isn't a program you start. It's a thing you keep showing up for, preferably with your brothers in the room.
The hardest truth lands as a number. Regular exercise among men 35 to 44 has dropped nearly 40% in a decade, and the uncs name the usual alibi out loud: career, family, kids. Then one of them turns the mirror on himself. "A lot of times I lie and say I don't have time. But no — you did not make time. Trust me, I don't have time for half the stuff I do." It isn't a lecture. It's a grown man catching his own excuse in the act — and admitting the hours quietly go to the scroll.
The reframe is mercifully practical. At 40 the goal shifts from looks to longevity — you're not chasing a bulk, you're training to live — and it takes less than you fear: a little zone-two walking, fifteen honest minutes of weights, food that actually fuels the work. Then the table drifts somewhere tender, to The Giver — the book about a boy chosen to hold a whole community's memory of pain so nobody else has to feel it. One man carries all of it so the rest can live easy, and he turns out to be the only one who can still feel anything at all. In a room full of men, the metaphor just hangs there.
What you do with it is simple and hard. Make the time. Find the brothers. Pick a thing to train toward — seven of them are signing up for a mud run together — and stop trying to carry it all alone. No studio, no script, just three men playing dominoes and telling the truth, which turns out to be exactly the medicine the month is about. This one's for any brother at 40 who keeps saying he'll start Monday.
Questions, Comments, Just Say Hi
Uncle@unctalkpod.com
Yeah, we're gonna do one of those. But I was, yeah, definitely since you brought it up. Anything like that, even if it's like a 5K, a marathon, a half marathon, just you know, when you get to that point where you you want to do something, because you kind of snowball into things like that.
Joe From WorkThat's what it is. A lot of times I lie and say I don't have time to blah. But no, nigga, you did not make time to blah. Yeah, you know what I mean? Because trust me, I don't have the time for half the stuff I did. That's what really was like eye-opening about it, you know, because I thought I knew about health, and no, I knew about pushing weights around. Yeah, I didn't know about health.
J StaffHello again, and welcome to another episode of On Talk Podcast. I'm your host, Jay Staff. We're in Men's Health Month, so we want to wish all uncles, fathers, and even some of the nephews out there happy men's health. Be sure to take care of yourself. Today we have another episode for you. We decided to do something different. We're still in Austin, but we decided to take a little break from the couch, go to the table, and play some dominoes.
Joe From WorkSo if you hear dominoes clicking on the two counters, or even if you hear a call random 10, 15, or 20, I think there were a couple 25s in there. Just know that we're playing a cool game and want you to jump in and enjoy it with us. So we look forward to you jumping into the episode with us. So let's just jump.
He's JaredFor working out. Yeah, I mean, you know, and then also like the statistics digging into okay, what what the data behind it is, yeah, of course, generally more women are gonna have the leisure time, or rather the quote unquote leisure time to work out than say male, say the men. I'd say that, depending on the situation. Um the thing also the difference between that ain't it, man. I mean, but you don't you I don't mean leisure time, but just let's say it's the man that's more likely to have in a relationship. This is how this is my perspective. Yeah, yeah, yeah. In a relationship. So they're more so gonna have um the time to do it than say the man. Oh, women. The women. Because that's what it was, right? Yeah, 20%. And we're talking about time. We moved on from that. My bad.
Joe From WorkYeah, no, no, no, no. No, but I'm saying, like, I I see so you think you think men have less less well perceived less time than what oh, you know what? That's true. Because we do it, yeah, you know, that's like, but okay, if we go off like traditional segments of time, right? Man's gonna be outside what? Right? Is that replacement? Washing dishes, clothing.
J StaffWell, what other thing? I mean, but right, I was about to say, but I think it's pretty equal, man.
He's JaredLike I would say, even outside of that, take just the natural, the natural um value system. So the thing that a man to a degree values in that woman, uh, that woman has to maintain more so than the man. Okay. You know what I'm saying?
