It's Saturday night. The time is 9 47 p.m. You're sitting on the couch in a quiet, empty house. You're still drained from another week at work where just doing your job feels way harder than it should while you're carrying around heavy feelings of heartbreak. On impulse, you grab your phone, open up social media, and immediately see a picture of a couple you know on their honeymoon. You get that gut punch feeling as you immediately lock your screen and toss it onto the cushion beside you. And you think, well, so much for that. As you start pondering non-phone things to do. You know some of your buddies are out at a local bar, but picturing yourself in there just reminds you of the time you took your ex there to meet all of them. You think maybe you should throw in your favorite movie, but strangely, it just doesn't sound appealing. In fact, nothing sounds appealing right now. Instinctively, your mind starts to explore solutions. What if I just went out to a different bar by myself? Maybe I should delete my social media. Maybe I should just reach out to her. And of course, none of those actually sound good. And now you're stuck again. You think, geez, how much time has to pass? The truth is, you're not just lonely, you're in a trap. And for guys who are struggling through a divorce or a bad breakup, this loneliness trap has the potential to drag you down into self-destructive habits, isolation, unhealthy rebounds, or becoming bitter and closed off to the world. And that's exactly why I'm broadcasting today's episode. We're talking three bulletproof ways to stop feeling empty and start feeling grounded, strong, and in control again. This might be the most important episode you hear all year. Welcome back to the Badass Comeback Podcast. You know, something we've probably all heard is that it's easier for women to move on after a breakup. And I mean, if you really think about it, women usually have large social groups where they can get together and talk about their problems and feelings, which helps them process their feels faster. In fact, once they realize that a relationship is coming to an end, they might even reach out to their girlfriends ahead of time, which basically primes them to help catch her when the breakup finally happens. They offer her all the sympathy in the world, which helps her feel supported and not alone. Then they plan shopping trips, slumber parties, beach days, and fill up their calendars really quickly. But of course, it's a different story for us guys. Not only do we tend to let our calendar stay relatively empty after a breakup, we usually have a smaller social circle, and as we get older, of course, that circle shrinks. So right off the bat, there's two disadvantages. Then add the fact that dudes don't usually cry on each other's shoulders. Sometimes we find that not talking about it actually helps, but that's really up to the individual. When I'm supporting a buddy through a breakup or divorce, I just hang out with him and avoid the subject unless he brings it up. But here's one thing that can really mess a guy up, and that's just being unwilling to fill his calendar back up and reach out to anyone in any way, even if it's to do something unrelated to breakup support. And let's be honest, most guys don't know how to be alone. And all this goes back to our old programming as males. We might feel shameful when we ask for support because we have this idea that if we can't carry it all on our own, that makes us weak. But here's the harsh reality that is actually going to lead us into point number one. Not reaching out and asking for support is showing weakness. Yes, reaching out may bruise your ego, it may be cringe, but it still requires strength to overcome that insecurity. So here's point number one, boys. Show your strength by reaching out to your fellow men. If there's one thing that makes a man, it's fixing something despite the effort, fear, or discomfort that comes with it. Staying on that couch, sitting in a puddle of your own sadness won't move you forward. It won't help time pass any faster, and it certainly won't help you feel better quicker than you think. Our goal is to feel better faster. Why? Because being in a rut fucking sucks. It zaps your energy. Your brain will default to pleasure-seeking activities, and you're setting yourself up for a future that will keep your baseline lower than before. And according to a study by Seidel et al. in 2013, social exclusion lowers testosterone in men. But reintegration raises testosterone back up. So, guys, the problem is isolation. The fix is social interaction. And yeah, I totally get it. You may not want to put in the effort. I have been there plenty of times. Why? It's simple. The dopamine just isn't there. Breakups cause massive dopamine crashes. Hence a large reason why you're probably feeling stuck and empty. And since dopamine is the brain fuel to get you to take action, of course, you're not going to want to put in the effort. But here's the thing our brains relearn. Yes, our brains react to good and bad things happening. However, realize, boys, that you indeed have the ability to retrain your brain to get your dopamine flowing again. The initial stage of this reprogramming is most definitely the hardest. And remember, the first 10% of anything is always the hardest. So the answer is to reignite social interaction despite what you feel like doing. Here's some practical options. Reach out to your best guy friends. Tell them that you want to meet up and do