Heart disease continues to affect millions of people, but could nutrition play a larger role in cardiovascular health than many realize?
In this episode of The Nutrition Factor, Dr. Jimmy Steiger explores the relationship between nutrition, heart function, and coronary disease. Drawing from decades of experience in natural health and nutritional research, he discusses how food quality, nutrient intake, and biochemical balance may influence cardiovascular wellness.
Dr. Steiger examines the importance of B vitamins, minerals, and dietary patterns in supporting the body’s natural systems. He also shares observations from clinical experiences and discusses how deficiencies and lifestyle habits may impact heart health over time.

Welcome to the Nutrition Factor. I'm your host, Dr. Jimmy Steager, and today's subject is going to be coronary disease. We're going to be talking today about the consumption of devitalized food as it uh pertains to human health, especially the arteries of the heart. And um what we find that more and more people today are dropping dead from heart disease than ever before. Uh back in the early 80s, when I was in California, I worked with a doctor at uh one of the universities, actually University of California, on an experiment we did on animals. And it was very interesting to note how this also applies, obviously, to humans. So what we did was we put a group of 24 dogs of all types of ages and breeds on a diet of white flour, which was enriched with synthetic vitamins, and we compared their behavior with another group fed on the same white flour, not enriched, and the amazing result was that the dogs on the enriched flower died first and tended to die after their actions became that of what we call sedate senility by sudden heart failure. The human patient becomes definitely sedate when he begins to feel angina pains upon exertion of any type. So we ask ourselves, can it be that these dogs and the consumption of enriched flour by humans has an equally direct bearing on the fact that heart disease and cancer are nowadays listed as the predominating causes of sedate senility and death, while there is a general decline in other causes. Well, we concluded that after 12 years on this experiment, that the addition of synthetic vitamins to flour increased the demand for some of the unknown factors in the diet, which as a consequence became acutely deficient sooner than the diet with the non-enriched flour. These unknown factors could therefore quite appropriately be called the heart protective group. This would strongly indicate that the vitamin fractions so far available from synthetic sources have failed to do anything towards relieving or preventing any type of heart problems or heart disease. In fact, we believe these experiments tend to show that they have done the opposite. With the above data in mind, it is interesting to reflect upon the accumulated clinical evidence. A good whole B vitamin, or what we call a B complex vitamin, versus another product, especially synthetic forms, the favorable results obtained with whole food B vitamins and other important minerals products are no doubt due to the presence of some of the as yet undefined factors in our natural complex source of B vitamins. Some of the literature that we did earlier offers some very interesting clues on this entire subject matter. When a cardiac crisis appears as evidenced by precordial pain, palpitation, breathlessness, prompt action is always necessary as this condition is responsible for the most of the fatalities that occur in beriberi. Now, for those of you that are not familiar with that term, uh beriberi is a term uh used for a vitamin B1 or what we call a thiamine deficiency. B1 is found in foods like milk, beans, vegetables, meat, and whole grains. And so these forms of disease in the human body can be corrected by ingesting the correct amount of B1 into the human body. Uh alcohol abuse is one of the main causes of berry berry because it affects how the body absorbs thiamine, and the body can only store small amounts of the thiamine, and levels can drop very, very quickly if not enough is ingested. As a general rule, your B complex vitamins uh normally will only last four to six hours in the human body. So it's very important that you continue to put these in the body on a regular basis, and that's very important. So all my patients that come in, we usually have them taking extra B vitamins depending on their VMA test results. Uh we have them taking B vitamins usually twice a day, and um so whole food B complex vitamins are always the best, and uh no doubt due to the presence of some of the yet unidentified factors, um we always want to try to stick with anything that's natural. Uh, even on my Pro B uh vitamins, everything's in a natural organic form. So this is very important uh for people to understand when you're taking a vitamin, try not to go out and buy these cheap grade synthetic supplements. Very, very important uh to stay away from. In the past, uh nitroglycerin uh was used, and it is needless to say, however, that the treatment is merely palliative and does not