Joe From WorkYou mean woman take a take a dude that's chubby other than a woman is more the Homer Simpson situation. That's kind of also right tells Sonny, I'm like, I'm saying that you give me the Peter Griffin, Homer Simpson. Uh-huh.
He's JaredThat that's to a degree, too. And so, like a woman, especially if she's if she's single at a certain age, yeah, that's something she's gotta continue to maintain at a high level. True, because that is what is attracting. Versus a man, it's other things, it's income, that's the ability to earn that, not necessarily their physical that's a big part of it. But that's from like the physical side of it. Now, the health side of it is different, which is where we're coming from.
Joe From WorkLike we're at 40 now, and it's like you know, we need to focus on health from a longevity standpoint, not from a okay, I need to maintain my physical. Now, therein lies the biggest difference between how I did you put five on the beginning? Yeah, just on the on the drop. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Sorry, yeah, just on the drop. All right. Who put I I dropped this one. And then I put this or something. I put the spinner. And then I put this. Okay, it's not gonna give you that. Now you and then you're gonna walk back. But um, what I was gonna say is that difference in trying to nice. The difference in trying to work out for a type of strength or a type of uh bulk or whatever, versus like, no, I'm trying to live. That's a whole different kind of exercising that I'm doing. Absolutely. It completely reshaped uh, I ain't getting nothing because that's on you. Um, fellas. I told y'all I didn't want to do that, but um, let me get 15 off of that. And I hope you're coming back, Charlie.
He's JaredI'm not boxing up. I'm not doing that.
Joe From WorkAnd also working out, that just ain't enough. It's like, you know, you you do your nutrition is what's going to affect how your workouts even affect your body. Because it's gonna pull from something. That lactic acid's gotta be made. So, you know, and so it's like, no, I gotta actually feel my body right to even exercise how I want to, because I could exercise correctly, but feel my body wrong, and it doesn't have the same benefits. And it's like, oh, so this whole taking care of myself is actually more legit doing some push-ups and sit-ups, bro. And that's what I don't that's really that's what really was like eye-opening about it, you know, because I thought I knew about health, and no, I knew about pushing weights around. Yeah, I didn't know about health. You know, it's the call composition. It's the you gotta get a little robe, baby. Exactly. But but you know, man, but that's the thing though. Working out is actually easier than now that we're now that we're older.
He's JaredLove open them up. I take that same three-piece. Okay. Trying to manage the same tank.
Joe From WorkOkay, second house, second house. We're building houses now, huh? We're building houses now, huh? Take a little look at that.
He's JaredI can't do nothing with it after that.
Joe From WorkI'm gonna see how that feels, man. That looks pretty good. Let me grab that. Ouch. Let me grab it. Let me grab that face. That looks pretty nice, actually.
J StaffOh my dumb.
Joe From WorkI like this.
J StaffWe got just going today.
Joe From WorkWait a minute. I'll let one do it. Oh man. Oh, man. We out here, we out here running around. I'll take it, man. I'll take it. I'll take it. I'll take it. Well, it's gonna slow down just a bit. Because I was gonna have to work. It's like you did get twice off of that round, didn't you? You had the three pieces and the I needed it though, because like I'm gonna get stuck. You know that you know those situations where it's like, well, you take it now. Because ain't nobody gonna fucking let it out. And I'm gonna get mad over here. Well, what happened? I accidentally made a mistake. Because how many, how many, how many uh doubles are you supposed to have before you it's four, right?
He's JaredYeah, you got put back at four. You have four.
Joe From WorkI had four. Amen. Well, hey, that's on you. I know that was on me. Because I only put we only put back once. I know. I think it's like after the second one, you gotta take what you get. So here's the deal, man. How sure am I that this is the one I don't want y'all to have? I mean, we're gonna find out. We're gonna find out. Come on. We can't do nothing about it. Let's find out. Let's find out. Let's find out.
He's JaredI can't know for it.
Joe From WorkLet's find out.