something you guys enjoy doing. Here's the thing though, be specific. And meet up away from your house. Not only do you need guide time, being away from your environment will give you a nice break and offer a change of scenery and vibe and thus positively affect your energy. Next idea is getting a group of guys together like a quote band of brothers where you guys do a regular activity, poker night, hiking group, even Sunday night football. Make this a weekly thing if possible. Guys, I can't tell you how much you will benefit if you have a weekly activity on your calendar. Why? It gives you something to look forward to. When you're slogging through the work week, having your eyes on that prize at the end of the week or whenever will lift your spirits a lot more than dreading going back to an empty house with nothing planned. Next idea. Lastly, you can always join an online group. There are a growing number of social media groups for men going through divorce. You don't have to actually meet up with them, but you can always find new guys to talk to who are going through similar pains as you. In fact, if you do all four of those options, you'll be much further along and feeling way better next month, possibly next week. So wrapping up point number one, yes, it may be uncomfortable to reach out for support. Your brain will not want you to do it. When you are in that moment, you have to tell yourself, you know what, brain, we're gonna do this no matter what. You are the boss of your mind and the king of your life. Your brain will acquiesce and relearn that reaching out is just what you're gonna do. The dopamine and motivation will follow. And remember, you need to initiate these social interactions. Don't sit around and wait for people to reach out to you. All right, point number two of avoiding the loneliness trap. Get back into your purpose. When us guys are with our girl, most of our purpose revolves around the relationship. It takes up almost all of our time. And I'm gonna be honest, most of us guys tend to let go of our individually manly purpose once we start getting serious with her, and especially once we start a family. Thus, a year, five, ten, twenty years goes by, and you can't even remember the last time you did X, Y, or Z for yourself. We get used to this shared time and purpose with her, and then poof, that purpose gets taken away, and we're left with way fewer meaningful things that help us feel like ourselves. Then we just sit with a broken heart and no direction. That is the problem. So what is the fix? Get back into your purpose. I know you know what that is. I know you're thinking of things you gave up for more relationship time. And I know that some of you are even thinking that purpose has expired. Maybe you moved to a different place that doesn't have that activity readily available. Maybe you're a bit older now, and what you used to do is now considered a young man's sport. If this is the case, now is the time to explore something new. If you're not sure if you like it, fucking try it anyway. It can't hurt. No more checking in with her to see if you have the time to go do it. Whether it's reigniting an old hobby, trying a new activity on for size, now is the time to grab it by the balls and dive in. Guys, when your schedule is empty, it feels like this dark vastness with all the extra time on your hands. It's really easy to get lost at sea that way. When your buddies are busy, that's the time to get regrounded into things you love to do. As guys, we feel the best when we are doing our thing. Masculine happiness is rooted in purpose. And start small. Block out, I don't know, 20 minutes per day to do your thing. A helpful tip is to schedule that activity for times when you're going to be the most lonely, like Friday night and weekends, for example. And bonus points if it's something away from the house. Even more bonus points if it's something you can bring a buddy in for. You can even arrange to text a bro to give him a recap of your day, kind of like an accountability partner. Because even if your buddy is super busy all the time, doesn't have time to check his phone, knowing you have to text him anyway will help you stay motivated. And as we just talked about, this might be tough to get started. You may not want to do it. But just remember, we are retraining our brains to help push us through this time. You may have to just say, ah, fine, I'll do it. But just remember, all you're doing is proving to yourself how strong you truly are. Trust me, your motivation will be cruising right alongside you before you know it. And yes, you were a great boyfriend, an amazing husband, but you are still you. You have that badass within ready to be unleashed. Take advantage of this time and immerse yourself into something that makes you feel fulfilled, accomplished, and confident. Okay, final point number three on how to avoid the loneliness trap. And this one might be the toughest one. This is something that I definitely struggled with a lot after breakups. But once I quit being a wuss and just did it anyway, it was the final ingredient to start feeling better faster. And that is this. Find strength in solitude. Wait, what? Being alone is supposed to help me feel strong? Isn't this episode about reconnecting with my bros and finding my purpose? Guys, do you think a badass gets phased by being alone? Do you think he caves and calls that one chick who's super into him and rebound just to get a nut off, even when he's not attracted to