permanently relieve the cardiac distress which is liable to reoccur at any time and thus end the patient's life very quickly if something's not done about it. There's a couple of doctors by the name of Vetter and Chamberlain also found that the administration of alcoholic extract of rice potions to babies or infants uh suffering from infantile beriberi resulted in an immediate alleviation of the series cardiac disturbance, which was one of the main symptoms of that disease. Uh, these two doctors also found that the same extract, when administered to an adult case of pernocuous cardiac beriberi afforded quite as prompt relief from the distressing cardiac symptoms. Since, as well as been seen later, the extraction in this form is quite incapable of relieving the nervous or paralytic symptoms of beriberi, it follows that there is some substance in this extract which exerts a direct and immediate action on the heart. The infants were all given 20 drops of this extract rice polls every two hours during the awakening period, and the results have been truly amazing. Improvement is immediate for those children or infants that are vomiting. This will stop within 24 to 30 hours, and the child who has not passed any urine for several days, which is one of the effects of this disease, will start to urinate four to five times freely, and this is huge for the patient that has this type of condition. The edema disappears in the course of just a few days, usually on the first night after treatment has begun. The infant falls into a very deep sleep, although it may have been practically sleepless for weeks. This child will start to sleep, and the palpitation will cease usually within two to three days as well. We may now inquire what relation does this substance bear to B1. There is evidence that this cardiac vitamin is not identical with certain synthetic vitamins. And the alcoholic extract, which relieves the cardiac symptoms so promptly, is equally efficacious in dispelling the dropsy in cases of what we call wet berriberry. And there's two types, wet and dry, but it is quite ineffective in curing the paralytic symptoms of the dry berry berry, while the administration of a good quality B complex base promptly cures the paralysis. And please note that acetylcholine is a substance which, as a consequence of stimulus arriving through the nerve, is produced at the myoneural junction, causing the muscles to contract. After it has accomplished its purpose, it is generally destroyed by an enzyme. Choline esterase and prolonged acetylcholine administration, however, will consistently cause coronary disease and death in these dogs or any type of animal that we tested. Now, the maintenance and control of enzyme activity is a characteristic function of vitamins, especially many of the factors of B complex and the G group. To determine just which of these may be useful to promote the maintenance of cholinesterase, we have for some years conducted clinical observation and test of, once again, vitamin B and G whole food concentrates for various sources to find one that was most effective in accomplishing consistent relief in cases of coronary disease and angina pectoris. We finally found after many years a combination of extracts coming from sprouted barley, yeast, and brains of a young calf, which appeared to be quite dependable and acting as a physiological nitroglycerin for relieving anginal pains and coronary spasticity. Since, in the view of the known value of nucleotinic acid in coronary cases, vitamin G, the or the vitamin G group, uh was the natural subdivisions of the B complex to promote this type of action. Gastric disturbances are commonly part of the heart and coronary disorders, suggests of common cause in this case. In the relationship of the sex hormones to the cause of angina pectoris, it is also apparent in the gastritis and ulcer cases. Ulcers are far more common in men, just as angina pectris is six times as frequent in men as in women. Pyloronic or hypertonus, by preventing the normal regurgitation of what we call the alkaline duodenal contents, is a great cause of gastric hyperacidity. So here we seemingly have the identical spastic reaction of an accumulation of acetylcholine. Hyperacidity is considered one of the chief causes of ulcers and gastritis. And the basic reason for coronary disease, angina, pectrus, gastritis, thrombosis of the coronary cerebral vessels, arterial sclerosis in general, on the basis that the case would differ both in kind of some type of location and degree as to the relative deficiency of the enzyme cholinesterase or as to the degree of overwork of the nerve endings in the organ that may be involved. Nerve tension and nervous shock, as is well known, bring on the gastritis and etc., even coronary collapse, where such spastic reaction reaches titanic proportions and invades areas of sensor innervation. Angina pains can be created. These hypotheses would explain why nervous strain and nerve shock can be so detrimental to the angina and coronary cases. These events simply cause the secretion of more acetylcholine at the nerve endings and pile up what