J StaffYou done?
Joe From WorkYeah, am I pulling? Yeah. But I still don't need that to be the one. I can still get fucked. I forgot that you had a hold of that. Nah. No? Here you go. Uh at least knock it down. Okay. Okay. Okay.
He's JaredBig Bertha.
Joe From WorkOkay.
He's JaredUm, all right. So we were talking exercise.
Joe From WorkYeah. But yeah, so like it's, you know, it's easier now because now you got like, all right, if you do like 120 minutes of zone two, which is basically like walking around to where, and then you do maybe an hour, like 30 minutes of like intense cardio where you max out, that's all you really need. And then really weights is a matter of like, you can do like 15 minutes of weights, like, and you're good. I ain't even bothered by the deadlifts, not even deadlifts, do a couple rounds of squats where you pick up like max weight at one or two because to stimulate your muscles. You don't really need to do much. It's not like I got my kettlebell and I got like a nice kettlebell workout, you know, and it's uh 616. It's like I'm I'm I don't need strength training anymore. You know what I'm saying? Like that's that's not that's not at all crazy. You just need to especially at this point too, because I'm also at like a a phase, right? I mean a slimming down whatever phase. Once I get to whatever target weight, yada yada, the maintaining exercises are going to be different than my you know weight loss exercises as well. So there's also a portion of that that I'm oh that's still out there too. Um there's a portion of that that I'm I'm uh also have to consider, you know, once the time comes. But the the biggest thing about it, you know, I I was I've always been a good starter, but again, you know, after you know, two weeks of especially burning myself out and and all that, it gets much harder to to uh stay on that sort of pace, which is why for the first time that kind of incremental but it's it's what's worked. You know, I mean I can slowly build, slowly build in there. I'm not gonna be able to do it. Like I'm looking at this on what channel was that was that I like that shot, bro. I think that yeah, I know too. And then I think that he's still dominant. I think that's some shit. Yeah, that's me, right? Yeah, yeah.
He's JaredRight. What is that? 17? So 15, I'm good. Yeah. Oh they're on 20.
Joe From WorkI I realized too late that I had all the rest of the sixes. I was like, ah, fuck. I got greedy. I was gonna do that six shot, bro. I was like, all right. I have big six, big two, big four, and then big five.
He's JaredUh-huh.
Joe From WorkOh. Oh, yeah, yeah. So that big two was gonna be no fucking favorite ring. Yeah. Not without the sixes out there, yeah. Exactly, which I had all in motherfuckers. Exactly. Is that right? I think that's I mean, look, look, man. Maybe it's by design. Who knows? It's weird. I'm not dexterous at all. Man, what y'all think about doing maybe like one of those um I rocks or one of them like um little thingamabobers where you like run a marathon, do flips, climb in a tough muddle. Oh man, what do you think? What'd you think about doing that? I'm not opposed to the idea of it. The amount of training that I would have to do to prepare myself, I wouldn't be looking forward to. Or maybe I should say it this way. Once I get that again, that target wave, once I get to that maintaining uh phase, I think I would want to do something like that. Like two four houses? I'll open a 150. Uh we can do 250. That's fine, won't be. Five, right? Oh, what do we got? Yeah, like 250 or 150. I'd normally do three houses and 150. Yeah, 150. Yeah, 150 by. Because if I'm gonna get my ass off, I ain't trying to wait for five houses. I'm trying to get one. Yeah, 150, my band.
J StaffWe get it, but we get it. Yeah, you won't.
Joe From WorkYeah, sorry, thank you. Like, man, we get it. I'm barely getting out of my first house. He like, buddy, go looking at the board. Like, no, don't look at me. Don't look at me and score.
He's JaredThat's that's that's real um shit right there. Yeah, don't look at me and score, bro. All right, just throw the domino out. Don't even fix it. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
Joe From WorkHe called it motherfucker on the phone and shit. Yeah, I just I'm saying I get that shit. Yeah, yeah.