her at all? Do you think a badass doom scrolls living vicariously through other people's posts or hang out with friends who are bad influences? My dudes, when you're not chilling with your best buds or doing that super masculine purpose you were made for, you're gonna be at home by yourself for a while at least. But let's face it, the beginning and end of your day are just you. And those can be the toughest parts of your day. You were used to going to bed and waking up with someone. Now the problem is being alone. The fix is a mindset change. Yes, this one might take some time, but it ties into point numbers one and two to give you that edge you need to push forward through this time. Find strength in solitude. Become okay with being alone. Not alone forever, of course, at least for the beginning and the end of your day. Here's how to get that started. Schedule alone time with no screens, no games, not even reading. How long? Again, start small. Even 10 minutes per day this week. Make it as painfully simple as possible. Go for a walk, meditate, journal, breathing exercises. It has to be something where you're purposely turning the dial down to one out of ten. Next, when you're doing it, do a reframe if necessary. But when is it going to be necessary to do a reframe? If any negative thoughts come in, turn them into positive ones. If you're thinking, I'm so lonely, turn it into I'm leveling up in private. If you think, this is stupid, I hate being alone with my thoughts, reframe it as this is making me more badass. However you choose to reframe it, guys, make it your own. Make it something that makes sense to you with a goal of becoming okay with yourself in that moment. If you can't think of anything as you're listening to this, don't worry. You'll figure it out in that moment. Ten minutes, all you need. If you feel like going more, of course, more power to you. Guys, learning how to be okay with being alone will not only help you through this time, it will help you in many different areas of your life in the future. Most importantly, when you start dating again. If you can get good at being alone, you won't chase women anymore. You won't get desperate anymore, you won't settle for less and then and you certainly won't settle for crazy. Why? Because at that point, it will be better to be alone than to be with a woman who is anything less than exactly what you want. Women will also be able to feel that peace in you, and the vibe you give off will be one that tells her that you're not thirsty. It tells her that you're not going to become a dependent boyfriend, and that will make her more attracted to you. Women want a dude that seems just out of their grasp, and you will become that badass if you can master the skill of being alone. And of course, this isn't to say that being alone means that you're just going to be sitting quietly by yourself all day and never interact with humans ever again. You should still foster healthy friendships and be the best son, brother, uncle, or father you can be. But when the day is done and you walk into an empty house, you will look forward to that alone time much more. Here's a study that was published in Scientific Reports in 2023. The administrators tracked 178 adults up to 21 days. More daily solitude was linked to less stress and greater autonomy with benefits accumulating over time. That's exactly what we're after. Once again, the science is on our side. Take something low energy in a small time frame and reframe as needed. Wrapping up here, guys, all three of these points we talked about involve filling up your calendar. An empty calendar after heartbreak leads to the loneliness trap. When you have things planned with your friends, your purpose, and by yourself, you will basically never run out of things to look forward to. If there's anything that can make you sink even faster, it's staring into a future where you just go through the motions at work, come home, do some chores, and then sit around. Looking forward to fun activities does wonders, not only to pull you out of this shit faster, it will fortify your confidence and resilience. You are reconstructing yourself into a badass. You are building a foundation in your psychology that is solid enough to support your new badass ambitions and soon support a new love coming into your life that was way better than before. So remember, guys, social interaction with your best buds and family. Start chasing your passions again. Reframe your mind to be okay with alone time with no screens or anything too stimulating. You might encounter the urge to procrastinate or bail on plans, but trust yourself to relearn how to become excited about those things by just freaking doing it anyway. The first 10% of anything is always the hardest. Rebuilding during this low point gives you a much more solid foundation than trying to rebuild or build something up when life is good and when you're sharing your time with a romantic partner. You have the time. Now is the time. You can point your life in any direction you want. This is badass construction. A badass turns horrible circumstances into opportunities to become better. You have the freedom to think like that, and no one can ever take that away from you. You have the power to make your life anything you put your mind to, and never underestimate these simple habits that you will implement. Your future is waiting for you. All you have to do is take one step at a time, trust your process, and above all else, trust yourself.