we call biochemical dynamite. At last, a titanic attack is possible, and the final setting off impulse need not to be particularly violent, and the size of the flame that ignites a store of gunpowder is not important, but the amount of explosive is. The accumulation of explosive here in coronary disorders is dependent on two factors. The intensity and frequency of stimulation of the coronary nerve endings, which generate the acetylcholine and the amount of cholinesterase available to remove the acetylcholine. When the balance favors the accumulation of acetylcholine, danger is ahead for the patient, for they are now loaded up and ready for an attack, likely to end in some form of coronary breakdown. General arterial sclerosis has been produced clinically by the administration of acetylcholine when tried for its remedial action on arthritis. Its success in this type of disease was found to be offset by the serious consequences of arterial degeneration. Here, then, we might have the explanation for the up to now situation of the coronary artery, often being the first one in the body to show signs of sclerosis. It is a most overworked artery. Its walls as a consequence of emotion and strenuous exercise are constantly subject to acetylcholine producing nerve stimuli. Therefore, deliberation of acetylcholine will be greater than elsewhere, and the need for choline esterase will also be greater than elsewhere. The muscle walls of the arterioles regulate the blood flow to all the capillaries. Adrenaline can dilate arterioles by contracting the vessels, supplying the arterial wall, thereby causing arterial wall muscle fiber to relax by reason of the choking off of the appropriate nutrition to this area. Now, years ago, back in 44, there was a group of doctors by the name of Dr. Fulton and Lutz at Boston University announced that their verification of the regulated function of blood flow to the capillaries was due to several things. And the anatomical makeup of a vascular air thereby determines whether it would be contracted or relaxed by adrenaline, and the opposite effect of this agent on different kinds of tissues is made rational. Hypothetically, then if acetylcholine was not destroyed by cholinesterase promptly after a contractive impulse, as it normally is, and his relative chronic state of contraction were created, the effect would of necessity be permanent damaged to those arterioles which thus deprived of sufficient nutrition. In such of each of these cases, the extent of the nutritional deficiency would determine the rate and final degree of degeneration of the muscle fibers and their subsequent replacement by connective tissue, all of which appears to be the process involved in the development of arteriosclerosis. Now, without cholinesterase, there would be little free choline in the tissues. And without free choline, there is a tendency for development of papillomata, which is the vagus function is impaired and lactation is impeded. Choline is also available from the splitting of ingested lestin. This splitting is done by another enzyme called lesthanase. Often lectenin administration fails to do what is expected, fails to relieve what we call fatty liver, fails to relieve arthritis or arthritis pains in the body, it can fail to correct psoriasis, all of which may be successfully accomplished in other cases. These failures are probably due to lack of lestonase or cholinesterase, as either should remember uh render what we call choline being available. Now, B vitamin contains less than ACE, so do unrefined rice bran and calf brain. This may explain why B vitamin is a success in some arthritic cases. It theoretically would fail where lesson is in too low a content in the bloodstream. Lessin often relieves arthritic pains, but we can see why neither B vitamin nor lessin has received much acceptance as any form of useful remedy, for neither can work where the other is missing. The lestinase of B vitamin, or what we call B venomin in this case, would release the free choline in the blood if lestin is available. If lestin is not present and the natural occurring lestinase of the tissues is present, lestin administration should be effective in yielding choline. To get at the real or basic cause here, we must replace the nutritional deficiency that impaired the formation of cholesterase and other enzyme systems in the body. We reaffirm a principle previously stated correction of faulty nutrition to one's diet permits natural balances to recur in the endocrine and biochemical systems of the body. The complexity, not to say confusion, of present-day therapeutics should serve as a caution against hasty introduction of additional complexities, at least as long as more rational theories and simpler remedies prove applicable and effective. And this is where natural medicine and naturopathic medicine come into play versus any form of synthetic chemicals or derivative administered by the Medical industry. And the average physician, no matter how learned or courageous, can hardly find any great comfort in prescribing more or less these theorized substitutes for hypothetical deficiencies, be