He's JaredShowing these young bugs with the dude, some of these young bugs.
J StaffThey think they know what they're talking about. All types of shit.
Joe From WorkAnd I gotta take it.
J StaffY'all get my little man score three and shit.
Joe From WorkUh let me go ahead and get five.
J StaffSay y'all blah, what did you want?
Joe From WorkMan, that reminds me. I got you. I was like, I had to get one hand just to make the feel something. Well, no, wait, wait, wait. We used to play spades in college all the time. Love spades, dude. And uh Spade time? Dude, we have anyway, anyway. Uh used to play spades. We had this uh this note, the spiral notebook, dude, that all our spades games. Band of the Hawks versus the Mickeys. Not the Mickeys, bro. The Mickeys, the Mickeys, the Mickeys. It was me and a dude named McClish. Um and that was Mac Lamarry's Mickeys. But anyway.
J StaffGotcha, bro.
Joe From WorkIt's a poopy. Yo, it's just Jared over there messing everything up. Like, that's the thing.
J StaffHe really likes the.
Joe From WorkI don't like how he pulled and still domino. That's what bothered me about that last little round.
J StaffThat's the thing as up.
Joe From WorkThat's not how that's supposed to go, brother. What are you doing? I messed up again. And yeah. We're Jared at the fuck I can't even receive. You can risk here, man. Um, Mud Run. Yes.
He's JaredUm, Mud Runs coming up. We got the so the guys in the group, in the homeschool group, doing a mud run in May, in the May. There's like a Fort Worth, Fort Worth Muddy Dash, I think is what it's called. Yeah, man. And it's um, not me. Okay.
Joe From WorkUm that's intriguing. But I'm I'm I'm afraid we're doing it, man. It's intriguing, man. Uh-huh.
He's JaredAnd this um, it is UTA used to do the mud, mud gag. Yeah, yeah. UTA used to do that. I don't even remember that. Over there behind Greek Row, they had that mud. No, you put it never together. Negative points. It was a mistake. Yeah, negative points. Put it on there. So man, we're doing that. We're gonna jump in there and see what we do. And I and the thing is, like, I was looking at it, I saw just a couple of clips of what it is. But I just kind of want to show up and just kind of run it. But uh, I don't think you have to do every single obstacle. You just do an obstacle, do an obstacle if you want to do that one. But yeah, man, we're gonna do this like seven of us.
Joe From WorkOh, that's a good high participation rate too out of that group. Seven. That's fucking great. That that's cool, man. I've I've um that's an interesting, that's a nice physical challenge. I think that would be a very good physical challenge. Just to see, man, you know, see your metal a little bit.
He's JaredYou know, at first I was like, man, I don't know if I want to jump in there and you know be out there with all of them, but then I was like, I don't want them to do it and be like all like huddled up with each other. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
J StaffWe just went and sprayed it. You know what I'm saying?
Joe From WorkCome on, I'm clean here and taking the pictures. You know, some nice little bit lighting. Hey, shut up. We shut up. Like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
He's JaredI can't just yeah, no. You're right, man. But yeah, we're gonna do one of those. But I was, yeah, definitely since you brought it up. Anything like that, even if it's like a 5K, a marathon, a half marathon, just you know, when you get to that point where you you want to do something, you kind of snowball into things like that.
Joe From WorkThat does give enough time to, like I was talking about to because Joe, I mean, I you know me, I don't know, but I I could do it, but you know, we want to give time for Joe. Hey, hey, I'll take that for all.
He's JaredUh let's get that for that name bad. That's an interesting 15.
