I think you may have glossed over too quickly the issue of color blind casting. Would casting a white actor in a leading role in an epic movie about Siddharta, Shaka Zulu, Montezuma or some other Global South south mythical or historical character have received the same praise, acceptance by Hollywood, movie critics and be considered for an oscar?
Or does color blind casting work in one direction only?