it hormones or nutritional elements otherwise. The honest doctor or what we call physician, the honest physician feels his responsibilities keenly and prefers to move about on more solid ground whenever possible. Therefore, where natural food remedies or proper nutrition is needed and the replacement will correct existing trouble, the typical MD avoids hormone therapy and its dangers of misdiagnosis and overdoses. Violation of this rule brought about the death of patients given acetylcholine injections for their arthritis. In our extraction of the sources of natural B complex, we try to carry enzymes through intact, no heat destruction to enzymes is used at any time in my formas. And that's important because the degradation of this occurs very quickly when high heat hits these nutrients in the making or extraction process of making a good quality B vitamin. My supplements are often conjugated with heat liable proteins, often of special nutritional values, very probable as enzymes, and these considerations serve to explain the entirely different action of the vitamins accompanied by its natural synergistic forms, as shown in my line of products. And we do this for all of them. The use of my supplements may be used to help with the following overall health problems in the human body. Number one, it can be used clearly for all types of remedies for coronary and angina pectoris type of heart disease. Can be used number two as a factor to help combat fatty degeneration and cirrhosis of the liver, and we see a lot of those patients. Number three, as a possible remedy for all types of arthritic pains and gout, which is the same thing, by the way. Number four, to help the relief of psoriasis, and number five, as a physiological remedy for different types of gross on the body, also reducing the load on the heart and heart arrhythmias. Now, I've got two cases I'm gonna run by you real quick that uh I've had in my repertoire of seeing patients over the past 47 years. And this first case is very interesting. This lady came to me, we'll just call her Miss Jones for the sake of giving her a name, to protect the identity of all of our patients, obviously. She came to me with a racing heart, uh, apparently no control from the vagus nerve, which is extremely important, otherwise known as the parasympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system, which normally acts as a governing instrument and which is put out of commission by potassium deficiency alone, and as well as by deficiency of the riboflavin or B2 group as well. My nutritional program and summit protocol for this is very effective in bringing such an overrunning hearts under control by the reason of its content of lack of potassium, which we should obtain in sufficient quantities from green leafy vegetables as part of our diet. If not, then we have the right elemental form of potassium that will help you with this, and we have to use this in a lot of cases. And in this case, the restoration of the function of the vagus was apparently very efficiently accomplished by adding my probio B supplement to their diet twice a day, along with the good quality nutritional program that I built for them. In addition, uh there were evident occasional extra cystoles commonly known or called skipped beets. And um when we look at our graphs uh on this particular patient, the first graph shows four or five in a one-minute period, and the second shows only one. So that shows the difference in what's going on with the uh systolic and diastolic heartbeat of the patient. Also, the muscular condition was evidently quite bad, uh, fatigue being evidenced by the varying uh amplitude of the pulsations in this patient. In fact, it practically resembles the so-called uh hammer or water hammer pulse of aortic regurgitation. And you can hear this in a lot of patients when they come into our office. You don't even have to put a scope on them. And the heart is obviously struggling under terrific handicap in this case, nothing more than a vitamin and mineral starvation issue. Um I had a dear friend of mine of 43 years that was not only a member of my health club, he was a martial arts student, and he was suffering from this very issue uh just three months ago, back at the beginning of the year, and I'd been telling him for over 10 years to get this straight. He needed to get his diet corrected, he needed to lose some weight, and we needed to do VMA testing on him to help him because you could hear this regurgitation of the aorta, and I knew it was just a matter of time it was going to take him down, but he didn't take it serious, and we lost him about three months ago due to this very thing. When his wife called me, I had told her I'd been speaking to her husband about this for many, many years, and she was aware of that, and unfortunately, he didn't take it serious enough, and that's a true loss. He was a great gentleman and uh great friend. The next polygraph made um 14 hours later on this lady is really hard to believe in the same case because the single extra sestol is the only indication of anything abnormal, with the exception of