Joe From WorkBut but a statistic, uh, men aged 35 to 44 show a sharp decline in regular exercise compared to men 25 to 34. Like that could be tough. Gym attendance dropping nearly 40% in that decade. And so, and and basically it's just career, family, let's say when the kids came, right? Right, kids. You know. That's a fun excuse to use for why I'm lazy about shit sometimes, you know. Real talk. Because it's understandable. Oh, you know, yeah, yeah, but it's like, you know, earlier you you said something about blah blah blah blah making time, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And that's what it is. A lot of times I lie and say I don't have time to blah. But no, nigga, you did not make time to blah. Yeah. You know what I mean? Because trust me, I don't have the time for half the stuff I do. Yeah, but I didn't make the time. Listen, ain't that the truth? I'm gonna go ahead and watch a little uh look, the the social media, bro, was what we're talking about. The doom scrolling. Look, man, it had it put me in check, man. Like, is it me or is it you, Jack? I think it's me. It's my 15.
J StaffI have to go the way, but let me get your 15 on there.
Joe From WorkI don't want to interrupt like that, but but I mean, that's real talk. Yep. So I think that's that spot.
He's JaredBut yeah, man, that's that's a big yeah, that is, and that comes like with a lot of grace because I know you know every single day is a reason, is a is a locked up too, actually. Um me?
Joe From WorkYeah, no. Who is it? Joe? I mean, he keeps talking as crazy. I don't know. Right, yeah.
He's JaredYou're not holding your man.
Joe From WorkHe's setting me up nice. I like I like he's so he's a good guy. He's a good guy. Yeah, this dude, he's giving all day, man.
J StaffI don't think so.
Joe From WorkThey called me the biggest giver. Um wasn't the book with Jonas the Giver? What was that? I can't remember who wrote it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Where like they had like superpowers or something like that. No, no, feelers. They were feelers or something like that. He had the memories. He held the memories. Yeah, he was chosen to be. Because like, so in the game, right? And you turn 12 years old, you get assigned a job. Jonas doesn't get assigned a job. Yes. And he's whatever, but he's gonna be the giver. Yeah. He's the person who learns all the story. But I love it, has my favorite moment where they're throwing the apple, him and his homegirl. And that's when it's like, I'm like, oh, this is a sci-fi story. Because you know, in their village, it's black and white. You know what I'm saying? But above a certain height, color exists. And they're throwing their apple back and forth, and it went above that thing and it turned red into a motherfucker who ain't never seen color before. They didn't know how to describe what happened to this apple, dude. And I thought it was such beautiful writing to try to describe color from a nigga who don't know what color is. And it was just, it was beautifully descriptive. And that was that was a really, really I love that book, man. I but I love books, man. I love reading. English is like my such my favorite subject. Literature is so good. You can just get lost in those worlds. And I was a lot of escapism when I was young. You know what I mean? Yeah, you have a dystopian novel. Before video games, I kind of give that a just because that village definitely was. Because you know, at the end of that thing, he realizes like, oh, there's like our the real world out, you know, and ambiguous ending. He's he's sliding on that sled down to a real City, but he passes out because he's been in the top of the army. So he might even die. I don't even know what happens to Jonas when he escapes. But uh it's kind of like the village that in my channel movie, where it's like, oh, they were sectioned off in this weird experiment. You don't even know what it is, honestly. You know, they don't even explain that.
He's JaredBut um you're making much of a whole book where I was like, it's like removed all like memory of pain and discomfort. He was the only one that held that exactly.
Joe From WorkSo he could only he was the only one that could feel it exactly, what that was, and then the beauty of things. Start off with giving them like positive stuff. Yes. Uh-huh. And he got that first taste of pain. What is dying? I thought y'all were going to a paradise. Like, nah, dude. I don't know if I'm gonna bring it out of this. You're not gonna make it out of there. Good. And then y'all leave it at so yeah, yeah, yeah.
He's JaredThat's a three-piece.
Joe From WorkNo, that's uh that's uh 25. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'll take that. I'll take that. Ooh. All darks. That son of a bitch. I don't like that you caught up that one. Wait, one? Yeah, five, ten. Dark scored, right? Unfortunately, you did. I said that's how many marks. No, no, no, no, no, no.
J StaffNo, no, no, no, no.
