AI in 5: Predictive Analytics: Can AI Really Predict Student Success? (May 25, 2026)
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
What if schools could identify struggling students before grades collapse, attendance drops, or intervention comes too late? That’s the promise—and controversy—behind predictive analytics in education.
In this episode of AI in 5, AI Learning Guide JR D. explores how artificial intelligence is quietly transforming schools through predictive analytics systems that analyze attendance trends, assignment completion, LMS engagement, behavior patterns, and academic performance to forecast student outcomes. These AI-driven tools are designed to help educators intervene earlier, personalize support, and improve student success before problems escalate.
But there’s a catch.
As predictive systems expand into K–12 schools and higher education, educators and parents are beginning to ask difficult questions:
- How much student data should AI have access to?
- Can algorithmic bias unfairly label students?
- Should schools trust predictive systems when making educational decisions?
- And where does human judgment fit into an increasingly data-driven classroom?
This episode breaks down the real-world applications of predictive analytics, the growing role of AI in educational decision-making, and why “human-in-the-loop” oversight may become one of the most important safeguards in modern education.
You’ll also hear why experts from organizations like UNESCO and voices such as Sal Khan continue emphasizing that AI should support educators—not replace them.
Whether you’re a teacher, administrator, parent, student, or simply curious about the future of AI in schools, this episode explores one of the most important—and least understood—technologies shaping education today.
Because the future of learning may not just be adaptive.
It may be predictive.

What's the neural network? What is DPT? All these AI terms confusing you and me. It's AI and making AI make sense.
SPEAKER_00What if your school already knew which students were likely to struggle next semester before the semester even started? Sounds a little like minority report, homeroom edition, right? But that's exactly where predictive analytics is heading in education. Today on AI in 5 on this May 25th, 2026, we're going to be talking about the AI systems quietly working behind the scenes in schools, systems trying to predict attendance problems, learning gaps, dropout risk, and even student burnout before humans even notice. And depending on who you ask, this is either the future of student success or the beginning of some very uncomfortable ethical questions. So grab your coffee, hide your GPA from the robots, and let's dive right in. So, what is predictive analytics? Well, predictive analytics is the use of AI, machine learning, and large data sets to forecast future outcomes in education. That means systems analyze things like grades, attendance, assignment completion, LMS activity, test scores, behavior records, and sometimes even engagement patterns. Then the AI looks for these patterns. Like, for example, students missing assignments and logging in less frequently, students whose grades suddenly dip after a holiday break, students absent two Mondays in a row, the system flags these as at risk, not because a human teacher reported it, but because the algorithm noticed statistical similarities to previous students. In other words, AI is becoming the educational version of weather forecasting. Except instead of predicting rain, it's predicting who may need intervention. So why does this matter? Well, here's the thing. Schools have always been reactive. A student fails, then adults respond. A student disappears from class, then counselors intervene. Predictive analytics flips that timeline. Now schools are asking, what if we could step in before the failure happens? And honestly, that's powerful. According to UNESCO and Education Researchers Worldwide, early intervention remains one of the strongest indicators of long-term student success. AI systems are now helping school districts identify dropout risk, recommend tutoring support, personalize learning paths, and allocate resources more effectively. Some universities already use predictive systems to identify students who may need academic advising weeks before midterms. K through 12 districts are slowly but coming along. The big question is this helpful or is this creepy? Now, here's where the conversation gets spicy. Because predictive analytics sounds amazing until you realize AI is making assumptions about children. And that introduces some very real concerns. First, algorithmic bias. If historical school data contains inequities, and let's be honest it often does, AI systems can accidentally reinforce those patterns. Second issue, privacy. How much student data should AI analyze? Attendance, behavior, social-emotional patterns, device usage, that's where parents and educators are starting to raise some eyebrows. And third, labels. Because once a student gets flagged as at risk, there's always the danger that humans begin treating the prediction like destiny instead of probability, and that's a huge difference. So what are the experts saying? Well, Sal Khan of Khan Academy has repeatedly emphasized that AI should act as a support tool for human educators, not a replacement for teacher judgment. And honestly, that may be the key takeaway here. Meanwhile, researchers from Stanford and EduCause continue warning schools that transparency and oversight are critical when deploying predictive systems. Translation: The AI can raise its hand, but humans still need to make the decisions. So why does this matter to you? Well, if you're a teacher, predictive analytics could eventually help identify struggling students earlier than ever before. If you're a parent, you'll want to understand what data your child's school is collecting and why. And if you're a student, AI may soon shape recommendations about tutoring, interventions, scheduling, and academic pathways. And if you are a school leader, this conversation is no longer theoretical. It's already happening. Quietly, right now. So here's today's challenge. Ask this question. If AI predicts a student might struggle, what should happen next? Because the answer shouldn't just be trust the algorithm. It should be use the prediction to support the human. That distinction may define the future of education. And that's been today's AI in 5. If you've enjoyed this episode, and why haven't you, share it with a fellow educator, administrator, or parent who still thinks AI in school just means chat GPT writing essays. Spoiler alert, the robots have moved into the attendance office.