still um perceptible fatigue waiver in the uh amplitude. Now the pulse rate uh has dropped from 160, 150, which is unbelievable, down to about 80. And so this clearly shows that by supplying the nutrients to the heart that they need. Uh in this case, we did potassium and a B-complex nutrient. Um this ceased all that, and this lady is amazing. She's fine today. She's been with me for over 12 years, and she's done an amazing job of taking care of her body and following the program. The next case, uh, we'll just call this lady Miss Smith, for the same reason of protecting our patient's identity, came to me and had uh a rapid but very, very weak wavering pulse. In Chinese medicine, we test for pulse endpoints throughout the body, unlike the medical doctors do, so we can tell a lot of times where this is coming from through the pulses that we use throughout the body. And the tracing is typical of what we call auricular flutter, considered as being due to the inability of the ventricle uh the ventricle to follow the oracle, where this is a result of impairment of conduction of impulses from the auricular-ventricular node. And it is no doubt a situation that is partly a result of deficiency of B complex vitamins as well. Uh, and this component known as uh antiparalysis factor. B complex and the proper ratio of potassium, once again, to sodium owes its merit in controlling heart block, fibrillation, and similar arrhythmias to its content of this factor. And I believe this to be true for cardiographic evidence of this and the polygraphic curves made the next morning after giving the patient these nutritional supplements showing a great improvement and some tachycardia being still present. However, my pro mineral is useful in getting the vagus function back to a somewhat normal because of its full spectrum of all 22 minerals that we supply in my basic formula alone, not counting my custom formula that we build strictly for all of our patients who have done our testing and we find out what they need. A potassium deficiency is very persistent in keeping up the pulse rate. Most of us are low in intake of this essential element, which is considered to be most vital in any and all types of heart function. Potassium is known to be the activator of the cells that set up the timing frequency of the heart. So just remember it's extremely important, ladies and gentlemen, that regardless of what type of situation you maybe have, we know now that coronary disease and the right nutrition can help the coronary disease patient by putting the correct amount of nutrients in the human body. And uh the probio B complex that I have, along with all the other minals, which there are 22 that you need on a daily basis, extremely important for the entire body to do what it needs to do. And in this case, since we're talking about coronary disease, we can clearly show you that these types of cases that I just mentioned, and these are only two, I've got many that we can show you that are the same type of situation or helped through the same type of supplementation. Now we know that everyone's different, and we get it. However, it's extremely important that without direct B vitamins, without the correct nutrients of all types, especially the minerals, remember that very few people will ever die from a vitamin deficiency because they're what we call the building blocks of the human body, whereas everyone will die from a mineral deficiency. Once again, I've stated this in some of my other podcasts. And if you missed them, remember this. There are 22 minerals in the human body that we need on a daily basis. Some are more important than others, yes, manganese being number one, calcium number two, and so forth. I could do an entire show on that, which we will one day, and talk about these in order. However, when you pass away, you die from a mineral deficiency. Just like the friend of mine I told you about a moment ago. If you have issues with the human body, you must correct it through the right minerals and the right vitamins and the right amino acids. That's the reason here at my clinic, we do VMA testing in all of our patients. And in most of them, we also do parasite testing well, because that's a big deal in our society, and most people are totally off that subject and not aware of it because in medical school they're taught in virology class not to ever mention parasites or worms of any type to the patient. So that in itself is unfortunate because the medical doctors that come out, and I have a lot of friends of mine that I take care of that are medical doctors and take care around the country, and they will tell you the same thing. Truly unfortunate. However, we do know that for people that are going to take care of their body through the correct nutritional supplementation, the right diet, eating five or six meals a day periodically to strengthen the heart and keep the nitrogen levels up where it should be, you can keep these types of diseases from taking over the human body. And you can beat most of them if you get to them in time, regardless of your age. So remember this, this is extremely important.