Joe From WorkOkay. Okay, it's a week march. Okay, that's attention. I see you, I see you. Uh and then I'm gonna be gone. You weren't supposed to get the big money. That wasn't how that's supposed to happen. I've two excuse me. I have one more at least. That's cool. Three more. No.
He's JaredThree blank. Yeah, yeah. I messed up.
Joe From WorkAnd and had too many pairs. And had four. Yeah.
He's JaredThree blank. Yeah, yeah, you got three blank. Three blank and uh okay.
Joe From WorkY'all over here really calculated, bro. Y'all just be calculated. Or two, yeah. Calculated.
He's JaredYeah, that was good. That was it.
Joe From WorkThat was it right there? That was it. Like Oh, I forgot about old boys sitting up there. Yeah. Right? Yeah. Well, we'll see fist and three. You gotta play? Fist and three. Oh gosh.
J StaffOkay.
Joe From WorkOh no! Oh no, no, no, that's going to be 18. We'll see what it is. Um, it was three blank. Ain't that a bit?
He's JaredYeah. I thought you had three blank. And I was hoping you played three blank there. And anyway, all right.
Joe From WorkUm, so where are we at? Uh we were talking about how um you know, stroke limit is directly tied. Not stroke. Whoops. Whoops. He's right on time, baby. You was late. Oh, fuck it. Let's lock it. There you go. All righty. Oh, yeah, yeah. Alrighty. Yeah, I'm done. That's good. Dang. And we can't even get it out either. Yeah. And he's still gonna be a blast hole. That's nice. Yeah, what do you hold in? That's blank. I'm the lowest. Blank blank. No, I got blank blank. Uh oh, shoot him. Oh, maybe not. He got blank blank. No. I'm still blank. They still got yeah, because I was like, I got a little bit more.
He's JaredYeah, I got five or more. You want two. That's what I was hoping you that's why I was hoping you have blank three. Because I had these two others that I could hit on with that, and I thought you were double blank. That's my three. Yeah, I thought, yeah, okay. It was like, ah, I'm gonna just end this game, right? Well played. Who do I get? Who do I get off of that? Do I get anybody off of that?
Joe From WorkI get it. I had five. I had five on me. I had five on me. Okay. So but who locked the game? Me. So wait, if you locked the game, don't you get? No, he didn't lock. He didn't. Yeah, he locked the game. And then so whoever had the lowest. Oh, but you had that's right. That's right. Yeah, that's right. Look at that. See, the good thing is we're putting these these rules on record. Calm down. Calm down, dude. I can't wow, I can't bless them, I can't bless them.
He's JaredSo does it show? What's up?
Joe From WorkIf anyone is no, I didn't do a streaming. Oh, okay. So it's just recording?
He's JaredYeah, it's just recording.
Joe From WorkWe were live. No, yeah, yeah.
J StaffLive isn't like recording, man.
Joe From WorkLive is it not live, okay? Not y live. Live, live. It's live, right? Come on. Okay, my bad.
J StaffYeah.
Joe From WorkYeah. I figured. You know what? We gotta get something to eat, man.
He's JaredYeah, yeah, yeah. Let's do that. I mean, where are we at? We almost at three? Yeah, we almost at breakfast.
Joe From WorkLet's do this and then go downstairs and then get something to eat and then finally. That's cool. Or do we want to go out someday? I thought you were ordered door to that. I'm gonna be an honest with you.
He's JaredYeah, order door ass. I definitely don't feel like going back out. Because I drove, just drove like fucking four hours today. Five hours. I don't know if that's anymore. Especially at night. What city I'm familiar with.
J StaffOh, you're not familiar with our school?
He's JaredI mean, like night.
Joe From WorkThis is intricacy. Oh, well, that's like driving downtown and got you guys. No, usually we were in Arlington, not here. That's also true. But I'm just gonna act like it's all the same because I ain't from here.
J StaffNo, no, no, no. I mean, like Sammy's from Austin, aren't you?
